This story just never ends… John Zeiler will not be joining the Kings for Game 2 tomorrow night against San Jose, as a replacement for suspended center Jarret Stoll. Here’s a statement/clarification from the team…
“Our intent was to recall (Zeiler), but given the timing of today’s ruling, we could not have him clear re-entry waivers in time for tomorrow’s game.”
Players in recall-waivers situations spent 24 hours on waivers before they are cleared. Oscar Moller is now expected to play in Game 2, although it’s not certain exactly where. There will not be an attempt to call up any other player.
HOORAY!

P.S. Hey Rich, do you know if Schenn would have to clear re-entry waivers? I don’t think he would’ve, but I’m not certain.
Oh, and another thing, how come the Kings management didn’t know about that before they tried to re-call him?

@- ViC -, Well lets do a Referee +/- rating as far as the Kings are concerned in Game 1 and after math.
Calls missed
Demers on Smyth, blow to the head, elbowing, charging(several strides before contact & jumping before contact.) 3 of the above warrant automatic calls.
Demers no suspension. (2 clear things happened that should constitute a suspension and intent was obvious should be at least 3 games.)
SJ on Richardson tripping(Corkscrew move supposed automatic call)
Stoll boarding?(50/50 play)
Stoll Suspended 1 game? (50/50 play)
Summary
Kings prespective Referee Rating -4 penalties and -2.5 in game suspensions. Series isn’t over, but I don’t think it will balance out by the end of the series.
Note: I will need some scratch if the NHL Commissioner Fines me!

Hey Holly,
I asked you earlier, but it doesn’t matter now–Will Zeiler’s absence hurt Manchester?
Somehow, I wonder if the delay in announcing the suspension this morning was influenced by the time of Saturday’s game? (Delay so that 24 hours would take it beyond a possible call up)… No to fuel any conspiracy theories, or anything.

@BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy, I’ll just copy and paste…
Points-wise? Probably not. Presence as a solid checker, an energy player and a locker room guy? Yes. Somehow he’s managed to harness his previously completely out of control energy and use it in a productive manner. Now and again there are glimpses of the old Zeiler (the one that skates like I do, using another object or falling over in order to stop), but he’s overall a different player. He’s even taken on a bit of a leadership role and has worn the A for most games since Cliche went out.
Even though it doesn’t matter, I think it’s an interesting thing to consider. Last year this time I would’ve said absolutely not. I don’t know if Zeiler changed his training or had some other major life change that caused him to mature, but he’s almost completely revamped his game. He’s still in the same role but by becoming less of a liability on ice, he’s actually filling that role. He’s taken more penalty minutes this year, but fewer of them are really terrible penalties. They aren’t the type that make you wonder how stupid he could be. I used to cringe every time he went into the boards because he was constantly on the brink of seriously injuring himself or someone else (including his own teammates). Now instead of simply crashing into them at full speed and usually missing the hit all together, he actually completes the hit or manages to otherwise throw a player off the puck.

@BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy, The thing I like about Zeiler this year, and I think what the Kings liked, is you know what you’re getting with him. There isn’t any pretense that Zeiler could become anything other than a 4th line guy. He’s played center all year and he’s played it solidly. He’s not a guy that comes with a lot of surprises, there’s no ‘Well, if he’s having a good day he’ll put up great numbers and quality minutes, but if he’s in a bad mood then he’ll just be dead on the ice’, he just comes in and gets his job done.
I don’t know how far he got, it depends on whether or not the Kings expected the suspension to happen. If they did he could’ve been on his way out, but it sounds like they didn’t.

