Update on Toffoli’s status

For those who have asked about the short-term destination of Kings prospect Tyler Toffoli, there’s a partial answer. The Kings are talking to Toffoli about a contract, and the current plan is to have him play for the Manchester Monarchs for the rest of the American Hockey League season. Toffoli, a second-round draft pick last year, led the Ontario Hockey League with 108 points (57 goals, 51 assists) in 68 regular-season games for the Ottawa 67s, but the 67s were swept in the first round of the OHL playoffs. Toffoli had three goals and five assists in the four playoff games. The Monarchs are battling for first place in their division and have three games remaining in the regular season.

I wonder if Schenn gets a crack at our lineup would love to see him play.

    Blue Coconuts Reply:

@Icecrown, I hope not. At least till next year. No need to burn a year of his contract just yet.

Toffoli is someone who I’m excited about, hopefully he gets some quality time in Manchester, and can be lighting the lamp in LA in the next 2 years.

@Blue Coconuts, Kid is 18. He either makes the Kings or goes back to juniors. No Manchester for a couple years.

    Token Reply:

@Token, Oops, he already played 3 years for the 67′s so one more year of Junior.

    Blue Coconuts Reply:

@Token, I meant for the rest of their season this year, and the playoff push, probably should have worded it a little better.

    mrbrett7 Reply:

@Token, He’ll be in Manchester next year (Tofolli). He’s old enough at this point (or will be by next yeat).

    Token Reply:

@mrbrett7, darn, you are right. I can’t even do basic figuring. Kid will be 20 next April.

What about kitsyn,,who is doing great in North America and in the playoffs? he also is stronger than some of these other guys

    [Reply]

    Dominick Reply:

    @Ravens,
I’m still not convinced that Kitsyn will stay in North America too much longer. If he doesn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel he just might bolt. Hope he’s close, because he certainly seems like a quality prospect. Most of all I hope he has the patience to see it thru.

    Paul G Reply:

@Dominick, he’s playing in the OHL for the Mississauga Majors this season and next season he’ll be promoted to the AHL and we’ll c how good he is there

    [Reply]

    Dominick Reply:

@Paul G, Do you really think he’ll stick it out in the AHL. I read an article that had him bolting if he’s not in the NHL soon. I don’t really like the author but haven’t heard anything to the contrary, and have seen a few other analysts who said the same thing. Probably BS, but I have no way of knowing for sure.

    Sydor25 Reply:

    @Paul G,

I’m pretty sure he is still under contract with the KHL and will back in Russia next season. He was given permission to stay in NA after the WJC.

    Bluecoconuts Reply:

@Dominick, I’ve heard that Voynov wants to bail if he’s not promoted soon. Kitsyn, just started playing in north America after the WJC. I don’t think he will bolt that fast. Voynov? If he won’t be promoted, trade him, or he’s gone.

    [Reply]

    Dominick Reply:

@Bluecoconuts, I heard that about Voynov also, from the same article. I’ve been following Kitsyns numbers since he started playing in the OHL and statistically I like what I’ve seen, but haven’t kept track as close as I would have liked to.

    Paul G Reply:

@Dominick, Maxim Kitsyns contract with his KHL club was bought out…if he’s gonna bolt he’s gonna need to get a new contract

    [Reply]

    Token Reply:

@Dominick, Kitsyn wants to play in the NHL. He was already in the KHL and came over to put in some time on ice in North America.

Since he does not have a contract it’s hard to speculate. Kings have been paying well in Manchester with bonuses so we will find out soon enough.

    [Reply]

    Stuart Reply:

@Token, So I’m totally ignorant of how the pay goes for the younger leagues, majors and juniors and stuff… How far down does the NHL affiliate pay payrolls? Only at the AHL level?

So when a player is drafted and plays at the junior level still, which franchise is funding the payroll? Help me out.

    Token Reply:

@Stuart , Oy! Too complex for one of these posts.

    Summary:

There are NHL contracts, AHL contracts and Two-Way contracts (i.e. an NHL contract that is read a different way if the player plays in the AHL).

The team that owns the contract pays the contract, regardless of which way it is read.

There are also agreements between the NHL, AHL and CHL (Juniors) as to the age restrictions and number of seasons played in CHL for prospects, when they can be called up etc.

