Don’t forget, there’s actually an NHL game tonight between the Kings and the Detroit Red Wings. The Red Wings made a little bit of their own news today, signing goalie Jimmy Howard to a two-year, $4.5-million contract extension. The Red Wings, to little surprise, are cruising along this season, in second place in the Western Conference. They’ve been struggling a bit at home of late but have won five consecutive road games, most recently a 3-2 shootout win over Buffalo on Saturday. The Kings are 2-0-0 against Detroit this season, with a 3-2 overtime win at Staples Center on Dec. 4 and a 5-0 win at Detroit on Dec. 13. For the latest on the Red Wings, here’s a couple stories from the Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News, followed by the expected lineups for the Red Wings and Kings and the Red Wings’ full roster…

Who loses their spot with the addition of penner?
I’m hoping it’s Lewis or Ponikarovski, rather than Richardson.

@Eric, Westgarth more than likely, unless playing Anaheim or another “big-bodied team”

@AZ King, If Westgarth wasn’t scratched when Sturm was in the line up, what has changed? The only spot Penner is replacing is Sturms. The rest of the line up is the same.

@Dominick,
That was mostly when either Richie or Poni were in the doghouse. Everyone seems to be on the same page now, and aside from the Ducks we don’t have many more real physical teams left to play.

@Dominick, I don’t disagree, but things have changed a bit.
Penner-Kopitar-Simmonds
Smyth-Stoll-Brown
Those lines are pretty set. It seems pretty obvious that Williams and Handzus won’t sit, and I doubt Clifford does either. So for simplicity’s sake, a third line of
Clifford-Handzus-Williams
That leaves Richardson, Lewis, Ponikarovsky, and Westgarth. Lewis doesn’t seem to be the odd man out, so I have a feeling our fourth line wingers will be a revolving door of those three players, Poni, Richardson, and Westgarth.

@AZ King, I agree with you guys, but your not taking into account who is putting the lines together.

@Dominick, excellent point; as management seems to equate Richardson with Westgarth, I expect to see Richardson played when light and fast is required, and Westgarth when big bodies are more desireable.

Shut down their possesion game. All the complaining I’ve done about the power play will be on full display with the Red Wings tonight. They agressively patrol the lanes on the weekside and first option is always lateral puck movement down low, low to high is secondary.

Don’t know if this has been asked, actually a few things:
1- Any reaction from Colten Teubert about being traded? Especially to a Canadian team?
2- Does Teubert get moved from Manchester to Oklahoma City (THe Edmonton AHL Affiliate)? Or do the Oilers let him stay there since the Monarchs are doing so well, or do they even have a choice?

@Cynic, They sent him to Oklahoma City per their GM. On another note someone amended the wiki page for Dustin Penner already.

@Cynic, 2- I believe he would have to sign an agreement with all 4 teams involved, and be placed on loan. Less complicated to move him.

I cant wait to see the smiles on Bob Miller and Jimmy Fox’s faces when they come on the air tonite. Adding a 20+ goal scorer without losing anyone on the roster is an accomplishment. Losing a low 1st round draft pick next year that we really didnt need is fine. Losing a prospect who is near the bottom of the depth chart is fine. The only question is will Penner play like a Stanley Cup champ? My guess is yes he will once he sees the work ethic on this team. With rare exception, the Kings come to play every night. And the consensus amongst the blogs and sportswriters is that the Kings are a tough team to play against. Its good to be a Kings fan.

@UglyinLA, I think the “I’ll show them” attitude will come into play here also. He seems generally excited to be coming to a contender, and will probably be giving his all every night from here on out.

Really dude? You like your team? Maybe that’s because it’s 90% the same team that has won two cups, a couple presidents trophies, and countless division titles in the last 10 years.

HUGE game tonight IMO.
Losing will bring the guys down a bit from the high emotions I’m sure they’re feeling after finding out they’re ‘getting help’ on LW…
But win this game, and moving forward I’ve got to believe it will be a ginormous boost of confidence going into the last 19 games.
Keep the ball rolling!!!
