The Kings? They’ve been everywhere, man. From El Segundo to downtown L.A. to Phoenix to Kansas City to Denver to Anaheim to Las Vegas to Hamburg… If a city can make ice, the Kings have probably either been there or flown over it in the last three weeks. Now, it’s real. As I noted this morning, today seemed to be a turning point for several people in the traveling party, in terms of overcoming jet lag, and spirits seemed high at Kings practice today, as the players knew that they would finally be able to play some meaningful games. Always-entertaining Justin Williams gave his thoughts on the start of the season and how he’s feeling as he tries to adjust to Europe.
WILLIAMS: “The time is upon us. Enough make-believe. It’s time for the real thing. [laughs] We’re excited. Our summers have been too long and there’s been too much working out and too much waiting for the season to start. I’m really excited to get going.
“I think yesterday was a good day for me. I got to bed at midnight, got some good rest, got up at a decent hour today and I feel like I’m kind of on schedule now. I think they say it’s an hour per day per time zone, or something like that. We’re ready to rock.’’

@Ian, He was sent down to the AHL for 1 game due to salary cap reasons. Philly saves 1.25 million in salary cap space if Schenn misses 1 game.

So I need some help: I’m having major construction being done to my house and I don’t have cable hooked back up yet. Pretty much just Internet and netflix on my ps3. So I need to go somewhere to watch the game tomorrow morning. But I can’t think of anywhere that will be open and showing games at 10am. I don’t even think espn zone will be open that early. I’m in south OC. Help!

@Cortex949, Get on the Interstate 15 head for Salt Lake City. I’ll be watching the game on my 40in Vizio. Only some 700 miles from the OC. If you leave now you’ll make in no time. Don’t worry I have beer.

Bit off topic – but I’m a Kings/Monarchs fan in NH and have a question about tomorrows Kings game. I thought I read that Bob/Jim were broadcasting from LA, but I don’t seem to find that it’s listed on TV (we have DirecTV/Center Ice). If all else fails, there’s always the Kings radio feed!
Thanks for any info. anyone can provide me with.

@Simarosa, JayGoLAKings is right, tomorrow’s game is on Versus. Saturdays game is on FSN, for us in SoCal that is, with Bob and Jim broadcasting from an L.A. studio.

Its on VERSUS so it won’t be Bob and Jim, also meaning it won’t be on Center Ice. whenever a game is played on versus they have the broadcasting rights for that game.Hope it helps

A more offensive system plus time in the top six was bound to be different than making him a shutdown guy.
Plus, a trade probably shakes off some complacency.

Off Topic: Ex- King Rick Martin had brain damage. It’s the same brain damage Bob Probert had, only Probert was an enforcer and Martin wasn’t a fighter. Makes me glad to see Shanahan cracking down on head shots. Now if only there was a way to get rid of the enforcers in the game today. Fighting needs to be in Hockey, but we don’t need 250lb. guys breating the snot out of each other for no reason what so ever.

@CB14, maybe they should establish a rule that players with more penalty minutes than ice time each week will be suspended?

CB14 Reply:

@Helvetica, Something like that might work. What about limiting the amount of fights a player is allowed each year to 5? That way players can still protect their teammates and fight if necessary, but not just fight for the heck of it.

@CB14,
Thing about the Martin story is that his trauma came without fisticuffs, so CTE occurred either, 1) from chronic repeated micro-trauma (center ice hits + hits along the boards without known concussion), or 2) from the one huge traumatic event related to his head hitting the ice resulting in seizure activity and definitive concussion. Either one has huge ramifications for all contact sports (esp. football, hockey & baseball/catchers & umpires).
If Martin’s CTE is from one huge event, every precaution against concussions being made today is likely insufficient. Unless there is significant improvement in helmet technology, significant hitting restrictions may be in the pipeline.
As a member of the Medical community, I’m watching the CTE developments closely…

@BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy, Yeah, this CTE is a scary thing. I forget his name, but there was a football player who played with the Chicago Bears who took his own life because of the affects of CTE. The thing that makes things really scary is that he knew he had it, even though it’s not able to be diagnosed until after death, and he shot himself in the Heart so that his brain would be preserved for research for CTE.

@CB14, Hate to say it, but the theory behind the enforcers is that they keep the violence down. it’s quite possible you end up with more violence (and injuries) if you do something to keep the enforcers off the ice.
