Dustin Penner is ready to play tonight — no unforeseen immigration issues — and the fourth line will be Kyle Clifford, Trevor Lewis and Alexei Ponikarovsky, with Kevin Westgarth as the healthy scratch. As planned, Jonathan Bernier will start in goal. More notes and quotes to come…

AFAIK, there is no “official” Insider hang out bar, pre- or post-game. Although there should be. But we’re not that well organized. I used to love hanging out at the old Holiday Inn across the street bc the bar prices were half of what they charge at LA Live. I’m not holding out much hope for the Luxe when the bar reopens.

Random thought. Why do immigration issues always get mentioned in these NHL trades? Does immigration seriously raise obstacles in these deals and if so couldn’t the NHL find some way to get “special consideration” from government officials. It isn’t like they’re taking a job away from some US Citizen or coming from some terrorist haven country.
Back on topic. Looking forward to tonight. Not sure I like Richardson matching up across from Doan but someone needs to sit on him whenever he’s on the ice! He kills the Kings everytime.
[Reply]
Capt Jam Reply:
March 3rd, 2011 at 11:27 am
@JB,
Immigration issues come into play when the player in question is not American. Non-American players need work visas in order to play as a member of a US-based team. Especially in post-9/11 America, all the paperwork has to be signed and delivered before the player gets into his first game.
[Reply]
nykingfan Reply:

@Capt Jam,
I understand about the work visa, but how does it work with him having a house in LA and living there in the summer?
[Reply]
Capt Jam Reply:
March 3rd, 2011 at 12:26 pm
@nykingfan,
As long as he’s not a member of a terrorist cell or the Nazi party, he’s pretty much free and clear to own property in the U.S. He probably came and went into the US on his Canadian passport.
Matthew Reply:
March 3rd, 2011 at 12:28 pm
@nykingfan, Having a house in a foreign country versus working and making income in that company are comparing apples and oranges completely. Do you pay income taxes and real estate taxes at the same time, to the same entity and/or do they have anything to do with one another?! No, other than the money leaves your hands and goes to the government in some fashion.
nykingfan Reply:
March 3rd, 2011 at 12:56 pm
@Capt Jam, Matthew
guys
still confused though..He can enter the country during the off season to live here..is that time restricted as well?
I was thinking…if he’s allowed to live in this country on a foreign visa, why would he need to get cleared to work here as well.
If this is getting too complicated..don’t worry about it. I was just curious.
JB Reply:
March 3rd, 2011 at 1:59 pm
@Capt Jam, Dude I get that I ain’t completely ignorant. I meant why is it even something that comes up especially since he obviously has a passport and lives here in the summer. If he and others have a passport let him in and then turn on the TV that night to comfirm he played. Done!
Do they really think some terrorist is going to dedicate his life to become a pro-hockey player just to be some sleeper agent and possibly get into the US?

The Kings seemed to have gotten “special consideration” for Penner, being that Penner immigration issue was cleared in one day. It would have taken an average person months to get cleared…
[Reply]
RabidZiggy Reply:

@Eric, In general, professional athletes only take a few days for their paperwork to clear, at most. Since they are someone at their top of their field and being pushed through by a high powered organization (the NHL) it doesn’t take nearly as long as for a normal person.
[Reply]
What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@Eric, I’m sure they paid plenty. This really should be the sort of thing that’s handled as a general issue for every player in a league. The paperwork should be handled on some sort of contingency basis, and if necessary, leagues should overpay for the privilege (that is, more than the cost) of getting expedited.
The whole thing is completely silly anyway, not just the existence of borders, but specifically, governments’ inability to work out a logical way to handle these things in advance (after all, if he was a terrorist, wouldn’t they have wanted to know when he was ALREADY traveling in and out of the country?) Again, nothing I “believe in” anyway.

JB Reply:

@Eric, I get it’s special but I guess just not special enough in my mind. Honestly it should be automatic no more than taking the NHL’s word or checking on ESPN that the guy really is a hockey player. Not like the US Government can’t find Gary Bettman if the NHL were to try and pull a fast one.

He looks like a completely different player than the one earlier this year. He’s fighting for loose pucks and taking the puck strong to the net. All things we were hoping tos ee starting in October.
I think at this point, TM must feel more comfortable with Clifford being the tough guy in the lineup. The fact that Clifford is also a rugged, hard nosed, talented player doesn’t hurt. I’m sure most players watch the fights online. I can’t see too many guys saying..”well this should be a cakewalk” when thinking about dropping the gloves with him or taking adantage of one of our skilled players.
