Voynov to AHL; roster set

The Kings have assigned Slava Voynov to Manchester of the AHL and put Jake Muzzin on injured reserve. Colin Fraser will start the season as an injured non-roster player. That sets the opening-night roster at 24, including third goalie Jeff Zatkoff, who will go to the AHL after the first two games.

    @WAKingsFan, Anyone notice Brayden Schenn was sent to the AHL by Philly yesterday? They even traded away 2 top Centers to open space for him on the roster. I like Schenn’s potential, but this is just further proof that he wasn’t ready last year or this year. Great trade DL we are positioned better now than last year for success with more guys in their prime years of hockey then last year.

    [Reply]

    CB14 Reply:

    @luc20rules, He’ll be back up after the first game. They only did it so that the bonus on his cap hit for playing in all 82 games goes away. It saves Philly 1.25 million in salary cap space.

    [Reply]

    Luc20Rules Reply:

    @CB14, I suppose that makes sense if he misses the first game he won’t count against Philly’s cap bonus exemption space. Otherwise I don’t see why they wouldn’t just wait and see if he had to sit out for injury or just scratch him later in the season. He is young enough to send to the AHL with out exposing him to waivers. If that is true it seems like a very avoidable bonus, and/or one that may tick off Schenn that they clearly chose to avoid it.

    @kororr, He is staying with the team at least until they leave Europe. They can put Penner on IR and recall Voynov at any time if I’m correct. But either way, Voynov was taken advantage of last night and still has a few glaring hopes in his game. He needs to get stronger in his own zone and stop making cute plays when he has the puck and instead make the safe play and get the puck out of the zone. There is still a lot he needs to work on.

    I hope we resign him. He stepped up to the plate last year and played stellar defense while increasing his offensive numbers. Great character guy also.

    Prince Reply:

    @DesertKing,
    The question will be will the Kings be able to afford him. The Kings will have a Parse, Penner, Stoll, and Mitchell all UFAs next year. The Kings will have to replace the production of those players if they are not resigned. Do you think a rookie can fill those voids? Then you might be abe to afford Mitchell. Is there a better URA willing to pay for about the same able to fill those voids? How much does Mitchell want to be paid next year? Will be many questions for DL&CO tofigure out this year.

    [Reply]

    Stop the Puck Reply:

    @Prince,

    prolly only want to keep mitchell out of that group anyway. parse is easily replaceable, penner is too enigmatic so it wold be hard to know what his value will be, and lewis can be a 3rd line center in a year.

    PRMan Reply:

    @Prince, Not to mention you can put Loki centering a weak scoring line and Richards centering a shutdown line and chipping in some offense.

    Sebastian Reply:

    @Donald_S, i hope to god that they resign Mitchell, his veteran presence and stay at home defensive style cannot be replaced by anyone from the AHL.

    [Reply]

    ValleyKingsFan Reply:

    @Sebastian, I completely agree. I think Mitchell is as fit as anybody to wear the C. I love the guy. I think it’s highly unlikely that he gets resigned though. Our stay at home defensemen contracts are set up in a way right now where we lose one for each of the next three years. Mitchell leaves after this one, then Scuderi, then Greene. The crappy part about this deal is that that is from best to worst so the easing in process becomes harder. The thing about the way Terry Murray runs his system is that he tends to put one offensive d-man out there with a stay at home d-man, and Mitchell’s leaving shouldn’t open up a roster spot for somebody like Voynov. Muzzin or Forbort should get that spot but, with the way Voynov has been playing, one of our defensive lines may end up with 2 offensive d-men on it.

    Nope. Put them on campus at the Viejas Arena – an arena that is only two years older than the Staples Center. Seating Capacity of 12,414 – perfect size for AHL hockey. Very easy access to the MTS Trolley. San Diego is 8th largest city in the United States whereas Kansas City is the 37th largest (just behind Long Beach!). And a RABID fan base that has already supported the Gulls in San Diego from 1966 through 2006.

    You can’t just send down, and call up Parse freely as u want…
    He would have to pass through waivers TWICE if u did that… Once going back to the AHL.. and once again coming back to the NHL <– called re-entry waivers.

    Teams would have the opportunity to claim parse @ 1/2 price. If that happened.. the kings would have to pay 1/2 of his cap hit, even though parse isn't on the team anymore. That is the only reason why parse is still here. Drewiski too.

    Either way we will have 2 guys in the pressbox on a nightly basis… If parse wants to be be "that guy" then good for him. Would you rather a rookie (voynov lokti) sit up there instead, getting fat and eating popcorn??? Or should they be in the AHL getting play time on their 1st line???

    Stop complaining about this….Martinez had a solid season last year and his experience will allow him to further his development. Drewiske is basically our back-up qb….never gonna get any playing time. Voynov goes to Manchester and gets top ice time to continue his development, and he definitely gets the call-up if anybody gets hurt. Yes, Parse looks terrible, but unless your going to start playing Voynov at wing, there is no reason to complain that the Kings organization made the decision to keep Parse and send down Voynov.
