Here’s the schedule and roster for the two-day public portion of the development camp, to be held next Monday and Tuesday at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo. The roster is primarily made up of Kings draft picks from the past two or three seasons, plus a large number of unsigned players who were invited to camp. There is other activity surrounding the camp, but these are the two days to get the best look at players on the ice. I’ll have additional info on some of the invited prospects a bit later.

@John, It appears the two main purposes are to introduce the players to their future teammates and to have teach the players to work on their weak areas. A few years ago the finale was a round robin against the Sharks and yotes prospects. It is more than luck that we were all in the top 10 NHL teams this season.

@Steve S., Not really. If he were a UFA I’d be nervous, but he’s not. He’s probably waiting to see what Weber gets. I have no doubt he’s going to get signed. Even if he gets an offer sheet (HIGHLY unlikely), the Kings have said they’ll almost certainly match. DD isn’t going anywhere, and I can say that with almost 100% certainty.
Difficult negotiations don’t happen overnight.

@puddle, just to throw out a hypothetical situation. Let’s say DD & DL cannot come to terms over salary. DD becomes a holdout and DL trades him. I hope this doesn’t happen but I’m afraid that I don’t share your almost 100% certainty that it can’t happen. I’m disappointed in DD’s demand to be the highest paid King. He’s coming off as immature.

@HeyChief,
Honestly, I think immaturity has been his problem this whole time. Everyone was saying he was out of shape or that the concussion messed with his game, but I really thought the reason he lagged last year was because his early success went straight to his head. I think it showed through some of his quotes during the season… especially about other teams and it’s showing here, too. Hopefully he’ll mature soon… he doesn’t come off as very classy, at least IMO.
Dominick Reply:

@HeyChief,
If you have confimation that DD is demanding to be the highest paid player on the team, then share it with us. Nobody knows what’s going on except for the people involved with the negotiations, and no one’s talking. This is not uncommon for things to take all summer. It happens every year.
There is always the possibility that DD could be traded, but DL is a proffessional who wants DD here, and DD does love LA and wants to be here. While those aren’t gaurentees, they should be taken into consideration. It will get done. If it doesn’t then hopefully we’ll get a good return.

@David R,
I think my nervousness stems from the fact that everyone is talking about trade possibilities… the more I think about it the more I start to question if it really could happen… and the longer it takes the more I’m okay with it. THAT’s why I’m nervous. If you had asked me at the beginning of the offseason whether it was possible that Doughty wouldn’t be a King next season, I probably would have questioned your intelligence and/or sanity, laughed in your face, and walked away. But now… if you were to ask me that same question, I’d probably just shrug my shoulders and cry a little. lol I don’t like feeling this way about someone who’s supposed to be our superstar. Maybe it’s the girl in me, but I wish I could know that he loves us fans as much as we love him. hahaha

@Steve S., gagne was only a 3.5 cap hit so we still have over 10 million to sign drew. theres a reason dean hasnt gone after a bottom six guy. he wants to make sure this player is a king for a long time to come. this contract will probably be a pretty hefty one so im sure both parties want to take their time and make sure its done right. not worried at all, he wont be on any other team than the kings, unless someone can offer more than $10,000,000 for 1 year he wont be going anywhere.

@DlParker, TamBULLini basically told DL to go pound sand because the only thing DL could do is try and void the trade which would put Smyth back on the Kings along with his 6.25mil cap hit … that we now can’t afford. Least that is how I read the situation.
[Reply]
Rich, is this open to the public? I might be able to take Tuesday off and head up north.
As far as the other Doughty topic mentioned above, it’s been reported on other sites that he’s seeking A LOT of money. I think he and his agent are also waiting for Shea Weber’s outcome; they’re comparable stats-wise and I think he’d “set-the-market” more than the other UFA signings. I think Weber is a better all-around defenseman, but a lot of those intangibles (discipline, leadership, commitment) don’t seem to factor heavily into the numbers on the contract. If you ask me, Doughty is a 5 million a year player, but how long of a term can you safely sign him? Two years ago, he was phenomenal, last year was just pretty good.
Thoughts?

Brian Reply:
July 5th, 2011 at 4:57 pm
@jonjon, I’ll agree with you there, but along those same lines, I’d rate Weber as a better player in his own zone. Wouldn’t mind allocating 6M to a player that’s on the ice almost half the game in some instances, but it better be on a proven player. Doughty disappeared during stretches last season, add a concussion, and you’re incurring a lot of risk to a long-term, expensive commitment. And let’s be real – Doughty is no Hamhuis. So, if Doughty is a 6M player, then Weber should be around 6.5.
