The Kings concluded their three-game “Legends Night” series last night, with a nice tribute to former player and coach Bob Pulford. It seems that the vintage purple-and-gold jerseys will go into mothballs for a while now. This has been a very poorly kept secret, but the Kings are likely to change their primary uniforms next season. The current third jersey — the black jersey with the “LA” logo — is scheduled to become the full-time home jersey, while a newly created white version of that jersey would become the full-time road jersey. The current home jersey, the black-and-purple jersey with the crown logo, would become the third jersey. Is that confusing enough?
Based on feedback I’ve seen, the vintage jerseys seemed to be well-received. What do you think? What would you like to see the Kings wear at home primarily?

I think the coolest Kings jersey ever is the current away White/Purple. I still love the 1980′s yellow and purple. I absolutely can’t stand the “BLACK” Kings look. It’s low brow and classless. Great, the gangsta’ Kings look is back! I really hate the BLACK look! Keep the current away jerseys and revert back to yellow/purple at home. The Kings are making a mistake! The only people that will be wearing the gangsta’ hood jerseys will be the gangsta’s. Who wants to wear the “NEW” in thing in gang apparel around LA? Going to the black 3rd jersey as the primary one will just be more fodder for other fans (mostly Ducks fans) to call us the new Raider Nation of LA (until the new football team comes anyway). I really like our current ones and I think the purple/black color scheme is sweet. The current road jerseys are really cool too. @YoBro, it was changed BACK to dark at home because most teams third jerseys are dark team colors which forced equipment managers to carry 2 sets of jerseys and equipment depending on the color or jersey the other team was wearing on that night, so hence the change so it was easier, plus dark totally makes sense that the home team gets to wear their colors not white

but when the home jerseys were white, the 3rd jerseys were dark. When the home jerseys switched to black, the 3rd jerseys are still dark. Why not change the 3rds to white?

The current third jersey is so unimaginative and colorless. The logo is bland and ugly. I have no idea why the organization would make those the primary jerseys. Half of the teams in the NHL have black as a primary color. Forum blue and gold is unique. No other team has that color scheme. Teams like the Sabres, Islanders, Oilers, Flames, and Capitals all are going back to their retro designs, and those uniforms look great! They remind me of the old days of hockey. The Kings should do the same. They should go back to their original uniforms, the vintage forum blue and gold! I am so jealous of teams like the original six or even the Flyers and Blues who have never changed their logos and colors. When you see those uniforms, you automatically know what team and city they are from. We need to go back to our original uniforms FULL TIME to pay tribute to the history of this organization. Purple is unique to the Kings, why not keep it as the primary color. Half the NHL teams have black home jerseys. I liked the purple jerseys from the early 2000s. The Monarchs actually have better unis then the Kings. Anything but the black and white homeplate.

I weighed in on this last week, so sorry jonesy but I got to disagree with your comments about the “original” Kings colors! There’s nothing “popcorn ceiling” about it….just history!
I would like to see the purple and gold jersey as the home jersey, with an added intertwined “LA” similar to the Dodgers, but in old english script,shoulder patch. A white jersey with purple and gold trimming with “Los Angeles” in old english script across the front, similar to the Rangers’ blues, with the crown shoulder patch. For an alternate home jersey, I would like to see a gold jersey with the lace collar with white and purple trim with the crown in the center, designed similar to the Canadiens red home jersey.
Its time to go back to the beginnning and have some tradition with the Kings, they have done it this year by honoring legends, and there are way too many teams with black in their jersey designs. Tradition is a good thing, just look at the past season championships….Blackhawks vs Flyers (The Kings came into the league the same year as the Flyers. How man times have the Flyers changed their colors or design….exactly!!), Lakers (yes purple and gold-original) vs Celtics, Packers vs Steelers….
Of course this is a waste of time because I’m sure the die has already been cast!!

