The Kings and veteran forward Ethan Moreau have agreed to terms on a one-year contract that is likely to be finalized Monday. Moreau, who turns 36 next month, was limited to 37 games last season and spent the bulk of his career in Edmonton, where he served as captain for part of his time with the Oilers. Moreau is known as a gritty defensive player and leader.
[UPDATE: Moreau's deal with the Kings would be for one year, $600,000.]

If Parse and Westgarth are watching games from the pressbox, I’m fine.

@Deadmarsh, It is difficult to rag on Modin and Halpern. They were both brought in at the trade deadline and didn’t have lots of time to learn a new system and all and be productive. Modin did ok but Halpern had an injury that didn’t help. Now had both started the season with L.A. and went through training camp, I am sure it would of been a lot different. We all saw how well Halpern did in Montreal. Penner was in the same boat. I expect with training camp and better conditioning, Penner will be alot better.

Bill M. Reply:

@Jeff, Some guys on NHL network did a look back at deadline deals during the last deadline day, and noticed that teams that tried to make deadline deals rarely win cups. The thinking is that if you already have a complete team, no need. If you don’t, then you have a hole that is important to fill and some guy won’t be able to fill it when he just arrived a month before the playoffs.
Boston is an exception, they went for Kaberle – but even then he was a weak link on the team, a borderline liability at times…

@Chaz,
Modin stepped up in the playoff and picked up two big goals toward the end of that season. I doubt you will see that from Moreau.
Moreau’s stats from the past few years do not support his scoring much and defensively did not not look to good either through admittedly he played on weak teams.
If for some reason someone had to be bumped and would face waivers I’d bet bet it would be Moreau.

@von_swine, Zus is and was one of my favorite Kings of all time and worth every penny he was paid. He was not brought in just to win faceoffs or win the Selke, he was brought in because he is one of the heardest working players in the NHL. Every kid who dreams of making the NHL should watch Zus and learn from him on how to truly play the game. It isn’t all just about stats with Zus. Dustin may be tha Captain, but I think the true leader these last 4 years was Zus. The King are where they are because of him. The young players got to learn how to play the game, by working hard, with heart, never taking a shift off. Guys like Clifford, Simmonds, Lewis, Richie and our top guys are all better players having played with him. The sad part is when we win Zus won’t be here to reap the rewards, but I will say that when we do win the players will know that a big reason they won is because of Zus. I will be watching the Sharks a teeny little bit this season just to see Zus.

Good job, Dean. Just what we’ve been harping about! The Kings needed a little gray hair in the bottom 6 forwards to complement Clifford, Lewis, Parse, etc.. @KC23, I agree with you. If Parse is healthy in training camp this year unlike last year, then with his hockey IQ and soft hands I definately see him making this team. Also, in the 5 gmaes he played with Kopitar and Williams, that line never played better, and Kopitar had more room to operate then at anytime he played last season. In other words, Scott Parse created space and was a plus player for the 2nd year in a row…JJ could only fantasize about such things for the moment.

@KC23, Did Parse date these haters’ sister or repossess their car for the level of hate heaped upon such a skilled player?
Like it or not, Parse has skills and will do pretty well in the NHL. I just hope it is with the Kings and not some other team (see Purcell).
True judges of talent will recognize that.
As for the crow, let the haters eat it raw and unplucked!
WOW…serious leadership & character in this room now. Solid depth signing. If it works out, good for both parties. I think this puts a serious challenge out to Scott Parse to step it up for good and is also an insurance policy in case one of the LWs gets injured.
This is going to be a tough team to beat and a bitter team to play against a second time when they lose, although I certainly don’t foresee a whole lot of losing in our immediate future. Get DD signed and we should be golden for the season.

What does this signing have to do with Dustin Penner??? C’mon Niidan, please think before typing. Penner is a top-six forward who will probably score 25-30 goals this year. Moreau is 36 years old, who’s career high of 32 points was six or seven seasons ago. plus, he only got a one year deal for almost the league minimum. The guy is not George Blanda. Hell, he isn’t even Jim Plunkett. Neither is Penner a Doug Wickenheiser.
With out a doubt, Penner had some problems when he arrived here last year. Nevertheless, one needs to remember that he is a professional athlete with a fair share of pride. He will come out this year with all cylinders firing and all who judge this guy’s entire life by 20 games last year will will finally be shut up.

