As Terry Murray indicated yesterday, the Kings will go with an NHL-heavy lineup tomorrow against Anaheim, with all veterans except defensemen Jack Johnson — who played a massive 32 minutes on Wednesday — and Rob Scuderi getting the call. Lines will be mostly the same as in recent practices, with Anze Kopitar centering Dustin Penner and Justin Williams, with Mike Richards centering Simon Gagne and Dustin Brown, with Jarret Stoll centering Kyle Clifford and Scott Parse, and with Andrei Loktionov centering Brad Richardson and Kevin Westgarth. [corrected] On defense, as in practice, Willie Mitchell pairs with Slava Voynov. [update] In goal, Jonathan Quick and Jonathan Bernier will split the game.

Doubt Cliffy or Richardson will be sitting. There’s not many others to try and get a spot. All our prospects with the exception of Lokti, Hickey and Voynov are a year or two away at best. @Nickcypress, What someone does at practice is not a good indicator of being ready.
Loktionov was called up in 2009/2010 and on Nov 25, 2009 againt Edmonton. On his first shift in his NHL debut was hit and that was it. He was sent back to Manchester where he was not healthy until March 23rd 2010.
Loktinov made the Kings roster last season played in 19 games had 4 goals/3 assists. He was not ready and Lewis was given a chance which he proved he could play either on 4th line or 3rd line. Murray thought the game was a little too fast for Loktionov and how he wasn’t able to play as a wing went they tried him there. Murray also saw Loktionov exposed for his defensive abilities.
Loktionov was sent back to Manchester. He suffered a shoulder injury in Feb 2011 and was out for the remainder of the season. His shoulder required offseason surgery.
Here is where a problem occurs, too many centers ahead of him and not too many minutes of ice time. The 4th line would force him to be used on a energy line, and checker and play good defense. In a 4th line role, his offensive or puck handling on offense would be a waste. Stoll is your 3rd line center, so Loktionov as only a center makes it difficcult, since he is not comfortable moving to a wing, and has stated this.
It will be interesting what will happen. I’m sure he will going on the European Vacation as Andrei Griswald.

@Harty, I thought last year and the year before that Lokti looked like a frail child out on the ice. I thought he displayed skill and potential, but I thought he would get wrecked out there, and he did, having his shoulders obliterated two years in a row. I honestly thought he had no business being out there yet, and I thought the Kings were maybe rushing him and putting him into a situation he shouldn’t be in.
That being said, watching the pre-season game I was pleasantly surprised. He looks markedly stronger, on his skates, on the puck, in open ice, and along the boards. It also looks like he has more confidence. He was making plays that he probably wouldn’t have made last year, plays where last year he would’ve been knocked right off the puck onto his backside.
Personally, I think that he should still probably be in Manchester for one more year, only because I think centering the 4th line with Westgarth as his winger is a complete waste of his talent. He should play first line minutes, with a winger like Kozun, rather than sitting on the Kings bench and getting 7 minutes a game playing against other teams 4th line goons. Next year he will be a prominent King.

@Harty, I agree! Offensive skill off the charts. His defense is what needed a lot of improvement. His upper body where he has suffered 2 injuries during 2 seasons one in the NHL and one in the AHL. His ability to adjust to the speed, size and level of skill in the NHL. His ability to handle the puck in the NHL we will see but having a decent showing in practice, or a pre-season game where he did not get a point not a real indicator.
The 4th line would be a waste, just not enough ice time. Since he is a natural center who is not comfortable playing the wing makes it that much harder. The Kings made it very clear that Schenn was only playing as a center and they were not having him play a wing puts Loktionov in that same circumstance. Last season the Kings saw Loktionov’ production go down playing a wing, and then coming back when put as a center means the Kngs will have him playing in one position.
[Reply]
I really hope I see Loktionov centering Lewis and maybe Moreau this pre-season. I think Murray has to check out how Lewis is as a winger even though he had 3 assists last game. Loktionov is no longer knocking on the door, he’s kicking it it. Hopefully he doesn’t take a hint from the 3 players who left North America this season.

@danglebagel,
On your lines:
Lotki on the 4th Line is fine, especially if Murray goes with rolling 4 Lines. Any one of those lines can score. Line #3 in your pick has more grit to it. It really depends on what Murray wants – classic 4 Line set up, or roll 4, and get the other team winded.
[Reply]
Loktionov is more of a #2 center. His size and skill set aren’t geared for 3rd or 4th line work. He’s not defensive enough. He’s a playmaker. Problem is we have too much depth at that position. Trade bait for deadline deal to replace the inevitable departure of Penner.

