Here’s what Terry Murray said today, after practice, about the status of Dustin Penner, who has a “lower-body injury.” Penner came out for the start of practice today but left early and will not play tomorrow against the Rangers.
MURRAY: “Dustin Penner is still feeling, not feeling great. He’s probably about 80 percent. He was out there (on the ice) for 40 minutes today, which is an improvement from the practice that we had in Hamburg. It was probably 30, 35 minutes there. So it’s improving. It’s going to take some time. He’s not going to be ready for tomorrow. We’ll just continue the rehab and get him some ice time and continue to push it until he feels comfortable and back off now and give him the opportunity to get better.”
Good to know Pens is feeling. Thanks for the insight TM.

Sounds like the pre season groin injury to me
[Reply]
He’s got an ingrown toenail!! makes it seriously tough to skate and very hard to operate on. It will be touch and go the next few weeks to see if it gets better and then they will have it re-evaluated. After a month we will trade him to Edmonton saying he is good to go only for there Doctors to find out he has a broken foot as they clear him to play.

Is this guy the biggest joke or what? Couldn’t handle the conditioning the Kings had in store for him and now injured because of it probably… Wish we never got this guy, he should be great but he’s just a schmuck

So how many games will us bloggers give the Kings before we/some start freaking out? In my humble opinion it may take this team a couple of weeks to settle in. What with the long and unusual beginning “road trip” and new players finding their way around the “system” and their teammates. With that said, I am not too concerned about the first 5-7 games. Sure I’d love to see them storm out of the gate and win ‘em all, but I am taking a cautious approach to this season. Its great that we are all excited about this team, as we should be, but there will be some growing pains I think. I’ve been a little amused by some here throughout the preseason, and by the comments this morning by some, it looks like the “haters” and “naysayers” and “doom and gloomers” are already in mid-season form! I’m looking forward to the journey this season, its not a sprint but a marathon.

@Shotongoal, I completely agree. Don’t think we will start off as strong this year. But we will heat up towards the end. Which is what I’m hoping for. That way we will be hot in the playoffs and we can ride that for a while. I always thought that was our biggest issue, just limping into the playoffs with no momentum.

@Shotongoal, I think we have enough skill to play subpar and still scratch out games. I won’t freak out until our first 5-game losing streak. IMO that should never happen with this team, PERIOD. I would like to be in first place in the PAC from wire to wire.
[Reply]
Shotongoal Reply:
October 6th, 2011 at 12:10 pm
@Stuart, I agree that this team should not have those lapses, especially with their goaltending. With that said though, it seems that in the system they play if they are not totally in sync weird things can/have happened. Not knocking the system, but it does seem that it demands a certain degree of focus and if that isn’t present all the time in the players then the system fails and the team loses and looks lost doing it. As far as going wire-wire, I’m not sure what the importance of that is….
[Reply]
Stuart Reply:
October 6th, 2011 at 12:15 pm
@Shotongoal, Not that it’s important at all, it would just be a nice feather in the cap… a nice footnote in the SI video of the 2011-12 Championship DVD of the LA Kings that I will have to purchase next summer…

@Shotongoal, If theKings can stay at least above .500 the first 20-25 games, they should be OK. They will have to really turn it on after that though, but we have the roster to do it. Its still going to be tough getting into the playoffs in the West though. DET, VAN, CHI, NSH, SUX, SJ should all make the playoffs. I see PHX as taking a step back losing Jovo and Bryz, but dont count out Tippets ability to make something out of nothing. so that leaves 2 potential spots for the Kings.
I see STL being better and likely making the playoffs. CAL is old but made quite a push in the second half last year from last place. DAL lost richards and have finincial difficulties (but so did PHX for last 2 seasons). CLB is an enigma and could be better but could suck also (insightful right?), MIN moved laterally I think. EDM and COL are rebuilding.

Shotongoal Reply:

@tornado12, I really like the Kings this year, and if they gel and players perform as they have in the past (see Penner, D.), and they can stay away from the injury bug, then they have a good shot at competing with VAN, CHI, SJ for the top 3 or 4 spots in the conference. I think going into this season, right now, the Kings are a better team than DET, NSH, ANA, and STL. I think PHX and DAL have taken big steps backwards, CLB and CAL are the unknowns a bit in this conference, MIN may be better than last year with the scoring help they acquired, and EDM and COL are still very much in the rebuilding(?) stages.
With all that said, I think it will be difficult to go from a 1st round and out to a Cup final. It just doesn’t happen often in this league. My hope is that with the offseason moves the Kings made they got a lot better in the area of playoff experience and that will translate to playoff success. I can live with it taking a month or so (10-15 games) for them to come together. But I really think they have to be finding their winning ways after that period of time or this conference might leave them behind. I think everyone knows they can compete with ANY team in this league, they just need to progressively step-up their game as the season progresses, and be healthy, and peek at the right time, to have that playoff momentum to carry them deep in the playoffs.
I think they can do those things, and I also think anything less than reaching the conference finals would be a disappointment this season. Losing in the 1st round or maybe even in the 2nd round, considering the circumstances, would be a HUGE disappointment for this team.

@BrokeKingsFan, Here is part of a story on his favorite coach. I wonder if he is going to bash him for losing a young player.
MacLean was rumored to be unhappy with how things were going for him in Phoenix and coach Dave Tippett’s reliance on veteran players over younger guys is likely the source of that if true. MacLean should get enough of a shot to prove himself in Winnipeg as they could use all the scoring they can find.

Crown Royal Reply:

@jet,
It’s true I like Tippett way better than TM. As far as MacLean, I know some Coyotes fans who are up in arms over that player leaving.
It’s noticable that since Gretzky left (not as good as a coach as he was a player) some of the young guys have been pushed to the background. Boedeker, Tichonov (who DL wanted to draft ahead of Voynov but was gone) and maybe Turris. This isn’t a Coyotes site so no need to chase this too far.
Guys like Yandle really prospered under Gretzky. Some of the Coyotes prospects were not developing so they switched their AHL coach a while back. Yeah, I do like Tippett. Wish he was back here running the PP.
