Drew Doughty was a Norris Trophy finalist last season. Is he preparing a campaign for another piece of NHL hardware? Doughty made a huge play in the second period last night, as he parked himself near the goal post and blocked a shot that would have gone into the net and given the Coyotes a 3-1 lead.
DOUGHTY: “Actually, I looked at the replay and I probably could have just lifted the guy’s stick, but that’s just kind of what the reaction was. I didn’t have his stick, so I just kind of went down and made a save.”
Turns out, Doughty fashions himself as a goalie, and still harbors ambitions of putting on the pads some day. I jokingly asked him whether he considered himself a butterfly goalie or a stand-up goalie…
DOUGHTY: “More of a hybrid goalie. I like to make the crazy glove saves, you know? [smiles] I would love to be a goalie, still to this day. When I was younger, I almost quit playing AAA hockey when I was 10. I was going to go back to house league, as a goalie. Thankfully, I didn’t do that. I love goalie. Every time I play roller hockey, I’m in net no matter what. Any time we played pond hockey when I was younger, i would always be in net. I don’t know. I just love being a goalie. i was a goalie in soccer as well. I don’t know what it is, but I just love it, but like I said, luckily I didn’t go back and change, because I probably wouldn’t be here now.”
There are no limits with this guy, nor should there be: he can play defense, forward, and goalie–all on the same shift!

Great now TM going to put him in the net since all these ling changes
But at least he good i say better than Quick and Bernier

@KingsFanFTW, It’s okay if TM wants to move Doughty to goalie or left wing. We’ve got future Norris trophy winner Peter Harrold waiting in the wings.

@KingsFanFTW, Agreed! last year i think he stepped it up in the playoffs!! he was the reason IMO that power play was so good last playoffs! and maybe the reason(along with jmfj) that its been so bad this year! But Drew and JMFJ are big game players! and who ever we play in the first round might want to watch out!… if Penner steps it up!

I need Cliffy or Simmers to have a couple of fights each with Perry, to keep his sorry goalscoring butt off the ice. He is probably playing the best of his life right now, so let’s crush him. We can beat the Sucks. GO KINGS!

DD sure has a knack for being in the thick of things.

That save was sweet! How about the Quick save off the post and then back across the crease off the back of his skate! I was screaming at my TV after they fell behind 2-1, and once again, they give up the tying goal a minute after scoring. Ready to hammer the team on the blog. I’m glad they turned it around.

Hey League, this is “The” you probably know my by my last name “Kings”, I’m the one you only get a few seconds of highlights about on NHLN, the one play by play callers, root against on VS, and the one who has to play some 4 games or so a year in which we play 2 Canadian teams that have an extra skater in a striped shirt for 60 minutes. I know you don’t have much respect for us, even though we made hockey popular on the west coast by trading our whole team for Gretzky. Yes we’ve never won the cup and yes we have been absent from the playoffs for almost a decade, but guess what? You know that team which was the youngest team in the league last year, the one that got the better of Vancouver at times, and the one that knocked many other teams off the ice last year, well where back, and while we don’t have our biggest scorer, we have better resolve and we’ve gotten a little bigger and meaner, and while we may not win the cup this year, we Will be back for many, many more to come, so watch yourself or you just might be lined up for a Clifford or Brownie hit, and be left wondering what the hell hit you, see you in the playoffs. Kings

@Ravens, Not true but appreciate your candor. Scott Laughlin, Phil Esposito and crew on the NHL Network’s Power Play @ Gretzky’s OFTEN take calls and email responses from Kings fans near and far… And do a fine job in recognizing/commending the Kings organization.
It’s always a ‘hot topic’ on the show. If possible catch it or DVR the 1P-3P broadcast during the week.. The content is FAR better than most prime time television offerings out there..

@LBlocal, I’m not talking about having the game live. I don’t think you meant that. They had no problem interviewing Perry from the Ducks after his hat trick and giving them a nice segment. Besides, if the fact that the games end late is a problem for them then that proves the west coast teams are not part of their focus.

@LA_1968, I can relate but it’s an ‘apples to oranges’ argument. From a League/Broadcast/Money perspective: Was last night’s playoff clinching game between two 4-5 seed Western Conference (Clarence Campbell) teams more or less popular (NHL RATINGS WIDE) than a Rat Boy from AnaSlime chasing a Art Ross trophy?

@LBlocal, Rat boy… haha! Too funny. I thought that but never heard it said out loud. I luv you man but I gotta disagree about the coverage. Is it because of ratings, time of night, or because they screwed up (=lameness)? There are points for all of the above because it was a big event which was ignored. The fact is that the only people watching last night after the Kings post game show were Kings and Clucks fans after nice wins. Throw us a bone already. The east coasters had 5 hours of coverage and were asleep after the Kings game. I’ll try the Power Play show again on your recommendation. But face it man if you want Kings coverage don’t watch NHL Network during night time unless you want to wait a week for a tidbit.
Like in baseball… I’m so sick of the Yankees and Red Sox. Then they let some other team play on national tv and still talk about the Yankees/Sox during the game.

I’m a big Doughnut fan, and the save was suh-weet, but I don’t think he’s going to be up for any NHL awards this year. He’s a great player but last year was warranted, this year not so much. He was a little too quiet for my taste.

If Dallas makes it in it is just one more testimony on how good the Kings are and will be for the next few years. If every team in the Pacific makes it in, and we play about a third of our games against the Pacific, what does that say about a team that has a hole punched in it’s offense and still has a chance for 4th in the West? A possible 5 out of 8 playoff teams from the conference we are in, the conference we play day in and day out especially down the stretch says volumes about this team and the grit they have shown at so young an age. I am proud of what they’ve done and am looking forward to surprising some people this year. This is just the beginning of a dominant next 3 to 5 years, Lombardi willing.

I think King fans are way way too hard on DD. I can’t believe some of the stuff I’ve read against DD. The guy is clearly one of the very best, but gets crapped all over regularly when JJ gets a free pass and JJ isn’t 1/10th the defenseman DD is.

@KC23, I find it odd that you had to throw JMFJ under the bus to make your point, kinda doing what you are asking others not to do. However I’d agree that DD bashing has gotten very stale. I think fans think that they have some sort of team insight when they make up mildly offensive nicknames and that the player will read it and go ” Oh well johnny no life called me doughnuts so I better hit the gym and never make another mistake or he’s gonna be real mad and make an even worse nickname”. Lame lol

@Puckn-A, I don’t throw JJ under the bus so much as his -20 +/- thows JJ under the bus. I’m just pointing out how odd it is to hear so many more complaints about DD who is a +13. An absurd +/- difference of 33 between the two players.
