Thursday practice update; Bernier to start

Jonathan Bernier will start in goal tomorrow against Columbus, Terry Murray said after practice today. Murray said it was part of his plan for the road trip from the start. Murray also said that he would consider putting Kevin Westgarth in the lineup, but hadn’t decided for certain yet. For those who didn’t see it in the notes, last night’s second-period power-play goal is now credited to Alexei Ponikarovsky, not Dustin Brown. More notes and quotes to come…

    So i think TM learned his lesson from last year and play quick and bernier every other game..i like that cuz quick wont be worn out in playoffs! :D

    c-nut Reply:

    @Matthew Motush, totally agree on this, especially since we’re playing 10 games in 20 days. Literally every other day. Gives both our tenders the ability to stay hot without getting burned out.

    @c-nut, Is that as in King Cnut of England c.11th cen. or pronounced /see/-nut? just curious

    [Reply]

    Bill M. Reply:

    @Matthew Motush, Yeah. I like this. Both have now come on strong with the exception of occasional hiccups. alternate them for the last 15, we go into the playoffs witt two great goalies, both seeing just enough action to have a rhythm but not enough to overwork them. If it works out well, this potentially takes us into the playoffs with TWO hot goalies.

    The first couple PPs looked a bit disjointed yesterday, like they hadn’t fully adjusted to TM’s changes. The third one looked better, and of course, they scored. I hope TM’s changes actually continue to produce, because with our strength in other areas, NOBODY wants to see us in the playoffs with a clicking power play. Funny, but the current standings would have us in the first round at Detroit. Given how we have done the last two years against them, I think I actually prefer that matchup. Certainly it’s preferable to VAN.

    [Reply]

    Stuart Reply:

    @Bill M., I thought the second unit was staying the same, TM was just changing the 1st PP?

    [Reply]

    Bill M. Reply:

    @Stuart, You might be right about that. Still, I thought that both PP lines started looking more confident towards the end.

    DesertKing Reply:

    @Matthew Motush,

    Normally I would agree with you, but right now we need every stinking point we can get and JQ in golas is almost 90% lock to get a win while JB in goals is more around 75% lock to get the win. I would feel more comfortable doing that if we had some cushion inthe standings, but that isn’t there right now.

    [Reply]

    Jeff Reply:

    @DesertKing, I agree, we aren’t in the playoffs yet, you should always go with whats working, whats the saying, if it isn’t broke don’t fix it, and that goes with Quick. Keep the momentum going. There was another Murray not too long ago that changed things every other night and look where he is now.

    @tornado12, The first couple just looked out of sync – like they were still getting comfortable with the changes. the third PP (where they scored) did look different and was MUCH better. Movement, sustained pressure, pucks on net.

    Until the last PP, they couldn’t get control of the puck in Detroit’s zone. It was impossible to tell the difference because of that.
    The PP goal was because of the outstanding work of Martinez. He took over that PP and made all of the smart reads and got his shot thru.

    mrbrett7 Reply:

    @Scot, Good point!

    illegalstick33 Reply:

    @mrbrett7, No…. leaving the bench at that moment would be stupid but if Westy was in the lineup to protect “star players” then it doesn’t get more “star” then your Captain and your number one center. So instead of jumping off the bench during the scrum he should have come over the boards on the next opportunity and asked boll to join him on the ice. I can’t remeber if Westy was in the lineup the night the Flyers were giving JB a hard time and Carter was talkin all kinds of trash. JB got rattled and he did everything he could not to wack someone with his stick. Carter never even got challenged by anyone. The point is TM says that Westy is in for a reason (Heavy, Enforcer, Protection) and he never seems to get used for that reason. Thats why I think people are frustrated.

    [Reply]

    @Token, i think it was mentioned here before but, westy is a show fighter, an expected fighter, a face off fighter who the hell cares about that. the big red dog is a spur of the moment fighter a reaction fighter a true enforcer. word is out on cliffy he is a real good fighter and other teams know it. which is why when cliffy is in we dont get pushed around too much. and if we do cliffy is in your face. simmer is also that type of fighter but more of a light middle weight. if westy would act more like a true enforcer rather then a face off fighter he would be fine. marty was a true enforcer as was lappy.

  20. Dave says:

    i don’t see why TM would play Westgarth? Richie looked good, the fourth line played pretty well and Clifford is more than able and willing to take on anyone who may take a run at anyone. i’m guessing the only reason to play Westgarth is Boll but at least Boll can move the puck. he actually made a nice play last night that led to a goal. can’t say that about Westgarth.

