Rookie game: Coyotes 8, Kings 7 (Final)

Here’s how the scoring went for tonight’s rookie game between the Kings and Phoenix Coyotes…

FIRST PERIOD
Phoenix 1, Kings 0:
Evan Bloodoff beat Martin Jones from the right circle at the 1:11 mark. Assist to Colin Long.
Kings 1, Phoenix 1: Brandon Kozun scored a power-play goal on the Kings’ first attempt with the man advantage, off an offensive-zone faceoff win. Assists to Linden Vey and Jake Muzzin, 8:51 into the period.
Kings 2, Phoenix 1: Andy Andreoff scored on a wraparound, 11:09 into the period. Assists to Jake Muzzin and Michael Schumacher. Right after the ensuing faceoff, Andreoff fought Harrison Ruopp.
Kings 2, Phoenix 2: The Coyotes tied the game with a power-play goal at the 17:20 mark. Lucas Lessio shot through traffic from the right circle and the puck deflected off the post and went in. Chris Summers got an assist.
Kings 3: Phoenix 2: Just 17 seconds after Phoenix tied the game, the Kings took the lead back. Tyler Toffoli’s breakaway chance was stopped by goalie Mark Vistenin, but Jordan Weal picked up the rebound and scored from close range. Ray Kaunisto also got an assist at the 17:37 mark.
End of first: The Kings went 1-for-1 on the power play and Phoenix went 1-for-3. The Coyotes will be on the power play for the first 1:46 of the second period. Shots were 21-17 in favor of the Coyotes in the first period.

SECOND PERIOD
Kings 4, Phoenix 2: Robert Czarnik scored a shorthanded goal 1:03 into the second period, unassisted, after a Phoenix offensive-zone turnover.
Kings 5, Phoenix 2: Andy Andreoff’s second goal of the game gave the Kings a three-goal lead 7:17 into the second period. Michael Schumacher and Rob Mignardi got assists, and the game was delayed by a broken glass pane in the corner.
Kings 5, Phoenix 3: Evan Bloodoff scored a shorthanded goal 10:10 into the second period, his second goal of the game. Bloodoff carried the puck into the Kings’ zone, pulled up at the right circle and whipped a wrist shot past Jones. Colin Long picked up an assist.
Kings 6, Phoenix 3: Brandon Kozun was credited with the 5-on-3 goal after a Kings offensive-zone faceoff win and a close-range wrist shot. It was Kozun’s second goal of the game, at 11:36, with an assist to Nicolas Deslauriers.
End of second: Things got messy in the second, as there was a fight, a 10-minute misconduct and 11 minor penalties, including a trip by Coyotes goalie Mark Visentin. Each team scored a shorthanded goal and the Kings scored a 5-on-3 goal. Through two periods, shots are 35-32 in favor of the Kings, with Martin Jones totaling 29 saves.

THIRD PERIOD
Kings 6, Phoenix 4: Chris Gibson started the third period in goal for the Kings and got beat by the first shot he faced, a medium-range wrist shot by Darian Dziurzynski 18 seconds into the period. Michael Stone and Chris Summers got assists.
Kings 6, Phoenix 5: The Coyotes, already on the power play, scored on a delayed-penalty situation 6:41 into the period, as Andy Miele scored on a short wrist shot from the high slot, unassisted.
Kings 6, Phoenix 6: The Coyotes’ third goal of the period came 7:20 in, on the power play, and tied the game. Brendan Shinnimin scored the power-play goal, with assists to Colin Long and goalie Marc Cheverie.
Phoenix 7, Kings 6: A fourth consecutive goal gave the Coyotes the lead 10:07 into the period. A rebound stayed in the crease and, after a scramble, Brett Hextall knocked the loose puck past Gibson. Darian Dziurzynski got an assist.
Phoenix 8, Kings 6: Gibson’s tough period continued as Brett Hextall scored his second goal of the period, on the power play, with an assist from Andy Miele at the 13:59 mark.
Phoenix 8, Kings 7: The Kings capped the scoring with 2.8 seconds remaining, when Ray Kaunisto tapped in a beautiful cross-ice pass from Brandon Kozun at close range.

Kozun can easily play RW4 when Westy is not in the lineup. Kid is crafty.

Reminds me of Lokti when he banked that shot off the goalies stick, only Kozun does that every shift.

This will likely doom him in Murray’s system. He will be a top 6 some where in the league in the next 3 years.

    [Reply]

    Dominick Reply:

@Token, I’m not sure yet, but I think Kozun could give Lokti a run for his money as far as that depth position on the big club.

    [Reply]

    Token Reply:

@Dominick, With Toffoli and Weal in the mix, Kozun will not get his chance with the Kings. This year is his chance to make the club since there is a RW slot open. If he doesn’t make it its trade or Europe for him, I’m afraid.

