Have questions about the game experience?

Fairly regularly, I get questions about the Staples Center game-entertainment experience that I simply can’t answer, because I don’t know the answer. Well, a couple weeks ago I was glad to meet Danny Zollars, who is the Kings’ new director of game entertainment, and Danny has agreed to do a blog-led Q&A, in which fans/readers can ask him questions and he can get a feel for the passionate fan base that he will now be serving. Please feel free to post your questions here, and I might stress the word “questions.” Certainly, feedback and suggestions are welcome, but if your comments are in the form of a question, it will be easier for me to present them to Danny when I speak with him.

I asked for a rundown of all the things Danny is responsible for, to help better define the questions, so here you go. Hopefully it will give you a good idea of what Danny can speak to…

1. Direct and lead venue staff (graphic design, audio/visual, lighting, operations, PA announcers) in collaborating to produce all elements of Kings in-game experience.

2. Select and manage all music to optimize fan experience at the game.

3. Lead efforts in producing and managing all Kings Events – Fan Fests, Watch Parties, Theme Nights, In-game Concerts, Charity Events, Season Ticket Member Events and others.

4. Oversee all graphic elements during the game.

5. Manage distribution of all promotional items for fans at games.

Will there be a way to have a watch party at Staples Center during the playoffs like Philly did in 2010 in Rd. 2 so fans can be together during those games?

what is allthe preparation behind the scenes that goes into a gameday that we fans dont see?

    Thanks Rich and Danny!

This is off topic but is the retro jersey gone for good for now? Cause of the dropping of the purple? Its a shame that it was stated “the fans wanted the current colors more” and that is why the purple was removed?

@pr0cess, The retro jersey will be worn in 3 games this season on “Legends Nights.”

@pr0cess, Interesting note on the Purple Retro jersey, icethetics.info had an offseason poll that ask readers to rate all 90 Jerseys worn by NHL teams last year. The Purple Retro jersey finished 9th overall, proof that that look has far ranging appeal. I personally would love to see it or a similar design replace the former home jersey next year. The Black Home Plate design finished 29th and the former home and road placed 62nd and 64th respectively.

What I would like to see at each and every game is that organ/chant (not the adams family one) that allows for the fans to scream “___opposition team name here_____” suck! and each time it repeats itself is’t a little more drawn out and you cant chant the opposing teams name with SUCK repeatedly for about 4 times and then the chant continues even after play has started and the organ has stopped. That chant always seems to get me fired up! :)

Thanks Danny for taking the time, this is great!

Question for you: Do the Kings look at the introductions in other arenas and try to see what works and what doesn’t in order to incorporate that for our team? In particular I went to a game in Montreal and the opening before the team comes out primarily consists of a simple montage of fan photos of people wearing Montreal jerseys around the world (i.e at the Great Wall of China, little babies, military men in the middle east, etc). It’s a pretty touching way of incorporating the fans’ passion with the team. I always thought it would be a cool way of starting to really push the idea across that the Kings have one of the most loyal core fanbases that no one knows about east of California. Having people send in photos of themselves wearing Kings gear and/or jerseys would be pretty cool…and it would encourage more people to bring their Kings jerseys on their next vacation

    Thanks again Danny!

I guess I’m showing my age here with this question. I really enjoy watching games at Staples (I think you guys all do a great job), but it seems that all professional sports (football, baseball, soccer, and hockey) are now filling every void between whistles with games, songs, or some form of entertainment. Why has there been a push to do this? And is there any chance that we may go back to the good old days of having some “down time” between plays? Thanks for your time.

    @efam,
that’s a great question, the between play noise actually takes away from the atmosphere sometimes… it certainly was the case in Berlin where the music drowned out the European fans who were singing and chanting on their own (perish the thought!)

    Brig33 Reply:

@efam, I agree I feel like it’s so gimmicky. Do we really need constant forced entertainment? I mean ice girls, t-shirt cannons, mascosts, cheerleaders the NHL is slowly becoming the NFL. Obviously I’m speaking for not just the Kings in my rant right now lol but I miss the old days when HOCKEY is what was most important. No Gimmicks, Just Hockey… Sounds like a good slogan to me

    [Reply]

    Naturallawyer Reply:

@Brig33, completely agree. I think the ducks started it. I remember going down there in the mid-90s and between periods they had some lunatic with poles attached to his hands and feet and dummies attached to the poles, all dressed as the village people, while he danced with the song “YMCA.” That kind of crap does not belong at a hockey game.

Hi Danny and thanks Rich for doing this.

