The one before that had Duncan Keith winning the trophy, and the year before that I saw Zdeno Chara winning the trophy. @Hadley, @Hadley, Hadley is right. Kopitar and Doughty are the future of the team. Kopitar is making over 6.5 million so the thought with a 4 mil increase of the salary cap, Doughty (who was on the #1 line for Canada) a GOLD MEDAL winner, is worth at least 6 if not upwards to 8.
While CB14 is right Doughty didn’t win the Norris this year, during his concussed season, Doughty is only 21. 1 player in the history of hockey won the Norris at 21 and that’s Orr. Doughty, almost beat Orr’s record last year as one of the finalists. If LA wants to do anything in the near future signing Doughy ought to be #1. He is just as important to LA as Sid is to Pit.
The problem is having to assess a 21 year old’s value. Honestly he and Stamkos will get about the same. They’re both that high level. Watch TB give 7mil to Stamkos next year. Doughty and Kopitar are at least of the same value. So Doughty should get at least 6.5. 7 or 8 isn’t that bad either especially since a 35 year old Lidstrom got 7.2mil with a lower cap.
Hadley is right, outside of Lidstrom who will retire in a year or two, Doughty is the next best and the future premiere Blueliner for years to come.

@Dave, All of their defense is extremely young. I like Lundqvist a lot but their defense is way too young (Girardi Staal Del Zotto). They just have no veteran presence on the blueline and lack solid firepower. If they are relying on the injury machine known as Marian Gaborik you can forget it. This team is more in a rebuilding mode. If they give up some of their young parts for a few veterans then maybe they have a chance but this team is pretty far from competing from the cup,..

The Rangers have been making deals to big name free agents for years, and only recently have they started to build a solid young core. I see signing Richards as a definite step backwards, and potentially, a move that could make resigning those young players in the future a difficult task. But hey, it’s not my franchise. I don’t think we need him on the Kings either. I would prefer Dean to wait for next year’s UFA class – which includes the likes of Alexander Semin. (I only hope he’s more amiable than Kovalchuk to coming out West.)

@Alexb20, While I am a fan of Alexander Semin because he is one of the most dynamic wingers I’ve seen play the game in years…he is extremely inconsistent. He either scores multiple goals or is invisible, extremely feast or famine…on the Rangers stuff, I feel the same way, but they have a great goaltender but their defense is atleast 3 years away and they don’t have an anchor/veteran on defense at all.

@bfarm, In my opinion, you have it completely backwards. When people use the words “they, them” etc. when also in an organization or a group, it’s a sign of distance.
Nowhere did he state he wanted to remain a King, or anything. By comparing Johnson and himself (well, actually contrasting), he was pretty much saying “I want more money for less years.”
Not saying he won’t sign with us or will, but that article nowhere, in my opinion, leaves optimism.

Matt D’Agostini could become a UFA come tommorow, I think he would be a great fit in LA for the right price. I’m not to high on Gange for more than a one year fix or Leino as he wont even show up till April and even then is a playoff performer worth 4m over a long term? If we do nothing I will be just as happy as long as we don’t lose any of our current roster players. Also, Brad Richards is a heck of a player but not for more than 6.5 over 4 years and I think that will be way less than he gets.

I have a bad feeling about DD… either we will overpay by a mil, mil.5+, or he will be RFA. I don’t really blame him for wanting as much as he can, but it is becoming clearer he is not a JMFJ (all about helping the team).
I have a feeling someone will throw an offer sheet to Doughty tomorrow. Kings will probably overpay a little… hoping the offer sheet is no more than 6 mil or else it’ll be a hard decision to make for Dean, but one he will probably do (and may or may not regret in a few years).

Whenever DD was out, JJ becomes JMFJ and is lights out good.
We also have a gaggle of puck movers in the blue line development fart that are ready now.
Loosing him strategically, bad move down the road when he matures emotionally and becomes a man. Short term tactically, it’s all upside if you gun for the cup next two seasons.

