`Kids’ press conference’ videos

There have been quite a few questions/comments/emails about the “kids’ press conference” from Hockey Fest on Sunday with Jonathan Quick, Kevin Westgarth, Kyle Clifford and Matt Greene, so here are the links to some of the highlights. They might temporary distract you from Drew Doughty Anxiety Syndrome (DDAS) before this afternoon’s rookie game. Probably not, but some of them are pretty priceless…

    @CraigJButton: Doughty negotiations: Kings want to tie Doughty to Kopitar’s 6.8. Next 5 years of Kopitar’s deal = 7.12 AAV. The 7.12 is current market IMO.

    [Reply]

    StillneedDewey FKA PakiFro Reply:

    @Subby, So five years at 7.12M? I think that’d be fair for both sides.

    I truly don’t think Kopitar (or any player) gets upset because someone has a larger “cap hit”. I think actual dollars would be what they really look at. Cap hits are for GMs and fans to worry about.

    About the whole Drew Doughty situation I believe the Kings have the upper hand. Even tough they don’t sign him to a new contract they keep his rights until he is 26 (I believe this is the case, please correct me if I am not, because I don’t really know if it’s true), so that means 5 more seasons of no NHL hockey for DD. He could only go to Europe, probably the KHL and I don’t believe he would do well over there (language, different ice,…). He would probably try to come back to the NHL after the Kings lose his rights and after 5 years of playing in the KHL there is no way he would get 7 million dollars per year. The Kings should give him time until friday to sign the contract that they are offering him (6.8 is a lot of money) or they will pull the offer and he can go to Europe if he wants to. Yes, it will hurt the blue line but they still have some pretty good players in the minors that could come to the NHL and play well enough. Of course this is all based on the assumption that they have his rights until he is 26.
    Wow, this is one very long post. :D

    nykingfan Reply:

    @LF13,

    You’re not necessarily wrong, but which of the kids in the minors/junior is ready to come up and play 25+ minutes a night against the best players on the opposing team, play PK/PP/Regular shift and excel at it right off the bat? oh yeah I forgot..and become an intregal part of a Stanley Cup contending team?
    I have a hunch the answer is NONE!

    The Kings certainly can play harball, but at what expense?
    As a fan of this team for a looooong time, we’re finally on the door step of being a legitimate cup contender. Long gone are the days of watching Brian Willsie/Kyle Calder/Fukofuji/Cloutier/etc pretending to be NHL players playing at Staples Center.
    If you think for a second that I’m going to be ok with a $200k per year gap standing in the way of the Kings winning a cup..well you get my drift!

    I still think he’s signed by the weekend.

    [Reply]

    E-Dog Reply:

    @nykingfan,

    You also have to realize that the Doughty of last year (the 40 pt Defensemen) doesn’t take us to the Stanley Cup. The Doughty of two years ago (Norris Trophy Finalist) is what takes us to the Stanley Cup.

    [Reply]

    nykingfan Reply:

    @E-Dog,

    I think we’ll see a better version of the 2009/2010 Doughty.
    If the Kings thought that they were going to get what DD gave them last season, They wouldn’t be making an offer of $6.8 mil per year.

    There are no sure things in life or hockey. Guys get paid either on potential, which doesn’t always work out, or they get paid for past performance, which doesn’t always dictate future results.
    The Kings are banking on DD’s potential and I think they’re right in doing so, but only time will tell.

    OK DD Whats your worth?

    Tyler Meyers rookie of the year in 20!0, just signed 7 year 5.5 mil cap

    Tavares just signed for 6 years for 5.5 mil cap

    Both franchise players.

    SO the Kings should now offer you less now??? DL should just let DD set it out and just offer him a 6 mil cap for 7 years now.

    Bring on VV and lets see what Alec can do on the Power Play. Let DD sit in Toronto and eat his potato chips and watch LA show his service will be missed, but only by a few potato chips left in his bag to eat.

    NHL stars Zdeno Chara, Marian Hossa and Marian Gaborik were among the thousands who gathered at the arena in Trencin, Slovakia, where Demitra started his career in 1992. Demitra was the captain of Slovakia’s national team at the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics.

