Power-play personnel changes only minor

The Kings went 0-for-4 on the power play Tuesday against Edmonton, but they did generate nine shots on goal. It’s a power-play unit that is now without Anze Kopitar and Justin Williams, but the Kings haven’t made significant personnel changes. In the previous game, Oscar Moller stepped into Williams’ power-play role, and last night Ryan [...]

So far, so good for Lewis

One game does not make a career, or a season, of course, but it’s fair to say that Trevor Lewis did quite well for himself last night in his debut as the Kings’ second-line center. Playing between Ryan Smyth and Dustin Brown, Lewis assisted on both of Brown’s goals and had 17 minutes, 7 seconds, [...]

Kopitar surgery `successful’

The Kings have said that Anze Kopitar had “successful surgery” today to repair torn ligaments in his right ankle. Kopitar is scheduled to start some form of rehab work as soon as possible, but he’s not expected to be back on the ice until mid-summer at the earliest.

Kings rely on foxhole mentality

For the Kings, it’s one game without Anze Kopitar and one win. Of course, that win came against Edmonton, which has been in last place in the Western Conference for most of the season. A tougher test will come tomorrow, against first-place Vancouver, but at least the Kings know that if they play with poise [...]

Wednesday practice update

No changes or surprises out of practice today, as Jonathan Quick will get the start in goal tomorrow against Vancouver and everything else is scheduled to remain the same. Terry Murray reiterated today that no reinforcements will be on the way, and that the message to the team is to win with what is currently [...]

Will the `A’ be movable type?

First, a quick note that today’s practice has been pushed back to 12:30 p.m. In the absence of alternate captain Anze Kopitar, Jarret Stoll wore the “A” on his sweater last night against his former team, the Edmonton Oilers. Will Stoll now pass it along? Terry Murray said he hasn’t made firm plans about what [...]

Postgame notes (March 29)

Some notes from last night’s game… – The Kings completed a four-game season-series sweep of Edmonton as they beat the Oilers 2-0 on Tuesday night at Rexall Place. – The Kings beat the Oilers three times in regulation and once in a shootout this season. The Oilers totaled five goals in the four-game series. – [...]

The view from Edmonton

The good folks of Edmonton still turn out in large numbers — last night’s announced crowd of 16,839 appeared to be an accurate count — to watch some rough results. The Oilers are now 0-7-3 in their last 10, nave been shut out three times during that span and scored one goal in four other [...]

Murray postgame quotes

Terry Murray’s postgame thoughts… (on Trevor Lewis’ game…) MURRAY: “He’s been our hidden weapon all along. [smiles] He played well tonight. The line was good. I liked Brown a lot, obviously scoring two goals. Ryan Smyth played a heck of a game for us here tonight, back in Edmonton, his old team. And Lewis was [...]

Brown postgame quotes

Dustin Brown’s postgame thoughts… (on the importance of the win…) BROWN: “I think this was an important game for us, as a team, considering everything that has happened in the last week with injuries. I thought we had the right attitude coming out. Coming into this game, that was the one thing we were concerned [...]

Lewis postgame quotes

Trevor Lewis’ postgame thoughts… (on his expectations for himself, and the results tonight…) LEWIS: “I have pretty high expectations for myself. I just kind of wanted to play my game, and I knew my minutes would probably be up a little bit, so just chip in a couple more. Brownie got open a few times [...]

FINAL: Kings 2, Oilers 0

Dustin Brown’s two second-period goals — with two assists from Trevor Lewis — held up, and Jonathan Bernier made XX saves for his second shutout of the season and his third career shutout as the Kings picked up an important victory in the playoff race. More from the locker room to come…

End of second: Kings 2-0

Shots on goal were 13-10 in favor of the Oilers in a penalty-free second period, and the Kings’ Dustin Brown scored the period’s two goals.

Kings 2, Oilers 0

Lewis and Brown connected connected again to give the Kings a 2-0 lead with 5:04 remaining in the second period. After Edmonton’s Ryan O’Marra couldn’t control the puck behind his net, Lewis picked it up and fed a centering pass to Brown, who scored from close range.

Kings 1, Oilers 0

The Kings broke the scoreless tie 5:11 into the second period. Trevor Lewis picked up the puck behind the Edmonton net, cut to the front and spotted Dustin Brown parked near the right post. Edmonton defenseman Ladislav Smid went to his knees to try to cut off Lewis’ pass, but it got through and Brown [...]

End of first: 0-0

In a penalty-filled first period — the Kings took two, the Oilers took three — the Kings held an 18-7 edge in shots on goal but neither team got on the scoreboard, as Edmonton goalie Nikolai Khabibulin looked particularly sharp.

Scouting the Oilers

It’s a notable night off the ice for the Edmonton Oilers, as longtime radio play-by-play voice Rod Phillips will call his final game after 37-plus seasons. Tonight’s game is the finale of Phillips’ 10-game “farewell tour,” and ends a career that began when the Oilers were still in the World Hockey Association. As for the [...]

They will be the centers of attention

The Kings will start tonight’s game with a center depth chart of Michal Handzus, Trevor Lewis, Jarret Stoll and Brad Richardson, going line by line. How will they end the game? Handzus is a natural to move into the top-line spot, but Terry Murray has indicated that he will keep a close eye on both [...]