Ok, this is probably not the best topic under which to post, but I went to the Ottawa 67s game this afternoon and wanted to report my findings to the forum folks upon whom I’ve come to depend (and respect). The 67s were playing the Sudbury Wolves (I grew up near Sudbury, so I was a little biased to start with), which I think is a 1st round OHL playoff match-up. Anyway, I came hoping to see Tyler Toffoli kicks some serious ass. Things were not necessarily going well after the first, and I just wanted to see him score a goal. Ottawa was dominating them (although that Sudbury team was pretty punchy throughout) but Toffoli hadn’t figured on the scoresheet. Then, all of a sudden, it became rather clear how he got to the top of the OHL leader board. Toffoli ended up scoring 4 (!) goals en route to finishing tied for the OHL scoring title on the last day of the season (57 goals in 68 games — first in goals scored)! Kid looked solid, especially on the PP. I’d love to see him work out for LA in the big time. GO KINGS GO!! (I’ll try to post game video when I can figure out how to make the Blackberry video transfer properly to my computer/website).

Not as the main focus of the uniforms. I don’t mean to knock tradition.
Those are the colors the Kings wore when I first started following them. Personally I never liked that color scheme. Going back to those colors is pointless, because this team has it’s own identity now.
When you think of Gretzky with the Kings, you don’t think purple and gold, you think black, white, and silver. Concentrate on where their identity is now. Should be trying to build on that, instead of starting over.
They could wear Pink, and I’d still love this team, but I wouldn’t be happy about it. Same thing with the vintage colors.

It is clear that the purple and gold jerseys are superior and should be the number one choice. These are the truest representation of the franchise. Any other choice represents a lack of confidence in the LA Kings brand. To offer other options is merely an expression of a lack of confidence in what in means to be an LA King. For example, no member of the Habs community would ever accept anything but the blanc/bleu/rouge. From my point of view, embracing the regal purple and gold means a serious run at the cup.

Players in Detroit, Montreal, Philly, Chicago, New York, have always said wearing that same sweater they grew up watching “the greats” wear really feels like an honor. Those teams have all won multiple cups, so I’m sure that has more to do with establishing a tradition of winning than some logo… But I like the idea of current players trying to measure up to Dionne, Gretzky, Robitaille, Hrudey, Taylor, Vachon, and others. It’s a standard… Unfortunately, we don’t give our players that opportunity because the uniforms get an overhaul every 5 years… I don’t mind having a third jersey at all. But PLEASE pick a primary uniform and stick with it!
I love the uniforms we have now. I vote to donate the current third jerseys to the Galaxy -seriously, they look like soccer warm-ups- and do what the rest of the league does, having “retro nights” with throw back jerseys. Alternating the forum blue and gold with the Gretzky era uniforms every other year.

I have a Forum Blue/Gold jersey, a Gretzky era Chevron home and away version, I have Shield home and away version, I have Crown home and away version and I have a current 3rd jersey.
So I ask…If this is about making a little profit wouldn’t it make more sense to just create a whole new logo/look?
Personally, I am tired of all the changes most organizations are making year in and year out to their logos and jerseys. I think our organization should be known by one logo and color scheme. In sports, history is built by two things in my opinion. Winning and stability…not change (except for rosters of course)!

I hate the current black 3rd jerseys, and would hate to see those become the regular home jerseys! The LA logo is totally cheesy. For that matter, the font that it’s from, that is the current typeface for the Kings, is quite lame. I wouldn’t mind if they used the crown from the vintage purple and gold jerseys, but used the black, white, and gray scheme from the Gretzky days, to create a new jersey all together. That might be a cool tie-in with different eras.

Current ones are better than the 3rd or the throwback ones in my opinion. Though I wouldn’t mind the black (current 3rd) jerseys if they just kept the crown logo instead of that silly little upside-down house. And I like the royal purple, mix some in with the black at least.
The throwback ones are a novelty item, they don’t look bad, but wouldn’t care for them as full-time jerseys at all.

