@McDonalds, I have to agree with you here. I was at the game tonight, and as the air horn started to sound, and we were jumping to our feet, it suddenly stopped, and the goal was waved off. The non-goal was played and re-played on the mega-tron, and I cannot believe that we were called for goalie interference, and there wasn’t so much as a review before proceeding with play. I have seen more than one questionable call by the refs this season, and I think the bigger issue is becoming the refs QUESTIONABLE CHARACTER. This was a MAJOR swing in points… If that goal had been allowed, it would have been 2 To 1 (Kings win in regulation), two points for the Kings, and no points for the Ducks… 3 points difference than what it should have been– (one less point for the Kings, and two points for the Ducks). Worst officials in all major sports! Why is nobody talking about this???

I was at the game also. It amazing, I was seven rows off the ice over the north goal on left wing faceoff circle (about 180 feet from the play) and clearly saw what happened before any reply on the Megatron. How do the referees in the offense zone, on top of the play, get it so wrong!
Shake it off boys, letss extinguish the Flames monday night,

@McDonalds, Was a tough call. No doubt. I, however would like to thank the 0-6 PP. And the new tweak to the offensive attack: blind passes into an empty slot. 1 goal in 2 games isn’t going to win you much, no matter how bad the zebras are.

@xeropoint,
You cannot spot another team a goal a game. This game was won by the refs, for the Ducks. They should have been wearing Ducks sweaters. It’s not even debatable. The Quack fans in the crowd around me were simply amazed at their good fortune. 4th game this year that was clearly and objectively stolen by officiating. Something is VERY wrong in this league.

@fourtunato, Maybe if the Kings would score more then 1 or 2 goals per game we wouldn’t sit here and blame the refs. I’m sorry but I didn’t think last night’s game by the Kings was much better then the St. Louis debacle. The Kings look tired and unfocused. I saw pass after pass by the Kings in their own zone get intercepted. I know it’s a long season but if you can’t make it 82 games you’re not ready for the NHL yet.
And I know Penner is supposed to somehow be the Kings “savior”, and he has been good, but this team still can’t score goals. One goal against a guy who has 1 game under his belt in 3 years? That’s the best this team can do? Ok, 2 goals if you want to blame the refs for one. But bottom line is this team is struggling and they’ll be lucky to make the playoffs at this point. They made their big run. Now they’re trying to hold on by a thread.
Thanks a lot Clippers for the ice. Both Ducks goals a result of crappy ice. 1st one a weird bounce that led to the breakaway, second when Kopi went down in the Ducks zone leading to the Perry goal. If there ever was a better reason to move the Clippers to Anaheim, this game was it. Seriously, two NBA teams in one arena is ridiculous. I hear Samueli wants a basketball team in Anaheim, why not the Clippers?

@Bailey Fan,
I’ve been pining for that for years. I think Sacremento might move there, maybe.
Can’t even fathom how Samueli can do that to his own team, and his own players. This building is clearly for the Kings and the Lakers. The entire color scheme of the building is done in Kings, and Laker colors. His teams colors aren’t even represented. The city doesn’t even acknowlege his team as a lgitimate LA team.
He could easily have his own city and his own building, and run the team the exact same way, and make a profit. There are so many So Cal cities like Anahiem, San Diego, and so on who would consider themselves lucky to have an NBA franchise that he probably would get an unbelievable financial package to move there.
Nothing but a self centered ego maniac, as far as I’m conccerned. Maybe there’s more to it, but he clearly runs the team to make a profit, and yet passes on a chance to make a killing by moving.

I like the way you think. The Sacramento Kings are supposed to move too. Was thinking the Maloofs should move their NBA Kings to Kansas City on a sweetheart deal from AEG. Then AEG evicts the Clippers who move to Anaheim. Samueli’s sell the Ducks to the Maloofs who move the team to Las Vegas. Only stipulation in the deal is Ducks can’t change their name to the Aces!
Sort of a three way deal.
AEG gets the SoCal hockey market to themselves in exchange for the sweetheart deal in Kansas City.
Samuelis get cash for Sale of Ducks, plus an anchor tenant for the Honda Center in the Clippers who’d probably draw better than the Ducks.
Maloofs find a home for their basketball team and gain an NHL team in Las Vegas, where they’re from but the NBA won’t allow them go to for gambling concerns. Diehard Ducks fans (insert joke here) would still be able to make the drive to Vegas to see their old team once in a while. Plus, once the Coyotes move back to Winnepeg, people in Arizona wouldn’t have to go too far to see an NHL game in Vegas.
Of course, this will never happen. But I’ll be hoping it does anyway.