I’m not even sure short term it would sense. JJ needs to step up and play with consistency no matter who he’s on the ice with..same as DD. Both are very young defensemen and we all know it takes time for them to develop and become what their abilities will allow. Nobody in the NHL, at least on Defense has the ability that DD has…forget about the puck movers in our organization..they can’t hold a candle to what DD will bring. Maturity will come soon enough and we will be the benficiaries of that.
The classic example of getting rid of a guy like DD is Larry Murphy..under any circumstances, that will go down as one of the worst trades in NHL history..and only because the Kings weren’t patient enough to allow him to develop..they went for the quick fix. Last I looked, we never got a sniff of the cup with the guys who we brought in for Murphy, yet he went on to win multiple cups with Detroit..and he was a huge reason for it.
my other thought on your post was that in the next couple of years we’ll be cup-ready…winning the cup is as much about luck as it is about anything else. Vancouver had the most talent in the NHL, but Thomas stood on his head and the better team didn’t win the cup. Boston certainly earned and deserved to win the cup, byut they weren’t the most talented team by a long shot.

Im sorry. but the Kings will only go with players who know TM system. So LA flyers here we come, I think its going to be Ville Leino or Simon Gagne on LW. I go with Gagne for 3 years at 15 mil. If we get Leino 3.5 for 5 years 17.5 mil. Then Cole is a great 2 way player that i see can adapt to TM style.
DL has finally realize he can only get players who can adapt quikly to TM!!! He can’t wait 40 games in, until they get it…

If I’m thinking straight, that would be the extent of the ex Flyers players on the Kings roster. If I’m wrong about that, please correct me.
It’s not like the Kings are raiding the roster of the Islanders or some other awful franchise. The Flyers happen to be one of the most successful franchises in the NHL. The Kings certainly haven’t beeen..so what is wrong with being the LA Flyers, as you say?

DL/TM, etc have a penchant for going after guys they know…

Really what we need if we can afford it is a true 1st line LW like Parise. We offer NJ, Johnson, Bernier and prospect or pick and I think thats pretty good bait. but only if he agrees to sign long term with Kings. Then I think this roster is a TRUE contender in the west. I would hate to go this season still missing a piece. We should grab it now if we can. But I think DL
has made his big move and won’t do another big one. he should really go for it this offseason and get every piece he can.
If he were to do that trade then martinez fills johnsons slot and either we rotate in at #6 D the kids from the farm, Muzzin, hickey or pickup a cheap 6th Dman. I think Johnson will eventually be great but his +/- shows hes got a ways to go.
Hate to loose bernie, he may end up being better than Quick but his trade value is high and Ive seen enough from quick and his stats show hes closing in on being a top goalie in the league. We could get a descent veteran goalie to give Quick some rest when needed.

I can’t believe that 18% of fans think that Dean will overpay for Richards, the one forward position that the Kings don’t need to add. Richards doesn’t want to play wing, especially when there are teams that need a number 1 center and have a history of overpaying UFAs.

Coming in to what I just saw on twitter, I didn’t think it was a possibility for the Kings to be in play for B Richards, but now it’s not just rumor-mongers like Ekl@&% that are coming up with it.
Still don’t buy it, though. Gagne would be a risk, but consistent with Lombo’s past moves (Ex-Phily, coming off injury/injury history).

Why wouldn’t B. Richards consider playing on a 3rd line behind Kopi and M. Richards. BR got a first hand experience with concussions last season. What better way to preserve the body for the postseason than avoiding having to carry the team on your shoulders an wearing down with the most minutes played?
If the $$$ and terms are there for him, he should jump at the opportunity to play in a team that can play three 1st class lines. And knowing TM, you know line rotation is a given, so BR does not necessarily have to get stuck in a 3rd line.

What are the chances Edmonton tries to offer sheet Doughty. I’m not sure how much cap room they have left, but their GM has to already know Lombardi is done trading with him, and probably a few other GM’s as well… nothing much to lose, and a lot to gain.

One other thing to consider. This may be the year of the offer sheets. With such a weak UFA crop, and strong RFA group, plus a lot of teams so far under the cap. Also, with the CBA expiring soon, and uncertainty as to what kind of cap we will have in the future, teams GM’s may feel this their last chance to get their teams in order. The first GM to break the ice by submitting an offer sheet to a RFA may start a feeding frenzy.

@LAPD line, but why would DD agree to sign in Edm? Is an extra million or so worth playing for a bottom feeding team that is a few years from making the playoffs? Edm has young talent but given the way the team is run will that talent be groomed properly and given adequate veteran support? Are you willing to bet it will all come together for extra $$? Only DD can answer that question for himself, but I’d like to think that he sees the kings as the better shot to challenge for a cup and win personal awards.