I love the change. The current crown we have doesn’t even look like a crown. It looks like some robot face from the future. Everyone talking about the Red Wings and Canadiens…. you know why their jerseys work? Cause they’re simple… and that’s what our third jersey is. Beautiful in its simplicity. All the logos connected to this purple and black era are ridiculously busy and over-thought. And don’t even get me started on that ridiculous “Los Angeles” script on the bottom.
The only problem I have with this announcement is that the vintage purple and golds wont be our thirds. It would make it an almost perfect jersey set.

I LOVE the black jerseys. I´ve been trying to get hold of one since they came out, but it is not easy to get one here in Sweden without order directly from the Kings shop which is pretty expensive.

Turning the current thirds into our primary jerseys is a fantastic idea. I can’t wait to see how the white ones look.

ANY Kings jersey I think should only have a crown on the chest. Make the logo whatever you want and put it on the shoulder but since the Kings went back to just a crown, makes it unique.
The vintage purple jerseys with the classic crown should be next year’s 3rd jersey.

Agreed about the Ducks skill level. Did you know that Dave Taylor had two chances to get Corey Perry but decided to take a pass on him in favor of Jeff Tambellini (27th overall) and Brian Boyle (28th overall) then the Ducks took Perry 29th!! Incredible isn’t it. I still never forget that.

I’d like to see a new jersey using the forum blue color instead of black, with a newly designed Gold Crown on it. The letters and numbers could be gold too, but with a heavy outline of black. The road jerseys could be white gold and black. I’ve never liked the current crown logo, I think it looks rather whimpy, or childish somehow. We definately need a new Crown logo, and get back to the original forum blue and gold.

I am a huge fan of the Forum Blue and Gold. I attribute that to the fact they are the colors LA wore when I became a Kings fan and the fact I honestly like them the best.
I am not opposed to the current third becoming the home and a white version of it as the road. I AM opposed to the current home as the third.
If they won’t use the current vintage jersey as our alternate then I would actually like to see a entirely new 3rd jersey introduced. Maybe one that incorporated a “Royal” Lion, taking the one with sunglasses from the current shoulder emblem/shield logo and sprucing it up a little? Combine some elements of a knights armor, maybe a sword? And, of course, have purple in the color scheme as that is the LA Kings identifying color.
Or how about a King being our main logo, maybe some variation of the Burger King but with a better design. I actually really enjoyed the numbering and lettering on those jerseys, nice font and great color scheme.
My vote?
Alternate Jersey – Use the throwback vintage Forum Blue and Gold as the Alternate or a totally new design with a King/Lion as the main logo
Home and Road – Use the current third and a white variation as the home and roads unless they want to bring back the Chevy design. A touch of purple in them would be nice as that is the color I associate with our team.

I personally love the current 3rd, not exactly a fan of the typeface used for the LA but whatever, I can deal. I actually started off hating it, but I think once I saw it in person it really changed my views. I do, however, hate to see both purple and the crown leave from the home jerseys. I think that the third for next season, as much as I like the vintages, should be based on the current home except with a base purple color, black yokes/elbows and aluminum trim with the current crown as the logo. It would keep the vintage identity while still keeping the last generation as a basis.
I would also like to see a little purple introduced into the current third, maybe purple trim bordering the silver stripes similar to the orange in the sharks uniform?
If the Kings do decide to introduce a new totally original 3rd, I would like to see some aspect of Quick’s helmet (best in the league IMO) introduced into a new logo.

I find it ironic that people are calling the the *Kings* jersey the “Raider” jersey! The Kings suffer from a complete lack of any form of tradition and who ever heard of a “king” being attired in Black/White! I have been a Kings fan for over 20 years and the attempt to invoke 1993 with a knock off of the “chevy” logo (which was just as bad) with a simply *horrible* crest on the current 3rd has me shaking my head.

