Shoulder surgery for Williams

Kings winger Justin Williams underwent surgery this week to repair his injured right shoulder, which he dislocated late in the regular season. The surgery was performed by Dr. Ronald Kvitne, and a team spokesman said that Williams is expected to be ready for the start of training camp.

    Rich, no worries if you can’t, but if you get a chance and are able to find out what exactly was performed in the surgery, I’d love to know. I just dislocated my shoulder for the 2nd time this past week, and I’m having an MRI done tomorrow to determine whether or not I’m going to have surgery. Just curious what exactly they do. My guess is they tighten up ligaments to make it not so easy for the shoulder to pop out again, because mine popped out this second time on a very weak impact, and that’s not OK for someone who plays as much hockey as I do. Thanks. Or if any of you fellow blog readers know details on this, I just want to know what I could be getting myself into tomorrow!

    @Scot,

    “loose shoulders” — my guess this is loktionov’s issue, but not williams’

    the surgery for this congenital condition, as I understand it, makes the shoulder literally better than new.

    Anjin Reply:

    @quisp, I think Williams should loan his shoulder harness to Loktionov next season just to be safe :)

    Tightens up the shoulder, makes it harder to dislocate…
    How did you hurt your shoulder?

    Good luck with your surgery…
    Remember that the post-op recovery begins immediately when they clear you for exercises!

    @BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy,

    I dug a loose puck out of a scrum, and went to skate away with it, and a guy on the ground clenched my foot against his body with his arm and I fell straight forward unexpectedly and landed on my shoulder. Most painful thing I’ve ever experienced, and now it’s happened twice. I’m thinking of electing to go with surgery.

    @Scot,

    So thats why you usually make good sense on your posts… cause you play. Makes a difference doesn’t it?

    Good luck w the shoulder.

    @number 6,

    Thanks, I think the people who have played, whether it’s blog posting, or color commentary on TV, will have the wiser things to say because they’ve experienced what the players are doing. I’ve definitely been off-base with posts from time to time, though, but I appreciate that. I like reading your posts as well.

    @Scot, I dislocated my shoulder years ago, and had surgery. I played through the pain for 6 months before I finally broke down and had the surgery.

    Most likely, he tore something in there. Me, I tore the laburm in my right shoulder. If he is to be back by training camp, I doubt that is what he did (that thing is a minimum 6 month recovery).

    Scot Reply:

    @mrbrett7,

    I’ve heard tearing the labrum is one of the more painful things to do regarding shoulder injuries. Are you still playing, or did you eventually hang ‘em up?

    [Reply]

    loskingpride Reply:

    @Scot, I’ve had 2 shoulder surgeries in the past year and a half, both torn labrums, both same shoulder, just bad luck. It didn’t take getting cleared though to start exercising. As soon as I could grip a tennis ball I started getting strength back. Most important thing to remember is that it’s going to hurt like hell but you can’t let that stop you from doing the exercises.

    Scot Reply:

    @loskingpride,

    PT is so boring and, yes, it hurts. I don’t want to do that again just to have it pop out again sometime. I think surgery is wise since I want to keep playing. I don’t want to be tentative or worried when I fall.

    @Scot,
    I’ve had lower lumbar issues, but never shoulders. Hope everything works out for you, and listen to your therapists.

    [Reply]

    Scot Reply:

    @Dominick,

    Thanks Dom, yes those therapists seem to know what they’re talking about. The first time I walked into my PT’s office, she had me take my shirt off, stand up straight, and apparently my posture was completely off which has been the reason for some lower back issues. Never thought PT for my shoulder would lead to finding out I have bad posture. What is lumbar?

    @TRuskowski, if memory serves, Greene did not realize the extent of his injury until right before the fan cruise last year I believe?

    puck73 Reply:

    @TRuskowski, Matt Greene probably waited a little too long for his surgery, but his work ethic is not to be confused with the last 2 seasons that Shaq wore a Laker uniform. If Shaq had Matt Greene’s work ethic, the Lakers would have won a couple more championships with him, Kobe, and Phil…NO QUESTION !

    [Reply]

    puck73 Reply:

    @spidey35, Exactly ! Remember what Shaq said to the press? “I got my injury on company time, and I’m gonna get my surgery on company time” What an A-hole ! He sounded like a guy making 10 bucks an hour instead of the 28 million a year thay Jerry Buss was paying him. I think the Lakers traded him away at the perfect time…good riddance you selfish ingrate !

    He may get hurt a lot, but it’s never the pulled muscles or wimpy injuries…He gets the tough guy injuries and comes back quicker than just about anyone.
    He was terrific in the playoffs considering the type of games that were played and his injury. He showed no fear whatsoever.
    As my buddy waves said above…He’s a Warrior!

    Nothing could more could ever be asked of a player. The guy is always the answer to the DL haters who point to nothing but the negative. I can only imagine what he would be like with a quality RW (no, I don’t consider Penner to be quality anything) and Kopitar at center. I keep thinking back to that magical start he had with Kopitar and Smyth a couple of years back. Sadly I think Smyth’s years of service has finally caught up with him and we’ll never see that level of play again out of him (at least not for an extended period of time).
