@mcsorleyfan,
Agreed – he was also digging in the corners as well, the few times where he got outmuscled were against players who would outmuscle 75% of the other players in the NHL
Also maybe it’s just me and I was observing too well, but it really seems like the last 5-7 games Simmer looks like the player from last year, a lot of fight, energy, and puck control in the corners

Scary when someone actually takes a ontimer from the slot on the power play instead of tapping it back to the passer.
Brown was a beast tonight.
Moller is fast. Very slick.
Poni has slowly become a force out there.
7 strait goals on the shoot out for Stoll. Seeing as how we lead the league in SO wins, I say Stolls value is highly underestimated. Especially considering he’s in the top 10 in the NHL in faceoffs win%. He’s having a career year offensively and yet most Kingsfans can’t stand him. Go figure.

@Dominick, Don’t count me as one of those. I think Stoll is a great player, underated for sure, still among one of the best kings players. You can always count on that guy night after night.
[Reply]
That was a crazy game..especially the last 5 minutes.
Imagine playing these guys in a 7 game series…talk about intensity…
Brownie was the true hereo last night. He led by example. same thing with Greene on D. Fox said it right last night. This is the best hockey Greene’s played in his career. He’s been a monster in front of his own net and takes guys out of the play completely.
I loved the effort Moller gave last night. Right from his first shift, he was flying. Man, if he can keep that going the rest of the way, we have a dangerous top 6 come playoff time..I’d like to see a lot more from Penner, but that’s knit-picking.
I thought Smytty had an effective game. He hasn’t played well for a while now. I thought last night he was involved in the play a lot more and making some plays. He needs a goal desperately.
I couldn’t find any weakness on our blueline last night at all. I love Martinez on the PP. He’s so decisive with his shot. You never see any hesitation. He also played terrific defensively. Doughty played a great game as well. Big goal by Mitchell..shot mentality worked.
Last..Quick may have let in a real softie with about 5 min to go, but he played unbelievable. He made stops I haven’t seen many goalies make ever. What flexibility and what steely nerves he has. A lot of goalies would have tanked after that goal..not Quick. The guy’s a stud.
Sorry for being so long..anyone get the idea I’m excited about this team? lol

Can anyone explIn how the NHL came up withe the decision not to count shootout wins in the case of a tie? So OT and shootout losses count but wins don’t? How does that make sense? So if the Sharks and Kings are tied at the end of the year, their loss last night is more valuable then the Kings win?

@Ten for instigating, I agree with you, it makes no sense at all. A win is a win, why should a team ever be penalized for a win?

@Ten for instigating, The NHL, in their infinite wisdom, decided that teams would try harder to win in the overtime (which is total crap!) if the SO wins did not count in a tie breaker. However, all the GM’s agreed it so you can’t really blame the NHL management. They proposed it and the GM’s approved it.

@Ten for instigating, The GM’s voted on it last year, and Lombardi actually voted for it.
I personally have no problem with it. It’s a gimmick. Shootout wins, to me, aren’t real wins. It’s a one on one competition for the fans, not the game.
If I had my way, OT would be 4 on 4 for 20 minutes, and if there was no winner, the game ends in a tie. Winner gets 2 points, loser gets NOTHING.
It’s sports…rewarding a losing team for losing is stupid.

@Ten for instigating, Regulation wins,of which we only have 33 is the tie breaker ahead of head to head.So if I’m understanding it right we could dominate HSH head to head but if we end up tied w/them in points they’ll get the higher seeding if we don’t at least catch them in ROW to make our head to head matter…THAT’S the joke of it.3 or more teams tied in ROW I can understand but when it get’s down to 2 teams H to H should kick in.

Not happy that we gave the Guppies a point, but very happy that we got 2 points. Quick looked amazing on the most dangerous shots, but that one goal from the outside circle indicates he still has a problem with those bad angle shots. He was incredible on the shootout, but I noticed that the last 3 SJ shooters all did the same thing, trying to go to his blocker side. That was oneof his weaknesses last year, but he appears to have taken care of that. If Quick can staty hot, our PK continues at its current rate and our PP finds some consistency (yes, it did look alot netter last night!), then we have a real good shot this year, no matter where we end up inthe Conference standings.

