Here’s a rundown of how things are going at Staples Center, with the Kings playing the Phoenix Coyotes…
THIRD PERIOD
In goal: It’s the Kings’ Martin Jones against the Coyotes’ Louis Domingue.
End of period: The Kings outshot the Coyotes 9-7 in a scoreless third period.
OVERTIME
End of period: Shots were 40-22 in favor of the Kings.
SHOOTOUT
Kings: Loktionov, save.
Coyotes: O’Sullivan, save.
Kings: Brown, GOAL.
Coyotes: Miele, GOAL.
Kings: Stoll, no goal.
Coyotes: MacLean, no goal.
Kings: Parse, save.
Coyotes: Ekman-Larsson, GOAL.
SECOND PERIOD
In goal: It’s still Quick vs. Pogge.
Kings 1, Coyotes 1: The Kings tied the game with a power-play goal 5:53 into the second period. Mike Richards shot from the right circle and, with Dustin Brown running traffic in front, Slava Voynov skated in and knocked in the loose puck.
End of period: The Coyotes outshot the Kings 8-6 in the second period. Quick stopped 12 of 13 shots in his two periods of action.
FIRST PERIOD
In goal: It’s the Kings’ Jonathan Quick against the Coyotes’ Justin Pogge to start the game.
Coyotes 1, Kings 0: The Kings killed an early penalty but allowed the first goal. Darian Dziurzynski held the puck behind the net and centered to Ethan Werek, who beat Davis Drewiske to the front of the net and beat Quick with a high one-time shot at the 8:21 mark.
Boedker game misconduct: With 7:43 remaining in the first period, Phoenix’s Mikkel Boedker got a boarding major and a game misconduct. Boedker leveled Jake Muzzin with a hit from behind into the glass near center ice. Muzzin skated back to the bench, seeming OK.
Goal disallowed: The Kings, on the power play, appeared to tie the game with 6:13 left, on a Thomas Hickey point shot, but the goal was immediately disallowed and Kyle Clifford got a minor penalty for goalie interference.
End of period: The Kings outshot the Coyotes 22-5 but couldn’t get on the scoreboard.

I think Richard’s got that very similar mojo. I’m hoping there’s no ego clashing along the way to mess things up.

@sloppy joe, Oh yea, and one of the fastest guys in BOTH leagues! I’m not taking anything away from Hickey tho. He looks strong; he has great vision of the ice and good hockey sense. He is very sound positionally. Muzzin seemed to be getting bumped off the puck a little; I just wasn’t impressed with his physical game. Voynov on the other hand brought everything, great speed, a very good shot and excellent positional hockey.

@BKinLV,
nobodies making that much right now. Players don’t get paid to be in camp. Their contracts have to do with regular season games and how many they play. Camp is volentary, and you have to be invited to participate. The pay is the same, unless they miss the regular season, then the games are pro-rated. Same with playoffs. Kopi didn’t miss any money for missing them last season.
Dominick Reply:
September 21st, 2011 at 10:59 pm
@Moondoggie, That is how I see it also. I think as far as needs, Muzz is a highbrid, and therefore more useful, but those 3 could easily be the front runners early.
A few others have the potential to sneak by them through the rest of camp, and a few more exhibition games though.

@KC23,
I thought he was O.K. He showed good speed (which is my main concern considering the hip injury), and the skating is there. He wasn’t strong on the puck. He also looked to take the puck to the outside, and pass inside a lot. his dot to boards play needs some work (better puck protection). Timing issues with getting the puck through, but over all not a bad 1rst game, just not a stand out game for him either (which is probably what everybodies looking for right now). I think the timing will come. It’s been 2 years since he had any real time on the ice. Parse is a project (but a good one).

Well, I am totally stoked that hockey is back!! Here is my observation of some of the Kings:
Mike Richards: Wow!! He will be a fan favorite very quick!!
Brad Richardson: Hard work every time out, Love his game
Slava Voynov: Drew who? This 21 yr old is the real deal!!
Jack Johnson: This will be a career year for Jack. Bet on it!!
Jonathon Quick: He is now got himself into “elite” status
Rob Scuderi: Like a rock, solid every shift
Andrei Loktionov: Really look improved!! I think he can stick with the big club
Kyle Clifford: This kid really gets it. Hard work, tough as nails a talented Ian Lapierre
Trent Hunter: Liked what he brought to the game. Excellent 3rd/4th line player
Scott Parse: Looked AWFUL!! If today is any indication, Ontario Reign is where he should play
Jake Muzzin: Game looked too fast for him, he needs more time in Manchester
Davis Drewiske: Looked out of place, I think he could easily be sent to Manchester
Power(less) Play 1-5 including a 5 minute major UGH!!
Positive start to begin the pre-season. Looks like Doughty might not be as missed as we thought.

