    Bill M. Reply:

    @BringbackButchGoring, Yeah. he signed a long term deal before he was even captain. Saw a lot of people question the choice, and now, I think there is little doubt he’s one of the better captains in the league.

    I think if this team makes any serious cup run with him as the C, he’s gotta get a jersey in the rafters. The resume is already starting to look worthy, and he’s not even 30:

    * Homegrown talent
    * consistent 20 goal seasons with a 30 goal season
    * 7 seasons as a king
    * 3 seasons as captain with more likely
    * Seasons with him at C have brought some success, with more likely.
    * Fan favorite
    * Epitomizes the blue collar player – he brings it every shift.
    * Gives back to the community more than almost anybody in the league.

    Add at least one good strong cup run to that list and there is NO WAY that #23 doesn’t hang from the rafters.

    That’s a lot of ice time for Johnson and he played well also. Voynov was also very impressive. He didn’t look out of place or chasing the play at all. I also really liked how Lokti is not being pushed off the puck anymore. He has learned to roll off the check and keeps his balance which is going to make him even more dangerous. Just don’t know if there is room for him.

    Was at the game in Phoenix. Lewis was the best forward for the Kings last night. If he keeps improving his game it may not be necessary to re-sign Stoll next year saving Cap Space. With Lokti coming on the Kings look deep at center for a long time.

    Kopi’s line (Penner-Williams) looked out of sync. Penner is real tease. Last night, at times, you would think what a plus it is having this guy on your team, and other times you’re left wanting much more.

    I’m a Martinez fan but last night was not impressed. He wasn’t skating hard at times and his reads were defintely off, especially when it came to pinching and holding pucks.

    Bernier was really good. Made one fantastic save on a puck that took a deflection. Will call that a “tire save”. LOL

    Toffoli has a chance to be special. Great hands but also has top flight hockey sense. He’s gonna be good and if he can improve his skating, he can be even better.

    Campbell may become an NHL’er someday. Not flashy but effective. Great reach and has the size to battle in front of the net.

    Moreau is a pro who will be hard to play against if healthy. This is going to be a deep Kings team.

    [Reply]

    puck73 Reply:

    @Crown Royal, Good analysis from you, I excpect nothing less. BTW, how did our pp look last night in Phoenix? Here in L.A it still looks boring and predictable. Gagne didnt play last night and he is a real finisher so I am hoping he will help a ton.

    [Reply]

    Crown Royal Reply:

    @puck73,

    The PP looked bad again. We had a five-on-three which we didn’t score on as usual. Toffoli was on the left point for that PP and tried a couple of one-timers like Stoll that didn’t connect.

    Penner was in front of the net on several PP’s and the point men were often Martinez and Kolomatis.

    Penner did hit a post coming down the off wing on one occasion.

    Also, the Kings used Westgarth on one of the penalty kills. The Coyotes didn’t score but it was kind of funny.

    [Reply]

    Cynic Reply:

    @Crown Royal, I appreciate this perspective. I was wondering how a fan at the PHX game would assess things.

    I’m interested in the ‘Out of sync’ quote on Penner-Kopi-Williams. Did any player in particular look out of sync with the other 2? or did all 3 look off? I think our top 6 could be pretty interchangeable and with the way Richardson performed last night, one of those 6 could go to the 3rd line for even more depth. BR – MR – DB line looked STELLAR last night! BR’s forecheck with DB’s aggressive ‘to the net’ nature and MR’s poise seemed to be deadly.

    Martinez better smarten up. I think Drewiskie’s days are numbered because of Voynov. Martinez could be replaced with Hickey you know….man, depth is something we are NOT used to with this team.

    I don’t think Toffoli makes it this year because as you mentioned his skating needs work, but he’ll kick butt in Manch, which is probably better for him anyway.

    [Reply]

    CT King Reply:

    @Cynic, Toffoli stays in LA or goes back to Juniors. Too young to go to Manchester.

    [Reply]

    Cynic Reply:

    @CT King, OK. For some reason I thought he was 20, but he’s 19. You’re right. Damn. Guess he’ll get 9 games in the show more than likely. I think he’d be perfect for Manch. Oh well..