Kopi needing more offense? I guess unless he’s the #1 scorer in the NHL, it won’t be good enough for you.
Penner? How about he bring something to the table. Don’t know if you’ve noticed the last 2 games he’s been pretty much invisible..This was something that the people in Edmonton were talking about..taking games off!
TM’s coaching? Check the standings the last 2 seasons. and also how about giving credit to the Sharks for coming at the Kings with everything they had in the 3rd? We weren’t “sitting” on any lead. San Jose’s a great team..give credit where credit’s due.
JJ? He had a real good defensive game last night…watch it again!
Smyth? Also had a very good game last night..the goals will come with that type of effort.
You need to give credit to the opposition sometimes…In the end we came away with the 2 points which is all that really matters, but we weren’t playing a patsie last night.

I love kop but what i meant was he needs to be a little more selfish, specially on the power play. I really fell bad for him having to play for TM, all our forwards for that matter. Smyth’s effort is there, just think 6 mil next year will hurt us more than he will help. Chi won last year with average D and and average goaltending. So enough with D wins cups. Last team to win a cup with just D was NJ like 10 years ago and different set of rules. I dont think penner played bad. I think penner’s success is important cuz nobody wants to play here anyway, throw in the fack that we try to win every game 2-1 makes it even harder to atract free agents. No forward will be able to live up to their contract thanks to TM offense. Thats how I see it u dont have to agree with me. And as far as the standing go, we r a good team, I can coach this team to 30 wins and know nothing about hockey x’s & o’s. Get a real coach and he’ll get us to 50 wins.

@Pesus,
I understnad what you’re saying about Kopi and shooting the puck, but your ridiculous comment about feeling bad for him because he plays for TM is nothing short of comical. The guy’s become one of the best 2 way centers in the NHL..who do you think gets credit for that?
D does win cups..if not, washington would have won several cups over the past few seasons…Chicago didn’t have average D..not by a long shot. Niemi’s a good goalie, I wouldn’t call him elite, but Chicago’s D and the forwards attention to their D responsibility is why they won the cup.
Free agents are attracted to $$ and winning. They don’t care if the team wins every game 1-0 it’s all about chasing the cup. FA’s haven’t come to LA because the Kings have sucked for such a long period of time..Things have certainly changed over the past couple of seasons. Smytty waives his NTC to come to the Kings. Penner agrees to come to the Kings.
JJ signs a long term deal for less $$ than he could probably get on the open market.
Just to humor me..please let me know the last time a player publicly (or even rumored) said he wants out of LA and if that occured during TM’s reign? Don’t use Fro because he would have come back..the Kings didn’t want him at the price he was asking for.
As far as coaching this team yourself, or getting a “real coach” give me an example of a real coach who could have taken a franchise that a few years ago was picking #2 overall to being a playoff team for the past 2 seasons?
50 wins, ha? Which coach is that?
Pesus Reply:

@Pesus, We have enoughguys playing D, kopi is a 100 point player on any another team. Kop is a great to way player cuz of TM. But we need him to score not be another zues. Let zues be the shut down center. I feel he wastes to much energy in the D zone taking away from his offence. I know U know I cant coach this team,I just think TM has maxed out as far as what he can do for us. I hoped to god Im wrong. I hope u and I r downtown at a parade soon. And u are right about the things changing around here about players wanting to play for us. Maybe I think this team is better than they r. I see Cal give up 6 goals, them look great against us, then give up 4 more 1st peroid goals to the sharks. Thats what I dont get.

Wait a minute, are you insinuatong that Toronoto made a mistake? Please, Toronto is the home of the hockey gods and the paragon of NHL virtue. They would never miss a call or incorrectly review a replay. Just ask DL and TM and they will extol upon the professionalism and review capabilities of the Toronto staff. The fact that they ripped us off for at least 4 points in the standings should not indicate that there are issuses in Toronto. Just forget that those 4 points would position us in 4th place in the Conference standings and only 1 point behind our division leader. We should all be excoriated for even thinking of using replay to show that the replay experts flubbed a replay review! That being said, GKG and do not allow our fate to be decided by useless officials in Toronto acting upon subpar calls from blind referees whose whistles are are stuck in their pockets and feel it is improper to work as a team with the other on-ice officials (and if the NHL is reading this, sorry, I don’t have $50k, I spent it at Staples Center). @DesertKing, are u counting the G that was allowed to stand @PHX when ATL was in there in FEB?Not quite as bad as the play in LA but any stretch of logic disallows that G the same way Smyths was disallowed in OTT.Calls gonna stand close to 100% of the time.Bad on ice decisions confirmed by people that presumably know the rules but don’t give 1 iota about them.