That was a tough loss. There is one thing evident though, they need to work on their passing in the neutral zone. They aren’t getting enough speed or enough men coming across the blue line. Single man attacks and chip and chase is all they seem to have lately. Mix up the PP too please. Thanks Santa.

@DBking, There was a jersey auction and raffle, so the winners of the raffle and auctions got to stand center ice, and the players came to each winner, took the game-worn jersey off, signed the jersey, handed it to the winner, and took pictures with the winners. Kind of a cool thing. Then, I think Scuderi was the last one left, and the winning girl saw what appeared to be a handicapped boy, and she let him have her jersey. Scuderi then took pictures with both of them. I thought that was a nice story after being frustrated by the loss. Go Kings!

I was at the game tonight and I have a hard time assigning blame to anyone for this game. Quick played great. The Kings got 35 SOG and were buzzing around the Ducks’ net for almost 2 full periods. Even the PP looked much better; despite putting up another doughnut on the board with the man advantage, there was movement and more than a few quality chances. Just some bad breaks and Ray Emery stonewalling us turned a surefire win into a loss.
It sucks that it was against the Ducks. It sucks a few calls went against us. It sucks that we outplayed them but still lost. But that stuff happens. It’s natural to look to assign blame, but sometimes things don’t go your way. Time to move on and gear up for the Flames.

I totally agree with your assesments. I also like the look of DD being more of a roamer on the power play. It gives him a chance to be creative and personally develope into a guy who could rule the power play, and quarterback from anywhere he see’s fit.
Curious though is the fact that JJ was known for being a roamer before he got here, and the Kings had to break him of that habbit. I hope if it works with DD, they’ll start doing the same with JJ on the second power play unit. Seems as though JJ would be a natural.
First things first, we need more power play success before that will happen.

The last Kings-Smucks game at the Pond was probably 60% Smucks fans and 40% Kings fans. Good job Kings fans in holding onto those tickets and showing up tonight.

As I live back east I haven’t even seen Brown play with Stoll, but I posted yesterday Before the game asking if anyone else had concerns as to the natural chemistry (or lack thereof) between Stoll, Smyth and Brown. Just seems like a non starter. Non of them are really playmaker types so where does the offense come from?
When JW was on the line he provided that element, not that I suggest they move him back.
But Brown and Stoll seems like a non starter.

Kings looked good tonight! I thought every facet of their game looked good. Would’ve been 2-1 Kings with no O.T. had the refs not gave this game to the ducks.
One thing I don’t understand about the ref situation is why do we have two refs that ALWAYS seem to agree with each other when their is a controversial goal and yet they never miss infractions that really doesn’t affect the flow of the game. Why did the NHL bring up TWO referees in the system when they’re always going to “protect” each other when one makes a bad call. In other words, do we have two refs just to call MORE penalties so it “seems” like the refs “never” miss a call or are they both there to make sure that one of them don’t miss a call. I’d like to say it’s the first of the two because both refs are flat out missing calls! I understand if there is only one ref and he misses a call but to have TWO refs missing calls!! They’re horrible!!! Cameras didn’t miss it, and certainly 18,000 plus people didn’t, yet “the pros” closest to play DID!!!! Bring back the days when they had one refs, why not? Why should the NHL pay two refs if two is just as bad as having one?
GO KINGS, looked solid tonight!!

We’ve gotta get this power play going asap. At this point I’d almost just tell the players to run it the same as 5 on 5. Cycle down low till u can get a shot with traffic. Terrible terrible game by refs also. Sure they have a lot going on and need to call a game on the spot but the number of errors is insane. Blatant errors. They are calling like 10-15 penalties per game maximum, yet missing huge calls almost every game. If I failed at 5-7% of what I need to do at my job I would get fired. It’s gotta be addresed.
I also have a question for someone who knows a lot about rules of the game at the NHL level. What is the point of only allowing certain aspects of a video review to be “reviewable”? You hear all the time, they can only review to see if the puck went over the line, not to see if the goalie was pushed (for example). What is the point of that? I understand not slowing the game down to review everything but if u are looking at a review why not look at every aspect of a goal? I don’t see the logic in that.
I’d also be in favor of a “coaches review” type of system like the NFL has. However this would only be practical and useful of EVERY aspect of a call is ‘eligible’ for review.

@Cortex949, Something has to be done and what you are saying is spot on. I believe the refs should be reviewed on their performance each and every game. With bad performance should come a fine. Money talks no matter how you look at it. Lets be honest this happens all over the NHL not just at Kings games. Costing teams points could cost players and coaches their jobs with no fault of their own. They need to get it right and that is the bottom line.

