Tuesday practice update; Williams’ status

Justin Williams is expected to miss 3-4 weeks because of his shoulder injury, so theoretically he could return during the playoffs if things went well for him and the team. Terry Murray did not discuss Oscar Moller or his potential role, since Moller has not officially been called up (until paperwork is completed).

In surprising news, Scott Parse skated for approximately 10 minutes, in his first time back on the ice, but Parse said he’s not 100 percent. More notes and quotes to come…

    Well I don’t know if anyone else has notice this disturbing view, that is the Kings #3 chasing a forward after they have gotten behind him for a scoring chance?

    Be in in the third period when we are up by a goal, or in the first two after ANOTHER attempted pinch when the other teams scores are on the ice….like Oli Jockenen!

    When will #3 start to use his head, instead of his talent? When he starts combining both we will have a true one/two punch like few others in the NHL.

    Till then we have a hit and miss situation with Mr. 3.

    @centericeman,

    Little talk about that giant blunder. How does Jokinen get behind the defense in that situation? I couldn’t believe my eyes. JJ is still trying to do too much at the wrong time. I’d like to have a quote about that play, but I haven’t found any.

    [Reply]

    Stuart Reply:

    @wavesinair, I know JJ was the last man back, but there were two other forwards that tried to cheat to the wall and lost track of any assignments… Ultimately JJ looks the worst bc he was the one floundering as OJ skated past him, but it wasn’t his mistake alone. All 3 of them ASSumed that it was going to be a play up the boards.

    Not defending the blown assignment, just saying what I saw…

    [Reply]

    wavesinair Reply:

    @Stuart,

    So was JJ trying to get off the ice and got left out to dry? Hard to tell from the replay they showed. If true, as the old adage goes defensemen, “never trust a forward.”

    mrbrett7 Reply:

    @Stuart, EXACTLY!!!

    No Waves, he wasn’t. JJ was covering his man, Calgary’s LW over in on that side of the ice. By the time he even saw Jokinen, it was too late.

    Cynic Reply:

    @wavesinair, Actually Waves, I don’t put that all on JJ. Remember the replay? The 2 forwards in the middle went to the boards as well, openini up center ice for that pass. JJ is supposed to cover the 1/2 wall for the pass down the boards. A forward is supposed to stay in the middle to cover that type of pass. JJ saw the pass coming, but couldn’t get back in time. He should have been in a deeper position but that happens. The forwards who both went to the boards are more to blame than JJ here. One should have stayed in the middle to discourage the pass up center ice.

    JJ is an easy target though. He does overcompensate a lot. He is improving but it’s gonna hurt once in a while until he does.

    [Reply]

    wavesinair Reply:

    @Cynic,

    Yeah, mrbrett said basically the same thing. It was a failure on 3 levels. It amazes me how that breakdown occurs at that time though. There’s no good time for it, but certainly there are worse times and that was one of them. And it’s been an epidemic this season with equalizers within a few minutes.

    Mike C Reply:

    @centericeman,

    Yea, I was particulary disturbed by the play. We had 5 minutes to win the game outright. Steve Staios had a good look and Calgary had obvious control of the puck — time to make sure a breakaway doesn’t happen. Inexcusable.

    @Dan H.,

    Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t it Mitchell coming on the ice and JJ was already on the ice? Murray said in the post game presser that it’s a simple play that can’t be allowed to happen. That the D in that position has to play to the center of the ice. Not sure if that was JJ’s assignment, but it looked like it. I don’t have a replay to see it though.

    [Reply]

    mrbrett7 Reply:

    @wavesinair, You are correct. But, your also wrong. Watch the replay.

    Handzus was on vaction along the wall on the far right hand side. Smyth joined him for a day in the sun. Meanwhile, Jokinen was at top speed, and before anyone even saw him, he was past those two, leaving 1 defenseman to cover 2 Flames…and Johnson chose the wrong guy.

    bbb7 Reply:

    @wavesinair, Yes, JJ was on the ice and at his position but he drifted towards the left wall (away from the benches) and Ollie crossed over in front of him. It just seems JJ wasnt aware enough of how little support he had to the center of the ice.

