A walk around Stockholm

A handful of us took a walk around parts of Stockholm today, most notably the island of Djurgarden, which features a few museums, historical buildings and homes, and a lot of greenery in between. I’m planning on going out tomorrow and checking out a different area, but here’s what I saw along the way today…

    DD’s in shape

    Crown Royal Reply:

    @Dominick,

    Yes, some reality expressed there. Quick has earned the number one job in goal but I’m no longer convinced he’s better than Bernier who has been outstanding so far this season. Bernier may be equal to or better than Quick even now.

    I agree TM isn’t going anywhere now but I agree with Sebastian his system is boring to watch. I believe he (TM) is holding the players back from being better.

    DL has done an excellent job but it’s also interesting to note only five players he’s drafted are on the current roster. No top six forwards and only one top four D-man. Lewis and Clifford will start on the fourth line. Martinez is the sixth d-man and Bernier is the backup goaltender. Only Doughty is a featured player. I like what DL has done with the team but I think TM may drag him down if he stays with him too long.

    [Reply]

    Dominick Reply:

    @Crown Royal, Interesting takes and very good points.

    I think with regards to the Quick vs Bernier saga. It doesn’t matter who is #1, and thus there is no controversy. The path is set to allow Bernier over time, to take it, or wait. Injury is the only thing that can force that ahead of schedule, and Bernier could just as easily get hurt himself.

    Even if Bernier does grab the reins, DL will keep Quick to see if he takes it back. Thus neither goalie is going anywhere till DL gets a “It’s me or him” alternative. I don’t see either Quick, or Bernier saying that anytime soon.

    I do wonder about TM, but I think just having a 100 point season will do for DL (which worries me too). I think it’s a toss up if we pass the first round, and would have to depend on how clear it is that the Kings system isn’t working. So far DL doesn’t see it that way.

    I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt for a while with the new players, but I’m not as patient as DL is. I find his system boring too, but TM embraces that label anyways, because it is safe, and that is TM hockey.

    Crown Royal Reply:

    @Dominick,

    You’re right about neither Quick or Bernier going anywhere until DL’s hand is forced. It doesn’t matter to me who is in goal as long as they stop the puck.

    It’s easy to like a team with the strength at center and goal the Kings now have but the defense needs to play better (Mitchell, Scuds, Greene) won’t get any better. That means the three young guys need to keep improving. The talent is there but JJ and DD need to be dominating. The wingers have so many question marks. Penner, along with the fragility of JW and Gagne. Also how much is there really left in the tank with Hunter and Moreau. The questions about the defense and wingers plus TM’s lack of vision is cause for worry. I agree it’s only a toss up we make it through the first round.

    @Dominick, I think with as poor a performance as Parse has had so far this pre-season, outside of yesterdays game, Kitsyn would’ve been a likely candidate to have a 9 game tryout with the Kings given Penner’s injury. Holloway also would’ve had a chance to beat out Parse for the L.W. spot had he not bolted to Europe. Too bad Kitsyn had to go back to the KHL for 2 years. I also agree that he stands a good chance of making the Kings when his KHL contract is up.

    [Reply]

    5holer Reply:

    @LBlocal, Why would they do that? Have a glut of top end forward prospects now at all levels of development. Need some NHL experience type players more than a B grade forward prospect. If he cannot crack that weak PHX line-up, it ain’t gonna happen here!

    [Reply]

    CB14 Reply:

    @LBlocal, He’s put up some really solid numbers the last 3 years in the AHL, and was only given a short chance in the NHL, 13 games. Not a bad idea to pick up a 22 year old L.W. with scoring potential to fill the void in Mnachester left by Holloway. The only question I have is if he’s still waivers exempt? Lets say he plays great in Manchester then we call him up, does he still have to pass through re-entry waivers? If so, there’s no point in us claimimng him unless he’s gonna start the season with the Kings.

    CB14 Reply:

    @LBlocal, To be honest with you, I don’t think i’ve ever seen the guy play, so my opinion is based solely off of his stats. Statistically speaking he does look similar to SP. Right now I would rather have SP than BML. A year or two from now? Probably BML, but thats assuming he will continue to improve, which is kind of a question mark considering Phoenix of all teams put him on Waivers. It’s not like he couldn’t make Detroit’s roster, it’s Phoenix, if he’s better than SP he should’ve been able to make their roster.

    What is up with Penner? Is he hurt officially or is he just banged up abit? Day to day or what? Hate that coy crap about injuries! Man up and speak the truth coaches/management! It ain’t the play-offs yet! Who cares about knowing his specific injuries or anyone else’s? Only in hockey is this idiotic game played about injuries. And do not tell me that all other teams don’t know what the injury is on any player at any time. They know precisely what’s the problem/injury status on every team, especially with all their scouting going on all year round! Coy crap makes no sense at all!

    It’s 5:10 in the morning here in Salt Lake and the snow is falling in Park City. Must mean that hockey season is upon us. Tonight there are 3 great match ups with tomorrow starting our season. I just got finished watching the Kings preview on Fox sports west. All the pieces are there for us having a good season. I will not be satisfied with just making the playoffs. I will not be satisfied getting out of the first round, The only true satisfaction will come when this Kings team raises the Stanley Cup. I know there are some good teams out there, Washington, Chicago, Are probably my top picks other than the Kings. I believe in these guys. Every year I believe in these guys. And for some 30+ years I’ve been let down. There are going to be some tough days ahead for this club. They still have some more growing pains to contend with. Our PP has to be better. No more blame game. Rather it be the players who have to step up or the coaches, they both must get it together and score while having the man advantage. Drew has to step up and become a leader on defense. With Scuds and Mitchell we have two top notch guys. Johnson needs nor worry so much on what others are doing more than just do what is within his strengths. Drew will have a better year if he shoots more and controls the PP. Goal Keeper will be fun to watch, but I believe that Bernier is ready. If Quick starts off slow look for #45 to come in when that happens he may not look back. #45 will do more for the Kings this year. All he needs is a shot. I feel in the coaching department, we could use some more emotion from the bench. I’m not around the team daily so I’m just going to live it at that. One last thing before I close this morning… Years ago 1994-1996 I was living in Lompoc, CA. I met some pretty outrageous King fans. There were these two brothers from the Philly area who were 100% Kings fans, these two taught me a lot about the game and over the years I’ve thought of them often. If by chance you two dumbbells read this Insiders blog, please get in touch. It;s worth a shot being that Insider fans are world wide now a days. Well no work for me today due to rain and snow. Hockey season is here, may we all rejoice.