How are the promotional items (player number balls, t-shirts, jerseys off the players backs, concert/show tickets and etc…) awarded? I know its not random. I’ve seen the same guy who sits behind me by 2 rows win numerous times during the season and over the season’s and can’t for the life of me figure out who this guy knows to get the special treatment. It’s also very disturbing to see the same person 2 years in a row win a jersey off the players back at the end of the season. My question to you is, what can you do to ensure that more than just the heavy hitters get the rewards that all season ticket members should be available to receive. And by the way, love the new sound system and the fact your playing it loud for a change – rock more Metallica!!! Go Kings!

Will the Kings continue to give out the free 8×10 “line up” cards that feature a Kings player on the front with the home and visiting team rosters on the back? I always made sure to get one at every game I attended (have them on my wall), but the last couple times I went they didn’t have them. If they’ve been discontinued…I’d love to see them come back. Thanks for all you do! Go Kings Go!!!

    [Reply]

    Howe 9 Reply:

@Max8, They say they discountinued them because they are going green & that you can get the game day info on line. That’s a bunch of crap though as they are trying to save money – just like having the Media Guide on line now. What they don’t realize is that people really liked those pictures & people hang them on their walls or get them autographed or try to get a complete set. If money is an issue they could probably make less of them & sell them for a dollar. I would buy one every game if it was a player I needed. This was a big mistake in not making these anymore. It made a lot of fans unhappy.

When selecting the music, is a copyright license required for each individual intellectual property in order to be played during games?

Second question: Are ideas taken from other sporting venues? For example, the Calgary Flames sponsored a charity event that the fans participated in. When the flames scored, the fans threw thousands of teddy bears onto the ice. the ordeal lasted for 30 minutes, if i remember correctly. Has anything like that been taken into consideration?

Also, have any players or staff requested a certain song. If so, who/what?

Okay, last one. I promise: Other than profane, suggestive and offensive type of music that is edited or simply disregarded, is there any genre that is not aloud or disliked and will not be played?

Once again Rich, you amaze me with the amount of depth you provide us. People should be fans of this team not only for the team its self, but for Rich as well!

    2. Yes. Drive to another NHL city. Same stuff happens. Whether you are at the game or watching on local tv.
    3. No. Only the Calgary organization has ever had a Teddy Bear toss.

With all due respect something has to be done about the music at Staples. The National hockey league Represents the Toughest individuals in sports and I find it inexcusable the we have to pander to the music likes of britney spear or the Black eyed peas. Hockey was meant for only one form of music and that is good old heavy rock and roll. We are not the nba or the national football league. Let’s do whatever we can to pump our boys up before and during the game.

    Danny,

Thanks for taking my questions, it’s great what Rich does for us fans. Anyway here are my questions:

    1. During the pre-game music/video/light show, why are the laser lights green? Seems like purple would be a better choice? Especially when the Canucks are visiting.
    2. Is there a system to what sections are selected for give-aways during the games? Reason for asking is that I’ve had season tickets in selection 308 for five years and we almost never get anything? No tennis balls, t-shirts, coupons, food or anything? So either our section is just plain unlucky or someone doesn’t like someone in our section.
    3. Why does the large jumbo sized display on the first floor near the 12th and Figueroa entrance never show the game action? It seems to know just be a large rotating billboard for advertisements.
    4. During game stoppages, how come replays of penalties or video reviewed goals never shown on the JumboTron? As fans it would be nice to know what is being reviewed as it feels like we are left in the dark?

    Thanks for taking my questions.

    Go Kings!!!

    KingTrojan Reply:

@BobsYourUncle, That’s the color lasers are. It’s on a light spectrum, which in turn is classified by colors.

    [Reply]

    BobsYourUncle Reply:

@KingTrojan, Actually diode lasers are what is commonly used. For example, many laser lights are red wavelength which use a red wavelength in the mid to upper 600 nm range of electromagnetic radiation; however, diode lasers can be used for colors ranging from near-ultraviolet to near-infrared, covering virtually all of the visible light spectrum. So depending of the technology used, in theory they (meaning Staples Center) could have different color laser lights.

During the playoffs (if I remember correctly it’s not done this way during the regular season) the players come out on the ice through the castle with the red light and the smoke machine in their face and the “Back in Black” blaring. I think this is really cool for the beginning of the game, but very distracting to do at the beginning of the 2nd and 3rd periods. I always visualize the guys between periods focusing on adjustments that coaches are giving them. I think the entire hoop-lah of theatrics before the 2nd and 3rd periods is unnecessary during a time when focus is the number one priority. Maybe I’m just looking for an excuse as to why our home playoff record hasn’t been so great the last two years (understatement), but I thought since this thought crossed my mind I would pass it along… Thanks

    1. Can we get more Jay?
    2. Can we get more vintage footage and music?
    3. Can you arrange themes (like October (let’s get this show going), November (no turkeys in LA), December specials in LA Live store for gift giving, January (etc.), February (something about missing Staples), March (countdown to end of the season), April (playoffs here we come)?