@Dk.lakings,
I think it’s funny how much DD bashing has been going on. He might not play with as much spunk as last year, but he has been great defensively. He is a risk taker and always has been. If any of these risks had ended in a goal or huge block (which they had potential to do) people here would be singing his praises! He understands that risks need to be taken for our team to get ahead because they are struggling offensively, not defensively.
We talk about the inconsistancy with the NHL and Toronto, yet the kings fans are teh same way. When the team is winning TM, DL, DD, and others are great. We lose a game and they should be fired. Talk about inconsistancy. The only consistant opinion is the Penner is a waste of space and might as well be on the opposing team wearing a kings jersey.
CB14 Reply:
April 15th, 2011 at 8:07 pm
@Alicia, I think it’s more like the reason we lose is because DD played badly, rather than we lose so DD played badly. When he plays great, the Kings win, when he doesn’t, they lose. DD is one of our most important players and when he plays great, the rest of the team usually follows.
Regarding us fans, we are very consistant. As you said, when the Kings win TM is a great coach, when they lose he should be fired. It’s been that way all season long so how can you say we’re not consistant? LOL Personally I think DL has done a good job with this entire organization and should not be fired. As far as TM goes, he’s a teriffic defensive minded coach with an out of date offensive system. If brings in someone to change the offensive system, and PP, then he can stay. But if he’s to stubborn to change from the “dump and chase” then he should pack his bags, just like Kompon, who should’ve packed his bag 4 months ago IMO.
Alicia Reply:
April 15th, 2011 at 8:30 pm
@Dk.lakings,
I do agree that when DD is at his best offensively we win games. I just don’t agree that it is fair to blame him for the team losing becasue our *arguably* top defensemen isn’t scoring our goals for us, i think a little more blame and disappointment should be put on our fowards (AK included, JW excluded) for not producing goals. I still believe that defensively he has been solid and dependable. Everyone makes mistakes from time to time and he is no exception but overall i am not as nervous when he is on the ice.
LOL! to the consistancy comment. As for TM he has produced a great defensive team and i agree (as all prior comments suggest)that he does need to work on the offensive technique because whatever plan he’s going with now is not doing its job. When you can go twenty something PP without scoring a goal, there is a problem. Our team does’t have the right player to execute the dump and chase, therefore a new technique needs to come into play that fits the strengths of the current team.
Now at THIS point, you HAVE to feel sorry for Oscar. The team has spent all day showing NO confidence in you, just to have it blow up in their faces and now you’re in.
Oh, this is RICH! (Pun Intended)
I hope Oscar just blows doors tomorrow with some insanely great performance so we can find out what Terry Murray will say in the post game about him.

I love Detorit attiued if you are in the playoffs go for it, what ever it takes, DL, HEY I want AHL CUP!
By not calling up Schenn or even hallway it tells me DL wants save job by showing he’s won something in his no rings in 20 years of management.

@Sammuch, I believe Detroit’s minor league team was eliminated, that’s why they recalled like 7 players.

So Rich, does all this Zeiler stuff mean he will be joining the Monarchs in Binghamton for Sunday’s game?????
[Reply]
we need goals so lets call up zeiler? sigh… schenn has 7 points in 7 games with manchester.. zeiler has crap..

@Sammuch,
At this point, I’d say the Monarchs have much more of a chance of winning the Calder Cup than the Kings do of winning the Stanley Cup.

toffoli is a scoring machine. he scored again.

If the LAKings brought Schenn in now, then he would loose one year on his contract automatically. There was never a “Zeiler gets the nod over Schenn” scenario like this makes it sound. Management did a wise thing.
Unfortunately, it seems as if the call-up for Z-man wasn’t the best of plans. I almost have to agree with some of the comments here – that the timing of the league’s announcement is suspect at best! If I was Kings Management, I would like a “review of the play”.

In other news, the Kings have begun scouting in earnest and plan to focus on the best lawyer available in the first round.

@Mel Powell
to continue on the Jonathan Quick / TJ Fast theme, is his last name Speedy? as in “Speedy, Lawyer”? which might work pretty well in the phone book… so you might want to look into that!! go KINGS!

Moller scored a sweet goal against SJ when he was up for a stint last season.
[Reply]
geez. pull your head out of your bums up there at the home office….. Zeiler, no Zeiler, blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda. our own player personnel folks don’t even know the league rules with regard to recalling a future career AHLer!! ridiculous…
that said, glad to have Moller over Zeiler anyday. the guy is just beyond useless. GO KINGS!
[Reply]
The zeiler move was a strategic misdirecting designed to throw SJ off in their gameplan for game two

So during this start of the playoff season, a player can’t get claimed off 24 hours waivers?? You guys are worried about Moller’s size if he playing on the 4th line, he will centered by two bodyguards. I would personally have Moller center the second line and move Handzus down. And swap Penner for Ponikarovsky. So the 2nd line will be Ponikarovsky-Moller-Brown 4th Penner-Handzus-Westgarth. You need to get going Penner. This is the reason we got you. For the playoffs. Hopefully you can bring it on the second line
[Reply]
moeller, zeiler, schenn–none of this matters. the kings are toast if PENNER doesn’t start moving his feet! skate, dude!

@sludgequack, The worst part is when you see one of his good moments. He’s fast, big, and has good hands…. just wish he would use his skills.
On an unrelated question… which fans do you guys hate the most? Mine would be:
1) Canucks (by a wide margin…. just plain obnoxious)
2) Ducks (bunch of junior high girls who wouldn’t know a puck if it hit them)
3) Red Wings (primadonnas who think they deserve very call and every Stanley Cup)

@LAPD line, Penner has got all of that going for him, he just can’t put it all to use at the same time. If he does, it drains his tanks.