@bitter, …Loktionov plays just as good as Lewis defensively. He added size this off season and has the skill to play any line. I think people fall to the assumption that you must be a checker or have size to play the 3rd/4th line. If Nathan Gerbe who’s 5’5″ can play the 3rd line and have no problem (16G 31P +11), I dont need to say anything else. Bottom two lines dont have as much skill, they’re job is to counter attack and forecheck. Now size helps out with that but it’s definitely not necessary.

@danglebagel, I’d have to disagree. Just by having an example of 1 to 3 players who manage to make an impact being under 5’10″ in the NHL, doesn’t mean that anybody can do it. Actually, it’s extreeeemly unlikely. I’m not saying it’s impossible, just not likely. I know we all like the “little engine that could” success stories, but reality is harsh.
At this point, I am happy because I think Lokti has shown great strides at adding some bulk and strength this off-season. I now think that he actually could survive in the NHL and be successful. I don’t think that the 4th line is his place though. Sure, arguments can go back and forth on the merits of “just getting his feet wet” and “gaining NHL experience”. I just tend to be one of those who thinks Lokti’s destiny is to be a top 6 forward, therefore should play top 6 minutes with top 6 players, even if it means playing down in the AHL one more year.
Lewis or Richardson should be the 4th line center, and players like Morreau and Hunter should be along side them.

IOW, what’s not to like for Penner. When you’ve been making 4 million a year for several years like Penner money is important, but not has much as that first contract.
I’m thinking Penner is going to want to extend that contract for a reasonable price and lenght. I’m also thinking that we are going to come to respect Penner once we see him in action this year. Penner just didn’t have the training for what we needed from him at the end of last year. He did what we needed him to do. What more can you ask of someone. Penner has been playing on the last place team for years and now he has a chance to win the cup and he’s living in SoCal where his family is. He’s also moved to a house closer to TSC. Penner is totally overpaid due to the inflated offer sheet contract he’s still on. The question is how much of a pay cut will he be willing to take?
If he has another bad year, he won’t be resigned.
But let’s say he has a good year. 20+ goals. How much of a pay cut will he take from any team as a UFA?
Will he play for 3-3.5? Not much of a discount. He could probably get that from a Florida or a Winnepeg, maybe even NYR.
I think he has to get 30+ goals to even have a chance of getting resigned here. But the problem is he will be too expensive on the open market if he has that kind of season.

Cant wait to go to the game tomorrow. I agree with some of the people on this site that having Loktionov on the 4th line with 2 guys that cant finish is a waist of his talent. i would much rather sit Stoll tomorrow and see what he can do with Parse and Clifford. Also, Jack Johnson logging 32 minutes of ice time in an exhibition game is incredible! Obviously, JJ is already in fantastic shape, and that is a credit to him. He skated and moved the puck very well the other night, but he still makes me a little nervous when he handles the puck in his own zone.
also, since JJ is not playing tomorrow, I hope TM will give Deslauriers his first shot tomorrow, I am really anxious to see what the 20 year old can do against NHL calibur opponnets.

Lokti’s main problem last season was that he was creative, but he wasn’t strong on the puck consistantly. Being on the 4rth line means he has to concentrate on being strong on the puck, not creative. We already know he can be creative, and fast, but can he be defensively strong, and strong on the puck? He has to be able to do both to have a future with the Kings, and this is the perfest time to see what he’s got. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the theme for him the entire season, with a little creative positioning sprinkled in.
Once he masters this stage in his developement, it will make him a better top line player in the future.

His skills are already there with a set of some great hands, he just has to get the timing back, as opposed to some of the rookies who actually have to develope those skills at this level. Parse has missed over a year, and will take some time, but once he gets it back, he will be dangerous.
I’d be surprised if the Kings didn’t have a little more patience with Parse over the long haul. He’s not projected to be in any Key positions where the Kings have to depend on him alone, so he’ll probably get some time. Just my thoughts on him, and the Kings might just trade him anyway.

That may be the case. All I’m saying is that the Kings will give him time. I’m not justifying it. That in my opinion is what the Kings will do. Disagreeing with me doesn’t mean it won’t happen that way.

@Dominick, No, I agree with you. I don’t see them doing anything with Parse. But they also don’t have a lot of options with him. They have nothing to lose by keeping him and giving him another shot. He doesn’t have much trade value and can’t send him down without waiving him.

@Cynic, The coach and the GM have both commented on how much skill Parse has….Now if you dont trust DL and TM …then you can argue the point that he needs to be traded or sent down….if you beleive in DL and TM …then give Parse the time needed to find his game…

What is this love affair with Westy, all you get is a descent fighter. Put Moreau and Hunter on the checking line and you get beef and fire power too.
Penner Kopi Williams
Gagne Richards Brown
Cliff Stoll Lewis
Moreau Lokti Hunter
Substitute Richardson and Parse in where needed.