  21. Naturallawyer says:

    Whoever starts this game, I hope Bernier gets the start at Nashville (next games are tomorrow at Columbus, Sunday at Dallas and Tuesday at Nashville). Bernier owns the Preds. It makes sense to start Bernier against Columbus and then again against Nashville. If Quick plays well in Dallas, you start giving him more starts again in the next home stand when the travel won’t wear on him as much.

    With goaltending, it’s largely a mental struggle; focus is the most important thing. Road trips have to be harder on them, especially this time of year, with not sleeping in your own bed, getting into town very late at night, etc. That isn’t an issue in the playoffs when you have a little more time to rest.

    I saw the stat a while ago, but it’s as meaningless as my opinions :)
    How is it possible that a guy who plays 3 minutes a night can have an effect on the outcome?
    When he’s a scratch, has Ritchie lit up the lamp or set up goals that were directly related to the outcome? He’s a nice complimentary player and nothing more.
    I saw the same type stat about Peter Harrold. that’s another guy I like, but his rpesence has no bearing on the outcome of games…Besides, the last game he played we lost..thos who brought up the stats about our record with him in there, didn’t bother mentioning that after we lost.
    Harrold did nothing wrong and certainly wasn’t the reason we lost, but he’s also not the reason we win.

    Dan H. Reply:

    @nykingfan,

    Well it’s more that the line gets more time so the other lines are more well rested coming down the stretch.

    dug Reply:

    @nykingfan,

    I agree in that Westy doesn’t have a huge impact on the bottom line. My only concern would be that when he’s in, it seems like TM is wasting a roster spot…because he only plays 3 minutes. In my opinion, a guy like Richardson just brings a little more value in the sense that he can be trusted with more minutes.

    I’m all for an enforcer, under the circumstances that there is nobody else on the roster who can protect Kopi & the rest…but after watching Clifford step in to defend Greene & draw the spearing from Ott (& later go on to add a highlight reel hit & a pretty goal), all while Westy skated around the outside of the scrum, I don’t see the sense in devoting a roster spot to it. I am definitely not saying Westy can’t fill that role, because I believe he can…just saying that I believe the cumulative toughness of the rest of the roster already has it covered.

    [Reply]

  26. nykingfan says:

    TM is just sticking by the plan he made previously. Bernier has been playing well, so there really is no reason to change that idea. Hopefully the rest is helpful to Quick for the stretch drive.

    We’re still crying over a 4th line player getting 3 min a night?
    I like Ritchie a lot. The problem is, he is Trevor Lewis with a different number. Both are energy players, but neither one can score. they’re both excellent PK guys, but so are several others on this team, so there really isn’t a need for both every night. I think Lewis’ upside is a lot better than Richardson’s, so I would continue to use Lewis.
    We have enough YOUNG players, that double shifting shouldn’t be an issue if TM decides to go that way (this is not a back to back situation)..besides, who would you rather see on the ice Simmonds, Brown, or another forward double shifting, or Richardson?

    [Reply]

    kevin Reply:

    @nykingfan, So what is it that westy brings at least Richardson brings something to the game and to answer your question richardson over every one except maybe kopi and williams.

    again, I like Richardson, but the point totals just don’t make sense.
    Borwn has how many goals/assists as compared to Ritchie?

    [Reply]

    BrokeKingsFan Reply:

    @nykingfan, the fact that he only gets 3 min a night is part of the problem. your right in saying that we are young enough and can handle the double shifting but it still does take some wind out of everyone’s sails come the latter part of 3rd periods. Your comparison of Lewis and B-rad is exceptable and i would rather have two guys who are mirror images of each other playing anywhere from 10-20min a night that bring speed, hustle, tenacity, effort and an possibility of putting points on the score sheet any day of the week over a guy who plays 3 min, generally is no where to be found when the going gets tough ( i realize this is also due to the fact he is on the bench when this usually happens, which makes his presencve there irrelevent! how can you enforce if your not on the ice?) and has never been a momentum changer in anyway for our team whether its a fight, taking the body Ect.

    Rich, sounds like a common question on here is, “What does Terry Murray feel Westgarth brings to the table?” Any chance we can here an explanation on that. I think having Richie in there not only brings speed and energy to that 4th line, but also Richie can be inserted up and down the line-up in case of an injury to say a 2nd line winger. Westgarth can’t fill that. Also, Richardson can be out there on the PK if needed, giving TM an extra option, in case our PK is out for extended time, etc. Doesn’t seem like Westgarth can be used in such a versatile role. And he really DOESN’T fight much. Just curious about TM’s logic there. Not saying he’s wrong. I’m just a fan putting in my 2 cents. :)