@Stuart, As stated in the Murray interview, “That was just a conversation. It was not a review. It’s the discretion of the referee to review it.” I don’t think Toronto had a say. That being said, I have to agree with the DesertKing in his opinions on Toronto. In fact, I feel that there is not even a debate on this. Their decisions have been terrible, and not just against the Kings.

@mike morbid,
How many games has Stolly won for us in the shootout this year? Between his timely shootout goals, and Quicks timely shootout saves, I love it when we get to a shootout. Just because I know it would benefit us, I wish there was a shootout in the playoffs ( well, I guess not really, but it would be a huge advantage for us… ).

“The second goal was a play that me and Zeus have been working on” ……. Brown’s comment after the game kinda sums up why I don’t like too many line changes. Great game by the entire lineup tonight, which is what we need every night. Really like our fourth line when Westy isn’t out there. I think as soon as Lewis gets one or two goals the flood gate will open and we will have another 25 goal scorer on our lineup ( well, next year anyway ). Now, no let-up. Keep your foot on the throat of the western conference and finish strong. Pacific division title would sure be a nice start.

In the SO the biggest question was did Quick tip the puck on that move by Boyle. If he did then the play is dead after the offensive player plays it again, it’s considered a rebound. And I believe he did tip the puck clearly shown on replay. That is what the Kings were questioning.

Moller did great in that game, some good quickness, aggressive drives toward the net, putting the puck toward the Goal. I hope he builds confidence from this game and gets better and better.
One key I thought was getting the Sharks to get into the penalty box – we really got under their skin, Clowe especially, he took some bad penalties. The Fish had as many penalties in this game than they had in their previous 4 games. Whatever we did – let’s keep it going and don’t have a let down with the ‘Lanche and Oilers – we need all 4 of those points.

Thoughts…
Will everyone PLEASE shutup already about Dustin Brown? He has proven he is a consistent 25 goal scorer in the NHL. He most likely isn’t anything more, and that is fine.
Matt Greene was outstanding last night. In fact, he really has stepped up his game in the last couple of months.
Oscar Moller. I don’t know what he did down in Manchester, but I’m happy to say he has taken to heart whatever Management said to him, and he came back up with a real fire under him. I was quite pleased with his play last night.
Penner. I said it when there were the rumors. I said it when they did the trade. I’m saying it now. I don’t and didn’t want him, and he’s showing why. He may be the softest 250lb. man I have ever seen in my life. GO TO THE NET, HARD…good God man! Now he’s actually HURTING Kopitar. Can he even receive a pass? It’s like his stick is a brick.

@mrbrett7, I agree his pay hasn’t been 100%. However, wasn’t that pass/break off the boards to Moller from Penner?
I think his play was “okay” last night. I think he can play better…
As far as lil #9. Hope he proves me wrong, but I don’t think he’s gonna “stay hot” for long…
You forgot to mention, Stoll… Sniper in the shootout.
Zues has had some solid plays to keep us in these last few games.

@KingsGuy, I may be wrong, but I don’t think so. I think the pass was intended for Penner, and per usual, he was slow getting to the puck, and Moller scooted right around him, picked up the puck, and went into the zone and got off a great shot on a grade A scoring chance.
I don’t even think I’ve seen Penner in front of the net, once.
How is this man even being knocked down? I don’t fall down that much, and he outweighs me by 60+ pounds!

@KingsGuy, As for the others…
Stoll, I’ve always liked him. I think people try to make him into something he isn’t. IF Schenn can take that #2 center position, and let Stoll be the #3 center, THAT is where he belongs in reality. Right now, he’s really playing out of position (or role if you will).
Moller, he showed something different last night. He’s always been a bit fearless, to a fault. He’s always had the ability to get off shots from wherever, and he has always had great ice vision…but last night, he looked greatly improved in one aspect of his game that he really needed to improve upon.
Small players all have on thing in common. They turn their detriment (size) into an advantage. How did he get such a wide open shot coming down the wing? Speed? That helped, but that wasn’t the real reason…the Sharks defense never even saw him. He snuck in behind Penner, and all of a sudden, there he was…the Sharks defense had to “react”. That’s how smallish players can succeed…forcing the defense to react to them. That’s the firs time I’ve ever seen him do something like this…I want to see more of it.

