Quick chance for redemption

Jonathan Quick spent the second half of last night’s game on the bench, after he allowed four goals on 16 shots, but Terry Murray had no hesitation today in saying that Quick will start tomorrow night’s big game against Phoenix. Quick has not fared particularly well against Phoenix this season, as he has allowed three or more goals in three of his four games against the Coyotes.

MURRAY: “Quick is our No. 1 goaltender. He’s the guy that we’re riding. When we get to the last two games here, we’ll see how it is. My plan was, going back quite a while, was to get Bernier into one of those two games. So we’ll see if I follow through with it.”

Murray didn’t elaborate, but it’s probably safe to assume that if the final game of the season, the second of back-to-back games against Anaheim, holds major significance for the Kings — such as, if they’re still trying to secure a playoff spot or if they have a chance to get to fourth place — Quick might start over Bernier.

    Garauntee u that in a fee years when Quicks contract comes up they trade him for that LW they need to complete their Cup team and Bernier is the uncontested starter

    Next season I’ll like to see a 50-50 split between games between the 2 Jonathans

    @Paul G,

    I could totally see that happen with the luck of the kings, to Quick. Ive imagined the kings going to game 7 in the finals and being tied and then getting scored on with 0.1 seconds left in the 3rd. I can see Zues with his head down kneeling in front of the net and quick sprawled out prone in the crease.

    I’d cry haha.. wouldnt be the first time the kings have brought a tear to my eye.

    @Bill M., I bet cash money that Bernier will be the one packing someday, and that Jones will take his place backing up Quick. Bernier, as much as everyone on here likes, is too small, has poor rebound control, and plays too deep in his net for being a small goalie. He also had attitude issues throughout his bringing up through the system. As he’s matured, sure he has gotten better, but Jones has better size. I just think as Quick matures, and gains more experience, and we become a better offensive club, he will learn to keep his head into games better, and will be our go to guy for years to come.

    2″ difference does not make Bernier a small goaltender. What you are mostly seeing is Quick’s over-sized Vaughn goalie pads compared to Bernier’s sleeker form-fitting RBK pads.

    PP Anybody? Reply:

    @PP Anybody?, If you go through the sizes of all the top 10 goaltenders in the league in any category, only one goalie is less than 6ft, and that is Tim Thomas. Luongo- 6-3, Price- 6-3, Kiprusoff- 6-1, Howard- 6-0, Bryzgalov- 6-3, Lundqvist- 6-1, Fleury- 6-2, Rinne- 6-5, Brodeur- 6-2, Hiller- 6-2, and on and on. Statistics don’t lie. Size in goal is an advantage, and almost every team in the league now has a sizable goalie. Just a plain fact. Also, I don’t know where you get “baby fat” with Quick. He tested as one of the highest fitness levels coming into camp, and everybody raved about his conditioning this season. so wrong again on that. Now if you thought Doughty was the one playing with Quicker’s pads and mask the other night, that would make more sense.

    Next season will be a great chance for Bernier to take that Number one spot but am telling u this if Bernier never takes it from Quick then am hate to say this most likely he going to get trade or let go

    But am pretty sure he going to take the number one spot if he stay playing great cant go crappy in the beginning of the season then play good in mid season and expect to take the number one spot

    We have two great goalies cant throw the other one under a bus since u have high hopes with Bernier everyone knows Quick not meant for a backup goalie too good to be a backup goalie..They both are too good to be backup goalies

    So in Kings Fans we have to hate one of them leaving the Kings..Remember Quick did great for us in the past two years with us in 2009 almost made the playoffs but we didnt was short in 2010 our first year in the playoff and we did pretty good remember Quick was a rookie in the playoffs

    to me both Good goalies one like to use a the splits alot and really good at a shootout the other looks ahead of plays without getting out of the plays to make the save

    that what i see both good goalies that Kings fan just want to throw one under a bus..to me i be glad to have them both if one leave that going to suck

    @Paul G, I wish everyone would quit blaming Quicker for games like this. The defense was terrible, and that was not the word I wanted to use. This has happened before when the Kings were not just with it. Some of the players even complained about being booed and if this game was at Staples they would have been booed again. I guess some of the players expect us to clap for them even when they play lousy. I guess they are still very young and very immature. I am point to DD right now. Even if the Kings make the playoffs I don’t believe they will go far with that attitude and with the lack of fire they have displayed in the Shark game. I would be happy with Bernier and Jones, Bernier’s only problem was rebounds that it looks to be remedied. I was personally waiting for the playoffs to give final judgement on quick, but I feel a late disappointment and excuses coming just like last year.

