@threepwood, According to the pundits on Hockey Night in Canada just a few minutes ago, DL has spoken with Schenn by phone and has told him he will be called up if the Blades are eliminated from the playoffs.

@threepwood,
I agree, the kings would not burn a year of his rookie status, because that is 1 year less on the backend of his entry level contract when he will be more settled into the NHL. That’s 1 full year plus the playoffs coming off his eligability. I don’t see paying that price just for a playoff run this year.

CB14 Reply:

@cpmc29, I believe it’s once he plays his tenth game his contract kicks in and we lose a year off of it. He’s played 8 games so far this year.
KingsFanFTW Reply:
April 2nd, 2011 at 10:54 pm
@cpmc29, yup it would but they could resign him up and most likely the Kings will do it i dont see why People are worry about that
They going to have to do that no matter what
CB14 Reply:
April 2nd, 2011 at 11:03 pm
@KingsFanFTW, It’s not so much having to resign him, IMO, but rather he would more than likely demand a higher salary, which would come 1 year earlier if we use up a year of his contract this season. That might not be an issue, but if he performs like we all think he will, it would be a significant increase in salary that would affect his cap number and possibly put us right up against the cap 1 year earlier.

I looking for Wayne Simmonds to be our rabbit out of the hat. He has great potential and just needs a spark as he will be amazing. He is Mr. Hustle and his stick handling is too fast for the camera to follow. He needs to shoot sooner though, he seems to wait a half second too long and he loses the shot. I he develops his wrist shot, he going to be dangerous.

In other news: Congratulations to Ilya Kovalchuk
Ilya Kovalchuk is the proud new owner of a brand new Samsung – 85″ Class / 1080p / 240Hz / 3D LED-LCD HDTV. The purchase was made earlier today at a local audio/video store near Kovalchuk’s residence in New Jersey. The TV not only has 3D but also has internet features, and according to the salesman, can pretty much do anything including holding your winky while you go to the bathroom. When Kovalchuk asked the salesman what the TV couldn’t do, he told him it couldn’t get the New Jersey Devils into the playoffs nor erase that plus/minus -98 career rating.
The purchase of this spectacular TV couldn’t have come at a better time as Ilya Kovalchuk will be watching the playoffs from the comfort of his living room. New Jersey was officially eliminated from playoff contention with a loss to Montreal today 3-1.
Congrats Ilya!!!!!! Thanks for not signing with LA.

Good 2011 Kings Hockey win today – two ugly goals and a solid D. We should all make sure our expectations are set no higher than that cause that’s all we’re going to see from here on.
People defend Smyth here but I dont know how – he’s a zero offensively and slipping on his D. And people here talk about Oscar’s skills but he never uses them; all he ever does is skate wide and take long shots with no traffic in front. Do you see any of the puck-handling skill you see with someone like JW? I dont, and without that his size will prevent him from ever sticking at the top level.
I thought Richardson should have been in the top stars, he played a great game.. as did his whole line. And the 4th line was solid as well. With Penner seeming to find some motivation today, the only lost line was Stoll’s, tho it seems every line Smyth ends up on is handicapped. Shut Smyth down for this next week and see if a rest can rejuvenate him for the playoffs, cause we could use the offense.
Tho I dont have many high hopes for the playoffs with so little offense, I’m proud the guys have battled on when all the pundits wrote them off. Who knows?
GKG!

@bbb7, i second these thought, and please peeps, quit thinking a kid can come up and make a difference, schenn will do as much as moeller has, sorry if i mispelled his name…as for penner, he looks real slow and lazy, but one thing he does that i like is he’ll throw the puck to the net most of the time, thing is no one is there, not his fault, but would like to see him step it up with his body, he could have easily taken a few pucks to the net saturday but didn’t come on big boy use that body.

The lively legs line is awesome and was the best line by far this afteroon. Great to see Richie and Simmer step up, and Cliffy just gets better with every game. @KingsFanFTW, I’m actually hoping San Jose and Dallas both beat the Ducks. The reason being that a lot of things would still have to go right to win the division, and even if we do win the Pacific, theres a good chance we’d meet Chicago in the first round, and we all know how we matched up vs them in the regular season. Also, I don’t want the Ducks to have a chance to pass us up when that home and home comes around. Dallas isn’t going to win out, and we’re aren’t going to lose out- we can afford a Stars win tomorrow at the expense of the Disneyland Ducks

Not necessarily. We need a combo of two points. So if Dallas wins out the rest of their games, we will need two points in our last 4 games. Even if they are both OTL’s or S.O. losses. Somehow, I think we will fare better than just squeaking in, though.