Is it just me or is there anyone else that notices a disturbing pattern here? It is now two years in a row that Quick has not demonstrated that he can win down the stretch. You’ve got to stop Perry’s shot plain and simple. Quick was outplayed by an obscure Anaheim goaltending pickup. No matter who you blame this loss on, Quick is 0 and 2 since Bernier beat Nashville. I know I may be a lonely voice here, but is there anyone else who would like to see Bernier start against Calgary?

Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, but they won all four games on the road trip (so Quick doesn’t win games?) and then at home I’m not all that convinced that Terry Sawchuck or Patrick Roy in their prime would’ve won games if his team gets him a half a goal.

Bernier has been getting his chances too as of late. Your point would maybe have some validity if Bernier wasn’t playing and we didn’t know what to expect from him. All things considered, Quick has stolen more games than Bernier this season, and won more games over all, so your arguement about who is a winning goalie at this time seems silly, considering you want to go with the goalie who has the least amount of wins.

They were on a good rotation, and suddenly the other goaltender becomes Bernier rather than continuing a rotation, and as Jess says, give the team a fresh start. Both goalies were winning. Quick gave up three horrible goals against St. Louis. I knew he would be losing against Anaheim. I don’t discount the PP problems. Sometimes, a change in keepers can create a change in momentum. Since the team has gone to Quick exclusively, they’re 0 and 2. All I’m hoping is that Bernier gets a chance to right the ship on Monday.

@Poorman, You are focusing on the wrong issues here man, EVEN if quick didnt let in those 3 easy goals vs St. Louis they still would have lost due to our dismal offence, quick made enough grade A saves and stole soem that should have been goals to get the boys into the game but it just didnt happen. Your argumetns are blaming these loses on quick in which they were most certainly not, and even if Bernier was in goal we still woulda lost with half a goal a game that number 6 pointed out above. Im not trying to attack you or put you down but really quick has been great for us all year is liked 3rd in GAA or something like that, it’d be great to hear you give some credit for his hard work every once in a while
Did Simmonds get tripped at the end of regulation?

I just watched the highlights online. They don’t tell you everything obviously, but between Doughty’s turnover at the blueline (breakaway) and a few wideopen shots that the Ducks had from prime scoring areas, I have a not easy time saying that the Kings played an outstanding game. At least based on that.
I saw at least five grade A scoring chances for the Ducks and maybe two for the Kings. The Kings best chances were still from either a long ways out or towards the perimeter.

@number 6,
Just to be clear, that’s the way it seemed based on the highlights, but people are saying here that the Kings outplayed em most of the way, so maybe they did.

@number 6, they did mostly, but whenever the ducks did get a chance it was always a grade A scoring chance, 2 on 1′s and breakaways and such, the difference is, we had a lot of sustained perimeter pressure, and they had a lot of out numbered attacks

@The Batman,
Batman, wanted to reply to you. Was really pleased to get your confirmation because they usually put in the best scoring chances and I found myself asking if that was all the Kings had. It was contrary to this idea that they played an outstanding game.
Kings put out a solid effort last night. Which is lucky for them because I imagine a lynch mob would have been waiting for them had the game gone the way it did Thursday!!
There’s some talk on here today about it being time to switch up the lines. But when TM only strategy WAS to switch up the lines, it was ineffective and we were asking for more. We have the talent, that’s not the issue. There seems to be no urgency coming from management and coaching about our real issues. The PP and it’s predictability, our passing and it’s inefficiency, and the fact that the game is 60 (underlined, underlined!!!) minutes!!! I’m at 75% of the home games and 2 things happen….most often they come out strong in the first and look solid. Then they come out the remaining 2 and look like a completely different team!! Or they slack the first two and try and fight uphill in the third for the 2 points.
What’s the answer? To boo the team so they know we’re frustrated? No, they know we are because THEY’RE frustrated. A new special teams strategy? Absolutely. A more effective offense? Absolutely. A new, more innovative coach? Quite possibly. They have the heart and talent. That’s why we love them. The only thing I can conclude….after this whirlwind season, is that they need to bring that heart and that talent every game…for the full 60.
And Kings Fans….remember that we love these guys. Get frustrated when u don’t like what u see….but remember what’s at the heart of it all….an amazing hockey team.
Oh yeah…. Way to blow, refs!!!

@FemaleFan#1, I agree. Terrible passing, terrible PP. Fix the passing maybe you fix the PP? Often times at home games I ask where is the pride? Passion? Power? C’mon Kings.

Got to score more than 0 and 1 goals at home. Plain and simple.
Quick looked solid. Doughty seems to have one giveaway = breakaway per game now.
MIA: Jack Johnson, Ryan Smyth Where’s the production?

