Sharks 5, Kings 2

A strong start to the third period by the Sharks resulted in two early goals.

The Sharks got the puck deep in the Kings’ zone, and Patrick Marleau controlled it in the corner. With three Kings keeping an eye on Marleau, Joe Thornton went to the front of the net all alone, took a pass from Marleau and scored from close range to give the Sharks a 4-2 lead 2:28 into the third period.

Just 54 seconds later, the Sharks had a three-goal lead. Immediately after an offensive-zone faceoff win, the Sharks’ Dan Boyle fired a shot from the point. Joe Pavelski got a tip and the puck got through traffic and beat Quick to give the Sharks a 5-2 lead 3:22 into the third period.

    Pull Quick already!!! He’s not on his game. Bernier has talent too. TM flubbed game 3 by not calling a timeout during the 2nd period slaughter. Now his stubborn loyalty to Quick is killing them in game 4. Bad coaching is definitely a factor here. When the sharks start the period bang, bang, bang, your goalie just ain’t got it tonight! Quick is struggling in the series. Time to put Bernier in. He can’t do any worse than Quick has the last 5 periods. Like the song says, “You got to know when to hold’em and when to fold’em”. number 6 Reply:

    @vplaza,

    For me that’s something DL HAS To Address!! I mean it. If he thinks that it’ll be different next year cause they have to learn to win he’s being delusional. This team does NOT have enough speed and skill up front. Consequently an offensively skilled team can take more chances – and if our d breaks down, which it seems to be doing one whole hell of a lot the last two games, they’re gonna score. And score they have.

    This is unlikely to change until the balance up front changes, AND the talented d that they have stop A) taking stupid penalties and B) learn to settle down under pressure.

    [Reply]

    vplaza Reply:

    @number 6,

    With the lack of skill and speed, the team as a whole has to play a nearly perfect game for 60 minutes. That’s an awful lot to ask from this young team. And we’re going to get younger if the talent from the minors are brought up.

    It’s going to be interesting to see what happens, if anything, during the offseason.

    As someone else said, this squad shouldn’t really be in the playoffs. They slid into the 7th slot (fortunately) and are playing the way a 7th seed does. Until we have two really good lines, squeking into the playoffs and early exits will be the norm.

    [Reply]

    number 6 Reply:

    @vplaza,

    I agree. vplaza, I am frustrated because it’s DL’s JOB to find talent for the whole team. There is undeniably talent in the d corps, but they aren’t playing like it.
    Also, yes, wonderful to still have four or five good D prospects in the minors. We need that like a hole in the head. Voynov, Muzzin and Hickey are Not what we need at the moment. This team needs a Total Restructuring up front.

    Kenny44 Reply:

    @vplaza, Sharks have no fear about trading rushes with us, so they send a D every time and bait us to open up in a counter attack. They know they’ll get their chances that way, and they’ll bury more

    I think that four straight home playoff losses where the other teams speed and skill is the difference should hopefully show DL that this is a different beast; this nhl that we have now. Slower grinding players aren’t gonna get it done in the current environment in hockey. If you can prove me wrong kudos to you, but I highly highly doubt it.

    If that were the case, teams like Detroit, Chicago, Vancouver and San Jose would Not be the best teams in the league. Even the Ducks have skill and speed up front, same with Washington. Heck even Boston has way more skill up front.

    Yeah, but CB, DL drafts according to the types of players he likes, Not according to how the coach coaches. I have No Problem getting guys like Clifford. My gripe is that in concentrating so thoroughly on goal and D he has accomplished what? Good defense that clearly doesn’t translate to the post season. It didn’t last year and hasn’t this year.

    They need a faster and more stable team. That simple. Until they manage that they’re gonna have problems in the post season.