    PP Anybody? Reply:

    @Paul G, A. Wrong, and B. Why is this even an issue? I have never understood the whole Quick vs. Bernier fanboy banter on this board. For once in a reeeeaally long time, we have a number one goalie who not only doesn’t suck, but is top 5 in the league in most categories all year. He is hands down the MVP of this season, and yet when the team takes a night off and Quicker gives up a couple goals, it’s “Oh Bernier is the greatest! He was really good in Manchester!” Umm, just a reminder, Labarbera had the same kind of success down in Manchester, yet failed miserably with the Kings as little as 3 seasons ago. Bernier is a capable back up, and I hope he continues to get better. I personally like the comfort of having two goalies that I don’t have to worry about anymore as being the reason why this team can’t win.

    For now, it’s about OFFENSE. This team can’t score. Hasn’t been able to hang with the contenders all year in that dept. If we could score 3 or 4 goals a night, I think JQ or JB would both have even better numbers. As for now, they have to hang on every shot, hoping to keep this team in a game. It’s actually not very fair to ask that much from either of these guys, yet night in and night out, they do just that. GIVE US A CHANCE TO WIN. So yes, if you want to talk about who’s going to lead us to a cup, find us someone who can hit the net with a shot, and get open in the slot for a change.

    Quick can be brilliant and once and a while he has a game like this. Yes, the defense was horrible, but Quick’s kryptonite is a snap (wrist) shot from 30-40 feet in front of the net. Bernier has had his issue with shoot-outs, but in the playoffs, that problem goes away. The other major flaw in the last game was that our forwards didn’t pick up the defensemen coming accross the blue line and getting those 40 foot snap shots.

    BobKnob Reply:

    @Chris P. Bacon,
    I really think using stats like this is pretty suspect reasoning when variance accounts for so much in games (and remember the sample size is so small as well), and many goals are due to defensive breakdowns that really have nothing to do with the quality of goaltending. Unless you can point to something specifically the Yotes do against Quick that exploits a weakness of his, I think you’re just cherry-picking data or being superstitious.

    But it seems to me that Quick hasn’t been as sharp lately, maybe he’s a bit fatigued, I don’t know. I would have probably put Bernier in for 2 of the last 3. You aren’t giving up much, if anything, since they are both very good goaltenders and Bernier is not as tired.

    It’s always ironic to me when the Quick marks, notorious for citing and resting on his laurels (all 2, above average seasons of them), poo-poo those laurels when they don’t work in their favor, as just happens to be the case in this particular match-up.

    Bernier’s sample size is actually 1.5 games, as he went in and cleaned up Quick’s mess on 12/29 and shut out PHX for half a game.

    Let’s just hope Bernier doesn’t have to bring out the mop again tonight and Quick is able to focus on the job at hand. We need the win more than you realize.

    John has always had a good game following a bad game – some would say he’s Due for a good one against PHX too. And if he does bring his A game – it will do wonders for the Kings and their confidence.

    1. Get a Win against the probably Playoff Opponent.
    1a. Clinch the Playoffs.
    1b. Show his teammates that the SJ game was a Fluke.

    But let’s be honest – that SJ game failure was not all John’s fault.

    IMHO TM started the choice to go with quick on all the big games too early. He did this because TM is not a chess player. A chess player would have had his number 1 in mind the whole time but alternated the two to create competition leading all the way up to the series. Now TM is doing this out of blind loyalty like he did last year and we all know that was a huge mistake, or he is doing it from a position of ego which is another mistake. Now if for some horrible reason we lose to PHX then he has painted himself into a corner and team morale is further damaged.

    Goaltending changes are usually not about which goaltender is at fault, but rather a psychological tact to see who the team plays better for and which goaltender responds better to the pressures of playoff hockey.

    His speed, skating and forechecking are good. I don’t really see him making that many big hits, but it’s probably because most players are better than him. He’s trying, they’re just getting out of his way. He needs to work on the offensive part of his game in the offseason. He doesn’t know what to do with the puck when he gets it on the forecheck, and by the time he figures it out, it’s too late. I hope he can improve on that aspect of his game. If he does, he will prove all of his naysayers wrong, and we will have a legit enforcer who can contribute to the team in a 4th line role. I think that’s a pretty valuable role that he can fill, and we won’t have to have a new enforcer every year who can’t play in our line up like we have had in the past.

He just as often makes amazing saves and comes through big for us. Goalkeeping has been a main reason for our success this year, and he’s the guy who’s been in there. Arguably our MVP. His poor performance last night did come at a bad time, however, considering the season he’s had (or even the last two), calling him out for redemption is a little harsh IMHO.
