A bit of an anomaly took place in overtime last night, when there were two full minutes of 3-on-3 play, after penalties to the Kings’ Alexei Ponikarovsky and New York’s Brandon Dubinsky. I’m sure it has happened before, but I’ve never seen it, and frankly it looked strange. It looked more like 1-on-1 play, with [...]
Richardson gets another look up top
Will the fourth time be the charm for Brad Richardson? Three previous times this season — for a total of seven games — Richardson has started a game as the Kings’ first-line left winger, but his life span in that role has yet to last more than four games. The Kings also went to that [...]
Loktionov’s learning curve
It’s been an up-and-down road trip for Kings rookie Andrei Loktionov. He started it on left wing, where he never looked entirely comfortable, then seemed to elevate his game in certain areas when moved back to center for the Washington game. Loktionov had one goal and two assists in three games back at center, but [...]
Friday practice update
Terry Murray called this a “therapy day” for Jack Johnson and Willie Mitchell, noting that Mitchell had suffered a “lower-body bruise” early in the game and had played through it and that Johnson had “a little strain.” That’s about as descriptive as it’s going to get. Both players are expected to play tomorrow but will [...]
Friday practice; new lines
Here’s how the Kings’ forwards are skating in Long Island today… Richardson-Kopitar-Simmonds Smyth-Stoll-Williams Clifford-Handzus-Brown Ponikarovsky/Lewis/Loktionov/Westgarth/Sturm Jack Johnson and Willie Mitchell are not practicing, so we’ll find out later if it’s just “maintenance.” Johnson was doing some vigorous work on the exercise bike before practice.
Postgame notes (Feb. 17)
Some notes from last night’s game… – The Kings earned at least one point in their 11th consecutive game, as they lost to the New York Rangers 4-3 in a shootout at Madison Square Garden. – The Kings are 8-0-3 in their last 11 games and, by recording at least one point in 11 straight [...]
The (first) view from New York
Traveling certainly allows one to learn things about different areas of the country. Last night, while basically sitting among the fans in Madison Square Garden’s “press box,” I learned that, apparently, New York City law mandates the use of at least one four-letter word per sentence. Something to keep in mind, if you ever visit… [...]

Murray postgame quotes
Terry Murray’s postgame thoughts… (on how he views the shootout loss…) MURRAY: “I look at the third period, coming back two times, down 2-1, down 3-2. It was a huge response. I was real pleased with that, to get into a tie game at the end and to get into the overtime. Unfortunately, we start [...]
Brown postgame quotes
Dustin Brown’s postgame thoughts… (on the game…) BROWN: “We’ve been doing well in the shootouts lately, but tonight they got the win. We just have to take the point and move on to the Islanders.” (on not getting the extra point because of the shootout loss…) BROWN: “That point is a huge point for us. [...]
Bernier postgame quotes
Jonathan Bernier’s postgame thoughts… (on the game…) BERNIER: “The guys really battled hard. Back to back, it’s never easy, and we found a way to go into the shootout and we were playing from behind twice in the game. It was a great effort by the team, that’s for sure.” (on the Rangers’ second shootout [...]

End of regulation: 3-3

Kings 3, Rangers 3
Brown’s second goal of the game tied it 3-3 with 2:21 remaining. Rob Scuderi’s point shot was blocked, but Scuderi picked up the puck again and shot. It went wide, but Brown, at the side of the net, was there to stuff it in. Alec Martinez also picked up an assist.
Rangers 3, Kings 2
The Rangers took a 3-2 lead with 3:08 remaining. Ryan Callahan won the puck in the defensive zone and carried it up the ice, into the Kings’ zone. His shot went wide, but Bernier overplayed the shot and was out of position as Brandon Dubinsky swept it, picked up the puck and banked it off [...]
Kings 2, Rangers 2
The Kings tied the game just 1:40 after Gaborik’s go-ahead goal. Brad Richardson won the puck in the corner of the offensive zone and fed it high to Matt Greene, whose slap shot from the right point beat Lundqvist cleanly, five-hole, to make it a 2-2 game 7:50 into the third period. Anze Kopitar also [...]
Rangers 2, Kings 1
The Rangers took the lead with a goal 6:10 into the third period. On a counter-attack, Marian Gaborik went 1-on-1 with Drew Doughty, pulled up for a moment in the offensive-zone faceoff circle and beat Bernier with a sharp wrist shot to the farm corner to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead.
End of second: 1-1
Shots were 11-9 in favor of the Rangers in the second period and are 21-18 in favor of the Rangers for the game. The Rangers had a flurry of activity after they tied the game, but then it became a tight-checking affair late in the period.
Kings 1, Rangers 1
The Rangers tied the game 4:01 into the second period, after winning an offensive-zone faceoff. Ryan Callahan went to the front of the net and, after Derek Stepan pushed the puck toward the crease, Callahan reached in and tipped the puck past Bernier from close range to tie the game 1-1.
End of first: Kings 1-0
The Kings got the better of the pace of play for most of the period, although the Rangers had 10 shots on goal to the Kings’ nine. The Rangers will be on the power play for the first 52 seconds of the second period.