@InTheCrease,
Penner was booed with regularity while playing for Edm. When we acquired him, I thought that he would work to prove his detractors wrong. On the contrary, he just coasted for the last 20 games. Or maybe that’s his style of play. Whatever it is, its not impressive.
I cannot imagine needing any more incentive to excel. Starting on the 1st line on a Stanley Cup contender. Final year of a contract. Scott Parse chomping on his heels for the top spot. He’s got size and skill. All that seems to be missing from his game is Pride Passion & Power. Hope he finds it this season.
Michael J. Reply:

@UglyinLA,
To the uninitiated it may appear that the only thing wrong with Dustin Penner’s performance last season was that he was fat, or lazy, or that he just didn’t care. I hardly think he “just coasted for the last 20 games”. I think it goes a little deeper than his diet, or his work ethic. There was clearly something wrong with Dustin. Kings fan’s shouldn’t give up on him; he is a King.
I would hope that before opening one’s mouth, or typing with one’s keyboard that some thought would go into what is communicated. My friend, you have a lot to learn about life and people.

As for your little argument you put forth, maybe you don’t understand the science regarding Patter of Behavior. Simply put,if a person engages in a certain pattern of behavior in one domain, he will predictably engage in a similar pattern of behavior in another relevantly similar domain. Needless to say, changing one’s behavior is difficult. Dustin can change. It requires desire and commitment.
Finally, you state that there is something wrong with Dustin. What is wrong with him? Can you tell us? Do you know something that nobody else knows?
I suggest you follow your own advice regarding communicating.

Penner has taken full advantage of the King’s excellent condictioning coach during the off season (btw Lewis, Stoll (I think) and Parse have as well).
Many attributed the Kings fast start last year (12 -3) to their off season condictioning. I specifically remember the Kings out working Vancouver in the Canucks opener with the Kings wearing their throw back forum blues. I officially became a huge Kopitar that game. The nasty gash on his face that made him look like the Joker and and winning the game in the shoot out. He manned up big time.

Just what we needed for our bottom six. Add some more grit to go with clifford. I think it rounds out the 3rd and fourth lines without having to put a young kid in there too early in development. Most of our young prospects are two years out anyway. This takes some heat off while raising the competition stakes during training camp. Nice to have a captain/former C on top three lines.

I feel that Moreau signed with our club at a discount. Could the possibility of adding a necessary element (checking, Defense, grit) as well as a possible long postseason run have helped Ethan decide to make himself available at a bargain? I think so.

@Dave, I understand roles and I understand not every player is going to be a scorer, but it’d be nice if he was at least a THREAT to score every once in a while. His decent defense doesn’t make up for his complete lack of an offensive game. Zus at least was a threat on offense (and a good shootout player to boot) as well as being a very good defender.
And the “if he can stay healthy” part seems to be wishful thinking.

Dave Reply:

@puddle, Moreau should be good for 8-10 goals on the 4th line. Zus wasn’t a 4th line player. the goal on the 4th line is to provide energy and a spark and to chip in offensively every once in a while and not give up goals. Moreau should be able to do that very well.

Penner remains an ‘enigma’ untill proven otherwise.
Parse and Gagne have an injury history.
Cliffy is likely to lose a fight or two and sit out a game or two.
Now, we do have centers that can move to wing and whatnot, but it’s always good to stack the odds on the wing a bit as well.
The only downside I see here is Westy getting cemented into that RW4 spot by this move.

Clifford played 70+ as a rookie so he seems set. Stoll is set. Lewis is one of the best penalty killers so he seems safe. Parse is a top-6 type of player on a team that doesn’t have a top-6 slot open.

I like the deal. Losing Zeus, Simmonds and Poni cost the Kings in the size department. Most of the comments I heard last year from opposing players was how tough it was to deal with the Kings because of their size. Moreau fills some of that gap caused by the departure of the three aforementioned players. His leadership and hockey sense will be an immeasurable asset.
Good signing.

@Michael J.,
Even though they lost a few guys in the size department, I think Richards plays big and throws his body really well. Moreau is also a big guy who will take the body a lot more than Poni or Zeus. I think that even though the team has gotten “smaller” it will be a more difficult team to play against. I think Moreau signing will look great come playoff time. We will be able to wear out the opponents. If Penner learns to throw some hits like Richards and Brown, other teams are going to be afraid to play the Kings. I also really think that this was a great move to help the Penalty Killing unit.

@bageldangle, He’s primarily a left wing.
I expect to see this:
Penner-Kopi-Williams
Gagne-Richardson-Brown
Clifford-Stoll-Richardson
Moreau-Lewis-Westgarth
Maybe we have a couple rookies rotate in and out at the bottom six just so they get time with the big boys and for spare parts…
I’m liking this. Those lines look like a serious contender team.

