Jonathan Quick will get the start in goal tomorrow against Vancouver, Terry Murray said after practice today. Murray cited Quick’s ability to bounce back from bad games, as well as his familiarity with the Canucks, as two reasons, but said Bernier would get regular work here in the late part of the season as well.
Murray also discussed the first-line change, saying he replaces Wayne Summonds with Justin Williams because he didn’t think Simmonds was moving his feet well enough. More on this, and other notes and quotes, to come…

@Matt Fig, Agreed with TM’s move as ultimately Quick is our starter, but completely agree that he played poorly against Colorado as well. Not solely because of the goals as only one was really a “bad goal,” but all game he was scrambling, over committing to shots, going down too early and playing the puck poorly. He’s looked bad in two consecutive games, BUT he’s a phenomenal goaltender, mentally strong and I look forward to him bouncing back with a big game.

@Mike, one bad game is hardly it. Quick has been on a slide for at least 5 games. See the NHL stats for the games (links below), it shows Bernier well above quick in every statistical category over the last 5 games. Sure Quick has had a better year overall and commands respect, but it was hardly just one bad game, its been a slide over the last few weeks.

Who says I’m faulting Quick’s performance for the season? Did I mention that anywhere in my comment?
1) You can’t blame the D for the bad goals he gives up.
2) Bernier has been playing much better lately, there has been a level of consistency in his play despite playing less and more sporadically.
3) Quick played has been awful in Detroit, and not-so great against Colorado
Wouldn’t it been logical to go with the hot gun right now?

@Matt Fig, Hot gun? His last 3 wins came against struggling teams. I guess i’d just rather have our proven goalie in net.
And the Avs game for quick? He gets the blame for a 5 one 3 goal? And the goal that went off Stoll i think it was? They won is what matters there.
As for you faulting Quick’s season? I never said that. You said he has been cold and to me those stats say other wise. And you know what, a lot of the bad goals given up by both goalies are because of team mistakes, not just D. Ive seen our forwards cough it up more then enough times.

Something some of you have to remember is that when an opposing team scores a goal on you, it’s not just the goalie who let the goal in, it’s the whole team.

@Alen,
You can always use statistics to tell the story you’d like to hear. Hell, I’ve made a living out of it. These are the only statistics I care about right now:
Last 12 games Quick has started:
9W
2L
1OTL
That’s 19 of a possible 24 points in the bank. He’s looked awful in the last 3 periods he played, no doubt. But even in the 10 2/3 games prior when he let a couple in, he’s still looked really good. He’s earned the chance to shake it off and get back in net. But this time of year, the leash is going to be short.
[Reply]
100% agree with both decisions. They looked a bit more cohesive last night when Williams moved to the first line. I like the added skill he brings with Kopi and Penner. Williams knows how to finish, and the first line needs that. Eventually I’d like to see Simmonds and Brown switch spots eventually, but as long as some chemistry develops on all 3 lines, I’m happy. BTW, how great has the 4th line looked these past few games?
Quick needs to be our #1 and has done well against the Nucks this year. If the same defense that showed up last night shows up again on Saturday, he’ll be fine. Stoked that Bernier has been playing so well and has earned the trust to go back to a lot in the stretch run. He’s really matured a lot these past two seasons and I’m really happy to see him turn into our 1B. Quick needs to show us that he’s got tiger’s blood in his veins tomorrow. #winning

I think both goalies are very good, I just prefer Bernier’s style and he handles the loose pucks behind the net without giving me a heart attack every time. I hope he gives the first line more time together, the boys were almost running into each other last night.

If they are playing the shooting lanes correctly you have no choice but to shoot it wide or risk a turn over near the blue line.

Record in games started when facing 25 or more shots/60 min: 19-8-1

Look at the canucks starting off poorly and now they are one of the best teams in the NHL. or we can look at it the other way where the Kings were on of the best in the beginning and now they are fighting for their playoff lives.
How about we just be thankful we have TWO great young goalies? We’ve never even had ONE in this franchise it seems. As far as the start for Vancouver, it really could have gone either way. However, I don’t really like the whole “you win, you play” inconsistency. Terry should have just came out and said, “You win, you play, if your Quick”. It seems he just insists on giving Quick 60 games. It’s one thing to support Quick, but there’s alot of supporters on here in denial about his play of late. Yes a couple of those goals in Colorado were deflections, but he couldn’t have made one of those stops? He was terrible in Detroit as well.

@Nyck,
In the 1974-75 season — a season without shoot-out or overtime wins — the Kings put together 105 points.
Their goalie was Rogie Vachon (with Gary Edwards as his back-up. Rogie was in the running for the Vezina (which then was like the Jennings is now) until the last few games.
After seeing Rogie I never doubted that the Kings had a GREAT goaltender. I almost got that feeling with Felix the Cat.

Bernier may be calmer in net, but he sure gives up some MASSIVE rebounds, looking forward to seeing Quick back in net. love both guys though.

Nothing wrong with this decision by TM. I thought JB earned a shot at a consecutive start but JQ has already beaten Vancouver and it’s his first chance to play after a poor outing, so he may be primed for a good outing.
As far as rebounds go, both keepers have issues with giving up juicy rebounds. I just wish Quick could handle the puck a little better.

