It’s down to two teams in the NHL, and a long wait will come to an end for one fan base. The Vancouver Canucks, who joined the league in 1970, have never won the Stanley Cup. The Boston Bruins have won it five times, but not since 1972. It all starts tonight in Vancouver. Who will bring home the Cup?

@lafan13,
Out of all the possible match ups, I liked this one the best. I wanted to see Vancouver play a team like Boston, or Philly, who will challenge them against the boards with good puck management dot to boards, but still be able to attack through the middle with posession play between the dots.
I think Boston can skate with them, but won’t be able to do it for the whole game. At some point their going to have to slow Vancouver down. Vancouver can play it anyway you want to play it, but will force a posession game when ever the opportunity arises. So I think we’ll see extremes of both styles taking place for Boston. It will be a good one for sure.
Go Boston!

Didn’t say Vancouver was better, just that Boston will have to slow them down at some point. Vancouver will get the better oportunities though because of the style they play. Boston is capable of slowing them down, and generating offense, which was my point.

I utterly despise Vancouver (even more than SJ). I think they’re highly overrated.
1st round, up 3-0 on Chicago and they let it go to 7 games
2nd round, they played a team with barely any offense
3rd round, they played another overrated team that consistently falls apart in the playoffs, and that we should have beaten in the 1st round
Boston, on the other hand:
Boston played a very talented Canadiens team and had to go 7 games
2nd round they swept Philly easily, some will say that Philly was hurt by injuries, either way they’re still a great team.
3rd round they had their hands full with a high powered TB teams and went 7 games

@Newf, Dude you can rationalize all you want, but the Canucks are the best team in the league and they are going to work the Bruins BAD! If the “Bs” win two games I will be very supprised.
It will go like this:
game 1–vancouver
game 2–vancouver
game 3–maybe boston win
game 4–vancouver
game 5 close them out at home.
Canucks just have too much talent and grit to have boston beat them.
Not that I like the canucks, but what is obvious must be stated.
That top line is just uncontainable. When the Canucks need a goal, they send out the wine twins and a goal is in the net! The short sweet passes that those two guys make are just a work of art!
I hate watching them against our Kings, but they really are the best passing line in the league.
They will dominate Bruin defense as they have all the other ones.

I hate to say it because it’s kind of dissin’ Boston’s Offense, but I think this series comes down to which of these two: Vancouver’s Offense & Boston’s Defense, plays better.
Luongo is hot & cold. He has a TON more pressure on him than Thomas here to win. If his offense plays well, pressure subsides and Luongo will play better because of it. Therefore Vancouver’s offense (I think) controls their destiny here.
Thomas plays intense and possessed no matter what the expectations are. He tends to fail when his defense jacks up and misses their coverages. Boston’s O can score enough, but the D- corps is the linchpin to win it all for the B’s. If the D- kicks butt, the ‘Nucks are gonna be a SERIOUSLY frustratd bunch.
This really is a great match-up IMHO because of this. I think Chara becomes a monster in this series, puts the team on his back (..and a few Canucks on their’s) and wills his team to win in 6 in Beantown.

@Cynic, 5 on 5 Boston has the #1 offense in the league, Vancouver is 7th. Boston’s PP drags them down to 5th overall in scoring. If Boston stays out of the box Vancouver is the team with the weaker offense.

Cynic Reply:
June 1st, 2011 at 7:58 pm
@Osaka, I only disagree that Boston has the better offense because if you’re looking at overall league stats, you’re talking about a #1 offense in stats that accumulated them against an overall weaker Eastern conference. This is where stats are not always right or true. Vancouver played (overall) much tougher and (IMHO) FASTER teams in the West than Boston did over the course of the season.
If the stats were gained on a level playing field, I’d agree with you. Vancouver’s offense is faster and more talented than Boston I believe, which is why I still think it’s up to Boston’s Defense to shut Vancouver down moreso than their offense controlling play.
It all comes down to opinions, this one is just mine.

Osaka Reply:

@Cynic, Oh I agree, Vancouver is more explosive. Boston has more depth at scoring. I was just pointing out a stat. I’m partial to the West myself but Phil, Pit, Wash, Bos, TB all with over 100 pts and only Det, Van, and SJ with 100 in the West. Vancouver also plays in a division with Edm and Col, the only 2 teams with less than 70 points. By far the weakest divison in hockey.
I herd they aren’t going to give the Cup to the team who wins at the end of the sseries, rather they are going to have a famous actor or actress come out after each game and give an oscar for the three acting stars of each game,, followed at the conclusion of the series will be a life time achievment award for most outstanding dedication to the dramatic arts durring a hockey playoff series, of coarse the Nux are the even money favorites to win all catagories. @number 6, Oh darn I posted all that before I read your reply,,,sorry for the rant…I need Kings hockey!
Anyone else find that the Bruins were a bit of a mirror of the Kings? Great d, great goaltending, and zero powerplay. But it’s OK. Good for the Kings to see, cause it shows how difficult it is to win in the finals with extraordinary goaltending, almost otherworldly, super d, and a total inability to put the puck in the net.