    Crown Royal Reply:

    @Cynic,

    Kopi looked good especially early in the game. He looked a little tired towards the end of the second period.

    JW was not as quick to pucks as usual. He was trying to make plays but didn’t stand out.

    Penner was hot and cold. A couple of times he was effective taking the puck to the net with power on one occasion, and with some nice stick handling on the other.

    Penner and Kopi didn’t seem to be reading each other particularly well. Williams was going to the right places on the ice as usual but there was a lack of chemistry last night with the entire line. Hopefully that will work itself out.

    Crown Royal Reply:

    @outsider,

    Neither player was exactly flying, but of course, this was a practice game. Kopi went down once in the corner from a trip or hook and got up slowly. Maybe he was tired but appeared he was in a little pain. Hope he’s 100 percent over the injury.

    mash-ola Reply:

    @Crown Royal, Imagine a productive, hardworking line of Trevor Lewis, Brad Richardson (who looked great last night filling in for Gagne on the first line), and Ethan Moreau. A solid fourth/third line… what’s that leave?… Stoll/Clifford and Loktionov? That’s some pretty good depth at the forward lines.

    Penner/Kopitar/Williams
    Gagne/Richardson/Brown
    Clifford/Stoll/Loktionov

    @Nick, I agree. My prediction for the 4th line is Hunter on rw, Moreau on lw, and an ever improving, and impressing Trevor Lewis at center with Westgarth as an extra, to play when we need an enforcer.
    If you remember when the Ducks won it in 07, that 4th line of Niedermeyer, Moen, and Pahlsson was crucial to their success. I think this line can be special as well.

    @puck73, Hunter looked slow out there last night and chased the play on many occasions. I don’t think we need him. If he couldn’t make the Islanders line-up and New Jersey bought him out why would we invite him onto to a potential Stanley Cup team?

    @Mikey, just realized our great problem of trying to fit a potential top 6 in a 4th line role. rolling 4 lines with confidence is like that wave of cold air that hits your nose first thing in the morning for practice.

    puck73 Reply:

    @Mikey, Lewis is a natural defensive center, STOP IT ALREADY !

    VanKingsFan Reply:

    @Mikey, this will work in the regular season for the most part, but not in the playoffs.

    I watched Vancouver get bullied and beaten down to lose the cup partyl because their bottom 6 was not big enough or tough enough or sand papery enough.

    I am not saying we need Westy, but I think a 4th line of Moreau, Lewis, Hunter, Clune, etc would be more effective come crunch time.

    Was at the game last night at Staples and the Kings looked solid. They deserved a better fate than a shootout loss. They dominated most of the game. Over 40 shots last night. Just a few observations from the D-Men:

    Voynov – Looked really good. There were times when he was a little hesitant and made a couple of questionable passes, but he just needs to get used to the NHL tempo. Really good in his own end. I think he’s going to be an all-star in a couple of year.

    Hickey – I thought he looked good. Had a goal that was disallowed. Made real smart decisions out there and was surprisingly pretty physical. He drilled a couple of Coyotes. He looks like he’ll be a solid NHL player someday.

    Muzzin – Looked kind of shakey last night. First goal was his fault. Let the puck and his man go right by him. I’ve seen him play better games. He’ll be fine though.

    Johnson – JMFJ looked awesome last night. He made a couple of end to end rushes that made people go to the edge of their seats. I think someone pulled him aside and said if Doughty’s not here you’re the man, now go play like it. Really stepped up. His defense was really good too. Broke up a couple of centering passes to Coyotes and One on One the Coyotes were having a hard time going around him.

    I didn’t see Martinez last night in Phoenix, so I’m not sure how much he’s improved. From what I saw, Voynov looks like he could really challenge for a spot.

    mash-ola Reply:

    @E-Dog, Spot on on your critiques. I expected a little more poise and maturity from Hickey though… it was my first glimpse of him in an NHL game and since he’s been the organization a little longer, I guess my expectations were just higher. He looked good, but in a scramble for the last spot(s) on D, he wouldn’t be my top choice. Hopefully he has a good camp and impresses, though…

    Markisonfire Reply:

    @KingsFanFTW, No way. Lewis is all but gauranteed to make the roster.

