A Kenny G experience?

The Kings will be on the ice for their morning skate in El Segundo at 10 a.m. in advance of tonight’s home game. One San Jose columnist, it seems, is looking forward to some quiet time tonight. Mark Purdy of the San Jose Mercury News, in his column this morning, referred to a Kings game at Staples Center as “more of a Kenny G experience.” What do those of you in the “city of showoff glitterati” — another Purdy phrase — think about that?

Mark Purdy: At quiet Staples Center, Sharks won’t have much in the way of noise to distract them

Remember our best chants in order are:
    #1 – Go Kings Go!
    #2 – Let’s Go L-A!
    #3 – Niii-emmm-iii, Niii-emmm-iii, Niii-emmm-iii(the longer and louder the better).

This is a big game Kings fans. The Sharks’ fans have been calling us out as terrible fans on their blogs. Let’s show them how we support our teams.

    mash-ola Reply:

@BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy, I’ve been to HP Arena, and it IS very loud. Their fans (if their team is winning and not sitting on their hands like they were Saturday) do make a lot of noise. But it’s magnified by the accoustics of the low, aluminum roof, so that statement about the fans at HP are the loudest in the NHL is a misleading statment. Their building is nowhere near as nice as Staples. The sightlines are better, but Staples is more spread out because of the Luxury boxes, and you can tell that the Sharktank cut a few corners to save money whereas Staples put more into the building knowing it would be used for the Kings, Lakers, Clippers, Sparks, Grammy’s, MTV Awards shows, concerts, etc.

Now… As far as Mark Purdy at the Merc, there’s a huge difference in his blog compared to Rich’s: For Mark, it’s a job. For Rich Hammond, IT IS HIS PASSION. Purdy will put out a post or two each day, maybe more on gamedays. But Rich puts out something anytime anything significant happens, not to mention all the features. The proof is in the pudding. Look at all the fans here posting. They don’t get half the traffic this site does. And on a sidebar, J.P. Hoornstra does a terrific job on the Duck’s blog at Quackalackin’. I just don’t understand why none of the Duck fans ever post there…

Anyway, sick of the SJS fans/media, and hope we can make them eat their words…

except in the upper bowl in the corners, those are many degrees worse than a comparable seat at Staples. Kind of like the upper behind the goal at the stinkPond. Awful. They might have made a few upper reaches of S C a good distance away, but I’ll take them over either of those. The lower bowl at Staples granted is hard to beat.

(and by the way, I read that the stands at the Tank were half empty by the end of the last game. Methinks Purdy doth protest a little much….)

    [Reply]

    Space_Shot Reply:

    @rontheking,

Yeah, in his and the Shark players defense, none of them have been to or played at Staples in the playoffs. During the regular season, the Staples crowd is mostly a non-factor. During the playoffs, it’s an ENTIRELY different sounding arena. But also in his defense, the acoustical design of Staples is terrible and does not do a good job of keeping and/or funneling the sound down to the ice. It’s a quieter area due to design, not due to the fan participation (usually.)

That being said, it’s time for anyone going tonight to make us proud! I’ve lost my voice after every playoff game I’ve been to, and I expect nothing less from you. I drew the short straw this year with the guys I share season seats with, so I’m counting on a first round win to see them live in round 2!

  15. Brian says:

There’s some truth to that (anyone there for the last Canucks game can relate, as that was a HOME game for the Canucks at Staples), but I wouldn’t incite the other side like that as a columnist, especially a topic that is somewhat disrespectful to the Kings fan base. I treat regular season games like football games, but the rest of the crowd from my experience is rather passive — let’s hope it’s different for a home playoff game, in an extremely winnable series at this point.

If I could be there, I would, but I certainly hope the building is intense, filled with energy that the Kings can feed off. I will definitely be yelling at the TV from my house, if that helps at all!

After reading the article, I really get the impression that this guy is very depressed that he has to live in a place like San Jose instead of LA. Notice how many times he mentions celebrities (that he can’t meet), Cristal (that he can’t afford to drink), and the vast number of luxury boxes (that he can’t get in to). He has to console himself by throwing out a meaningless insult that a) isn’t really true, and b) has little to no bearing on who will win the game. If the Sharks are focused on the level of the volume in the arena they’re playing in, no wonder they are perennial playoff choke artists!

  32. EASportsMgt says:

I will tell you the most interesting thing about this story and it has nothing to do with the noise. SJ coach and Clowe both mentioned how the difference in goals scored at Staples compared to HP was because of the “players we were playing against”. I don’t think many people realize that on the road, TM does not like to match lines. He feels that it all “evens” outm which to me is absurd. It is one philosophy of his which I do not agree with at all. Not even the players agree, trust me they think it’s the dumbest thing ever. I just hope TM can come to his senses, on the road to win in the playoffs, he is going to have to match those lines better.

Now about the noise, it is obvious that he has not been to any Kings recent playoffs games. I was there last year and the time before when they were in the playoffs and last year was just off the meters. They are in for a huge surprise.

    [Reply]

    Dan H. Reply:

    @EASportsMgt,

While I don’t entirely dissagree, they did a pretty good matchup job on both games on the road so far.

    [Reply]

    KC23 Reply:

@EASportsMgt, TM does match players, but only defensive parings. He has said this multiple times.

    [Reply]

    EASportsMgt Reply:

@KC23, Yes I understand that and the article said as much, but there are 3 forwards, and only 2 defensemen. If you don’t have the right center out there, you can get in trouble. That is why so much praise was given to Kopitar on his stellar defensive skills.

@Dan H. umm I don’t agree with that. The first game they did ok, the second game, by virtue of the Kings taking an early lead on the power play goals, that in itself got SJ off their game, and from then on it was a different sharks team. You will notice tonight and Thursday, the Kings SHOULD be able to dominate the game the full 60 minutes if they really come out hard. But it wouldn’t surprise me if they have come back here to finish the series. That’s my prediction.

