Justin Williams’ postgame thoughts…
(on the game…)
WILLIAMS: “We were one of the best defensive teams in the league this year. This is totally unacceptable, and we’re letting ourselves down. This is crunch time. A lot of work went into this, to get to the playoffs. We don’t want to let it slide away. Just like last game, we’ve got to pick up our pace. We’re going to San Jose to win, and get this thing back here.”
(on what’s going wrong defensively…)
WILLIAMS: “We seem to be chasing the puck a little bit more. Knowing how good of a team they are offensively, if we’re chasing the puck around, we’re going to be chasing them around. That’s certainly what happened, definitely in the third period. They got that early goal and a couple tap-in goals that were simply unacceptable for us.”
(on the recent defensive slide…)
WILLIAMS: “We just allowed 12 goals at home. We pride ourselves on being a real good defensive team. The math certainly doesn’t add up. On the other hand, it wasn’t the fourth loss. The fourth one is always the hardest, and we’re going to go into San Jose with a great attitude and we’re going to try to do something special.”
its okay Williams just sit out in game 5 u did ur best i dont want u injury any more then u r

I actually heard Murray mention the names of Moller, Drewiski and Harrold in his interview.
OMG!
I’m thinking Penner sits on Saturday.
Poni moves up.
Martinez sits on Saturday.
Drewiski plays.
Harrold or Moller on the 4th line.

@IceGuy,
I feel bad for Alec. He had a really good year and to have this game turn on that bad play…I just feel for the kid. He was rattled after that one and I hope this helps his development rather than hamper it.
Up to that point, the Kings were playing good enough, but after that, the wheels pretty much fell off the cart, even if they were able to score those two goals to get to 3-2.

Good teams DO special things.
This may sound harsh, but it is the mentality that this Kings team MUST shed. Now I’m not knocking Willie here, he’s just being honest, but the talk MUST be about winning the rest of the games, not ‘Trying’. Trying leaves yourself an out. Detroit doesn’t ‘Try’. It’s a mentality we need to adopt. Nobody is going to chide you for going out and proclaiming that you have the mindset of getting it done.
Get desperate, get hungry. Take no prisoners and just will yourselves to DO it.
I know people are going to say I’m nitpicking here, but words MEAN something. They are a gateway to a person’s beliefs and mentality. Ask any salesperson in the business world. Big deals get closed just by reading into what a person says and how they say it. The word ‘Try’ is always considered a gateway to weakness. I’m not saying Willie is weak, just that the word ‘Try’ instead of ‘Do’ is important.

@Cynic, I don’t think you are nitpicking at all, I think you’re absolutely right. Believing you can do something is the first step. Saying “try” does leave room for doubt. It seems as though they are looking for a stroke of luck or miracle. Just believe in yourselves boys! I know we sure as heck believe in you! We know you can win this thing, we saw it in game 2. Get into the winning mindset! Get confident! Pride, passion, power. Remember?? We still believe!

No one will fault your heart and talent, JW. Don’t do anything to hurt your shoulder in the next game. This series is over and I’d hate for you to make your injury worse for a lost cause.
Get healed up in the offseason and hopefully, you and Kopi can have a great year next year. Obviously, without the Tin Man on your line, but someone who can actually skate and score.
Folks, just be grateful that the team made the playoffs. They had such a minute chance of making it past the first round given how this team is made up, how it is coached, and how it really, just barely made the playoffs.

@KingsFanFTW,
Two years in a row of this is really painful, but oh well, such is life of a Kings fan.
Kopi’s injury was the nail in the coffin. With him healthy, they may have had a better than decent chance in the playoffs, but when he went down, it gave the Kings even less room for error. It made it even more important that the team play a solid defensive game for 60 minutes.

@KingsFanFTW,
Was that sarcasm? Not sure I can tell. In any case, Kopi was valuable to the Kings on both ends. With his points, it gives the team a chance to get a lead, hence the defense didn’t have to be perfect for 60 minutes.
And his defensive play was recognized by most people. One of the best two-way forwards.

Being a Kings fan is a curse. Its a constant dedication to a team that disapoints you. It a psychotic hope that next year maybe the year. That someday we will rise from the enternal damnation weve been forced into and finaly win the giant silver goblet of happiness known as the Stanley Cup. Until that day comes and hopefully its in your life time you sit in with a demented smile on you face and watch this cursed team because what other choice is there. We are to stubborn to jump on the big gay quacks bandwaggon and its the only thing weve ever known. No normal person wants to be a kings fan it takes a level of insanity that few possess. Please win for god sakes

@dmitriy,
You are absolutely correct. The team did not play well in front of him. Quick has been good in these last two games, but not great. In Game 3, had that been a great game for Quick instead of just a good game he would have been able to stop one of those 5 second period goals and we would have won that game.
Starting Bernier in Game 5 serves two purposes. It gives him some playoff experience in a series that is pretty much out of reach now. And it changes up the game dynamics. And if Bernier can have a great game, it might just give the Kings the push they need to return to being one of the best defensive teams in the league.

@Forum67,
I think he deserves a chance to get a playoff game under his belt this year. JQ may not have been the cause of the last two losses, but maybe the team will respond to the change. It’s not so much as punishment for Quick but something to try and jumpstart this team.
The series is pretty much out of reach, so why not give the kid a chance to play. Again, not because Quick was horrible, but because the team in front of him was leaving him out to dry.

San Jose is a big and very fast team! We have size but for the most part slow. Smyth just cannot get his leg’s moving and probabley never could. DL has to put him on waiver’s and free up $3m in cap space if he is not claimed. Stoll is solid but also slow and is not right for this team so possibly we can trade him. Handzus will not be re-signed. My point being, if we are to become an elite team then bring up the kid’s with speed and some size. We have a good foundation. You all saw what a little grit, speed and talent did for our third line.
[Reply]
If anyone is tired of hearing me say that the structure of this team is based on Pre Lockout NHL don’t hesitate to let me know. Personally I’m tired of hearing myself say it (or type it as the case may be). It’s really not necessary to be Sherlock Holmes. Just LOOK AT THE GOOD TEAMS. They ALL have speed and they all have skill.
Denis Potvin said the other day on the radio that yes you can win a lot of one goal games but eventually it catches up with you and after a while because of the demands of that, no matter what you do you just can’t get it done.
The Kings are built to win one goal games. Admirable that the Caps LEARNED to play that way during the season, but as any hockey fan knows, they also have the talent to score as well. Not only that, but they have speed, they have skill (apart from AO) and up front the Kings don’t have enough. Schenn I’m sure is very good. But to think that that in and of itself will make the difference to get over the hump is pure folly. Other changes are needed. Absolutely.

@number 6, We have to take a hard look at our coacing for next season. We gotta open up the offence! Of course we will need about four good young speedster’s with some grit and size. I don’t think TM can coach this way.

@number 6, I agree with you the kings are the slowest,least skilled team in the league,and what do we get at the deadline? another slow big body to play down low and get left in the fog by players with speed and skill.

Except for the balls of spit on the ice tonight, Penner was the biggest blob. OMG!…did you all see him in the third lose puck after puck and pass it behind guys? Others on this team were looking to him to pick it up when Kopi went down…he CHOKED and choked all of us in the process. Thanks Penner…at least you didnt lose any pay for your performance. It could have been very interesting had he given some effort. We could have won this series with just that little bit. But now we’re right back where we have been for decades, looking forward to next year because after these last two disgraces thats all we have.
