World Championships update

The IIHF World Championships in Slovakia moved to the qualification round today, and Canada beat the United States 4-3 in a shootout. Jack Johnson scored a second-period goal and played a team-high 28 minutes but was stopped by Canada goalie James Reimer in the shootout. Jonathan Bernier did not play for Canada. The United States plays France tomorrow, and Canada plays Norway.

This afternoon, the Czech Republic beat Slovakia 3-2. Michal Handzus did not record a point for Slovakia. Slovakia did, however, have an “all-former-Kings” goal, as Ladislav Nagy scored on assists from Lubomir Visnovsky and Jozef Stumpel.

    Officials are Canadian, and the ones that aren’t live in Toronto, and are married to hot Canadian woman. Canada was well prepared. LOL

    Man I wish I had been there for the Slovakia vs Czech rep. game. They haate each other and it was in Slovakia. Would have been crazy atmosphere.

    Still don’t get why Reimer is playing over Bernier… Canada should start grooming Bernie now for the 2018 olympics

    @VanKingsFan,

    Maybe the Kings fans are overly homer of their backup goalie and the coaches of the team have seen something that puts Reimer above him?

    VanKingsFan Reply:

    @Dan H., Oh for sure, Reimer played good this year for a terrible Toronto team. But I think Bernier’s upside is way higher than Reimer’s.

    I caught the end of that game this morning — if I were Canada, I’d give Bernier a shot. Reimer had something like a .840 SV%.

    Speaking of Slovakia, reminds me of the World Juniors a few months ago. Did anybody watch Slovakia’s junior team play? They have a player named Richard Panik, who is a Tampa Bay prospect, that is pretty impressive. I would love to see maybe a trade involving some of our prospects for this guy. Incredibly skilled offensive player, with size(6ft 2in). Great skater and stick-handler. Check out a couple of these highlight reel goals he scored playing in the OHL. Pretty amazing…

  8. Bruce says:

    I didn’t see that goal, but odds are it was a drop pass from Stumpel to Visnovsky for the blast from the point with Nagy cashing in the rebound. ;-)

    handzus sucks…reimer is overrated and JJ chokes….whats new?

    I sure hope TM and/or DL saw JJ scoring on Canada on a breakaway. I think we may still have a need for a scoring winger… Hmmm? JJ looked like it was his old highlight reel from college days. Put him on the wing and the -21 will be a distant memory.

    @mask0425x, At this point, I would consider minus 10 an improvement !