@Bill M., I’m actually liking:
Cliffy – Lewis – Westy
Lewis is just plain fast, Cliffy is awesome on the dump-n-chase then beats the crud out of the defenseman foolish enough to chase him…
… which rbi gs us to Westy.
Oddly enough, the kid can see the ice quite well and makes a real good pass. He can’t skate, hit or pick a fight the right way, but can make a great pass. I believe this is why TM likes him, and I gotta admit he has grown on me like a bad rash.
He sure as heck did surprise in the playoffs last year.

bageldangle Reply:

@Bill M., Saw that, I’m assuming a winger with 15+ years experience would be comfortable on either side and he could be a good addition to that line. I don’t like him on the fourth line too much, not if Westgarth is playing there also. Lewis could thrive with a guy like Parse or Kozun playing with him, if we throw the big boys with him that line would turn into more of a checking line than an energy line. (IMO good lines kind of pivot around the center’s play and strengths, Lewis is an energy guy.) Also we still have Fraser, who might not be healthy for the start of the season, but I heard a lot of analysts saying the kings would keep him and see how things turn out. That being said I feel Moreau might take Westgarth’s place.
@Token, I see what you’re saying, but I feel like Cliffy deserves more ice than the 4th line. He worked and he earned it, I’d be very surprised to see him on the 4th line. Westy, well, he can make a pass as we saw in the playoffs, but on the 4th line how much ice time does he get to create a chance? Like you said he can’t skate or hit, and he’s not gonna get the ice time he needs to create a good chance. He’s grown on a lot of people, myself included, but I’m not going to over value him just yet. To me he’s still just a set of hired hands. Also like I said above I feel Moreau might take Westgarths spot. We’ll have to wait and see. Im feeling this though,
Penner-Kopitar-Williams
Gagne-Richards-Brown
Clifford-Stoll-Moreau/Richardson
Parse/Moreau-Lewis-Richardson/Kozun HS:Westgarth
Gotta love the depth and options, Loktionov will probably get a good look, as will Fraser.

How in Hates would you know what was going on down on the ice for that face off exchange with Willie O’Ree? It almost warrants no response, except that those type of huge baseless leaps need to be squelched completely. I doubt you know anything about Moreau, the Oilers or anything or anyone else involved in that scenario. In fact I know you don’t, so how can you make a fool’s leap like that? Put it away, you are out of line completely! You don’t like his play, his style of game, Fine! But stay out stuff you know nothing about on the personal side! He’s probably penciled in for 4th line in the games the Kings don’t feel they need Westgarth in the lineup. Though not all prototypical 4th liners, Moreau-Lewis-Parse would likely generate a lot of opportunistic counter scoring chances per TOI in that role.

I can’t believe that most of the single game tickets are going fast. Want is an out of towner to do. Would there be any other out of towners that would like to share a 10 game pack. We out of towners need to stick together. I can only make up to 3 games a year, but it’s going to be hard to buy tickets during the season, last year it was fairly easy. This year may be a big struggle. If anyone is interested in combining our efforts, post back here. Let me know. I can totally understand why folks in LA are getting excited about this season. We are flat out ready to make some noise in the NHL. Although I do believe we will start out slow, but once we find our chimerstry all will be well.