    Hey Rich!

May you ask Mr. Danny Zollars how the process works to make entertainment decisions? Maybe getting an inside view of how these decisions are made and the process would be very cool and insightful for fans like me. Seems like we have a few questions about the King’s intro already.

For instance, I would love to have more of a slow epic entrance for the Kings.

This is my fantasized version of my subjective definition of epic. The arena goes dark, Ennio Morricone’s Ecstasy of gold play for 2 minutes, fade into strong thudding heart beats, introduce the sound of hundreds of horse hooves riding on dirt before the Castle gates open, enter the Kings to finish the soundtrack, which changes into some classic rock rift such as AC/DC’s Back in Black. (Metallica concert inspired)

So how would something like this be discussed, or would Danny be the only person to green or red light this? Maybe I”m indirectly asking to change the intro, but more importantly, I think it’d be cool to hear how the process works for the game presentations that are currently active.

Can you get more scenes of that guy who puts on the opposing team uniform and then acts like a goof in the penalty box after a penalty is called (like playing with toy cars, or a barbie, or reading comic books). It cracks me up every time.

Second, since we are in Hollywood, can we get more movie scene parodies or music video parodies with a Kings theme. South Park or Jaws or Godzilla are good examples that I have seen already at Staples.

It’s great when, after the Kings score a goal, the organist plays the two notes to encourage King fans to chant the opposing team’s goalie’s name (i.e., Turrrrcooooo, Osssgoooood, Luuuooongooo). It really gets the crowd involved and adds to the game experience. I’ve noticed that the organist is inconstant and doesn’t always do this, even if the fans are chanting the goalie’s name anyways. Is there a reason for this inconsistency, aside from goalies with names that are difficult to chant?

    Danny,

1.) Although rally-towels traditionally surface in the playoffs, has any thought been given to distributing them more frequently throughout the season? Maybe for high profile games? Especially on games vs. Anaheim! This gives the fans an outlet to participate and celebrate in a very visual way while in the stands. Don’t know how much of an increased cost this would be, but is it feasible?

2.) Are the special pizza night/hot dog night promos a thing of the past? There used to be value packs similar to 2 seats, 2 hot dogs, 2 drinks for $XX.XX or others involving pizza and beer. Any chance these value deals will return?

3.) The first song (and it might have changed already) played after winning games while the players give their hockey sticks away to lucky fans is very flat. Yes, this is my personal opinion, but it doesn’t come across as celebratory at all, rather very slow, sleepy, and boring.

4.) Lastly, the drummer group is awesome! People of all ages enjoy their entertainment. Please keep this going.

I was going to post this before the home opener, but now seems as timely as ever. Sorry Rich, this is not a question but more of a rant. I am excited that the season has started, but the one thing I am not excited about is the Kings embarrassing game presentation. I often wonder what visiting fans from out of town think when they attend a Kings game.
It’s bad enough that our team has to enter the ice through a cookie cutter castle that looks like it was designed more for Sleeping Beauty then a hockey team. But then they throw game host Jay at us, you know, the “guy” who presents all the dance offs, intermission games, etc. Couldn’t the Kings have found a more effeminate person? Where did they find him? Was he some homeless person walking the streets of West Hollywood? Now I’m not saying they should fire him, maybe just reassign him to the Sparks games. I’m thinking the Kings should hire someone more like Rob Zombie, he’s a Kings fan, I’ve seen him at the games. Okay, he might be a bit too scary for the young ones, but you know what I mean, someone with a bit more testosterone in his system.
Which leads me to Bailey. Now I’ve never been a big fan of mascots, I consider them a rung below circus clowns, but if we have to have one, I guess Bailey will have to do. At least if he talked, he would roar and not quack. I just wish he would stop banging on the glass like all those other idiot fans who do the same when their sitting in the front row.
Which brings me to the one thing they got right, the Ice Girls. Love em!!! I don’t care that half of them are one step from falling on their asses. I’m glad my wife doesn’t go to the games with me because I actually look forward to the T.V. timeouts so I can ogle them.
But then there’s the male crew, a bunch of 90 lb. weakling, sideways baseball wearing Justin Bieber wannabe’s. How about giving the female hockey fans some eye candy too. The Kings should go to some of the local collages, hire a bunch of student athletes, put them in tank tops and tight shorts and watch them whip tee shirts all over Staples without the use of an air gun.
But then maybe worse of all is the music. It reminds of the scene in Slapshot where Paul Newman enters the arena and hearing the music runs up to the organist, tears up his sheet music and tells him to never ever play Lady of Spain again. I wish Dustin Brown would run up to Dieter Ruehle’s office, smash his sound equipment with a hockey stick and tell him to never ever play the Black Eyed Peas again. This is hockey, not American Idol, now I’m not saying they should play death metal, just some good old kick ass rock ‘n roll would do the trick.
But there are two even more embarrassing things in the N.H.L. First is that stupid arm chomping thing they do up in San Jose when the Sharks go on the power play. I’ve been to a few games up there and just want to go into hiding every time they do that. Are they in preschool? You would have thought they would have outgrown that 20 games into their inaugural season.
But the undisputed most embarrassing thing in the entire N.H.L. – being a Ducks fan!
Enjoy the season fellow Kings fans.