Since we are talking Kings prospects, they will be signed to entry level Two-Way contracts by the Kings. Both NHL and AHL have minimum and maximum salaries for entry level contracts (NHL $550-900K; AHL ~ $40-65K). Then various bonuses are added on depending on the quality of the prospect etc.

But the bottom line for players in the AHL playing under a Kings contract: Kings pay.

There are also amature and pro tryout contracts, one day contracts etc. Lets not go there.

Juniors is amateur so no salaries.

A junior player like Weal can play for Manchester only if he signs an Amature Tryout contract (which he did) since he is not under contract with Kings.

If Schenns teams playoff season were to end, he would be able to play for the Monarchs or Kings with his existing Kings contract.

    Blah, blah, blah

    Stuart Reply:

@Token, thanks for that mini-breakdown. I was totally not thinking that juniors were amateurs, so that answered that, nobody pays them.

    Thanks again.

  4. Nyck says:

I think we should give him a shot with the big club. I don’t think we have to handle each and every single forward we draft like a goaltender. It’s not going to wreck him if we just give him a shot. We need some sort of scoring touch. If he can bring it great, if not, THEN maybe he’ll have to work his way up through Manchester.

In other news, Mike Riberio just scored a goal in a game he shouldn’t even been playing in. I guess that wasn’t a headshot everyone magically saw.

    [Reply]

    mrbrett7 Reply:

@Nyck, He should be in Manchester. How about he proves he can actually play against adults before just annointing him top 6 minutes.

    [Reply]

    Nyck Reply:

@mrbrett7, We don’t even have a “top 6″. We don’t even have a top line. I don’t see a problem with calling him up for a huge oppurtunity. I don’t see his confidence getting wrecked, or it “ruining” him if he’s not hitting it off.

    [Reply]

    mrbrett7 Reply:

@Nyck, So, you want to take a 19 year old kid, who was cut 2 weeks into training camp, throw him into top 6 minutes in the playoffs, all because he put up great numbers playing against kids.

    Yeah…makes sense.

    Nyck Reply:

@Nyck, if that rationale were always true, there would be no NHL draft. He’s a scorer. That would make one more than we have right now. If it doesn’t translate to the NHL immediately, so be it, I’m just saying I don’t think the risk would damage the player, or the team. We have to give these guys a chance sometime.

    [Reply]

    mcdangles Reply:

@Nyck, I believe what mrbrett7 is saying makes sense. You have to bring the prospects up slowly. Lombardi and the rest of the Kings are not going to throw Toffoli right into the fold. Remember, he has to earn his spot with the BIG CLUB. There are others that have been down on the farm team all year long that will get that chance 1st. Best, and the Kings will, have Toffoli in camp next year to try and crack the Kings roster. I can see him playing and learning the faster pace in the AHL-Monarks if his agent and Lombardi agree on something

  7. Jonsey says:

Regarding Voynov: 1. Even if he could fill in, say, if Johnson got injured, Drewiske or Harrold would get the call, just based on Murray and Lombardi’s track record. 2. Voynov might bolt to the KHL if he doesn’t get the call next year? Lombardi is a card player, he would rather fold on Voynov than open the flood gates for future Russians to bolt if they don’t get to jump the line. 3. It might be better to not trade him until he has some real value. We gave up Teubert as an add on because he hadn’t proven anything because he is so young.

    Token Reply:

@Jonsey, Harrold will likely be cut loose this summer, so Slava Voynov may have a spot in the big club if he brings the goods to summer camp.

Toffoli had a steller season this year in the “O”. Every player has to work on one thing or another to make that jump to stick in the SHOW. Scouts know it, management knows it, the drafted player (Toffoli) knows it. He knows how to put the puck in the net. He has increased his goals score by 20 goals all 3 years for the 67′s. Kitsyn, not impressed with what he has done with the Majors. Let him go back to play in the KHL, will leave a spot on the roster for a player that will show he wants to play for the Kings. Schenn, what can I say? He has done it all in my mind and will bring it up to the NHL level and in 1-2 years, he will be a major key player for the Kings and NHL. I have sais this before on this site, Schenn paired with Toffoli= scoring well needed for the Kings.