Quick everyone panic! Quick is starting and Simmonds is on the 2nd line..some of this stuff everyone is saying really made me laugh.
so Bernie had a shutout last night great..that is what a backup is suppose to do is win games does not mean he will be in the next game. Some of you guys mentioned playoffs and giving Quick a rest..What playoffs?? they are not locked in yet if we were then id say start Bernie and let Quick rest. Its just amusing to see that people sound like they give up on Quick after A bad game if i seem to recall Bernie got lit up against Philly when they played here and no one gave up on Bernie sooo whats the difference?
As far as Simmonds WHO CARES he got moved to the 2nd line hes not a scratch or anything he will play on the 4th line if he had to. Obviously TM saw something that we all didnt see just let then play and see what happens since there the once making the money lol

@Kasey9, Agreed. What happens if it goes to a shootout? There is a glaring difference between the two. This game will be a battle and may very well go to a shootout. We’ll all be happy to have Quick in then

Quick, everyone don’t care about your team! You shouldn’t voice your opinions about the things going on and the changes TM makes. WHO CARES? They’re not a lock to be in the playoffs anyway, so who cares. You should all agree that Quick is better than Bernier or at least give up on him when he has a bad game like you do when Quick does.

@ all Quick haters:
Where do you think we’d be in the standings right now if Bernier and Quicks starts were switched for the entire season…
I’m so sick and tired of hearing all the Quick haters. Don’t get me wrong, i love JB too but he’s the #2 for a reason and will stay the #2 for longer than all you haters wish. Quick absalutely kills it if you haven’t noticed. He’s at the top of the league in most catagories and makes up for our lack of goal scoring to win games. JB is good and on his way up, but you don’t get to the top over night. “Hype” doesn’t automatically make you proven, it’s just a bunch of guys like us with opinions and predictions. I’m more concerned with results which Quick has given us. As for TM’s re-neg on the “win and your in”… Who cares what WAS said during our giant slide when he came up with that. The playoffs are around the corner and we NOW have a TEAM mentality of “Win and WE’RE in(the playoffs)” and i believe that TM is making the right decisions to make that happen for us all.
agree or disagree, this is just MY opinion.

@linny, didn’t say that i DID know where we’d be, i was asking you. With JB’s subpar play in the entire season until late do you really think we’d be in the playoff hunt? he’s a #2 for a reason. Don’t forget that he’s a #2 goalie in the NHL where most teams wouldn’t even give their #2 a look at this point in the season w/playoffs on the line. We should be so lucky to have a POTENTIAL #1 in the making w/JB. Pretty good potential yes, but he’s young and needs work before he’s ready. Did i mention that he’s a #2 goalie? JB’s a #2 goalie behind our #1 J-Quick and i couldn’t be happier. Everyone on this site puts “IMHO” somewhere on their post, but to me thats total BS. thats stating that you have some expertise in the field your talking about. Now i’m not saying that you might not have some form of expertise that is relevant to your opinion. But please, the Coaching staff that make the decisions have a bit more at stake than we do with what actually happens out there like their jobs for instance. Don’t you think they just might have crunched the numbers and weighed the odds a bit better than you?

Quick has to stay sharp and keep the ball rolling. No matter what any of you say, Quick is going to be the number one for the rest of this season. As Foxy has said, Quick bails out the kings so many times, a game like Detroit, it would’ve been nice if the team coudl’ve bailed him (Quick) out for once.

@Michael_DD8, U know how many Quick said us alot of times cause offense couldnt score more than one or two always shootout and why they think he has 7-0 shootout Victories cause Quick never given up on anything he plays
When he knows is his fault he admits it and accept it as a man would say it was my fault and then he moves on and be better the next time he plays

@Michael_DD8, lol He did bail them out against Detroit the last game they played against them with the 50 plus shot shutout it was only a matter of time b4 they lit the Kings up since that should have happened the last game pretty much but like you said the team could not really help him either

@Michael_DD8, every time Quick loses and allows soft goals it’s because the team didn’t play well according to many of you. But when he plays well, it’s all him. A bit of a double standard there, don’t ya think?

@linny, it is a double standard but u got to admit that Beriner has his shares of bad times too
Since he did great with one team doesnt mean he can do it again Against Canucks u never know
Quick mess up couple of times doesnt mean he sucks or we should give up on him i dont give up on anyone of the Kings player at all
[Reply]
I think JB should have gotten the start for two reasons:
1) JB’s never been hotter in his pro career with really “sick” stats over his last 7-8 games while Quick has been sloppy his last couple, back to “happy feet” and terrible puck handling
2) the “nucks” are after home ice for a cup run and though not playing great lately, will be on their game against the Kings who could be their opponent in the first round. If they whallop JB…no biggie…back to our #1 guy against Dallas. If they wallop Quick, then the controversy starts.
If JB happens to beat them, no biggie again as Quick still starts against Dallas. I think this move could backfire big

@linny, #2 is the problem you cant take that chance of getting Killed with how the standings are because if for some reason hopefully wont happen we lose out on the playoffs by 2 points you can always look back at that being a game we took a chance on our backup with and blew it.
Yes Quick was horrible last game but you cant fault him for the AVES game 2 PP goals and ya that 3rd one was his fault but still he was solid in that game

All Quick needed was to sit and watch a game after his very small lapse the past 2 games. Its coming to the last and hardest part of the season and imo he needed a little mental rest (we don’t need him over worked like last year). We have like 16 or 17 games left and I think it would be a smart move to let Bernie play every fourth game. Keeps both tenders fresh and ready for whoever we have to play in the first round.
