The view from Edmonton

The good folks of Edmonton still turn out in large numbers — last night’s announced crowd of 16,839 appeared to be an accurate count — to watch some rough results. The Oilers are now 0-7-3 in their last 10, nave been shut out three times during that span and scored one goal in four other games. It’s a young team with injuries, so things will get brighter, but last night’s game represented two major points for the Kings, who remained in fifth place and saw both sixth-place Nashville and eighth-place Chicago lose in regulation. Fourth-place Phoenix beat ninth-place Dallas in a shootout. Here’s a sampling of how last night’s Kings-Oilers game was covered by the Edmonton media…

    “Former Oiler Jarret Stoll is one goal shy of joining five of his teammates in the 20-goal club, although Kopitar (ankle) and Williams (shoulder) are sidelined with injuries. The last time Los Angeles had six 20-goal scorers in one season was 1992-93.”

    Let’s keep it going!

    Just remember, stick check before each game. Don’t give the officials another shot at derailing us.

    1. I thinke we are Vancouver’s “trap” game.

    2. If healthy all year, our number one line right now could be Parse, Kopitar, Williams. Ironic isn’t it?

    @Howe 9,

    I made the call on the trap game last night, and I think it’ll hold up. The Kings are 2-6 in the last 8 games in VAN, but the Kings have won 2 of the last 3 in the overall series. The recent numbers for these two teams are very similar, but the PK units are poised to make the difference tomorrow.

    @Howe 9, I dont think the Canucks have any more ‘trap’ games as they really don’t need to win any more games the rest of the season; they’re the #1 seed. They won’t be ‘up’ for the Kings, but I dont really think they’ll be up for anyone now. They will just win on talent, not desire.

    And in case my sound was not working properly, I did not hear any boos for Penner. Not that he would have deserved them in ANY way, but TSN certainly seemed to be expecting them. A little class from Oil town this time around was nice to see.

    @OttoKing, Oiler fans appear to be good hockey fans. Their team is having a bad “rebuilding year” like the Kings had a a few years back, but they still come out in droves to support them. I like that. Props to them.

    Props to Oilers fans for coming out and supporting their team despite the Oilers being terrible this year. This was a good game for the Kings to adjust to life without Kopi, now it’s time to bring it to the Canucks!

    I would say that in light of how they played, the new #1 line has to be Smyth-Lewis-Brown. They were outstanding all night. Lewis did a pretty good impression of Kopitar on that steal and feed to Brown for his second goal, and I thought Ryan Smyth got back to being his slippery self over the last two games. Bernier was excellent again last night. He’s put his early season issues to bed, and has started to look like the guy the Kings thought he would be. What a great pair of goaltenders this team has!

    Now it’s time for Penner to get on track. Joining a team in mid-stream can be difficult, but there’s a LOT of room to improve. Pick it up, Pens! You’re going to be needed, especially against the Canucks.

    @KingMe20, So nice not to cringe every time a shot is taken. I still have flashbacks to the days of La Babs, Garon & Clouts (one could go back a lot further) not making any critical saves at anytime throughout an entire season. Thank you DL for providing this team with quality goalies.

    I was very impressed by the play of Lewis last night. He’s always solid when in the lineup, but the way he stepped up was great to see!

    From “Oilers blanked by Kings:”

    “As for Penner, it was the same game we saw out of him as an Oiler for four years. He wasn’t bad, but didn’t do anything that really made him stand out.”