    [Reply]

    Dominick Reply:

    @Token,
With Toffoli, and Weal, I think the Kings have the benefit of time. Unless one of those 2 just makes it impossible for DL to send them down, Kozun could end up with the longer look. I agree though, this is the year for Kozun to make his move, or the door could close for him at the end of the season (maybe sooner).

    Jones – rock star

Deslaurier – best power forward ;) – jokes aside, did fine. I can now understand why so many fans have a man-crush on this kid. Needs to develop though.

Gibson is young. It’s one game. Just shell shocked.

I thought the whole team was sloppy in the 3rd. PK was crap. The team stopped playing early. 40 minutes.

Andreoff looked REAL good. Could be the surprise of camp.

Toffoli is the real deal man. Drives to the net like he owns it. I hope he dominates in Manchester because I think he will with his skill and mentality. Next year, he makes the club full time if he continues like this.

Expected more out of Kaunisto, but it’s early. The one punch drop was nice though. I thought he would have has a Gordie Howe Hat Trick in this type of game.

Muzzin looked like he was holding back or something. The boarding penalty he took was sloppy. IDK.

Deslauries plays big. I didn’t think he was all that but was solid.

    Tryouts did not impress much.

Weal, Kozun, Vey, man we have some talent in the wings!

    Win tomorrow.

  75. Nyck says:

This was the first time I was impressed by Czarnik. He was absolutely relentless on the forecheck, reminded me of a Brad Marchand. He was all over, especially on the PK, and he scored a beauty.

Jones looked just ok to me, a goal or two looked pretty stoppable, but he also made some pretty solid saves as well. No need to go trading Bernier or Quick just yet.

Kozun really put together a strong game. I didn’t see him getting caught up ice, or out of position defensively, he really made things happen offensively, and he picked the corner like a true sniper on one of his two goals. I’m still a little curious to see him handle bigger stronger guys, he doesn’t seem undeniably strong on the puck to me yet.

Toffoli has really got a shot, and knows exactly where to be in the offensive zone. Not a real fast player, or real flashy, but he puts himself in good position to get scoring chances pretty consistently.

Andreoff really blew me away with his play. He was the absolute beast of this one. Muscled people around all game long, went to the net with purpose, and really put up a good scrap. I can see him really making a case to stick around longer than anyone thought.

Gibson. I’ll just say, he was the opposite of spectacular.

Our defense as a whole, really took the 3rd period off, that was a little bit concerning, but individually, I think some guys really stood out.

@Nyck, Andreoff has stood out to me since Development camp. I have friends that have watched him play with the Generals (OHL) they say the guy is a pure leader on the ice

Hope to see more of these games, it would also be nice if they could show some of the Monarchs games over the net. Just don’t want to see more of what was seen tonight.

Well this just reminded me of GM 3. My two cents.. Gibson isn’t very good at tracking the puck, pretty much every puck he let in was a weak goal he didn’t see coming. It’s understandable, he was just drafted but I heard he put up good numbers on one of the worst teams in the minors. I didn’t see that player here he looked lost.

Muzzin and Deslauriers looked pretty solid to me, solid defense, physical, winning board battles and good in front of the net. Room for improvement, they had trouble with puck control and making good plays consistently, but they seem close.

As far as the Kozun vs. Toffoli debate.. It’s clear to me Toffoli needs time in the AHL. He was very confident with the puck and good on the rush. There were some plays he could have made to his teammates that ended up in him turning the puck over. Kozun seemed to be the better of the two, not only in production but in involvement as well. The thing that puts it over the top was Kozun’s battle level along the boards and his intensity was there every shift. He was good on both sides of the ice, cycling the puck well, and was generally in good position. Although at times he made some strange decisions in the neutral zone that seemed to turn on him.

It’ll be interesting to hear what coaching staff got out of this game

Just got back from the game and I almost felt bad only paying $10 for tickets. A lot of action and fighting. It was cool to see Alec Martinez and Kopi roaming around in the crowd. I also asked Kopi how his ankle was and he just simply said “It’s great”. Looks like #11 is at 100%. Finally! the season is right around the corner!

6.8M for 7 years, if true, sounds like a fair offer. I heard somewhere it was 6.8 for 9 years which I could see Doughty saying was too long into his ufa years. While I believe this (6.8 for 7) is a fair offer I really don’t believe we need to put an imaginary ceiling at Kopitars salary. Saying we won’t pay more than 6.8 just because that is what Kopi makes. Players sign contracts for what makes sense for them at the current market value. Some players focus on length of contract, nmc’s, signing bonuses etc…. Other players focus more on the average salary.
You could rank the players on any team #1 to #20, and see that the salary they are paid doesn’t come anywhere near that ranking. My point is, its very often the case that your best player is not the highest paid player on the team. Kopi can address that at his next negotiation if he wants. I’m not saying DD deserves more than 6.8, I’m just saying that is not some magical number that we shouldn’t cross.