    [Reply]

    KC23 Reply:

@EASportsMgt, Fair statement, but just as many goals (if not more) are scored from bad changes of visting teams trying to match than center mis-matches. Pick your posison as it were.

    BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy Reply:

    @KC23, @EASportsMgt,

I think this discussion is more relevant during the regular season, especially with Kopitar available. Without Kopitar, each matchup against a team as deep as SJ creates voids in other matchups, and fatigue becomes a very large problem.

Ironically, if the Kings get the series lead, you might see more matchups created by TM, if he can get a hold on the series Hammer…

Discipline–just as the MON Canadiens play in the playoffs–is the key to this series. Requiring all players to play within the system diminishes the effect of matchups, IMHO.

    [Reply]

    KC23 Reply:

@BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy, Well said. The only way we win is playing the system as one. The Sharks have a huge talent advantage, but the King’s have a huge “heart and system” advantage. I still don’t see how we should possibly be able to win this series, but I would of never thought we would split up north and nearly get both games.

    Cynic Reply:

@EASportsMgt, The reason TM doesn’t put much stock in matchups is because his system is not designed to rely on it. The ‘Defense First’ mentality of our system and the ‘Interchangeable Parts’ idealism of his system basis uses the theory that flexibility for even play will win over matchup strength. It’s just a defensive mentality, and since he’s a defenseman at heart, it makes sense to him. His system believes that even keeled, structured defensive play will always outplay individual matchups because matchups don’t always work and one injury can throw all of your matchups off, forcing you to play ‘weak’ with a hole in your system.

Terry’s system preaches defensive responsibility and consistent system play no matter where you play. Everyone knows the ENTIRE system, therefore when a guy goes down, someone easily steps in to replace them, so (Theoretically) you never play with a ‘Hole’. The problem with TM’s system is this ‘Predictable’ structure and ‘Scoring by committee’ usually leads to low offensive totals, as we have witnessed all season. It’s also a reason why we see so many line up changes from TM. That’s how he looks for chemistry without sacrificing defense. His system allows him to do that.

It’s the thought of ‘Defense Wins Championships’ put into a system. Problem is you also have to score to be successful.

I’ve always thought a hybrid approach is the right way to go: Your top 6 always stays your top 6 and are aggressive/offensive minded with 2 extra guys who can get plugged in if injuries occur. Your bottom 6 are your defensive minded lines who punish, trap and wear down the opponets top 6 with matchups (When you can get them). If you play 2 different systems within a game, you’re always keeping the opposition off balance. There’s much more to it, but you get the idea.

Matchups have their place, but I don’t believe you should rely on them entirely. It leaves you open to get exploited on bad changes, injuries, etc. and IMHO, the players have to think a lot more about matchups rather than just playing the game if you’re too matchup oriented. Just my thoughts.

Last time I went to a Kings / Sharks game I sat next to two moron Sharks fans that spent most of the first period trying to figure out how the red light came on when a goal was scored.

Do not be mad at people like this Kings fans, simply treat them as they are. When they pull up in the short bus to the game offer assistance. I am sure the confusion with numbers must extend to the section numbers and seat numbers and we don’t need mindless Sharks fans walking into walls and starting a lawsuit.

If this team plays like we know they can the crowd will blow the doors off the place.

The crowd was also very, very loud during the 77 Boston series, particularly the 6th game where the Kings made up a 3 goal deficit in the 3rd only to lose late when Hutchison broke his stick trying to clear a puck.

@Bob Weinstein, I was at that game and still stands as the best event of any kind I’ve ever witnessed … and by far the loudest. I was about 10 rows up from the ice in the corner behind King’s goalie when Goring tore off down the ice in overtime to win that game. My late brother David was yelling at me right next to me and I still couldn’t hear him, it was that loud.

There was a 10 minute standing ovation before they even dropped the puck that night.

Mr. Purdy, are you serious about Staples Center, and Kings fans at playoff time? Have you ever been to a Kings playoff game? Hope you’re there tonight. Is this really all you have to write about? How about writing how the only thing Sharks fans know is “Beat LA”. Yeah, that’s original! Or how about this, the Sharks looked AWFUL in game 2, and isn’t that an old familiar sight around San Jose at this time of the hockey season. But, it sounded like the Sharks fans sensed that anyway Saturday night by the boos that were raining down inside that awesome arena the Sharks call home. Or, you could write about how NoCal fans supported the Seals during their time in the NHL. Yeah another NoCal proud hockey era.

I’ll tell you what, you do a little hockey knowledge 101, experience what a real hockey team’s fans and arena sounds and feels like at playoff time, and then sit down at your computer and compose another great article like this one. Until then, focus on your own team and fans!

L.A. fans can be extremely loud (I was at the Mircale on Manchester ever here of that one Mr Purdy?) During the season we sat in 117 row 11 most often; Mrs. McSorleyfan and I yelled so loud and were so nutz that we chased San Jo fans away from our area. I got 2 offers for fights that didn’t pan out. One was from a Rangers fan; the other was a Philly fan. Neither were from Sharts fans. Although our area was loud (Between myself and a Man with hair grayer than mine showing the way from two rows back and the opposite end, closer to 116) there were few stand-outs volume wise in our area of the lower 100′s. Some nights were good; others we could have used help. In the play-offs? DIFFERENT STORY. It was LOUD; we were just soldiers in the army. The fights DID erupt, and I wasn’t really within reach(Not that I wish to be persona-non-grata at my favorite place for hockey). The Sharts are about to learn what the knuckleheads learned the hard way. The Dragon is awake now, and the Dragon has a ROAR.
