Kings assistant coach John Stevens talked to Scott Laughlin, on the SiriusXM show “Power Play,” about the trade for Mike Richards. Stevens certainly knows Richards well. He coached Richards on the 2004-05 Philadelphia Phantoms team that won the AHL championship, then spent the next three-plus seasons with Richards as part of the Flyers’ coaching staff. Here’s a link to the interview…
Super stoked about this trade. Sprinkle in a legit LW2 and serviceable RW3 and we are golden! Nice to hear John’s take on Mr. Richards. GKG

He should be our 2nd line left wing that’s what he was slotted for last year

DesertKing Reply:

@Speedy,
Several reasons:
1. Significant injury last year
2. In his late 20′s but only has about 60-70 games of actual NHL experience, and while he seems to have skill, he hasn’t really lit it up when he’s played.
3. Until he proves himself in a 3rd or 4th line role, there should be no expectation that he can handle the 2nd line LW duties.
It would be great if he is able to overcomoe last year’s injury and turn in a great performance this year. He could be very valuable to us in the future once he has a chance to actually play and develop his game some more.

I like TM’s poker face. It’s good that he doesn’t show when he’s getting upset, he just keeps a level head, it’s a good quality in a coach… It also shows how big something is when he does make a big deal about it.. It’s the same with Brown, everyone talks about how he’s quiet, and not a good Captain, but that’s his style of leadership, and it’s pretty effective.. I remember after a game he dropped a few “f bombs” in the press conference, it showed just how upset he was about the game. If I recall correctly this was right after the that 2-0 loss to the Coyotes with the high stick goal, and that was right when the Kings went on the huge point streak to get back into the playoffs.

If Drew wants this team to succeed he will sign a reasonable contract that will both make him rich and allow DL to bring in some scoring talent.

@Anjin,
Drew ‘canadian mercenary’ Doughty and his agent are NOT signing a contract extension with the Kings until they give themselves the luxury of evaluating each and every Offer Sheet presented starting tomorrow, July 1.
Toronto’s Brian Burke is first in line with “Stupid Money” offers. The effing hypocrite is pissy that Dean Lombardi beat him twice to the punch. First at the trade line getting D. Penner, and then M. Richards.
The unspoken intangibles of DD’s disposition are:
1. Negative chemistry build up with teammates.
2. Strained relationship with management.
3. Loss of fan base.
4. Clear message to the rest of the league that DD is a mercenary with skills above anything else.
Burke will max his offer (possible over $8.0 mill) and gamble the future of his own team rebuilding strategy. Lombardi will not bite and will tell Burke “Eat it”. Then Burke will use DD as bait to trade for Stamkos.
Then DL will go after a Ehrhoof via trade or stand pat till Jan 2012 to give the remaining defensemen an opportunity to step up to the plate (Ramirez, Drewiski, Muzzin) before adding more cap hit on defense.
LA will NOT riot, but there will be a well organized downtown public ceremony to burn every #8 jersey with Drew Doughty name on it.

IF this is true about the Predators not getting in there qualfying offers in a timely manner, and a player like Sergei Kostitsyn does become a UFA, I hope DL is all over it..

@Michael_DD8,
I agree about Kostitsyn 100%. This kid is only 24 and had his breakout year last year with 23 goals and 27 assists. However the one thing that really stands out to me is the insane .247 shooting percent. The Kings need a scorer and he would fit nicely in the second line left wing spot and still has plenty of room to grow and improve. I would put him right up there atop my wish list with Gagne and Cole if he does become a UFA.

DLB Reply:
June 30th, 2011 at 5:24 am
@ULVkingsfan, good point, he has some definite skill. Yet it’s really hard for any shooter, even Ilya Kovalchuk, to have back to back seasons with a shooting percentage of more than 15-16%. I would expect that number (and his goal scoring) to fall. Still an interesting option.

And former Philly player had major issues and concerns, and they didn’t leave Philly, Philly left them.

@Who Knows?, Richards had issues with Pronger, one had to go, both are alpha males. Carter and Richards are best buds so there were two sides to the room the Richards camp with Carter by his side and the Pronger camp. Maybe Pronger had more guys, I don’t know, but they couldn’t just trade Richards because they would still have some problems. Pronger is an in your face type guy so it isn’t like Richards can’t get along with people, just not Pronger.