@KingsFanFTW, You said it! Hope the Ducks lose tomorrow. As it stands now, the Ducks need to make up three points, and losing to Dallas today would be huge…
[Reply]
Ironic. There was a poll question earlier in the season as to which team out of the Pacific division do you think won’t make the playoffs. At the time I think all 5 teams were in, and Dallas was leading the Pacific division.
Now it looks like Dallas might be the only one not to make it. Bwahahahaha!
I hope the Ducks cream them tomorrow, because it gaurantees our playoff birth, and also because their going to need all the points they can get since they’re going to lose their last 2 to us. Kings for 4rth seed Ducks for 5th.

What I’m concerned about dommer, is how our style will fair in a series. Will the other team get our number in a couple of games? It’s a pretty simple system and with our goal production down, if another team can get a 2 goal lead were pretty much done. Or, will the boys step up and start putting pucks in the net?

If we play the Quacks in the playoffs, it will be a case of strength vs strength (Quacks O vs Kings D), and weakness vs weakness (Quacks D vs Kings O). I like our chances with the 2 Johnathan’s vs Emery / Vertigo Hiller.

@King John, When I was at the November game at Honda Center where they beat us 2-0, Selanne was flying by Martinez, and Doughty like they were in mud. I have stated this before, but I will say it again..this guy should be drug tested, and if he is found to have anything in his system he should be suspended for the rest of the season until he appears before Bettman in the summer. Sorry, but I am suspicious of anyone that is Selanne’s age that is not only playing at 40, but pretty much not anywhere near retirement. Remember, Gretzky was skating like he had a piano on his back at 38 !

Are you really suggesting that Selanne is saturating his gefulte fish with steroids?

@King John, Yep, Selanne gets a tip from my cap. Amazing year he is having and not playing with that great a line mates. Age 40 and he’s still better than 95% of the rest of the league.

@jess,
I’m with you. I don’t want us to secure it by Dallas losing, rather we should go into the next game and take it. The Smucks have been really hot and lucky lately and I would prefer we meet them after a few losses bring them back down to earth. I have a feeling we will be either 4th or 5th at the end, and in either position our opponent in the first round will be the Yotes.

Ottawa 67s eliminated. Bring up Toffoli and give him a game or two in place of wetgarth. What’s the worst that could happen? We don’t need Westgarth the rest of the way. This is playoff hockey- no fights! For pete’s sake there weren’t even any penalties called today!

@Tony, Right, bring a scorer into the NHL with no experience into a 4th line role.
Not to mention in the most important games of the season.
But that probably worked on NHL’11.
I’ll defer to Terry Murray on this, thank you.
And people please stop the Westgarth bashing.

-release him
-don’t play him
-keep him in the pressbox
-loose #19 jersey for the remainder of season
-his skating is suspect
-his goal scoring in non-existent
……..truth always hurts most.
He’s bad, real bad. No more Westgarth!!

Forget first in Division now. Kings would have to win out all four and Sharks would have to drop 3 out of 4 in regulation. Not gonna happen.
But Fourth in West would be sweet and is very doable. If we can get 6 points in our remaining 4 games we’d be hard to catch.
If we do get fourth somehow it would be a waste if it was against the dux imo.
Keep it up boys

@Kings x, Phoenix does NOT have our number this year and their injuries are nearly as bad as ours. the Yotes are the easiest match up left. Detroit’s goal tending is horrid, they are very beatable. Preds and Ducks both would be pretty tough although if the Ducks lose Lubo their chances go down a bit.

I know the Kings are playing very well. Good. Great even. But I really would like some reinforcement in the form of a forward. Moller can stick around, but I don’t see him making the club next year. He doesn’t have it. Who do you think could give us a boost?
[Reply]
@LA_1968, Well that was one defensive battle. Cliffy-Richie-Simmer, some line huh? Especially Richardson was on fire today. Maybe it has something to do with Richards, maybe our Richie wants to be the better Brad out there? And for all the guys calling out Penner after the VAN game, he really stepped up to the challenge.
I missed most of the first period because of a broken stream, but seems like both teams really were good at boxing out the opposition and keeping them on the outside. Glad that the bounces went the Kings’ way this time around.
And oh my, Brown’s goal, even though it was an empty-netter, that was one glorious moment as a Kings fan, watching him humiliate the Stars team. Huge game and a huge win.

@Kings x, I like Blankman. I can just see Penner commenting on our concerns for his lazy play with “You wouldn’t understaaaaaaand.”