I really enjoy Air Bailey at the intermission. One of the best moments I have ever witnessed during my short tenure of attending Kings games was the night that they honored the retiring head of security at the Phoenix game. They brought out all of the retired jersy players (Gretz, Luc, Rogie, Taylor and Dionne) and had them in their jerseys on the ice. It was stupendous and was an instant history lesson for newer Kings fans. I believe that was the first time all 5 were on the ice together in thoeir jerseys. Bringing those players back for different interactive events (autographs or pictures, etc.) would be tremendous. Also, keep Hockey Fest at the Training Center and make more players available for autographs and pictures. I love being a Kings fan and we are well taken care of. I would be the first to tell you this song or this band do not fall anywhere near my normal musical taste, but it was freakin’ awesome. I started using it as warm-up music for my son’s hockey games. Anyway, here is my question, why was that a onetime use? Did the band pull the rights? I would love to hear it reprised this year, I know it fired up Section 333.

As far as the game experience, I would love to have additional choices for food, but it seems to be impossible to get through any lines with more than 4 people in in in the span of an intermission. A slight suggestion would be to provide the concessions folks with a monitor and a clock and a siren to tell them that you have to stock ice and cups BEFORE the period ends and there are no designated breaks during the period intermission. Oh yeah. I almost forgot, try smiling and being pleasant to the people who buy from your stands.

Ok I did a mini rant earlier, but I’ll ask some questions to go along with this extended rant lol

So first, what is the point to the ice crew?
are they cheerleaders? or are they just there to look cute? I don’t get it. my REAL problem with them is do they really clean up the ice well? remember when we had like three guys who came out and cleaned the snow from the corners? they did the job just fine, and when the Kings turn over the puck in the corner with a minute left and loose the game because the ice wasn’t cleaned well is it really worth it? just so some creepy old guy can oogle some girl? Now if they actually do their job, then fine, but again is it really worth it when there was no problem the way it was done before?

Second, The castle thing they come out of…LOL enough said

Third, the forced entertainment is unbearable. I get it people pay a lot of money to go to the games to be entertained. You know what’s really entertaining? A good hockey team! I understand all the gimmicks when the Kings were bottom dwelling the western conference, they needed people’s butts in the seats. But now the Kings are good, people will come just because of that! I mean look at the Lakers, people don’t go to the games to see some dude try and make a half court shot to win a car, they come because the Lakers are champions.

ok last one I promise, Why don’t the Kings honor their past more? I never understood the constant modern trendy focus. look the Kings have been around a long time, and why not educate our fans on what it really means to be a King? It seems like the Kings are always looking to be new and hip (new jerseys, etc). Why not some intros and videos that show and honor our HISTORY? The Kings have had amazing players play for them and amazing moments (Miracle on Manchester anyone? picture a video intro of that!) Just saying all the teams that get the media attention (chicago, pittsburgh, boston, etc.) honor their past while embracing their future as well.

and if you think i’m just some old dude who doesn’t like change lol, I’m actually 22 and have been coming to Kings games since Staples Center opened. So I know i’m in the age group of people they’re probably trying to get to go to games. I’ve even converted a few friends to hockey fans by bringing them to games, and you know what they said was their favorite part of seeing a hockey game live? The action ON THE ICE! yep they loved hockey for hockey, in fact they thought the game could have done without all the extra stuff too. just my two cents

Since we now have the “LA” logo, and as we also have our own song of the same title, it might be interesting for the Kings to do a once per game JumboTron 30 second profile of an average, or not so average, Kings fan. A mini “Day in the Life” about the people who actually support the team. In a city as diverse as Los Angeles, I’m sure there are plenty of Kings fans whose passion for the game, and team, spills over into their day-to-day lives.

