Defensemen limited scoring chances in Game 2

Yesterday’s lengthy post, and hefty praise, for Drew Doughty shouldn’t take away from the effort given by other Kings defensemen in Game 2. Jack Johnson had a multi-point game, Alec Martinez was solid in nearly 15 minutes of ice time and the lunch-pail trio of Matt Greene, Willie Mitchell and Rob Scuderi did an underrated [...]

Stoll ready to move ahead to Game 3

There’s good news all around in the aftermath of Jarret Stoll’s hit on Ian White in Game 1. White, who missed Game 2, was medically cleared and was scheduled to practice Monday, according to the San Jose Mercury News, and there are apparently no hard feelings between White and Stoll, who served a one-game suspension [...]

Clifford enjoying life in NHL playoffs

If things had broken a bit differently, Kyle Clifford might have just completed his junior-hockey career and might just be starting on a stint in the AHL playoffs. Instead, after making the Kings’ roster coming out of training camp and establishing himself as a lineup regular, Clifford is in the Stanley Cup playoffs at age [...]

Monday practice update

Jarret Stoll will be back in his usual role for Game 3, centering Ryan Smyth and Justin Williams. Stoll said he had reached out to, and communicated with, San Jose’s Ian White after Stoll’s Game 1 hit on White, and Stoll indicated that there are no hard feelings between the players. According to reports, White [...]

Manchester Monarchs playoff update

The playoffs are also underway in the American Hockey League, and the Kings’ affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs, hold a 2-1 series lead over the Binghamton Senators in the best-of-seven first round. The Monarchs pulled out a big win Sunday to take the series lead, as they rallied from a 3-0 first-period deficit to beat the [...]

Doughty’s best efforts coming at best time

Any analysis of Drew Doughty should start with a flashing disclaimer: “Caution, he’s 21 years old.” In general, 21-year-old defensemen aren’t supposed to do anything close to what Doughty does. Doughty averaged 25 minutes, 39 seconds of ice time per game this season, the fifth-highest average in the NHL and more than top defensemen such [...]

In a word, Penner was `better’

In fairness, given that he was a target for criticism after Game 1, Dustin Penner had a better Game 2. In fact, that’s exactly the word used by Terry Murray. Three times, in fact. Penner had two shots on goal and still hasn’t recorded a point in 14 consecutive games, but he appeared to be [...]

With return of Stoll, Kings have options

Who will come out of the Kings’ lineup with the return of Jarret Stoll? Stoll will be a full participant in practice tomorrow and will return for Game 3 after his one-game suspension — “He’s right back in there,” Terry Murray said. “He’s a very important player for us, obviously, in all the special-teams play [...]

Sunday (non-)practice update

As posted earlier, the Kings went through off-ice workouts this afternoon in El Segundo, and they will be back on the ice tomorrow at 10 a.m. So there aren’t many updates to give. It should go without saying that Jarret Stoll will be back in the lineup for Game 3, although the Kings’ strong effort [...]

Postgame notes (April 16)

Some notes from last night’s game… – The Kings evened their best-of-seven first-round series with a 4-0 victory over San Jose in Game 2 on Saturday night at HP Pavilion. – The series is tied 1-1 going into Game 3 on Tuesday night at Staples Center. – The Kings had not won a playoff game [...]

The view from San Jose

In the eight first-round playoff series, three home teams swept the first two games. Vancouver took two from Chicago, Detroit took two from Phoenix and Washington took two from the New York Rangers. Four other series (Kings-San Jose, Anaheim-Nashville, Philadelphia-Buffalo and Pittsburgh-Tampa Bay) resulted in splits while Montreal won two road games against Boston to [...]

Murray postgame quotes

Terry Murray’s postgame thoughts… (on the game…) MURRAY: “It was a very big win, coming into this building in Game 2 when we’re a little short, with key players out of the lineup. That requires a real competitive attitude by everyone that is playing. Guys have to really dig in and play hard for each [...]

Quick postgame quotes

Jonathan Quick’s postgame thoughts… (on the Kings’ attitude going into the game…) QUICK: “It was just a compete attitude. Everyone competed, from the first faceoff right until the last horn. It’s something that we knew we needed to do, coming in. We knew we needed a big effort against this team. We’ve got to build [...]

Doughty postgame quotes

Drew Doughty’s postgame thoughts… (on the power-play success…) DOUGHTY: “We were moving the puck well. We studied the PK and we saw tendencies and we exploited them. We moved the puck quick, found the seams and got the puck to the net. We had great net presence as well. Those are the keys to a [...]

FINAL: Kings 4, Sharks 0

The Kings evened the first-round series 1-1 as they earned a split in San Jose. Drew Doughty had a two-goal, two-assist game, and his four-point effort tied the franchise playoff record for mots points in a game by a defenseman. Doughty had a four-point game last year against Vancouver, and Paul Coffey had a four-point [...]

Kings 4, Sharks 0

Kyle Clifford gave the Kings a 4-0 lead 4:54 into the third period. Brad Richardson carried the puck out from behind the net and sent it through the crease. Clifford, positioned at the far post, got sight of the loose puck before Niemi did and knocked it over the line. Drew Doughty also picked up [...]

End of second: Kings 3-0

A segment of the HP Pavilion fans booed as the final seconds ticked down in the second period. The Sharks outshot the Kings 8-6 in the second period, but the Kings got the period’s only goal.