Why lately have the Kings had a hard time against goalies who don’t play often (Montoya) and/or are playing after a long hiatus (Emery, Halak)?

A team cannot succeed in the playoffs without an effective power play. Dean, why oh why is Kompon still here when his PP strategy is just plain atrocious? Send him to Manchester and bring in their PP coach for the rest of the season. That’s the Kings only hope nothwithstanding the need for better refereeing

I’m gonna make too a dangerous statement regarding the disallowed goal. I would certainly not have been surprised had the goal been allowed, but at the same time, it was sort of the Way it happened that I think led to it being disallowed. They say take the puck to the net, and he did. But Poni was So in tight to Emery that that fact imo plus the big gap in space and time from when Simmonds scored led to the decision.
I’m not saying it was the right call, but watching it on video, I’m not totally surprised.

Disappointing that we didn’t get the extra point, but they played a great hockey game. A bad bounce and a bad call by the officials was the difference.
hey also missed the Simmonds trip right at the end of regulation..It looked blatant to me.
I thought the PP looked pretty good for the most part, but results are what counts. You can’t go 0-6.
I’ll take the point and take the effort that they gave, every night. If we play that way, we’ll be in the playoffs.

Regardless of how well or not they played last night, if I’m not mistaken, their record in just under the last twenty games at home is 6-10-3. That’s four games under five hundred at home. The NYR have also been poor at home. But I don’t think that with that lack of consistency, while you might surprise someone in the first round (depending on If you get there and who you play) I would certainly be very surprised to see much of a playoff run.
And if the inconsistent play at home puts you up against the Canucks, well then they get what they deserve really.
I still see way too much play around the perimeter and ask myself how it is that other teams get players who find space in the slot. Maybe the Kings are more designed to set up screens and get tips and all. But the other teams get those things too, as well as getting open in between the dots.
There is yet work to be done is all.

Also, a response to someone’s comments about Doughty. I Know the ice is bad and all, but just the games I’ve seen (and that isn’t a lot because of where I live) I’ve seen him be responsible for three giveaways at the blue line… two of them on the powerplay that led to SH goals and then the one last night where Quick made the save.
I wonder if it’s a lack of maturity, bearing down, lack of concentration.
He wasn’t making mistakes like that last year.

@number 6, I have to think it’s the ice. Too many highly skilled players are tripping over themselves. That just doesn’t make any sense.
Penner spoke about that the other night. He gave the strong impression that the ice at Staples sucks really bad.
you never see pucks laying flat.

@nykingfan,
Yeah, but remember the plays by Jaime Benn (gotta be aware of where that guy is in relation to you when you’re a man up), and then the one on long island (Grabner or Comeau?). Very ill timed pass to JJ.
The breakaway goal I saw was for sure the ice, but don’t know that DD had anything to do w that one. Don’t even know if he was on the ice.
Tell you what, I went to the Philly game when in LA and was sitting behind the goal. I have this indelibly printed in my mind. DD had the puck, all he had to do was get it in deep. He sort of casually flipped it up in the air, someone (Philly) knocked it down with a glove. They came rushing back up the ice, but the Minute the puck was knocked down I said ‘oh oh’. Well they scored off the rush with the Kings up 2-1 at that point and the game was never the same after that.
That’s another example. Man, don’t get me wrong, I think DD is super super gifted. Super gifted. But you can’t be making mistakes like that. If you do, it can start to become endemic and then it’s Much more difficult to start correcting those habits once they become ingrained.
Hope that makes some sense.
I love about you that you’re so supportive of the team and the guys. I am too (but in my way, and that doesn’t mean only when they win) but there are issues that have to be dealt with if they ever expect to amount to more than a quite good team in the west.

@number 6,
Also, both teams have to play on the ice, no matter how it is, and I’d tend to think it would have a worse impact on a team that is more of a skating and passing teams than the Kings are. But I could be wrong about that.
I think we can (justifiably) look at bad refs, travel and bad ice. BUT at the same time, look at the Pens, Look at Detroit. Some teams have been hit very hard with injuries while the Kings have stayed quite healthy this year. I mean, ya Gotta win at home. You don’t have to be an .800 team at home, but if you can barely manage .500 then at some point it does no good to blame other stuff.
Props to Brown for his play last night. Quick played hard, not his fault. Murray should have started Bernier for this one after the St. Louis game.
Penner started out great with us, but is now slowly succuming to TM’s “quagmire system” and once again offensive production is taking it in the shorts.
Got to dial in the PP and absolutely must start winning at home.
