Trade-deadline day kicks off with…a signing? [update]
Justin Williams has agreed to a four-year contract extension with the Kings, worth $14.6 million. That’s a salary-cap hit of $3.65 million. Williams is currently tied for the team lead with 20 goals and will turn 30 in October.
Nice work DL!

@DaveinSD,
I second that…
..he’s been the comeback player of the year for me. Hands down. He has played with so much energy and skill and poise. I really like him a lot…even the way he tried to recover after a broken leg last year in only 5 months says a lot (even though he was a step slower, but still). Plus he’s generally one of my favorite Kings to hear interviewed, he’s pretty thoughtful and articultate and doesn’t really resort to many cliches.
On a non fun note a contract of that length gives him certainty about his place on the franchise and from a GM’s perspective it allows flexibility in say year 3 or 4 to trade him to another team (if the need ever arises) because it should be a relatively easy contract for other teams to absorb

@Shakes, I totally agree. Justin has been playing outstanding hockey this year and when he scored the GWG and my highlight goal of the year against the Lightning way back in Nov I snatched him up on my fantasy hockey team. Great year for JW and a fantastic sign by DL!

@DaveinSD, My only concern is that so many players have a breakout during their contract year only to go back to same routine once they are signed. They tend to lose that motivation. I hope this is not the case with Willy.
Shakes Reply:

@DaveinSD,
Well played! One of the reasons the Kings have been a joy to love (well, when they score on offense that is) is that (1) they’re winning, (2) they seem to have upside organically (3) it’s just nice to know who is going to be on our team for the next few years to help create a fan bond
As far as I see it we can now safely add JW to the “Main Core Group” list, which I think breaks down as follows:
Main Core
- Kopi
- Brownie
- JW
- JMFJ
- Drew
- Quick
Pretty Much Core
- Mitchell (this guy has really flown under the radar this year…but man he’s so good)
- Greene
- Simmer (although it’s usually just unfounded rumors, his name does get thrown around a lot b/c it would have give market value, but i would wanna see him stay for a long time)
Future Core
- Clifford the Big Red Dog
- Schenn
- Martinez

@Shakes, I’ll 3rd that. YOu’re right on. I hope Simmer is within the core–and agree with the future core. Like what we’ve seen of CLiff, Martinez…and will soon see with Schenn. JW has been incredible–and I hope his signing is for the KIngs….and not in anticipation of then trading him elsewhere where the acquiring team didn’t want a rental potential. I think he has proven his grit and poise…and totally agree that he is intelligent and without cliches. SOme of the interviews with the guys really don’t tell us anything. He is unique in that way. He’s nice looking too! The mix of vets and young guys on this team, IMO are perfect. Just need one more reliable scorer who can boost the PP and I think we have the makings of a Stanley Cup challenger.

pucktime Reply:

@kris, a lot has to do with DL’s stand on developing young players without putting too much pressure on them too early. I expect we will see him in preseason again next year, possibly will make the big squad but withouth the pressure to be a top-6 right out of the gate. Schenn is young enough that he couldn’t go to the AHL this year, had to go back to his Junior team, so we can’t bring him up until his Junior season is over. But next year he is eligible for Manchester, so he would get some more development time and also be more accessible to the big squad in the event of injury/performance.
Blake D Reply:
February 28th, 2011 at 10:44 am
@kris, He has the potential to be a superstar. It’s like a top prospect in baseball to make a comparison. Potential in hockey goes along way. When he can catch up to the speed of NHL hockey he will be a great player. As long as he can avoid injury and what not. Give him a year or maybe two you will see him up with the Kings putting the puck in the net. You need the young guys to come up through your system to make your team good. Trying to patch and piece it together every year does nothing towards winning the cup.

@mrbrett7, @EllieMurray…I didn’t write that right…I didn’t mean Williams himself. I just meant a veteren looking for a new deal. At his age, they normally like to hit free agency because this is the age where they really cash in and make some serious money.
For instance…most people were scratching their heads at Craig Andersen here in Colorado (I live here in Denver). Why was he traded? He turned down two extensions…he wanted to test the market. So, the Av’s were smart, and got something for him while they could.
Awesome, great to know that he wants to be a King for years to come!

What a great start to the day. Losing JW would have opened another hole up front next year and he’s been terrific this season. Thank you, JW and Lombardi!
[Reply]
Couple things:
I’m stoked to have JW signed. I am a big fan of his style of play. I’m not sure 4 years is the right length (seems a little long) but I’m happy he’s locked up.
How does McKenzie scoop Hammond here? I mean it’s one of the busiest days of the year with info flying all over the place and a general-NHL guy gets info before the team reporter? McKenzie should just be the “insider” for the league…well I guess he is. That sound like a little story by itself.
Why is Dean Lombardi negotiating contracts at the trade deadline? I know there are multiple people involved, and maybe Solomon is doing most of the work, but still, DL has to spend SOME time on this, right? Wouldn’t his time be best used to focus on getting a player for the playoff push? Seems strange to me.
Could Williams be locked up in anticipation of a move? Kind of like a sign-ish and trade deal? Hope not, but the timing gives me pause.

