Lombardi talks trade, Doughty, Fraser, etc.

Based on a conversation with Dean Lombardi — full quotes to follow soon — here’s some of the rundown of what happened with the Kings in the last couple days and what could happen in the next few days…

– Without naming names — because, technically, it could be considered tampering if Lombardi says the name Gilbert Brule — the Kings’ initial trade with Edmonton did not go through because the NHL would not have allowed the player (Brule) to be bought out because of health concerns. That was the last-minute snag that ended up killing the trade.

– The Kings intend to keep Colin Fraser and let him compete for a job.

– The Kings are continuing to have contract talks with Drew Doughty’s agent, which Lombardi said progressed in recent days to the point that the sides traded actual contract figures. Lombardi said talks will be continuing.

– Lombardi said the Kings would pursue a player with a “mid-range” salary-cap hit to replace Ryan Smyth.

More on all this to come…

@KingsFanFTW, I think we’re going to trade DD. I’ve been saying this for some time, but I think there is going to be a HUGE disconnect between DD and DL on price.

DL has proven to be ice cold when it comes to over paying and DD is going to want 6.5M plus. I don’t think we should pay a dime over 4.5M. Unless the numbers they “traded” are very close (and terms), Drew may be as shocked as Mike Richards when he is shipped to NJ for Parise.

And to be honest, I’d rather have Parise at this point. Same thing with Schenn for Richards. Sure Schenn could be great, but Richards is great (and young and locked up for a VEERY long time.)

I just don’t feel like paying DD 60M over 10 years is something he’s proven to be a solid bet.

    Garrett Reply:

@KingsFanFTW, No, i dont. I think we are going to make another mid level deal or signing and I dont see us paying DD what some people on this site think he is worth. So, if he is greedy, we make another blockbuster deal! And honestly, i’d trade DD for 40 goal scorer anyway.

    RLane420 Reply:

@Garrett, Dave Taylor is this you. The days of this franchise letting elite players go are long gone. Do you think DL is going to trade DD for another RFA who he doesnt even know if the player has any desire to play here. Sounds great, your logic is sound. Lets trade what will possibly be the best Dman in the NHL, awesome.

    Mason Reply:

@Garrett, There is no way that we trade DD. He isn’t going to ask nor get 6.5 mil per because you have to compare his contract and value to other players. Lidstrom is getting 6.2 mil. Although he is over 40, he still won the Norris. Doughty has no accolades to compare to Lidstrom, so he can’t get more than that.

Also, there is no way you trade DD. Period. End of story. He is going to be one of the best defensemen in the league, and he has already shown what he can do. The fact is, even if the Kings don’t get him signed before July 1st, they will match any offer sheet. While no player is untouchable, there is no return out there that I would want for Doughty unless the last name of the players starts with Ov or Cros.

@KingsFanFTW, I seen a couple times that DL will end up trading anyone that kind of hold out during contract negoications like Michael Cammalleri. I am not surprise to see DL end up trading DD in another blockbuster trade to pick up some high draft picks and a decent top 6. To be honest DD is good but he is not great yet. His work ethic needs to be improve and his turn overs almost even out his offense capabilities. I just hate keep on hearing TM cover up for DD every time he makes a play that cause us a game by saying that this is the player he is and there will be risk involve.

@Garrett, So you are willing to give up a player that has been compared to Bobby Orr and Nick Lindstrom? He is young, but look at what he is capable of already. Did you see him in the Olympics?? He started on the last D pair and then moved himself up to the top pairing for the gold metal game, which he won! Just think what he will do in a year or two! DD is staying and if you would trade him then you obviously want 8 more years of no post season. He didn’t get picked number two by mistake, so don’t hold your breath if you’re looking for a trade.

    Muelch Reply:

@Garrett, We need Doughty, no question.

He just went through a rough season this year, mostly due to his fatness (which was caused by his now exroommate, simmonds, who reportedly was the cook in the household) and was still one of the league’s best.

I agree that it would be obnoxious to have to lay out some 7 million dollar a year contract for anybody, especially when you look at players like Campbell whom Chicago was desperate to get rid of for years.

That said, he’s Doughty’s of the top offensive defensemen, and one of the top defensive defenseman. He’s a monster skater, a tough body, and skilled shooter. He does absolutely everything you could want in a defenseman, and he’s still a child. Last year he was on the Canadian Olympic team. Considering more than half of the league is Canadian, it is pretty impressive to be considered one of top 6 Dmen from Canada. As if that isn’t proof of his high value, he was nominated for a Norris last year, and he’s barely in his 20′s. There is not a single defenseman in the league I would rather have.

If Doughty wants 7 million a year, we’d probably have to pay him that. But if some other team comes to pick up his contract, because it would be over 6.5 mil, that team would have to give us 4 first round draft picks.

I don’t like big contracts, but if you want good players, you have to pay them.

    John Reply:

    @CB14,

That’d be like signing Adrian Peterson & playing him at wide receiver.

    CB14 Reply:

@John, Did Adrian Peterson play wide reciever at Oklahoma? No, well then that analogy is useless. Brad Richards played Left Wing alongside Lecavalier in Tampa Bay. So it would be like playing Antonio Gates at wide reciever. He’s a natural tight end, but part of his duties as tight end include pass catching, just like Brad Richards. By playing wr you are taking blocking responsibilities away from Gates, just like you are taking faceoff and defensive responsibilities away from Richards. They are both still doing what they do best. Gates is still catching the ball, and Richards is still scoring goals and making great assists.