    Dave Reply:

    @Dan H., i didn’t notice that but if that’s the case i would be happy to hear. last night was the first game in a while that i noticed him not play well. his +/- has gone down quite a bit recently but it’s hard to blame him on most of them. for example, he was on the ice for the Perry OT goal but you can’t blame him for that.

    [Reply]

    BobKnob Reply:

    @centericeman,

    I missed this quote about the play from an earlier thread…

    MURRAY: “That was a line change. That’s just against one of the fundamentals that we have in place with this hockey club. We just stretched out, we got spread out. On a line change, you’re supposed to stay nice and tight, compact in the middle of the ice. Jokinen comes from deep in the right-defenseman corner, with a lot of speed. It’s a play that we’ve got to make. That’s all there is to it. It should not come down to a 1-on-1 look like that, unfortunately.”

    Murray went on to say, “The bottom line is it’s just a line change. It’s a simple, fundamental drill that we’ve executed from the first day of year one of training camp and we got spread out. You’re supposed to be nice and tight.”

    [Reply]

    mrbrett7 Reply:

    @centericeman, I’m only going to say this once. Handzus’s responsibility is to choke off center ice, and he didn’t. Smyth’s responsibility is to not even let the pass happen, and he did.

    Johnson’s responsibility is to not let Jokinen get behind him, and he did.

    Hockey is a TEAM GAME, AND THE TEAM FAILED.

    For the love of God, please stop blaming ONE GUY FOR ONE GOAL.

    Dave Reply:

    @KH, there’s got to come a time when TM just goes with what he thinks are his best lines and hope his players perform. looking for that magical combination with 10 games left is not going to cut it.

    put Moller on the top line to replace Williams, Poni/Handzus/Simmonds back together as that is a hard line to play against. and put smyth/stoll/brown together as they all are 20 goal guys. then let clifford/lewis/richie play scrappy and bring energy.

    [Reply]

    Deke'r Reply:

    @KH, I also think Cliffy will be on the 4th line, Smitty on 3rd, Simmers on first, Brownie to 2nd and Oscar to 3rd.

    [Reply]

    mrbrett7 Reply:

    @KH, I’m not going to argue with these lines.

    Everyone complains about all the line changing, but the one thing you do get out of them is the ability for all the players to play with anyone. It does help from time to time (especially when you have a team like this searching for an offensive identity).

    Anyway, IF it were me:

    Penner/Kopitar/Brown
    Smyth/Stoll/Moller
    Poni/Handzus/Simmonds
    Clifford/Lewis/Richardson

    I would love to see Smyth get a day off, but, if you move him down, he can’t be paird with Handzus. Love the guy, but that is two of the slowest skaters in the NHL, both on the same line, together. Not to mention that Handzus’s line will draw the most difficult defensive responsibility on most occassions, and I don’t want Smyth anywhere near that.

    I also know the hate for Brown around here is out of control, but, the most productive time both he and Kopitar have had this season were when they were playing on the same line, TOGETHER. It’s really not that hard.

    [Reply]

    CB14 Reply:

    @mrbrett7, Absolutely agree about Brown and Kopi being together on the 1st line. They were missing a 1st line LW the whole year, now we’ve got one so give them a chance together. Or, sound so desperate that you hope Parse or Moller, or whoever is going to save the season because a top 6 winger got hurt? I’m sorry, yes its a bummer that JW got hurt, he’s a big part of this teams success this season, it sucks, but I am not going to sit here and think that this season is over now because of an injury. I would like to believe that if this team is for real and they have the desire, then they will overcome this and still be successful. They would not be the first team to have an injury to a key player and still not have success. See VAN Malhotra, see CHI Sharp, see PITT Crosby and Malkin. I’m sure these teams’ fans think all those injuries suck too, but I bet they don’t think their teams seasons are over.