Was at the game, but watched it again on DVR. My take.
Simmonds line was excellent. All the defenseman were very good and looks like TM’s switch with Scuds and Mitchell will work out well.
Worst line was Stoll’s. Didn’t like that line much at all. Stoll defense has definately dropped a notch or two and with Smyth being so slow and Moller running around that is not a good line at all.
Penner had a better game. Can’t believe a guy that big plays so soft. I question that guy’s heart, I’m not impressed at all so far.
I sure hope we resign Zues, he is so important to us defensively. Stoll and Smyth are expendable, but Zues is not imho. The guy has taken two big hits to the head the last two games and gets right back up. Now that guy has heart.
Another soft goal from Quick. That concerns me. I know Quick is our guy and is number 1, but in my mind Bernier is playing better atm.
Richardson has really started to step it up at the right time and it looks like Simmonds is looking more and more like his old self (last season).
Seems like Lewis may grow into in top 6 roll some day. Not there yet, but the kid can flat out play. He seems to improve every second he’s on the ice. Love his game.
Martinez. How lucky are we? Another first class D-man? What a gift we got with him. Our defense is so much better than last year it isn’t even funny. Our goal tending is also in a much better position with Quick being rested for the playoffs and Bernier sharp if Quick slips up.
Man I miss seeing Kopitar. Get well soon.
I haven’t been a huge TM fan, but he sure has done a great job this year. My only strike against TM is with the PP. Waited way too long in the season before changing the look and now it seems they are having a difficult time adjusting to something different. Over all though, TM has done fantastic with the team.

@KC23,
Stoll is not expendable.
Certainly not while he gains us points as effectively as he does in shoot-outs; and while he maintains his winning face-off percentage.
I don’t expect — the by-then 36-year-old — Smyth to be re-signed at his current contract rate.
I agree about Zeus and Lewis and Martinez (who’s a wildly better player than he was last season).
But I’m not with you on Penner. He’s like a lotta big players — their very size and loping skating style conceals their game. He’s more valuable than you give him credit for. Don’t question his heart. No one who’s played where he’s played and as effectively as he’s played is without heart.
And who doesn’t miss Kopi?

Harty Reply:

@tuan jim, I cannot fundementally agree with Penner, with his size he needs to show people he belongs here on the Kings and in the NHL.
His game is soft for a big guy, I don’t mean he has to fight just show some drive. He is in nuetral most games and not even moving when he played with Kopi. Waste of a trade right now, he may catch fire or not but right now he is a waste.
Pick it up Penner show what kind of real man you are…….

@KC23,
The same scorer’s table has had a tough time finding a lotta other class players’ games during stretches of this season. Penner is not unique in that regard.
It crosses my mind that Dallas may beat the Ducks on Sunday.
If so, it’s not all that unreasonable to believe that they can win out their last four games — against Columbus, two against Colorado, and a final against Minnesota.
They could conceivably wind up with 97 points. Though I hope and trust the Kings will already have won a playoff berth by then, the possibility that every Pacific Division team will make the post-season is still not outlandish.

@tuan jim,
I am not as worried about the Kings. Even without JDubs and Kopi, the team is still playing grade A hockey to drop all 4. But Dallas is really behind the 8 ball. They have to hope Chicago or Anaheim seriously has a bad week.

@tuan jim, The thing that makes Dallas making it “outlandish” imho is how poorly Dallas has played since the all star break. I see no reason for that to change what so ever.
Yeah, the Avs are easy pickens, but the Ducks, Columbus and the Wild not so much. It wouldn’t surprise me if Dallas can only get 4 or 5 points the rest of the way and it would be on par with how they have played since the all star break.

@KC23, Moller is not the right fit for the NHL, he hasn’t go the heart or talent of other small men.

Moller isn’t now nor in the future able to really help the kings.

@Harty, Moller was very capable two seasons ago and when he was first called up this season. He looked ok playing with Kopitar and has good skills and playmaking ability. However, I do agree that he is getting thrown around a lot. I think he needs to readjust his approach and he will be fine. It’s all about perspective. I see Brown take bad positions and lose the puck along the boards frequently but it doesn’t mean he lacks the skill to play in the NHL. We are winning…try to be happy about it, man.

Wondering if there is any chance for a play off appearance.
Just looking for some offensive depth for our run.
I think of these Kings being similar to the 92-93 Montreal Canadians.

I hope the Stars beat the Ducks today. I hate the Ducks. I would rather see the Kings win a game and secure their playoff spot rather that rely on another team especially the Ducks to do the work. Relying on other teams to get you into the playoffs seems like a crutch used by teams that may not be able to get themselves in. That’s just my thoughts.