If you’re going back, go back to the black, white, and silver of the Gretzky era. Those looked really cool blending naturally with the ice. The current third jerseys are amateurish. Otherwise think of something new that’s nice. The purple and gold can be the 3rd jerseys.
On an NHL matter, I still think the home team should wear white. It just feels right and was that way for years, plus you get to see different uniforms for the visitors each time at the game. I remember the Redwings coming in with their full red rigalia with white trim, just like Santa Claus, lol.

Not sure if it will matter since it seems like the decision has already been made, but here’s my 2 cents anyway…
Current Black/Purple Home Jerseys: They are ok; not spectacular, but also not terribly ugly or boring. One thing I would change is the color of the slim stripes around the elbow: it’s now a muddy, gray color with a bit of sparkly stuff woven it but it looks dark and dirty (like it’s supposed to be white but it didn’t get cleaned properly), the current black 3rd jersey has a MUCH better and brighter silver stripe. I’m ok with the crown; it’s a King’s logo staple.
Current Black/White 3rd Jerseys: One word: “boring”. Yes, the black/white/silver combo looks sharp, but the design is uninspiring and bland AND there is no immediate team recognition. Where’s the crown? Where’s the shield? Where’s the PURPLE??? People see that jersey and say “Oh, hey… you’re a…. Hmmm… LA? *person squints and steps closer to get a better look at the logo/team name on the jersey*… Oh! You’re a King’s fan! Sweet jersey, bro. *internal dialog goes something like: Wow, I never would have guessed that in a million years… What were they thinking?*
Vintage Purple/Gold Jerseys: Complete and utter Fabulousity. The colors look amazing in person and they really stand out on HD TV. And it’s iconic. The Red Wings have red, the Flyers have Orange, the Sharks have teal: all instantly-recognizable colors and teams. Seriously, if the flyers can make “convict orange” work, anything is possible… especially a color with as much saturation and depth as our “Forum Blue”/purple. It’s beautiful to look at and the Kings are the only team in the NHL who use it. Let’s capitalize on it and do to the hockey world what the Lakers did to 98% of the population: make Purple/Gold synonymous with WINNING. ***Side Note: I agree with the posters who mentioned that the font on the vintage jerseys is too chubby and difficult to read. I too have a hard time distinguishing the 2′s, 3′s, 5′s, 6′s, and 8′s.***
A white version of the current 3rd jersey would be even more boring and lifeless than the black version. It would look like a glorified practice-jersey at best. Perhaps a hybrid of the current home jersey with the 3rd jersey would please the masses, but please don’t dump the purple! And please don’t lock away the vintage Purple/Gold. At least use it as the new 3rd jersey. It looks too awesome to use only 3-4 times per year.

I would rather see an all new purple and gold jersey..all purple with a thick gold stripe running from shoulder to cuFF. The current 3rd jersey certainly isn’t the ugliest jersey in the league, but it’s by far the most BORING jersey in the league. Especially watching them on TV. When you can get the same effect watching them on a 1950 B/W TV as you can on a 1080p LED TV, you know you missed the mark with the design. It’s been so nice to see them in the vintage gear this season, and I even just bought a vintage Doughty jersey because I thought it looked so good. Using the current home jersey as the new 3rd jersey makes even less sense.

Not that I like it, but the current 3rd jersey logo is trying to be (I think) a nod to an early early Kings logo that had a very similar shape from 1967-82 (for better or worse). So I think it’s supposed to have some nod to tradition. So i think the graphic designers were probably constrained by the goal of having elements of an old logo in the “new” one.
Although my fave jerseys were the Gretz-era (That’s when i became a fan as a kid, so i’m biased) someone made a good point… Kings don’t wear silver and black. If we were called the LA Knights that would make sense, but not for Kings
ALSO THAT BEING SAID with the weird rumor/potential for the Sacramento Kings to move to Anaheim their primary colors are purple and black…so it may be a good time to stress a color scheme that isn’t purple and black (our current home unis, which i love) and go with silver & black or purple & gold to keep a distinct identity.

