Michal Handzus has officially been added to Slovakia’s roster for the IIHF World Championships, which are underway in Slovakia. Handzus has been a longtime participant for Slovakia in international play, most recently at last year’s Olympics. Without Handzus, Slovakia beat Slovenia 3-1 in its opening game, and Slovakia plays Germany tomorrow.

@Stuart, and it’s wrong! (NH)League over World Championship? Club over Nation… The league should stop for this two weeks and continue after it ends (as it was at the Olympics in Vancouver), period. I’m just tired of hearing the players can’t or won’t play because of it…when will they ever?

@Kingstane9, I’m not sure the Worlds carry the same clout as the Olympics… add to this that you would be asking some teams to shut it down right in the middle of the SC playoffs whereas for the vanc oly’s they just took about 10 days more than the normal all-star break and pushed the pause a little further down the schedule to accomodate.
I don’t even know, is the world’s every four-years too?

@bleedblueking,
The issue will be wether Zues believes that is a fair price. If another team offers 3 or 4 mill (Which is almost a certainty), why would he take a 1.5 to 2 million dollar offer? There are quite a few teams out there who just need a solid consistant veteran down the middle, and a PK upgrade. The Kings would welcome him, but not at 3 or 4 mill. The Kings have the resources to upgrade within.
What ever happens, I still love this guy, but I don’t see it happening. Good luck this summer Zues, wether your here next season or not.

@bleedblueking, I gotta believe 2 mil for 2 yrs gets it done. I don’t think any team in their right mind would pay more than 3 for 1 year at this stage of Zeus’s career, no knock on him, it just is what it is.
I’d love to see Zeus stay for the duration and make a transition to a coach of some sort with the organ-eye-zation. He really has a head for the game and his defense is top notch. He’d be a great asset to the coaching staff.
Any more than 2 mil and I think we’re overpaying. Too many kids to lock up long term to do that.

@Dominick, I went to a bar fight and a hockey game broke out. Curling had all the potential to be bowling, but they decided not to eat while they played a sport. The only thing missing from soccer is actual intensity. Everytime a basketball player scores it makes each basket that less important. Football has too many flags. Hockey players would be better at any sport than its athletes would be at hockey.

LF13 Reply:

@jonsey, with Kopitar Slovenia would win. And if Detroit let Muršak play it would be great. It doesn’t matter if guys are playing in the NHL or not. Slovenian national team is full of youngsters that could be 3rd maybe 2nd round picks but they were never discovered because they were playing in Slovenia. Look at Tičar, Jeglič, Sabolič (for you this is probably like I am saying nothing at all
) they are great line together. Robert Kristan is a great goalie, he was chosen as the best goalie of Swedish Elite League once but he never got a chance to play in the NHL. The problem with Slovenian players is that they are not discovered like Swedish, Finnis, Czech, Slovakian, Russian players. NHL scouts don’t come to Slovenia and so young players from Slovenia must go abroad and try their hardest to get noticed (like Kopitar did) but this is tough for 15 year old guys and so many of them are never noticed by the NHL. It’s probably similar with norwegian players.
Kopitar is a Slovenian (slovenec in slovenian language). There are two Slovenian players in the NHL, and one of them (we all know which one) is better than any Slovakian player in the NHL.

@LF13, so true LF13,, The same can defenitly be said about the Norwegiens as well, those guys keep getting better and better in international play, they where one of the more intertaining teams in the last Olympics and they just beat Sweden in the Worlds. They have some guys that are tops in the Swedish Elite League but not so much in the NHL. I hope our scouts aren’t missing some of the talents that are from lesser known hockey countries simply becuase the mainstream insn’t there.

@Ravens, no disrespect I spelled it wrong it’s Norwegians with an A sorry
LF13 Reply:
May 1st, 2011 at 11:20 am
@Ravens, the problem is that in such countries (also Italy, Hungary, France, and many others) have 1, maybe 2 NHL material players per generation and they are the best players in their country but their achievements are not so appreciated because these leagues are not good enough and scouts want to see how would they do in a tough league. This is why it would be really good to organise a tournament (like they do before the draft with North American players) of best European skaters so that players from smaller hockey countries could be recognized… But now NHL scouts are right now missing some pretty good players. You can see how bad the scouting in Europe was by the rounds in which guys like Datsyuk, Lidstrom, Zetterberg,… It is getting better and I hope that one day guys from countries like Slovenija, Norway, etc. will get recognized as Swedish, Finnish, Russian, etc. players do.

Exactly! The other good thing about depth is when some kid comes along who looks really good, you don’t HAVE TO throw him in the deep end before you know if he can swim yet.
Depth doesn’t happen overnight, and building a team that can compete with the elite teams in the league doesn’t happen overnight either. Having a small amount of patience will pay dividends for decades. The Kings have tried throwing together a winner forever. It hasn’t worked. So far, I’m liking the direction Lombardi is taking us. @Ravens,
Juraj didn’t actually do it. He just asked the president what the hell was taking so long, and Bin Laden died an hour later. Ha ha ha!

@puck73, I think the fact that I learned about Osama’a death from your post means I spend a little too much time on this site.

@Shakes, Weird or not, it’s the best thing to wake up to. I had no idea.
RIP Ace and Mark.

@KFII
Thank you. That really puts thinigs in their proper perspective.
It’s a shame that more Kings are not playing in the World Championships. They’re supposed to be playing hockey at this time of the year, not hanging around at some golf course.

@KC23, Yep, they could definitely be in Vegas, But you think they’re still in Manhattan Beach, or back to Ontario for the summer? I was wondering this the other day.

@KingTrojan, I hope they are in Vegas or off on a tropical vacation. You guys seem to think they should never step away from the game and just relax for a few weeks after their year is over. Let them have some fun and then hit the gym hard and get refocused. A break from the game is always good
but still slovenia almust kick there ass
slovenia rules, but I am sorry that there was no Anže Kopitar
with Kopy we would win
