Jack Johnson had one assist as the United States beat Norway 4-2 in preliminary-round action in the IIHF World Championships in Slovakia. Johnson assisted on Craig Smith’s power-play goal, just as he did in the Americans’ tournament opener. The United States, now 2-0. faces Sweden on Wednesday in the final preliminary-round game.
I’ve said it before, and I will say it again…I dont care how he plays in this tournement, he will get the stamp of approval from management and fans alike when he becomes a plus player. So far, his number is minus 15 and at age 24 that just doesnt cut on a team that had the other 5 defensemen all in the plus category. And remember, we are not talking about 23 year old Alec Martinez who just played his 1st full season in the NHL and was a plus 11, we are talking abou the #3 overall pick in the 2005 draft, and we are talking about a guy that has been here 4 full seasons and has more talent then Martinez…THATS WHO WE’RE TALKING ABOUT !

@puck73, Doesnt martinez usually play against other teams 3rd and 4th lines while Johnson plays against their 1st and 2nd. Johnson is still young…he will be better.

@Sebastian, I guess I see it both ways. I agree that Johnson usually faces tougher opposition… but so does Doughty, and he’s a plus. One of the best comparisons is Rob Blake. He was often a minus throughout his career (once -28). Yet he was still considered a great defenseman… always considered a two-way D-man. The stat of +/- is often disconcerting, but it can be misleading as well. For sure, if Johnson improves his +/-, that will be a good thing, but it won’t be the only thing that elevates Johnson to greatness in the eyes of the pundits.

@Sebastian, Willie Mitchell always plays against the best, and even with JJ playing next to him at times still managed to be a plus player although just barely. JJ hockey sense at game speed will have to improve or he will probably get traded in the next 1 to 3 seasons, especially with guys like Muzzin, Hickey, Forbert, Voynov, and Deslauriers all in the system, and all putting up plus numbers in the AHL, and the juniors.

@puck73, but then you have to think about who WM is out there on the ice with? Not just he D pair but also which forward line is out there? Usually the 1st/2nd is my guess, but I really don’t know. just saying.

@puck73,
The +/- can be misleading in that it doesn’t take into account game situations either. His one on one play and being able to contain fast players along the wall is the best on the team. He does have a scoring up side to his game also. JJ’s is the best on the team at being able to adapt from covering speed, to covering physical power forwards. DD is also good at this, but DD wil try to counter it with talent, and if he can will skate out of it. JJ will counter it with talent, or brute force, by skating out of it, or trying to hit and pin.
I wouldn’t mind seeing that +/- go + for a while, but there’s intagables that can’t be quantified by just a +/- stat.

@puck73, One more thought I forgot to mention. The Kings had one of the best PK’s in the league, JJ, and DD Spent more time on it than Zues, and Lewis but no one ever gives them credit.

@puck73, Apparently DL sees things differently from you. Jack Johnson signed a 7 year contract in Jan. which indicates he already has the stamp of approval.

OFF TOPIC ALERT:
Congrats to team USA for squeaking out a win against a powerhouse (tongue firmly in cheek
But this story I heard today is off the charts ridiculous!
The NHL threatened to Sue a local Vancouver car dealership because they had “Go Canucks Go” written on their windows with Canucks logos underneath…. The dealership was Forced to take everything down and or face legal action…. are you serious NHL! Are you serious!!
The dealership responded by painting “Go __nucks Go”
How retarded is the league that this happens… beware your facebook status if you type Go Kings GO, or if you wear a Kings jersey walking down town… the league just might hit you with a lawsuit

In other hockey news, the Duck’s lucked out with the Sucramento Kings deciding to stay in No Cal. The decision ensured that the Duck’s home ice remains in better shape than the poor ice (aka – frozen bumpy water) at Staples. The owenr of the Kings (from No Cal, not So Cal, if that is not confusing enough already) was heard to say that as the owner of any King’s team, it felt good to put one over on the Duck’s fans who were thinking they were going to get their own basketball team. Go Lakers Go! (dang, I miss Kings hockey already)

@Sebastian,
Every little bit would help, plus we would get a better selection of Saturday games. Besides, the Duck’s deserve a partner like the Clippers!

@DesertKing, Honda Center has been ranked as something like the 3rd worst ice in a poll by some players around the league. Staples is 4th worst, but at least we have an excuse, with TWO NBA teams. What does Honda Center have? Disney on Ice and Justin Bieber concerts? If the Sacramento Kings had moved to Anaheim, I guarantee that they would have immediately been more beloved and accepted than the Ducks have ever been by the city of Anaheim. Hopefully they’ll move the Clippers…

USA was down 2-0 after two periods vs Norway. Norway played well, and after beating Sweeden this past weekend, they were looking to go up 2-0 in pool play. But Team USA managed to score early, tie the game and get the winner and insurane goals late. Gritty comeback for Team USA. Johnson looked ok, but was not dominating. Actually, Team USA is made up of much younger college and less-established NHL Players. Still, it’s hockey!
USA! USA! USA!

@LaKingsInsider, Jack is flawless to me…a slice of apple pie…with all the fixiins’ bringing it to the ice! I think he is a great player and is on his way to building his game—no doubt—in the NHL…I expect him to see him soar expeditiously! Looking forward to next season! lots of xoxoxoxoxoxo for Jack : ) !!!!

Jack is a much better d-man than people give credit for, simply because of his plus/minus which is an unreliable stat. His ability to escape pressure, much like Drew, is one of the best in the league. He makes great outlet passes too. Don’t get me wrong, he has his share of Oops! plays that sometimes cost us a goal here and there, but you really watch all the games, a large % of goals that go in when he’s out there have nothing to do with him. In fact, often times he’s playing it right. Sometimes, it’s a missed check by a forward, other times his d-partner gets beat. Sometimes it’s just a fluke goal.
I can’t explain why it happens when he’s out there all the time. Let’s hope the trend changes. But far too often is a goal scored against and the “blame JJ” comments blow up this blog when it had nothing to do with him. Really people? Watch the game. Or maybe try playing a game yourself every now and then. You’ll see it’s not always his fault.
