Canada, Bernier beaten in World Championships

There won’t be any medals for the Kings at the IIHF World Championships, as Jonathan Bernier and Canada lost 2-1 to Russia in a quarterfinal game today in Slovakia. Canada took a 1-0 lead 5:32 into the second period and Bernier helped hold it until Russia scored a shorthanded goal 9:07 into the third period. Then, less than three minutes later, Ilya Kovalchuk scored to give Russia a 2-1 lead, and that’s how it ended. Bernier made 18 saves but Russia’s Konstantin Barulin, a former St. Louis Blues draft pick now playing in the KHL, made 36 saves. That sets up semifinal games featuring the Czech Republic vs. Sweden and Finland vs. Russia.
