Canucks 3, Kings 1

After Kings winger Kyle Clifford got a five-minute penalty for checking from behind (and a game misconduct), and Matt Greene took a cross-checking penalty, the Canucks had a two-minute 5-on-3 advantage. They scored on it, with 4:26 remaining in the third period. After a flurry of activity, and with Quick basically sitting on the ice trying to defend, Ryan Kesler lifted a shot into the net to give the Canucks a 3-1 lead.

They held in there for a long time. Just didn’t have enough. Totally reminded of the playoffs last season. Vancouver just waits and waits and waits some more until you make a mistake. Then game over.

Not until we make a mistake, they wait until the refs make a mistake. Brutal.

@wavesinair, I absolutely love the “New NHL”. This game has gotten completely out of hand. Fire Betman. Fire all these refs. My brother told me 3 years ago that an American has a tough time beating a Canadian team because the refs will be bias. I kept telling him no way that’s the case.

Example 1 – Luongo throws his stick (auto penalty shot) – no call.
Example 2 – Zues gets a hit to the head while trying to beat out an icing call. It could have been roughing, elbowing, interference or hit to the head – no call
Example 3 – Clifford hits a guy in the shoulder and he goes into the boards awkwardly – 5 and a game. How? Why? Clifford wants to know?
Example 4 – Greene throws a petty crosscheck into the midsection of Canucks forward, he goes down, refs arm goes up. I’m not an on the ice trashtalker when I played hockey throughout prep school and college (I know they were American schools, but whatever) but when guys went down that easy after something like that I would say on my way to the box, if you actually fell because of that hit the gym because that was pathetic or get out of hockey and into diving because that’s where you belong.
This is just terrible. Absolutely terrible. As a hockey fan this is pathetic. I would be ashamed to be a Canucks fan after that win.
Kings – Please DO NOT act like this. There is no place in sports for poor sportsmanship like what Vancouver just showed. Shame on you Vancouver and shame on you Refs for calling a terrible 3rd period. Fire Betman for this happening under him.

Kings are playing with valor and we will move on and keep racking up the points. First round Nucks will be someone else’s problem.

    BobKnob Reply:

    @Puckpoker,
I’m OK with the call too, I think they pretty much had to call something. As long as it doesn’t turn into a suspension. The guy turns his back at the last moment (like we’ve seen so many times around the league this year) near the boards after clearly seeing a hit coming. Will players ever learn their lesson and stop doing this? Someone is going to get seriously hurt trying to avoid a check or draw a boarding penalty. At some point you have to just man up and absorb a good hit head on.

Luckily Kessell was able to walk that massive blow Greene gave to him. Do the refs even bother with calling diving any more?

    #20 for life Reply:

@Colorado Kings Fan, yeah they do… but only against the kings if you remember that call on doughty a month ago. That was the only dive I’ve seen called in at least the last year.

I hate whining about refs, but I was pretty surprised that there was no call on the Zeus play. And then the Canucks dude completely turns his back on Clifford when he knows Clifford is coming in for a check, and WE get a major. Clifford hardly touched him and it looks like he lost his edge. How is the play on Zeus not a major (Zues getting checked without the puck) and Clifford’s play a major? The refs effeectively take the game out of the players’ hands.

@jdm1977, It had to do with Cliffords follow thru and smush of VAN player’s head into the boards.

Just never got going after that last second goal in the second. I guess we do miss Kopi and Williams. We played ok with a lot of heart, just didn’t have enough. #8 overplayed and outplayed all game. He still has some growing up to do. Kings get 0 shots on goal in the third. We’ll have more fire come Saturday. Sharks are blanking the Stars, so this loss doesn’t hurt as much. I want us to win every game, but reality says NO. Like it or not tomorrow will be better. This club has a lot of fight they just need to calm Drew Down. He had a bad game, shake it off and come out better next time. These Canucks are good, but they are beatable. I think any team in the West can beat them. How great it would be to see them lose in the playoffs after winning the Presidents Trophyp. I know that’s harsh but The Canucks piss me off. Look a likes drive me crazy. Twins huh!!! Zues got nailed, no call…… One last thing, where is Penner? Has anyone seen him? If ever we need someone to step up it would be now. I just didn’t want to listen to you Peeps. Most of you said the guy was soft and goes MIA at times. Time to show up Penner. Yes I’m getting on his back. We pick him up, put him on a team who by the way is fighting for something, move him back home to where his wife lives, and what do we get in return… Missing In Action.. Now that I’m getting more mad, What about Simmer. Lost in Space. We all have to pick our game up. I love these guys, well maybe not Penner, we bearly know him. I just want them to win. To many drinks for me. Good Night.

I absolutely hate the call against Clifford for one reason; the offensive player put himself in that situation!!! Clifford felt that the Canucks player was going to handle the puck and go to the left, and Clifford had the player lined up for a clean hit….right as Clifford goes for the hit, the Canucks player turns the other way, loses his balance and Clifford hits him in the numbers….this league is becoming soft, very similar to the NFL. When players are affraid to play the game at top speed and by using their instincts, then the game becomes watered down….I really worry this is happening in the NHL.

The Sedins are the dirtiest playes I’ve seen since Barnaby. Kessler is nothing but a big whiner, and the refs do nothing but let certain teams and players do what they want while penalizing good, tough hockey. It’s horrible to see what Bettman has and his gang of blind men have done to this game.

  24. thustable says:

If any of you watched the game, I’m pretty sure it was the violence of Clifford’s hit with the smashing of his head into the boards. The hit on Zus was borderline interference, the puck was very close. Neither had anything to do with with Doughty’s turnovers (doing it all season long) and ZERO shots on goal in 3rd. VAN, like it or not, is faster and they have great patience and chemistry. We have major players injured, I expect playoffs and thats it (just pleeeez don’t lose to the Ducks in the playoffs).