After looking thru 250-some posts, it is hard to determine if this is a hockey site? Wine tasting, boilermakers, Vegas bars, sudsy beverages and all those vying for “FIRST”, it makes one wonder about the collective hockey mentality. I thought the subject was the Ethan Moreau signing? How novel is that? Who got the scoop first, who blogged here first, heavenly send offs to Handzus & Smyth, woa what an education. To those who are here for hockey talk, I am pleased to read your takes. For me this Moreau signing signifies a move toward serious contention. LAKs have had among the worst 4th lines in hockey since the Gretzky days. The 4th line has been used as format for try outs and auditions for so many miscast players who would not and do not ever fit at 4th line. I could name dozens here. Cups are won with Defense first, then with solid offensive pressure resulting from the defensive focus second. Not that you do not need exceptional offensive finishing ability, because you absolutely do. However it has to come from the defensive side of the game primarily. Starts with GT to D-men and on to forwards in defensive system to create scoring ops. These current LAKs have done very well with development of GTs, D-men and some dam good core forwards in the top 6 to now top 9, but have failed since 1967 to develop a solid 4th line presence with few exceptions. How many Cups reside in LA? Shame that no attention has been paid to the 4th line until just recently…I can now see the serious movement towards a Cup Contender status with this signing in unison with the foregoing recent signings. Perhaps the culture is finally in the final stages of changing here? I think so and a tip of the Kings Cap to DL, Hexie and Company…honorable mention to Tim Liewecke for driving this movement! Great work so far! Trying to stay on point here folks! Like me or don’t, I had to say it!
[Reply]
Where does this stuff come from with Parsie on a 4th line? That is absolutely stupid! Why waste the signing of Moreau by putting him with Parse on a ridiculous 4th line combo! Freakin assinine! Parse is one of two things and only one of those!…He is a top 9 forward or He is NOT an NHL Player! Sending him to 4th line is both a ridiculous punishment to him and above all to his TEAM! I know TM is NOT planning Parse on a 4th line here. This kid Parse has too much offensive upside, a goal scorer’s shot, and is a fine offensive skater with puck senses to be wasted on a 4th line. A day in the dog house is one thing, but to kick the team that way is untenable! Parse is NOT a gritty, hard checking, tough grinder type player. He is not hard to play against physically. These are not his skill sets! He will not excel out of position on a 4th line period. The coach knows it, I know it and you folks need to know it! I am bent at the mere thought of it. It could cost LAKs alot to employ him out of position that way! BTW Westgarth is NO 4th Liner either…he IS just a DF, Designated Fighter who will be played selectively this season. He will take shifts on 3rd and 4th line when he is suited up, but not a regular shift! My Take!
[Reply]
So . . . where is Parse in all this? billanthony, above, seems to believe Parse can play 4th line right wing in place of Westgarth, when Moreau is on the ice.
If TM thinks a game requires someone like Moreau, he’ll probably want Westgarth to play as well. That scenario surely does not apply to ALL opposing teams.
One can further assume that Moreau will play far less than half the games during the season. If the playoffs oblige our behavior to be coarse and rude and not like gentlemen, then, naturally . . .
But all that is a million years away.
I realize Moreau is not what he was. What he still is, however, is a big guy who very publicly takes no $#!* from anyone. Six hundred grand is not an egregiously bad risk to take on such a signing.

I was liking Harrold better as the bench warmer.

On the face this is an insignificant signing, but with time to ponder, I see this as one of DL’s most inportant signings with the Kings. Why, because it is a great fit on so many levels. I wanted him last year, but this year he adds so much value.
He can skate with size. This will keep opponents D man on their toes and give us some banging to be able to soften up the back line by th eend of the game. We lost this with Poni, Zeus, and Simms
he will be able to help us shut down the 3rd period. We have been the best in the league the past two years, but lost Zues and Sims.
He brings a perfect Phase ‘C’ player for the yhounger ones to follow, especially up front. Lost with Smyth and Zues
He is well respected among the referees. If Brown is not on the ice, he can make a quick comment that will be listened to.
His experience in the playoffs will be invaluable after losing Smyth.
His cost will have no affect on cap.
DL is firing on all cylinders. Get DD signed by December and we have a shot this season.

@jet, Great post. You’re right, DL has really picked up his game this year in getting serious about the Kings winning NOW. Rest of the league still doesn’t take the Kings as legit contenders. Was reading a preview on some Canadian site where they previewed each Canadian team by a hand picked blogger from each team’s blog.
The Vancouve fan never even mentioned the Kings as a threat. They think the only teams they have to worry about are San Jose and Detroit. That told me enough as Detroit has a serious defensive problem and will struggle this year imho.

What are you talking about? LA has a hockey team? Who ever heard of such a thing as a great Canadien sport being played in southern California. I mean, just think of it, it is so hot there, how can they have any ice?

@KC23, I am always irked by East-Coast/Canadian bias towards our beloved Kings. I think it’s kind of funny though, that NHL.com touted the Kings to have their best line-up since the Gretzky-era – in which we almost won the cup – and the rest of the league seems oblivious to that fact. I suppose when we start making the playoffs every year and beating their teams they’ll pay attention.

@Real 7, Very NICE! Glad I could help. Last year I sat right next the the King’s bench with one of my daughters. When my wife saw where we sat I got an ear full. Not that I spent so much money (was $90 each, but basically was on the bench with the Kings I was so close), but she wanted to be able to experience those kind of seats. Low and behold within a couple of weeks I got nearly the same seats for me and her. She was one happy camper and even had a chat with Heidi before she did an interview between periods.

@Real 7, The PR seats are pretty cool. Great view, and you can order food from a server, meaning you don’t have to waste time in a concession line. The people who buy them have to commit to them for 3 years minimum, good for all sporting events (Lakers, Clippers, Sparks, and Kings) including playoffs. They cost somewhere near $18k per year per seat. Enjoy the game.

There are LA Kings, Colorado Avalanche and Philly fans, but a diehard hockey fans is loyal to players like Lappy no matter where they play.
I believe Lappy came back to us in a weird, morbid type of hockey reincarnation when Kyle Clifford made the team. I hope KC keeps showing up like he did last season.