@gcheng, The Philly media take pride it being jerks to the Philly players. Richards just not the type to have any of it. OTOH, anyone with a C on their jersey is supposed to be able to deal with the media. Richards won’t have the captain duties or the high pressure media to deal with here in LA. No doubt he’ll be enjoying that aspect of being a King.
I hope we get to see a few shifts of Clifford – Richards and Brown together (yeah, I know bad line combination in general). Talk about the other team hearing foot steps. Yikes! I would especially like to see that against any line that has Burrows and or the Sedine twins on it.

@gcheng,
It was documented last season that the Philly head coach and Richards did not get along and did not even speak to each other. If the coach and team captain are not speaking (and the one interview I saw said that Richards didn’t know why the coach wouldn’t speak to him) then one of them has to go. I guess Philly figured getting Simmonds and Schenn for Richards was better than getting nothing for the head coach.

It wasn’t like Simmonds was laying wood every night out there. The edge he had in the 2009-2010 season was clearly absent in the 2010-2011 season. He made a couple nifty moves that showed some skill around the net, but it wasn’t enough to warrant him being a full-time top six forward. He’s a grinder, and he didn’t grind all that well last season; therefore, I think the addition of Richards actually gives us a level of sandpaper that we didn’t have before. Increased skill, increased grit… what more could you ask for?

How does a player weigh the competing interests in these situations? DD assumably wants the best contract he can get, but that contract may restrict the team from making further moves that improve the team. Where is the balance, or is there even one that a player ocnsiders? Or is it case by case, depending on the selflessness of the player and the individual dynamics?

hold onto your purses, ladies, the Smyth deal may be unwound, which would really constrain our UFA options.

I can’t believe Deano would void the deal solely because he can’t buyout Fraser. What would be the point of that, an extra few hundred k of cap space? We’re not against the number of contracts limit, are we?

@Kenny44,
Does a buy-out count against our number of contracts?

@Kenny44, I thought I read that the Kings were going to allow Fraser to compete for a spot. Doesn’t that make the health problem issue moot?

@SafariChecker, Not if it’s a long term injury.
Tambellini is a greasy slimeball. Also, wouldn’t be surprised if DL unwinds it solely out of principle.

@SafariChecker,
“helenenothelen Helene Elliott

Colin Fraser, player Kings acquiired in Ryan Smyth deal, has unhealed fracture/cyst and will need surgery 4 months projection. Kings angry”
Being out 4+ months from today makes it a bit hard for him to compete for a spot.

@Gary Livingston, Tambo is officially a scumbag. Unwind the whole deal, the oil faithful will be upset that their “hero” got snaked away at the last minute, make Tambo up the pick to a 2nd and send in a scrub who’s been checked out by Gregory House and his team.

@Kenny44,
It is obvious Tambellini did not act in good faith in trying to dump unhealthy salary on Lombardi.
VOID THE DEAL, DEAN!!!
Ryan Smyth should be furious at Tambellini for using his request to return as an excuse to dump lame horses. First Brule, now Frazier.
Ryan, you’ve been a class act your entire career. Are you sure you want to work for this scumbucket ?!?!?
Can the league impose sanctions against Tambellini and the oilers for blatant fraudelent activities like this?

@Kenny44, Let me be the first to coin the phrase TamBULLini. What a slimmy POS.

I read on BRich’s twitter that he is on a softball team. I wonder if he wants to throw down in my summer team.

Richards from the Flyers.

@Gustavo,
Dude! your sooooo mixed up here I am actually overwhelmed with where to begin with you. DD’s an honorable guy with talent worthy of what ever DL signs him for, and your self centered projecting doesn’t make it any different, just because you say so. I see you as the “I want a superstar at any cost” type, who then says “Not worth the money” when it comes to our own homegrown talent.
At least try to be reasonable in your expert analysis. Contracts like this can take all summer sometimes. Doesn’t mean the player is greedy, or doesn’t want to be here, or that DL doesn’t know what he’s doing, or is getting bent over.
Your acting as if you’ve never seen a contract being negotiated before, and I have a hard time believing your really this naive.

@Gustavo, You may not like Drew, that is your taste, but Drew has done nothing wrong. He is a RFA and is working on a new deal. Where’s the problem? Get a grip. Let me know when your one man riot takes place, I will try to be in town to catch it.