@number 6,
Ha ha. Boston did have their chances, but their power play sucks. I thought when they tried to attack with 5 men together they had Vancouver back on their heels. Can’t contain them forever though, and Vancouver found ways to break through with speed, catching them on some counter attacks, in on Thomas alone.

@Dominick,
Dom, what’s that you say? Speed. Who needs…….. alright alright alright.
I’ve gotta calm down. Cause unless some funny things happen a few of the Kings (Smitty, Zus) may be a step slower next year, and Greene is already sufficiently slow.
Dominick, why don’t you just say to me ‘alright 6, we’re fed up hearing you talk about team speed! We know it already’! By the way, does the exclamation point go outside or inside the quotation mark? Maybe Rich can answer that.

@number 6, I was on that rant the other day, Dean is building the Kings into this type of team. Although Boston does not have an inability to score, their offense was 5th in the league! Hey the game was 1-0, not like Vancouver was lighting it up.

@Osaka,
You’re right, but it just felt to me like the chances that Vancouver was getting, eventually one would go in cause they were higher quality chances by far than the B’s. That’s why I said above that the B’s reminded me of the Kings as they were taking shots from, not necessarily the perimeter, but off on the wings in any case.

@number 6, Vancouver is more explosive for sure. I think Boston might have more depth but Vancouver has more speed and more high end skill.

@Osaka, 5th in the league -but remember they racked up that stat in the weak eastern conf.

@jess, I think the East is a little stronger. 5 teams in the east had over 100 pts and only 3 in the west. Vancouver plays in the weakest division by far with Edm and Col.

@Osaka,
and by the way, I can’t truly agree with you At This Point In Time, that DL is building the Kings into this type of team. There are still very big issues around speed and skill. I’m not ready to consecrate Schenn, Loktionov or Toffoli the second coming until they show they are. AND from what I hear, Toffoli’s weak point is his skating.
While watching the game tonight – was just a normal breakout play for Vancouver, and I thought, my God, every guy on that team can skate!! That certainly isn’t how I feel when I watch the Kings. Not that they are super slow, but they certainly don’t compare in any way to Vancouver, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Detroit or San Jose. And you’ll notice that if the Nucks win, that would make three of those five teams to win the last three cups.

@number 6, and it really showed with guys like Hansen, who by they way killed us with his speed last year….the only thing is you have to have skill with the speed…like Hansen does,,,we need that or simalr

@number 6, No, I mean he is building them like Boston, not Vancouver.
Dominick Reply:

@number 6,
I think the issue isn’t as much about getting more players with speed as playing a style that is more up tempo. The Kings force everything to the boards. It’s good defensively, but offensively it slows the game down to a snails pace. Cylcling along the boards so much without plays down the middle is killing the speed of the game just as much (if not more) as the lack of a few more speedy players. Even Boston has a few players that aren’t fleet of foot.
The NHL has made a conscious effort to speed the entire game up with new rules, and the Kings have defiently went against the grain by trying to porposely slow the game down.

@number 6, Luc’s was too, and he turned out alright. But that was 20 years ago when you could hold on to guys for ten seconds and every offensive system was the dump and chase, so mabye that’s not a good thing.
Wait, that last sentence seems eerily familiar to me, where have I heard it before? Now I remember. So actually Toffoli might play well in TM’s system. LOL

@number 6, Also interesting that Vancouver can’t handle the cycle down low (just like last year against us). Unfortunately no one is making plays towards the net.

@Token,
Yep. But sometimes it’s just matchups. We’ve also beaten the Caps several straight. But who has a more skilled team?
[Reply]
Was really expecting OT…19 seconds left
and Torres the Freight train puts it in..
Hated the way the game ended….
Burrows is a vampire and Henrika was ridiculous
on that fall, 5 seconds after the push…
Too many penalties called took flow of game away..
Last game NO penalties ….this game very few minutes…
That’s what you call inconsistency..

Vancouver in 5 if the B’s are lucky enough to get a victory. The Canucks are just too strong.

Canucks, unfortunatly. Those pathetic divers are a disgrace to the game, but the Bruins wont beat them… D:

Kessler goes cannibal and no suspension, nhl needs to be overhauled, stoll gets 1 game for hard hit. the ducks ryan gets 2 for stepping on a leg inadvertently and kessler bite and draws blood..nothing what a joke. NHL should take a closer look at how this league is run if they want to be more successful. If this was anyone other than a canuck 2 – 3 games for sure.

Bruins all the way, not just because I am from Massachusetts but because of how dirty Canucks play. One prime example is the bite on bergeron by burrows. Oh and when Burrows made it seem like Lucic tripped him when he threw himself on the groun.d One player tried to hit Thomas’s stick out. The hit on Horton.& to top it all off, luongo running his mouth… he got cocky after one good game. The Canucks are dirty players, TAKE THE CUP HOME BRUINS!!!!
