Rookie camp schedule announced

Some of the details for the Kings’ rookie camp and “tournament” have been announced. The rookie camp, which precedes the main training camp, will be held Sept. 10-13 at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo, with all practices free to the public (practice times to be announced). The Kings’ prospects will also play two games against Phoenix Coyotes prospects in El Segundo, on Wednesday, Sept. 14 (6 p.m.) and Thursday, Sept. 15 (2 p.m.). Ticketing information for those games has not yet been announced. Then, as previously posted, the Kings’ main training camp will start Saturday, Sept. 17.

@tornado12, I hate to say it but Gagne is not going to be able to play a full season. I think if you take our most injury prone payers and slot them in with someone whom you think would fill that spot, that might be a better indicator of who plays with who.

    Penner/Kopi/Williams Brown
    Gagne Parse/Richards/Williams Brown
    Clifford/Stoll/Richardson
    Parse King/Lewis/Lokti Westy

    tornado12 Reply:

@bonvivant1, i really hope you are wrong, but recent history does support your prediction. Maybe we get lucky and he does play a majority of the games, but I was surmising the ideal opening day roster.

    wes Reply:

@bonvivant1, thanks for the realism. some players are ironmen (ie, Brown) some are prone to getting dinged frequently and going down regularly (enter many names here). thanks also for not forgetting Parse as many posters do– if he can stay stay in the former category (iroman) for a change, rather than the latter (frequently dinged), he _could_ be a significant, if presently unsung, contributor. of those who tend to remain standing through seasons, Penner is the obvious question mark_

    KC23 Reply:

@bonvivant1, The one position that will get us into trouble in a hurry is RW. Williams would actually be one of the worst players for the Kings to lose to injury.

    tornado12 Reply:

@wes, I didnt forget SP. in fact, I have aften touted his capabilities and my enthusiasim for him. However, his spot is not set in stone as much as the others I listed are. I am of the strong opinion he makes the opening day roster as our #3LW. You may or may not be aware that his points per ice time stats are quite exceptional, but the sample size is small. so again proving my point he will have to work his tail off to nail it down. additionally, his hip has been an issue as you alluded to and has yet to prove it healthy.
There is no question Penner is on the opening day roster. Now as to his effectiveness, his overall career has been very good and he is proven in this league. I have confidence he will shine with Kopi as his center and he looked to be in excellent shape when last I saw him. Which leads me to another issue. I am a bit concerned about Kopi’s ankle as I have yet to see his play since that horrific injury.

Juat voted on nhl.com that I am mostly looking forward to the Overtime/Shootout changes at the RDO camp…

Then I realized, the Kings probably don’t make the playoffs last year without those shootout wins.

Kopitar/Richards/Doughty/Martinez in overtime should take care of that problem though.

    [Reply]

    bonvivant1 Reply:

@kevin from toronto, Of all the consideration for changing the game I think the changes to the shootout and points has the biggest impact on the Kings point total. As I stated in an earlier post we have to be good enough to finish off teams before games end in regulation. There were too many games last year when we could not finish off teams in reg. Shoot outs and OT are fun but its going to be a zero sum game in the Western Conference. Meaning-the more points we can deny our opponents the better off we will be. This may sound like common sense but when you take into account the formulas the league uses to determine playoff seeding then it is imperative that we win at least 52% of our games in regulation against all Western Conference opponents.

Ok, DD is going to sign today. I feel it in my bones, specifically my left thigh bone. If not, he will probably sign on Monday according to my right ulnar bone. Of course, my lower right femur is saying DD will sign next Wednesday but my skull is indicating sometime around September 2. Too early for my bones to tell me about our winning the Cup this season, but as soon as they come up with 4 or 5 predictions, I will let you know.

    Stuart Reply:

@DesertKing, Arthritis Sobonis, that guy that played basketball for the Portland Trailblazers has been honing his cross-body onetimer and is on a “tryout” contract with the Kings… Don’t know about his slapper though. And Ben is Rudy’s half-brother, but I think he’s from Moose Knuckle (the one where the K isn’t silent)… You’ll be hearing all about them after camp.

    DesertKing Reply:

Moose Knuckle is in Minnesota, right? I thought Ben and Rudy had another brother named Marvin?

    puck73 Reply:

@DesertKing, My favorite Sabonis story was told by Colin Cowherd on espn radio. He said when he was covering the Trailblazers when they played the Lakers in the playoffs, Sabonis came into the locker room after the game, pretty much after playing most of the game against shaq. Now remember, Sabonis is 7″3 300lbs, not a small man ! Anyway, Sabonis took off his shirt getting ready to shower and Colin said there were black and blue welts all over his chest, and he looked like he was ready to cry he was in so much pain ! Ladies and gentleman, thats how strong a man Shaq was even though he shows a very nice demeanor off the court.

@Ashykon, I had a great time in that arena. Of course I didnt wear anything that said Kings on it, but the people we sat next to knew we were Kings fans, but they were fine with it. we mostly just talked about both the kings and the sharks while the Kings won 4-0, it was all good. However, if you wanna yet another perspective, you might wanna ask @Subby how his experience went at the shark tank!

    [Reply]

    Stuart Reply:

@puck73, but I think that was at a playoff games where the stakes were a bit higher. But nonetheless @Subby was in fear for his well being.

    #1KingsfaninVegas Reply:

    @Stuart,

Actually, it was after Christmas break when Puck went to that game. The game where we dominated and after that played Phoenix and Flyers (east) and lost pathetically.

    Stuart Reply:

@#1KingsfaninVegas, yes but when Puck was referencing Subby and the game that he had the not-so-good experience was the playoff game in which he was posting that things were getting ugly for him in a hurry. I think it must have been game 2 or 5 because IIRC we won that night and Subby was getting sweated as he left the building.