I know if its a sponsor you have to roll with it. It just seems as though there’s too much “effort” in pushing the fans to get excited. Richards and Kopitar will get these people going enough.

Also, I’m sure this isn’t something you can fix but I’m thowing it out there. The acoustics are awful. I can barely decipher what David Courtney is saying, very hard to understand due to the acoustics. maybe its just me.

There is so much effort in trying to get the fans pumped up. How about, the team plays amazing hockey and shows they can go past the first round. I suggest that that in and of itself would get the fans pumped up.

And also, with all the histrionics, the gate opening, the laser light stuff…. nothing helped the Kings to have differing sorts of melt downs in two consecutive first round playoff matchups – both of which they were positioned to win.

It is frustrating to get chants going or to razz the opposing goaltender because every whistle some dumb song comes on and kills the crowd.

I haven’t read the near 200 comments above mine but these things stick out to me…prompting the crowd for noise can be irritating. Having to listen to “LOUDER” and I CAN’T HEAR YOU” every home game is irritating.

Can we tone it down a little bit?

The crowd at Staples will be loud without having to prompt with them with gimmicks. Let the crowd do the in-game experience for you.

    Everything to Everyone -
Is it a policy that the Kings have to “try” to cater to everyone? The random mix of entertainment seems to make it a non-cohesive experience that is straight-up distracting..

Generally, it’s just confusing when Iron Maiden and ‘Top 20’ are played in the same room. There are other genres that blend well with quality rock… but some things are just too contrasting, which becomes a distraction and cancels any excitement that was just built from playing “The Trooper.”

Along the same lines – Doing some things for the kids is not generally going to kill the buzz of the core fan (np, we’ll keep that Lemonhead game) – but it just becomes bad comedy when one tries to do something for everyone (Dark Disney Castle/Pop Organ Music/Ryan Seacrest Host).

Can we get a change in the old “everything to everyone” policy?

Before every game the Jumbotron displays a message telling the fans not to use offensive language etc., reminding them that it is a family event. Someone forgot to tell the King’s organization and someone surely forgot to tell the cameramen. There is one cameraman in particular who goes out of his way to capture every buttocks and breast he can while the Ice Girls are on the ice. I have seen this over and over again—the camera close up to a girl’s behind as it is going up and down to shovel the ice into the bucket. I have actually watched him focus his camera so that he could get a good, close-up shot of either an Ice Girl’s behind or breasts as they are skating . He really likes the one girl who is about to fall out of her top. He gets nice and close for that shot. The camera men are not just focused on the Ice Girls, ANY woman walking down or up an aisle is fair game as well.
So many times I can’t count, as soon as the Jumbotron shows the woman’s anatomy the men have comments to share with one another—-”Great ass.” “Ooh Baby, come over and give me some of that”—”I’d like to get a piece of that.” “Got milk?” I once even heard a little boy about 10 years old join in with them. I have seen girls sink in their seats as they watch and listen to what men have to say about women. How sick is that. The way the Ice Girls are dressed, the way they conduct themselves, the bathing suit calendar shoots shown on the screen repeatedly, and the cameramen’s repeated focus on the women’s anatomy all contribute to this type of environment. Staples promotes this type of behavior, the King’s organization promotes this type of behavior. Hey, those in charge–would you want your daughters or sisters, to ever be subjected to such comments? I don’t think so. Judging by your decisions maybe you don’t care. But, you are responsible.

It is so very obvious that the purpose of the Ice Girls is to stimulate and entertain the men who attend the games. If it was about getting the fans interested into the game the the Ice Girls would not be dressed like they are waiting tables at a men’s club. Ask yourselves, why are the male Crew not dressed provocatively? Answer: the Ice Girls are there as eye candy for the men. You see, we still cannot get past the caveman belief that sports are for men and women are just there to make the male experience better. Take a look around the arena next time you are there. ALL of those fans deserve the same great hockey experience.

    B) Pick a fan (season ticket holder extra?) in the crowd that announces the starting 5.

    2.
Offer headphone sets for children. Some little kids get scared by the sounds in arena etc. That would help the family experiance.

    3.
Since LA is the “meka” of hollywood I guess Cartman doing the GO KINGS GO CHANTS ain’t a bad idea.

    4.
I know Alyssa Milano and Jesse James have already done some Kings clotches. Maybe there could be again done somethin’ with them or annyone else? The basic Kings store is rather boring and there is a possibility to sell the “LA Kings” trademark to fans better (just donn’t overprice it please). Just a thought.

Thanks for all you do Rich =)