    Telos Reply:

@Dillix, Oh please, there is no reason to put the team in cap hell and risk losing players over an all or nothing Chicago style run for the cup. Replace Smyth with a decent winger and move on. The free agent class in the upcoming couple of years is quite substantial and there are much better players than Richards floating about.

    [Reply]

    kingshockeyguy Reply:

@Telos, Agree.. People on here just see a name and think we have to have him. They don’t even understand where he will fit and what it can do to the club long term. Then they make comments like, well he can play left wing, or right wing, ect…

I just wish these people would do a little research and see that Richards said he is not wanting to play wing, he is a center and wants to play center.

Hopefully the Kings go after Cole to take Smyth’s spot and I would like Joel Ward to be picked up to fill Simmonds spot as well.

@Telos, I don’t understand why everyone thinks we would be in cap hell. Yes we would be close to the cap this upcoming season if we sign Brad Richards, but after this year we have PLENTY of cap room opening up. Penner, Stoll , and Mitchell are all free agents, and make a combined 11.5 million dollars. None of those guys are going to command significant raises. Plus we have guys that can take their spots if they cost too much money to return. Kitsyn, lokti, and voynov would all be NHL ready. As would King, toffoli, and Muzzin. Or Cliche, vey, and Hickey. We have enough depth that we could afford to let those 3 guys go and replace them from within. All while saving about 9 million dollars.

@lafan13, Brooks Laich is the perfect fit on our team. He plays left wing and is one of those all round players who consistently gets 20 goals, 30 assists, and 100 hits, plays defense, plays short handed and powerplay. Also, I think you’re right about that midlevel 3-4 million dollar contract

We need size on the lower lines, figure we’re losing ‘zus, simmonds, and Ponikarovsky. I may be alone on this but I wouldn’t mind seeing Handzus or Poni come back instead of trying to replace Simmonds with a 4th line powerfoward.

I’d feel comfortable putting Richardson and Clifford around Stoll on the Checking line, and bringing Handzus back to play between Lewis and Parse on the Defense line. If we put Erik Cole with Richardson and Clifford, and Stoll with Lewis and Parse. We could easily run the risk of having no size on our lower lines.

    Smyth vs Brule vs Fraser

Maybe I’m in the minority but how is this such a great deal for us? I understand that RS had a big cap hit this season, but getting a 7th round pick, rather than a 4th or 5th as initially indicated, isn’t so good. Remember also that RS would have scored goals for us next year, whereas Fraser only scored 3 goals in 67 games, and may not even make the roster. So we have basically traded Smyth’s goals for Richard’s goals presumably.

The only way this makes sense to me is purely for cap space purposes, if we need that room to sign DD.

    [Reply]

    Michael_DD8 Reply:

    @ForumFan,

People are missing the point here. If DL had it his way, RS would be a king for one more season. He didnt plan on Smyth requesting to leave because of “Family issues”. There was one team RS wanted to go to ( Trade clause ), and if we didnt make it work, we were gonna have a unhappy player. It really tied DL down, but atleast he got rid of him, with not much return(cap wise) to replace RS with some young power..

    [Reply]

    KC23 Reply:

@Michael_DD8, The point had a lot more to do with unloading Smyth’s 6 plus million cap hit and adding more speed to the team. DL wasn’t tied down one bit. He did exactly what the team needed, the fact it worked out for Smyth was what made it work because of his no trade clause. DL wasn’t a victum by any standards. We came out ahead, but it won’t be seen until we land the LW’er to replace Smyth.

@ForumFan, the only reason this deal went through is the salary cap. a draft pick would delay the LW deal for at least another year while we waited for another prospect to be ready from MAN. If we would’ve accepted anyone significant, they would’ve come with a much higher salary.

    KingsFanInPortland Reply:

@Dom, The +- of Gagne is misleading, look at pretty much every other year he has played. He is a career +131. Saying he was -12 is why you don’t like him is misleading. Sure, he is 31. He is injury prone. If, and a big if, we did sign him, Richards and Brown will make sure no one messes too much with him, because both of those guys will pop anyone who does.

The injury risk is there, sure, but if he is allowed to be a more offensive player, and not rely too much on banging (which assumes TM will open the system up a bit), I think he is a good risk if he signs a 3 year contract.

Other guys have upside and potential, but none really match Gagne’s production. Problem being he probably doesn’t want to play out west, never has, and has pretty much stated as much. But with the continually improving Kings, with the chance to play with old “buddy” Richards, and with our coaching staff very familiar with him, if we are the only, or one of the only top tier teams who offer him a decent contract, he may just change his mind.

Not sure about his character, but he was the team captain in Atlanta, so that has to count for something. And he’s won the cup twice. Once with Carolina, and once with Chicago. The Kings are a great team, But a very “mid-range” great team. Lombardi will offer Doughty a nice “mid-range” deal. Look for a “mid-range” free agent. The Kings will have another “mid-range” season and end up somewhere in the “mid-range” of the standings. And likely produce a “mid-range” effort in the playoffs.

Sign DD. When you’re in a contract year an you don’t have a great year you can’t demand the big bucks. Wasn’t it doughtys dream as a kid to play for the kings? 4-5m long term deal. Sign gagne or Cole. Which ever makes the most sense.