I love the vintage purple jerseys.. But.. The old yellow vintage set with the yellow pants are too much. Chevy logo was great color wise, but extremely boring, if that’s possible. Shield logo was to busy and amateurish. Burger king jersey.. No comment. Homeplate shield is even more boring than the chevy logo. I can’t stand that jersey and am very disappointed that they are moving to use this jersey at all. Current crown logo AWESOME. Excellent stylizing. I’m surprised the home plate jerseys are tracking so well. While the home plate jersey is not as aesthetically unappealing as the playing card/Burger King jersey, it’s safe to say that more time went into conceiving the BK jersey than the current third jersey. After reading all the comments, I’m convinced my idea is the best. Someone suggested some subtle redesigns (more silver in the current home jersey, for example, and some silver in the third jersey) but otherwise, leaving it as is, probably works best.

I like the current home and away jerseys and don’t like the black thirds much, because the armbands look horrible.
I wouldn’t mind a return to the Purple and Gold full time, including using the Gold and Purples on the road. Outside that, the only change I would support beside that would be a return to the Gretzky era logo and jerseys. Keeping the current and dumping the blacks for either that Purple and Gold or the Gretzky eras as the third would work for me.

Agreed Bob. Completely agree. I can’t believe these poll results. People would rather us look like the Raiders and get rid of the purple. Yesterday was a very sad day for me, reading this post. This change will affect my fanship in a negative way. Eventually, I’ll have to get over it. I will never buy the Raider Jersey. Never. This will save me some money in merchandise for the next however long they want to do this. It will be a joke if we just change again in the next 4-5 years.
Get rid of all third jerseys in the league and go back to Home Whites. NBA and MLB do it. Every team in every sport for the rest of time should wear white at home.

I realize my opinion probably isn’t very popular but I thought I’d give it since everyone else did.
When I was a wee lad, all teams in all sports wore white at home. Call me a traditionalist. Just my personal preference. I kind of like seeing the other teams different colors when we play at home if we wore white. White looks sharp. Just my opinion.
Home – Purple/White
Away – Black/Purple
3rd – None (if I had to pick I’d do the vintage purple/gold)

After this change there will be no more purple in the NHL except for our proposed current jersey going to 3rd next year. Tampa Bay is changing to Blue and White next year.

I called it two seasons ago that they were gonna change it -_- I think the 3rd jersey is an amazing 3RD jersey. Its not very royal and kingly unlike the crown but whatver ;/
Not happy about the change but I knew it was coming. At least I get to buy a new jersey next year (The white one) and put JJ on it.

The current Kings 3rd jersey is a sad attempt at a jersey. I’ve never liked it, it looks like the designer tried too hard. The logo is uninspiring, the white bands on the arms are too fat, and what’s with the piping running down the sleeves? They should ditch the piping OR the bands. I’ve always felt that if the Kings wanted to return to wearing the black/white/silver, then go back the Gretzky-era uniform and logo and call it even. To drop the purple/gold all together is a joke. It’s really sad. That would make a solid 3rd jersey starting 2011-2012. I’m sure the Kings organization must realize they are making a huge marketing blunder by putting the p/g jerseys back in the closet. Or are the Kings watching the fan’s response to all this nonsense? Will the Kings make a last-minute change like the folks in Tampa Bay recently did with their uniform changes? But like all things LA Kings, its just a half-hearted attempt which we, the fans, have no choice but to accept. It’s that or become a Duck fan (heaven forbid).

I’m not remind of the Raiders by the current third jerseys at all. The 90′s jersey was all about the Raiders; the current third jersey reminds me of the Chicago White Sox. Maybe we could put the current third jersey aside for the Kings’ softball team. C’mon, how many of you sad letches wouldn’t die to see Heidi in short shorts!

I LOVE the “Los Angeles” embroidered on the hem of the sweater. I wish they’d find a way to integrate that int whatever they do going forward.
I actually wish they’d just drop the current 3rd and slide the Vinatge into that role. i like the black and purple.