    Penner – Kopitar – Williams
    Gagne – Richards – Brown
    Clifford – Stoll – Richardson
    xxxxx – Lewis – xxxxx

    Scuderi – Johnson
    Mitchell – xxxxx
    xxxxx – Greene

    Quick
    Bernier

    Those are the spots that are gauranteed. Doughty will play once he signs. I would guess that Moreau and Westgarth will rotate between the fourth line and the press box. Will Martinez make the club? He has an inside shot at it for sure. Will Drewiske make it? Maybe. There are a few spots that are up for the taking, depends on who impresses.

    I’ve never really seen Parse play to much, but last night he looked bad. Maybe it was just one game. I know people have said he has top 6 forward skills, but last night he looked like he shouldn’t even be in the NHL. Even his shootout attempt was bad. Like I said, maybe it was just a bad game.

    [Reply]

    Dominick Reply:

    @E-Dog,
    Everybody really.

    I didn’t see it as all that bad. Parse got a lot of touches on the puck. He tried passes to the middle that didn’t connect, but he at least gained possesion to be available to make those passes. His skating was good. He needs some work on his board play, and he needs to be a little stronger on the puck, but the guy hasn’t really played a lot in over a year.

    Watching him skate, I saw no evidence of lingering effects from a hip injury. His timing isn’t a skill he has to learn, but a skill he has to get back. Big difference when you consider the time he’s missed. This is why we have camp. Specifically to help guys like Parse get ready.

    Everybody, take a look at what he’s working on, and see where he needs to work. I gaurentee you he will improve game by game. I do think that a couple of months wouldn’t be unreasonable to get him back to peak perfomance given how much time he lost being injured in service to the Kings, and the Kings are deep enough that Parse is not in a key position to hurt the Kings, so lets give him more than 1 exhibition game.

    A few observations about the game last night in LA. I thought EVERYONE looked out of sync, passes were not connecting, the puck seemed to be between both blue lines for many parts of the game. Now this is critical given the first game action in 5 months.
    Individually, I thought Richardson was the best guy on the ice as well as Brown. Richards looked OK, but completely understandable.

    I thought Hunter was awful, I mean bloody awful. He should be cut immediately. I thought Loktionov was terribly ineffective, didnt know when to pass or shoot. Voynov looked comfortable but not great, maybe a tad slower than all the hype.

    Cant be to hard on the guys given it was a split squard preseason game, the first one. Ill expect a better performance as they continue to get game action.

    BringbackButchGoring Reply:

    @tim chaney,

    I say Martinez without question unless you are judging only on last night’s game. Plays the man well, rarely is out of position and SHOOTS on target on pp. Although not the end all/be all, he did finish only 2 pts behind Doughty as top plus/minus defensemen and played 20 fewer games. Voynov’s time will come as may not be as important to re-sign one of the veteran defensemen in next year or two and use that cap space for offense. No matter how much one likes Scuderi and Mitchell, they have likely reached their peak and are not going to get better year after year.

    [Reply]

    tim chaney Reply:

    @BringbackButchGoring, if martinez is on his game in camp, then i can see what youre saying. voynov was one of the top dmen in the ahl last year, can skate like crazy, and is rarely out of place. great offensive upside as well. great point about scuds and mitch, for they have seen the peak of their careers. i dont know who ultimately wins out, but i expect tosee them both no later than next year.

    Game in LA was pretty disappointing with 3 PP’s in a row and no results. Still a major issue apparently. The thing that stood out the most to me was mf’n Richardson. That guy was a beast last night on all fronts. Really pulling for a 3rd line spot for that guy.

    p.s 3 penalties for Clifford (not including the fighting major) and from what I saw on the replays he didn’t do anything wrong on any of them, including the “goalie interference” which would have tied it up early. It’s the first pre-season game and the refs already have it out for the Kings.
