FINAL: Sharks 4, Kings 3 (OT)

After the Kings failed to score on their five-minute power play, the Sharks ended the game less than a minute later. On a counter-attack, Devin Setoguchi took the puck behind the Kings’ net and tried to get it to the net. The puck got deflected in front, and Joe Thornton won the battle in front [...]

End of regulation: 3-3

Shots were 34-29 in favor of the Sharks in regulation, and the Kings will be on the power play for the first 1:37 of overtime.

Kings 3, Sharks 3

The Kings tied the game 3-3 with 8:21 remaining in the third period with their second power-play goal of the game. Alec Martinez got the play started when he carried the puck deep into the Sharks’ zone. The puck went back up to Jarret Stoll, who shot from the left point through traffic. Trevor Lewis [...]

Sharks 3, Kings 2

Dany Heatley’s goal, 8:48 into the third period, gave the Sharks a 3-2 lead. The Sharks tried to work the puck into the Kings’ zone, and Kings center Brad Richardson tried to clear it, but Richardson was knocked off the puck. Heatley picked it up, skated to the left circle and beat Quick with a [...]

Kings 2, Sharks 2

The Kings tied the game 18 seconds into the third period. Ryan Smyth dropped a pass for Jarret Stoll, who shot from the right point. Niemi made the save, but Smyth crashed the net and knocked the rebound in from close range to tie the game 2-2.

End of second: Sharks 2-1

Shots in the second period were 13-13, and both teams had two power plays. The Kings scored a power-play goal but the Sharks scored two even-strength goals.

Sharks 2, Kings 1

The Sharks got the lead back with 3:08 remaining in the second period. Joe Pavelski won the puck in the corner of the Kings’ zone, then found Jason Demers, who pinched down into the play. The Kings lost coverage on Demers, who beat Quick with a sharp wrist shot to give the Sharks a 2-1 [...]

Kings 1, Sharks 1

With the Sharks’ Joe Thornton in penalty box on a double-minor high-sticking call, the Kings tied the game with a power-play goal. Jack Johnson shot from the left side and Niemi made the save but the rebound kicked right. Justin Williams skated in and one-timed the rebound into the net from the right circle to [...]

Sharks 1, Kings 0

After the Sharks failed to score on a power play early in the second period, they took the lead with an even-strength goal at the 2:58 mark. Quick scrambled after breaking his stick and the Sharks applied pressure. Joe Thornton centered to Kyle Wellwood, who roofed a shot past Quick and two Kings defenders to [...]

End of first: 0-0

Shots were 16-5 in favor of the Sharks in a scoreless, penalty-free first period. The Kings were being outshot 11-1 when Terry Murray took a timeout with 7:52 remaining in the period. The Sharks have totaled 68 shots in the last four periods.

Scouting the Sharks

A reminder that tonight’s game starts at 7 p.m., not 7:30 p.m. Otherwise, not much has changed for these teams. Including the regular season, this will be the 12th meeting of the season between the Kings and San Jose Sharks. San Jose coach Todd McLellan remained coy this morning as to which players would go [...]

Doughty, Couture talk friendship, series

The childhood friendship between Drew Doughty and Logan Couture has been chronicled throughout this series, and it’s a neat story, of how two kids from Ontario, Cananda, grew up to face each other in an all-California NHL playoff series. Heidi Androl sat down with Doughty and Couture to discuss their friendly rivalry. Also, as an [...]

Better luck in Game 6 this time?

The Kings are hoping not to experience any deja vu tonight. Last year, their first-round playoff series (and season) ended with a Game 6 home loss to Vancouver, although the circumstances of that game were a bit different. The Kings lost a third-period lead in Game 4 at home, then were blown out in Game [...]

Kings try to stay in good shape in circle

After being at 50 percent or below in the first four games, the Kings won the faceoff battle in Game 5, as they won 31 of 56 draws (55 percent). That’s a strong outcome against a San Jose team that ranked second in the league in faceoff percentage in the regular season, and Jarret Stoll [...]

Road mentality needed at home

The lack of home success in this Kings-Sharks series — and throughout the first round of the playoffs, really — has already been well-documented. In this series, the road team has won four consecutive games. Can the Kings break that streak tonight? Nobody really has a cogent explanation as to why the home team can’t [...]

Unexpected return continues for Parse

A bit overlooked in the Game 5 analysis was the return of Kings winger Scott Parse, who played his first game since Nov. 15. Parse, now recovered from hip surgery, moved into a high-profile role alongside Michal Handzus and Justin Williams for Game 5 and is expected to remain there tonight. In Game 5, Parse [...]

Monday skate update

No surprises or changes coming out of this morning’s skate. The Kings are expected to go with the same lines and defensive pairings they used in Game 5. More notes and quotes to come…

Do Kings need a pick-up after 52?

Going back to the 52 shots on goal that the San Jose Sharks recorded in Game 5, that’s a big number, but not one that’s atypical for a Kings-Sharks game and not one that particularly seemed to bother Terry Murray. So far in this series, the Sharks have totaled 45, 34, 36, 27 and 52 [...]

Clarification on franchise playoff records

Nick Nickson, radio voice extraordinaire and unofficial Kings historian, has helped clarify a couple of the franchise playoff records from Game 5. The Kings had announced that Jonathan Quick set a playoff single-game record with 51 saves. That seems to be true, although we’re trying to determine who held the previous record. To the best [...]

Game 6 suite ticket update

What an amazing response there was yesterday to the Game 6 suite offer, as five suites were completely filled in less than 12 hours. That means at least 125 blog readers will be at Staples Center tonight to enjoy the action together. Larry Abel let me know last night that the capacity has been reached [...]