The pencil tip logo annoys me to no end, even if the jersey itself is generally great.
Ditching the purple and gold glory to keep the black and purple crap is a stupid move that will almost certainly get reversed within a couple years. I’d be ecstatic if they had gone back to the purple and gold fully. I’d love for there to be another colorful road jersey.
Wish they consider our opinions first, rather then going with the jersey that sells the most.

IMHO, vintage jerseys look cool because they are — vintage!
I think their appeal will fade fast after the first 20 home games.
The third jersey should also stay that way. The current home jersey has more brand equity behind it (I’m a marketer).

Seems like the best all-around answer is purple with gold for home jersey, white with purple and gold trim for road jersey and the current 3rd or Gretzky era jersey for the alternate. Think that would please the majority of fans here….not all…but the majority.

I gotta say i am a huge fan of the “Old School” aesthetic [in general not necessarily on this point], and i think purple and gold could be unique and gorgeous but the old 70′s washed out colors make me a bit queasy. Make the colors a lot more saturated, and I’m on board 100%. A deep royal purple would be very compelling. As to the current 3rd jersey design, I love the jersey design [minus the crest], the unique arm banding, the silver accent. I even like what i think they were trying to accomplish with the crest design with its simplicity, I just think that they didn’t quite make it. I like the photoshopped version of the current design with the original crown in silver. all this and that said, the black heavy design has two drawbacks. 1 – the accompanying white centric jersey design makes me cringe. 2- The sea of black in the stands doesn’t have the impact that colors do.

If the kings want to sell more Jerseys go with the purple and gold. Recent surveys around the league show the purple and gold are highly well received. The home plate not so much.

I’d like to see the current “vintage purpe and gold” become the primary home jersey. I’d also like to see a white version of that design for the road. I’ve been running some additional polls relating to the jersey ‘situation’. I wanted to find out if and what the fans wanted in a bit more detail. Not surprisingly the ‘Legends’ jersey is leading the polls (same as Hammond’s poll). One of the other questions I asked concerns how often the club should change the jerseys. Overwhelming the response is for them to remain virtually unchanged and establish a consistent and tradition look for the team – in other words, quit monkeying with them.
At this point I don’t think it matters to management what the fans think. Take a look at the polls and vote. Who knows maybe they’ll wake up if the response is out there from the fans. There are four different polls.

In a perfect hockey world, the Kings full-time home jersey would be the Black/Silver Alternates, Away jersey would be White/Silver and the Home Alternate jersey would be the Purple & Gold.

I think there has been alot of words typed already about the black and white alts, so I would like to speak up for the White and Purples. With the exception of the “Los Angeles” down on the bottom, this is my favorite Away Jersey in the NHL (even including the original 6).
I have seen the white version of the 3rd jersey when the kids play during the 1st intermission. Color me (pun intended) un-impressed. The stripping is nice, but the jersey which is already bland in black, is even more bland in white. I know the Kings organization has put alot of work in the white version, but please never let it see the light of day.

The Kings need to go back to the Gretzky era uniforms (perhaps with a crown crest instead of the flying Kings Chevy logo thing); those are by far the best thing they’ve ever worn. Simple and classic-looking, with one of the coolest color combinations ever worn in sports. Some version of the purple and gold wouldn’t be bad either. In any event, anything would be better than the current uni’s; they are among the worst in the league. Uniform-wise, the Kings currently reside amongst the likes of Anaheim, Atlanta, Nashville, Columbus, etc.

Ok, I’m fine with the jersey change, but let’s discuss the logo… If we are gonna leave a plain white and black jersey we need to have some flash; no one ever asked Plain Jane to dance at prom. I propose this: we incorporate the classic purple and gold that is a fan favorite. I feel the best look would be a crown on the front of the jersey with subtle hints of purple and gold. I don’t think it should have too much purple and gold, we don’t wanna be perceived like a bunch of ravers. But, I don’t feel right about having that boring ass “LA” logo like we had first year art students design it.