@mrbrett7, wow! My complaints still stand about DB. Yes he had a moster game on the forecheck and obviously scoring two goals and getting the SO tally, but there were numerous, and when I say numerous I mean lik 4-6 times (once for sure on our PP) where he lost pucks on a rush, killed good chances with bad passes into skates, shanked pass attempts. There was that 3-1 he coughed up after allowing the lone D man to close on him… As I said in another earlier thread, I’ll overlook the terrible handles tonight bd we got the 2 pts. But the DB talk will never stop until the man can make a pass to save his teamates life!
And about DP, I thought he played well last night, too. He knocked a couple of people over, I thought I saw him moving the puck around, he had a couple of chances in the slot early… No complaints anywhere about last nights game.

DB probably will never be a great passer……oh well!!!
He brings so much to this team and absolutely doesn’t deserve the negativity that some (you) ALWAYS toss at him here. I have nothing more to say about this because DB has said it for himself with his play, attitude and loyalty to the Kings organIzation since day 1!!!

@Shotongoal, Oh well? How about practicing that aspect and becoming a complete player? Everyone here complains about TM making excuses or taking it soft on our guys when they don’t perform, but I guess it’s all good to “overlook” a glaring weakness/inefficiency in our captains…
read the next part in Mr. Hands voice as he recites his list of “I don’t know”‘s to Spicoli:
Gas is expensive – oh well
radiation might hurt us – oh well
got bounced out the 1st round – oh well
can’t maintain puck possession on 3-1s – oh well
Yeah, I like this “oh well”
If DB grew some handles he might be HOF material. but OH WELL

@Stuart, You definately got an agenda with Brown, why I don’t know, but its obvious. Brown was the best player on the ice for either team. And I’m someone who has also been pretty critical of Brown myself. He really stunk it up at the end of the regular season last year. Brown has been a much better player this year and is playing some of his best hockey right now when it counts most.

@Stuart, It’s very simple. He’s not a puckrusher. He’s a power foward…I don’t give two poops in a toilet if he turns the puck over in the OFFENSIVE zone 800 times a night. I do care if he doesn’t play his game.
His game is to score goals, hit and play defense. He does all three quite well. His game is NOT to rush the puck, stick handle, etc. Yet he does try this when he has no other choice, from what I see.
If your expecting a 40+ goal scorer and 80+ point producer, you need to temper your expectations.
As for Penner. He is awful. Can’t hold onto the puck. Can’t pass. Can’t shoot in less than 5 seconds. Can’t play defense. Can he do anything????

@mrbrett7, Yup…oh well. As long as they are there and not in front of our net, I have no problem with them.
Turnovers from trying to make something happen in the OFFENSIVE zone, no coach will ever be angry with, especially if those turnovers are going forward (cough, cough…Smyth, Kopitar, Doughty, Johnson)…
Every player excels at certain things, and every player struggles with certain things.
I guess you hate Brendan Morrow as well. He’s a turnover machine.
Shane Doan
Cam Neeley
All similar players to Brown’s style, and guess what…none of them can complete a stick to stick pass.

That was a different Oscar Moller last night.
Even his voice sounded deeper.
Dude was winning puck battles, checking guys consistently, challenging puck carriers, opening up space for Kopi a few times, Lots of speed, really focused play. Oscar really brought it last night and got rewarded with an assist. He should have had a goal as well but Niemi was pretty sick last night.
This Oscar Moller should stay! I was really impressed and stoked for him. I think he has found his game. The only thing left for him to do is to do it consistently.
…and I do agree that Penner was slow and ineffective last night. It should be Kopi’s job to chirp at him on the bench, being an Assistant Captain and all (And a linemate), to tell him to pick it up. Big bodies are great. THey aren’t worth much if they’re not skating though. If Penner played like Moller did tonight, that line would have utterly DOMINATED.
There’s always next game. 2 points is 2 points.