    I think we should sign Doughty to a short-term deal for now, at a somewhat lesser amount; then his worth will become more obvious for a long-term deal.

    Zach Bogosian, who is somewhat comparable to Doughty, just signed for two years.

    http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/6970688/winnipeg-jets-zach-bogosian-agree-new-deal

    I hope Doughty is not overdoing his portion, which could hinder the Kings in the future.

    @King John, I’d trade doughty for bogosian and evander Kane? Just saying. Feel free to roast me now

    [Reply]

    King John Reply:

    @KH, If Doughty’s pay messes with the Kings ability to stay winners, that means he doesn’t have the best interest of the team in mind, which could be a problem. Does that mean we should trade him? Well, I really like DD but I think we definitely should NOT overpay him!

    [Reply]

    King John Reply:

    @KH, Bogosian (Պողոսեան > Boghosian > Poghosian > Paulos-ian = son of Paulus or Paul!) is Armenian like me, but I don’t know enough about his play to compare to DD. They said he signed for 5 mil over two years (2 mil this year and 3 mil next). That sounds reasonable. Armenians would love to have him play here.

    (Note for linguists and Bob Miller and Jim Fox: the s in Boghosian is a soft unvoiced s and the g –from gh– is a really light [gargle] sound, thus Bo-(g)ho-ssian. The o’s are somewhat long.)

    Reading article in The Sporting News. Talking w/ Logan Couture regarding Drew Doughty’s frustration on talks with Kings: “It’s definitely been tough on him to be waiting so long and not knowing what’s going on.”.

    REALLY????

    I guess DD really is letting his agent handle this alone. At this point, wouldn’t you think Drew would tell his agent to fill him in? Is Drew that dense? Gotta wonder man….

    [Reply]

    @cynic, yeah, it’s getting a bit ridiculous

    @cynic, I hope that by Thursday night DD gives Meehan a phone call to inquire whether or not he should plan on attending the opening of camp…

    [Reply]

    AZ King Reply:

    @cynic,

    Is he dense or just young an inexperienced. I’m sure Meehan told him “just let me handle this” from day one. Think back to when you were 21, would you feel confident in taking things over yourself, or would you just trust that this guy knows what he’s doing?

    It is interesting that Meehan represents both Luke Schenn and Doughty, and they are the last two big name free agents out there. Toronto seems more confident about Schenn, but who knows what’s really going on behind the scenes there.

    [Reply]

    Bill M. Reply:

    @AZ King, Yeah. When I was 21, the only thing that would cause me to take charge of a situation was if someone tried to tell me what kind of beer to drink…

    [Reply]

    Stuart Reply:

    @AZ King, there’s a big difference in taking things over oneself and not having a clue as to what’s going on. He doesn’t have to represent himself but he should at least “know” how his representation is thinking in his best interest. He is definitely inexpeienced in these matters but he’d have to be dense to not take an interest especially when he considers that he’s going to go through this at least 2-3 more times in the course of his career.

    Here’s an idea I haven’t seen yet on this blog. I think Doughty will sign eventually, but who knows when. Plus if he’s unhappy for what he signs for, then I can see Doughty letting it effect his play on the ice. Again this is only a last resort, but what do you guys think about trading Doughty for Shea Weber. I mean I’m sure Nashville wouldn’t want Doughty as those salary demands so you would have to find a third team probably. Get a bunch of prospects in on the deal. Good idea or bad idea? Just curious what you guys think.

    [Reply]

    KingsFanFTW Reply:

    @E-Dog, well this whole thing going with Doughty we really dont know whats going on…All we know what the reporters is telling us.We all know reports can make something small turn out to be big at times.This time it is big but Dl and Doughty agent will find a command ground and make a good deal that fits both of them.If not then Doughty going to look bad to us Kings fan..

    @E-Dog,

    Didn’t Weber get over $7 mil a year thru arbitration? Why would the Kings want a guy who’s going to end up costing them more than DD?
    If the Kings want Kopi to be the highest paid player, how would it go over that they traded their own guy because he was asking for more than Kopi and get a guy back who’s already making more than Kopi?
