Monarchs out of AHL playoffs

Want to watch Game 6 in a suite with fellow blog readers? Scroll down a bit for ticket details…

The Manchester Monarchs had their season ended last night, as they lost to the Binghamton Senators 6-5 in overtime in Game 7 of their first-round playoff series. The Monarchs led the series 3-1 but then lost three consecutive overtime games. It was a wild series, in which five of the seven games went to overtime, and Game 7 was wild in itself, as they Monarchs rallied from a 4-0 deficit to take a 5-4 lead in the third period, only to lose the lead with less than two minutes remaining in regulation and lose the game in overtime.

Will some “Black Aces” now be headed to the Kings? That’s the nickname given to players who are called up from the AHL during the playoffs, mostly for depth and to get experience in a playoff atmosphere. It’s unlikely that any of them would play in a game, and given that the teams are already deep into the series, the Kings might just forego the “Aces.”

    Between schenn, moller, loktionov, Richardson, stoll, handzus, Lewis, and kopitar we have a lot of options at center next year

    @KH, Handzus is a UFA, probably wont be back… Lewis and Richardson will be competing with Schenn and Loktionov.. Richardson can play wing, and has also played really well these playoffs, so he’ll probably be seen as more useful.

    Schenn was -5…..ouch. On the bright side….Muzzin was +3.

    @hipcheck,

    Ah yes, perhaps Lombardi knew what he was doing when he sent him to Manchester instead of burning a year off his contract and bringing him to the big club.

    @dMan,

    Yep! And like I’ve said before, I don’t think it had anything to do with the contract status.

    Even if it wouldn’t have burned a year off his ELC, I still think Schenn would have gone to Manchester, and rightfully so.

    @dMan, If it was anything like the previous game, there’s more than enough blame to go around.

    The Kings win took the sting out of this last night but man, this sucks. I know their opponent was solid, but they have to be very disappointed. They were so close to putting them away only to see it slip away.

    On the flip side, I encourage the Sharks to emulate the Monarchs. You can do it San Jose. I have faith in you.

    Aces question: How long do the Kings have before they can no longer call up a player? Is there a deadline?

    @wavesinair,

    Do you think you would survive Kings emulating Binghamton.

    First a game 6 double OT 2-1 win.

    Then, Kings give up another 4-0 lead to SJ only to win in OT.

    I would probably die before the game 7 OT goal.

    @wavesinair,

    this is what i found…the last line sums it up…:

    There is a mandatory roster freeze between December 19 and December 27, where any claims on waivers are nullified. There are also several limitations placed on waivers after the Trade Deadline until the end of the season. Teams are no longer able to loan players to AHL affiliates, unless they were recalled under one of the circumstances described below. Teams cannot recall players except for the following circumstances.

    * Teams are only allowed four recalls of players from the period between the Trade Deadline and the end of the season.
    * A player can be recalled under an Emergency Recalled (explained later)
    * If the AHL’s team season has ended, the team can recall a player.

    @variable,

    Thank you! What I’m wondering is, do all the Monarch players go about their business and head in different directions, i.e. go back home, vacation, etc.? And are they “on call” so-to-speak until the Kings are finished? It would be odd if they all stayed in Manchester doing anything beyond exit interviews, etc. at which point, they would disband. Right?

    @wavesinair, In the past, the guys have hung around for about a week or so afterwards depending on how long they’ve been in town (a short term guy coming from college or juniors would likely have less stuff than someone who have been around for the full season). It also depends on what their residence status in town is, there have been a few players who live in the Manchester area full time, but to my knowledge there aren’t any of those players on the team anymore.

    Schenn has been shipped all around Canada and the States already. They may as well bring him back to LA at this point. Holloway has definitely earned the trip too.

    @Michael_DD8, Absolutely. We’ve owned the road. We struggle at home, don’t know why. Maybe the crowd gets them too hyped or nervous. But tomorrows game is the long shot. We pull this one out, we have all the cards for a game seven.

    I’m not sure why Zatkoff started game 7. Martin Jones played 4 games in the playoffs, was 2W 1L, had a 2.54 GAA and a .921 SV%. Zatkoff played 5 games, was 1W 3L, had a 3.22 GAA and a .891 SV%. Jones had significantly better numbers during the regular season also. It’s not looking like Zatkoff is really panning out. Jones seems to be the real deal, and Berube should be up there soon too.

    PP Anybody? Reply:

    @PP Anybody?, My bad. I didn’t see that Jones actually started the game, and was pulled for Zatkoff who eventually let in the Winning goal against. Still, looks like Jones will be getting the better of the starts next year I’m guessing.