@Who Knows?, From what I’ve heard Penner is training hard as hell and has lost 10 to 15 lbs. already, he’ll fit next to Kopitar nicely. Last year was the first time in 4 years Williams played more than 70 games and he showed that he still has a lot of game in him. I’d rather see him on the first line but Brown can easily play the 1st, he nearly has 30 goals this season.
DesertKing Reply:
August 22nd, 2011 at 12:37 pm
@Dominick,
Penner will have a monster season, we will win the Cup, and then Penner will ask for 6 million a year for 5 years (in a perfect world). Then DL will have to make a huge decision – keep Penner or go for another UFA like Parise. If Parise returns to his past form, then I say go for him because his long-term performance has been nothing but positive. Reference Penner, it would be a crap-shoot to see if he manitains what he does positively this year or reverts to his past poor dedication and performance issues.
Stuart Reply:
August 22nd, 2011 at 12:55 pm
@DesertKing, I think Penner has created a career of one-year deals from here on out… Since that seems to be his only motivation factor.
Dominick Reply:
August 22nd, 2011 at 2:59 pm
If penner produces this year you have a gaurentee of great play. Parise you won’t. Penner has got with the program here, and the Kings will continue the program next off season. If Parise returns to past form is a big if. I’d rather take the sure thing. If Penner proves he’s ready to step up and be a leader this season, I say reward him for his efforts. He’ll know the system, and know the guys in the locker room, and went to battle with them for an entire season. Parise will be starting over, and a step backwards.
Whats the point of motivating Penner if we’re going to start over after he jumps through all the hoops. We’re turning him into the player he should be, and that’s exactly what we need. It would be a waist to let him walk after we straitened him out, just to watch him become a stud somewhere else. Parise’s a question mark, but could help as of now. If we develope a better option along the way, then screw Parise.
Morning fellow Fanatics! I read the article on NHL.com about Moreau being picked up on the Kings and there was one comment on it but i think it speaks volumes about Ethan as a player and what the fans of his former teams think about him. figured i would share.

I think KC will be the most improved player on the Kings! KC will get 45pts this year with 17 to 20 goals. Some say he’s a Lappy type player. I think he 50% Lappy and 50% Brown type player. This Kid will be a soled player by the time he’s 23 years old.
I Love the trade for Richards, I think Schenn will win rookie of the year this year.
I always like to see who might win the award before game 1. Last year I said that LA should try to darft the Skinner kid and when he made the team I said he or Hall will win the award.
Its not game one yet, but im going with Schenn for now! Who is your pick for rookie of the year?
[Reply]
Dominick Reply:

@Sammuch, I expect KC to get around 25 to 30 points (and that’s being generous), 8 or 9 fighting majors and 60 to 70 PM’s. that would be an incredible season. Mybe he can get more offensive chances, but playing 3rd and 4rth lines, the scoring is going to be taken up by the first 2 lines, and we need some tough forchecking to hem the other teams top lines in on those lines.
Schenn for rookie of the year.

8-9 fighting majors is way too low for this guy. I’m looking for at least 20, and 150 PIM’s. If he could toss in 15 goals too it would be fantastic.

@Belexes, IDK about 20… he was in 18 last season and he got rocked on at least 2, possibly 3 occasions… if he’s going to be a contributor on the stat sheet, I’d rather see him fight in <10 fights next year.

@crashin’ da net, That’s exactly what I was going for. I would like to see him fight a little less, and spend more time developing into a solid forchecker. I think it’s too early to start expecting 40 point seasons from a roll player on the 4rth line.

I hadn’t been there in 20 years either, and afterwards wished I would have stayed away another 20! EVERYTHING on the menu was deep-fried. As for Moreau, good pick-up depth-wise and hopefully puts Parse on notice to step it up, especially on D-side.

Not sure how excited I am about this signing. I have read a number of postings from other sources which suggest that Moreau is washed up, injury prone and generally a shadow of what he used to be. I am all for a veteran grinder for the bottom 6, but couldn’t we have found someone better?

Personally, I’ll go with “absurd”… this guy’s best years are way behind him. I just think there’s enough leadership on this club that Moreau will be taking an NHL job away from a kid who may be of far greater value on the scoresheet. I’ll reserve judgement on the intangibles, but I think Moreau will just eat minutes that I would rather see Loktionov have… time will tell.

dont have a problem with it; his salary is low enough where a kid can beat him out im camp and take his spot. We can release him or send him down if needed (not sure if waivers apply). If a kid cant beat him (yet) then he ia a solid 4th liner. Its a solid signing. I would rather a kid be there personally but let the kid beat him out