@PlayToWin, I would agree with most of your assessments. Although, as much as I agree about Drewiske and would rather have someone in his place, I believe he’ll still be with the big club, only because I believe he’d have to clear waivers if sent to Manchester.
[Reply]
Moondoggie Reply:

@PlayToWin, Can’t argue with your assessment. Richards is going to be fun to watch; I’m actually glad we didn’t get the “other” Richards. I hated the trade that cost us Schenner but Mike Richards is for real!
Brad Richardson, was it just me or did you chuckle listen to Darryl & Nick talk about Richards and Richardson?? Yea me too!
Slava Voynov, I like what Muzz brings to the game but Voynov seems to bring so much more. This is going to be a tough call, especially with the way Hickey played. If locker assignments have anything to do with it, Voynov makes the roster (LOL). He’s a great skater, has an excellent shot, can play the physical game, is a decent defender and plays very sound positional hockey.
Thomas Hickey, so that’s why DL picked him 4th overall, eh?? I actually feel bad for Hickey but in the end he will be a King for hopefully a long time; he’s good, very good. The kid has some great leadership skills too (did you catch his interview with Darryl the other day?). He’s mature beyond his years. What impresses me most about Hickey is his hockey sense, he’s never out of position and he always makes the right decision and the good pass. He’s more physical too and much bigger than when we first saw him in 2007. He’ll probably never win the Norris but he’s going to be around for a very long time.
Trent Hunter, will make an excellent 3rd-4th line RW and if injuries take their toll he’s right there to fill a spot. The perfect addition (way to go DL, again!).
Looks like Tyler Toffoli had a good night over in PHX….man this team is STACKED!
[Reply]
Remember everybody… this is pre-season to where we see which rookies are ready to be 2nd – 3rd string. (and who can replace that guy on “D” that I dont remember his name. Over-all I was very impressed with this game and seeing some of the boys.
See you all at Frozen Fury!
[Reply]
Waiting for the next thread to give my assessment, but just one thing that’s easy to type out quick…
Drewiskie may be on a one way deal, but Voynov > Drewiskie. We could carry 7 until Drew comes back, but after that….
Drewiskie could be on waivers. We could trade for a pick, but I think Voynov could take his spot. He looked outstanding.

@Cynic, Very true that Voynov > Drewiskie, but if DD comes back, VV shouldn’t be sitting in the press box, that’s DD2′s spot on this team. Now with that said, I could very well see VV outplaying AM and taking his spot if/when DD comes back. AM struggled a little down the stretch last year, and VV’s ceiling is higher than AM IMO.
[Reply]
Agree Voynov looked very good.
I thought Lokti and Richards looked GREAT. Quickie was good as always.
Stoll, Parse, Muzzin didn’t impress
[Reply]
Jones did great for 3rd period and OT but still needs more work on Shootout tho..I dont think any goalies have a chance to kick either one out of the roster Quick or Bernier they are too dam good so we not going to see a change on there.
But TM i didnt know what he was thinking of picking Parse over Richards
Parse didnt even impress me at all.
Stoll goals usually 75% chance to go in to me now am wondering if its the same as last year.Hi miss that not like him hope he shakes that dust off..
Brown didnt fall guys! I cant not believe that LOL jk jk
Quick did amazing even tho that goal that went in wasnt his fault. But liked those saves.
Muzzin ugh still needs more work to be done.
Hickey i dont know yet…
M.Richards to me even if he didnt score but he sure got a point out on the PP looks like that what we need it.He did great so far lets hope he can keep it up.
B.Richardson Did pretty good too.
Clifford needs to get those penalties out of his system fast before the real season begins even tho some were bad calls on him.
Hunter he looks decent so far, maybe there something left in him.
Lokti to me he was lil lokti now his Buff Lokti LOL to me he looks pretty solid and bigger than last season. He alot skillful.I think he can make a decent run on the roster but believe will come out sort.
Stoll did decnt in my eyes but he will still be good.
JJ he needs to know how to hit the Net.but overall he is starting to take the bodies more often lets hope this new side will bring something good.
