Morning in Kansas City

Here’s the first morning view of the (pre)season, from Kansas City. For any new blog readers among us, this is exactly what it would appear to be, simply a view out the hotel window, just to sort of give you a feel for the city. Some (Chicago, Vancouver, etc.) are better than others (Detroit…Detroit). The Kings are having their morning skate at Sprint Center, and the team has announced that tonight’s game against Pittsburgh is a sellout.

    I bet the air has the slight chill of early autumn in it along with the great earthy smells of the mid-west (no,I am not referring to the stockyards). This is a great time of year to be back there.

    How much you guys want to bet that cliffy and engelland fight in the first half of the second period ?

    [Reply]

    Eric Reply:

    @Freakshow,

    I hope not. Engelland will put a massive beating on him. I want to see what Nolan can do in Westgarth’s absence instead…

    @Eric, they got together last season in cliffys favor. Tough kid…

    @Freakshow, CLifford has heart but when it comes to fights is a bunching bag for opponents, I wish he would just play and stop using his face as a fist decellerator.

    Bill M. Reply:

    @kevco, Huh? He won more fights than Westgarth last year.

    @Bill M., I can’t get that fight between westy and john scott out of my head. Remember when his head bounced off the glass? That was more ugly then me after the bottle of patron I had last week!

    @Bill M.,

    I’m not sure Kevco was paying attention much of last year.

    loskingpride Reply:

    @kevco, Last I checked, Cliffy won 8 fights lost 3 and had 2 draws last season according to hockeyfights, so I don’t see him being a punching bag for people.. maybe the other way around though.

    Michael J. Reply:

    @loskingpride,

    Just watch how he fights. He doesn’t place much of an emphasis on tying up his opponent’s, which makes him very succeptable to being hurt. The two fights that he lost at the end of the year are prime examples of the dangers of his fighting styles.

    I think the point is that this kid needs to play the game, rather than sit in the box – win, lose or draw.

    Choralone Reply:

    @loskingpride, I agree with Michael J. He’s not an unknown quantity that surprises opponents anymore. People gameplan for him now, and I think they already have him figured out (hint – no defense) – his losses occured at the end of the season (and the playoffs) iirc. Sure it’s one thing to gameplan for him, and another thing to actually face him, but he’s not invincible and is much more valuable to this team in other ways. Let Westgarth and others eat fists.

    Dan H. Reply:

    @kevco,

    I have to say watching Westgarth wrestle and punch people in the ribs isn’t very entertaining. Except when he embarasses himself after losing a fight by getting up and applauding.

    My GF drove from DC to SoCal last year and said that Kansas City was absolutely beautiful, actually her favorite city they stayed at. Hopefully next year we can plan a trip out there and attend the game.

    @gene, Westgarth and Muzzin did not go, according to Rich….so that makes 30 players on this trip if we have all three goalies along…

    That’s a PREtty nice view compared to PREvious ones (Detroit). Any chance of a PREview PREdicating the PREdiction or possibility of an online stream of this PREdestined matchup? I PREsume the answer will be no, but the PREsence of this feed, if it existed, would bring PREmature joy to many here.

    In other words: We want an online feed. It’s a non-NHL market. If Pittsburgh is OK with it, we should get the rights to show it, even if the Penguins allow our market to see their feed (If they have one, don;t know if they do right now.)

    Here’s an example of how it could happen: http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=589916

    Notice their 3rd preseason game is against Detroit in Detroit (According to this article), yet PCNC (Pittsburgh Cable News Channel) is televisiing it from Detroit. Obviously someone obtained the rights to do this in another’s hockey market, so I know it’s possible.

    It could be a matter of no equipment to televise in the Sprint Center, but being an AEG property and them looking for a full-time tenant, I would find this hard to believe. I’m doing a lot of guessing, but I have to believe even an online feed of tonight’s game with no proxy restrictions is possible because the game is being held in a non-NHL market.

    Wishful thinking. (This isn’t directed towards you Rich, but if you could somehow help, awesome.)

    Speaking of Kansas City, Does anyone remember the Kansas City “Scouts” that played in 1974-76?
    They moved to Denver and became the Colorado rockies 76-82, then moved to New Jersey and are the present day Devils.

    Oh, where have the Kansas City Scouts gone? Oh, that’s right, they went to Colorado to be the Rockies, then to New Jersey to win a couple of cups as the Devils. Hey Rich, let us know if you see any Scouts jerseys there. lol

    Union station was the site of the union station massacre during the hey day of mobsters in KC. The massacre took place at the right side entrance (under the awning in photo) and there are still chip marks in the stone made by the tommy guns.
    Also, Sprint center is on the right in the photo.

    @Belexes, speaking of tommy guns, I m uncomfortable going into a preseason game without our tommy gun. dont want to see cliff have to go every game

    Belexes Reply:

    @jet,

    I’ll be honest here. I love Clifford but I’m afraid he may try and take on the wrong guy tonight. Steve McIntyre is a big strong and gifted fighter and I hope that Clifford knows it’s not his duty to fight this guy cuz Westie is out. I’m a huge fan of the fight game, but this one I don’t want to see.

    @Belexes,

    i think everyone would be OK with Cliffy skating away from this challenge should it present itself! MacIntyre is a beast and not to be taken ligthly. Westgarth has one loss and one draw to him from the AHL. Cliffy, i’m sure, knows this is not his class!
