Monday will be the fifth and final day of the “qualification round” of the IIHF World Championships in Slovakia, after which eight teams will be slotted for the quarterfinals. The United States (with Jack Johnson) and Canada (with Jonathan Bernier) have already advanced to the quarterfinals, while host Slovakia (with Michal Handzus) will not qualify, no matter how it does Monday against Denmark. The quarterfinals will be played Wednesday and Thursday, with the semifinals on Friday and the gold- and bronze-medal games next Sunday.
The Kings’ players were in action this weekend. On Saturday, the United States beat France 3-2, and Johnson (who served as alternate captain) did not record a point but played a game-high 24 minutes, 52 seconds. Also on Saturday, Canada beat Norway 3-2, as Bernier made his first appearance of the tournament and stopped 25 of 27 shots. Finally, on Saturday, Slovakia lost to Finland 2-1. Handzus had one assist.
In Monday’s final round-robin games, the United States plays Switzerland, Canada plays Sweden and Slovakia plays Denmark.
