One assist for Johnson in win

Jack Johnson had one assist as the United States beat Austria 5-1 in its opening game of the IIHF World Championships in Slovakia. Austria narrowed the lead to 2-1 in the second period, but then the Americans scored three consecutive goals. Johnson assisted on Craig Smith’s power-play goal late in the third period, which made it 5-1. The United States next plays Norway on Monday in preliminary-round action.

    @Paul G, He’s putting in fresh bedding and fluffing the pillows for Logan Couture at the summer lake house in Canada where they “train” over the summer. ;)

    @Token, hey Token, you seem to bve knowledgabvle in these areas, but from a previous thread I asked if you knew what happens when a RFA if tendered an offer and the RFA doesnt sign. What happens? arbitration? have to play in another league? any clue?

    Token Reply:

    @tornado12, There is no automatic action. Player is still an RFA and eligible to receive offers. If he doesn’t sign by I think December, he can’t play anywhere that season.

    Both player or team can request arbitration at any time.

    Once arbitration is requested by either side, third party offer sheets cannot be submitted.

    The announcers calling the game were drooling a little bit over JJ. Glad to see someone outside the Kings organization speak so highly of him.

    @Dominick,

    It seems Jet lag didn’t bother him at all. He was awesome in both ends, especially block shots on 5 on 3 and a stretch pass for the PP goal.

    The game was so fast. Those young guys got some serious speed. And JJ was looking good in the fast game.

    @goldielocks, Keep in mind, this is the guy who is so into representing his country that he chartered a jet to fly him to Vancouver after a game so that he could participate in the opening ceremonies for the Olympics.

    I really dont care if JJ scores 10 goals and has 10 assists in this tournement. The bottom line for him is he has been a minus 78 since he has been here. Nobody argues that JJ’s stickhandling, skating, and ability to play the physical game are world class, they are ! That being said, half the game is hockey sense at game speed and he has been a major disapointment since coming here. Take a look at Brian Rafalski, he doesnt have any of th physical tools that JJ has, not even close. But Rafalski’s hockey IQ is so superior to JJ that it is laughable. And dont look now JJ, but everybody at Manchester except Kolomatis was a plus player, and you can also throw in Forbert who was a plus 21, and Deslauriers who was a plus 22. My point is, JJ is not guaranteed anything next season. Like everyone else, if he wants a job here, he will have to earn it. Thats what is so beautiful about depth…COMPETITION !

    @puck73, what scares me a bit here is he just signed that new contract, so does he continue to have that drive to excel and improve? His +/- has to improve!!!

    @tornado12,
    I think the fact that he’s playing in these games shows he wants to get more experience, keep on playing hockey, and improve his game

    @Shakes, good point, didnt think of it that way!

    @puck73, he will do better next season i dont think no one likes to have that minus and be okay with it

    You guys are interesting.

    I would much have rather have Jack Johnson at -23, and the Kings be in the postseason, then have a Jason Holland at +1 and the Kings finish in the blackhole.

    JJ is a beast and he is only going to continue to get better…