@Player-X, Yes, given DL’s history a sign-then-trade is definitely a possibility (see Lubo). Will feel much better if he’s still around at the end of the day. Great price, though. Just imagine if Frolov had played the way JW did in his contract year!

Crash Davis Reply:

@wavesinair, JW’s new contract would be given to Kings Jeff Solomon, who would negotiate the deal. DL would know how negotiations were going + price + years+ cap hit etc. But that negotiation never would get in the way of DL’s attention on a trade or trades. Solomon does the shovel work.
We all agree JW is having a great comeback year, has returned to be a 20 goal scorer and deserves an extension.
Why would you trade him from a team that needs scoring?

The good thing is JW wants to be part of the core that will hopefully bring the Stanley Cup here sooner rather than later.

We just need to bite down, and improve our team with this depth in the system. Hopefully we can nab someone like Booth or Penner.

@wavesinair, Since when were the Kings not expected to make the playoffs this year? They made it last year and should have beaten Vancouver. Expectations were higher this year. @wavesinair, Yeah, but that’s typical of almost any GM. Unless you’re Detroit or Pittsburgh you probably want to keep your public expectations low because you never know what happens. I’m 100% positive that if you could get an honest private answer from Dean Lombardi he’d say he expected this team to make the playoffs and probably advance at least one round. He just can’t say that publicly as his job and reputation then rests on that statement.
wavesinair Reply:
February 28th, 2011 at 8:54 am
@PaulHB, I wonder how true that is. I think the other way. Most GM’s say they expect to make the playoffs. That’s their goal and they say it publicly. To not put your rep on the line because you want to keep your job is very shady to me. If your the GM, you should be the first and loudest person saying it. But I wonder what each of the other 29 GM’s say. I’d have to do some research.

@vplaza, The price isn’t too high provided it’s the right player coming back. I know everyone loves Simmonds but if you look at his skills he’s really hot and cold. He can light it up and put 5 goals in over 6 games then not score for 20 games. Sure the game is plays is gritty and everyone loves him but if a team asks for Simmonds, Teubert, and a pick (the rumored price for someone like Hemsky) I’d make that deal in a minute. Would I trade Brayden Schenn? Not unless we’re getting a Stamkos type player back. Would I trade a player (or players/prospects) from that next level of talent down? Absolutely.
Also I agree that if DL makes a move it’ll probably be from completely out of left field. That’s his MO.

@PaulHB,
i think yr dead-on with simmer…
i love the guy…and ideally…you want him on yr team…
but if you can make a significant upgrade to get you to the serious contender-level, you have to consider it…
schenn, on the other hand, i wouldn’t touch…
but all these possibilities have to be based upon what is coming back…i’m not so sure the proposed hemsky deal is one that we would want to do…i think that’s a tough one…but simmer is not as untouchable as he appeared to be…
vplaza Reply:

@PaulHB,
Interesting point, but I haven’t heard Simmonds mentioned in a deal for Hemsky or anyone else. What you’ll get in return for Simmonds is not someone who will be that big impact player that many want to see come to the Kings, IMHO.
Put it this way, if you see that he’s solid, but is also hot and cold, then why wouldn’t the other team see it that way and still be inclined to give us a player above Simmonds in skill and productivity?

With this market you have to do better, but kings fans like you it is enough, the same time DL is nowhere to be found when a trade should be done. But don’t worry, he loves building, just never finish the job, same time you just pay and pay. He should take some lesson how the job should be done from steve Y. at lightings, he has done more for that team 6 months than DL did here at the kings. I could see Bernier in a package for a #1 LW/C in the summer (Please Rick Nash!), but no way do I think they should mess with their goaltending situation this year. Me personally I don’t think the Kings will include him in any deal. So if the Kings do make a deal its going to be small one. Which really I won’t even do that.

Forget the trade mania. If DL is going to do a deal, it is one that none of us have contemplated. He works quietly and behind the scenes, so I am not even going to worry about it. I am worried about TONIGHT’S GAME AGAINST THE RED WINGS. they are a terrific team (even though we hate them). This is huge game for us and we really need the two points. It is a great opportuntiy to test ourselves against one of the best teams in the league. Personally, I think that making no deal will be a tremendous boost to the players and they will be even more inclined to play harder and better. GKG!!

Since there isn’t really anything out there, save the money to sign DD and then a top free agent like Parise this summer. With the standings being so tight and everyone so even, I don’t really think that there is anything out there to push us over anyone else. We just need to get into the playoffs where good defense and goaltending (whihc we have) wins games. Get the PP working and we have an excellent shot at winning it all this year, or at least just as much of a shot as anyone else.

You think Doughty wants to be a King? Well that’s how much if not more Parise wants to be a Devil. Plus his GM is a genius. So you figure it out.

I always wished that DT would have traded the 2nd and 3rd first rounders he had that year to move up and get One really great player (Mike Richards, Corey Perry, Zach Parise, Ryan Getzlaf) instead of dithering around with a project (Brian Boyle) and Jeff Tambellini. So, I shouldn’t get myself started on that one.

[Reply]
DesertKing Reply:
February 28th, 2011 at 10:50 am
@number 6,
He may want to be a Devil, but when you are only dressing 15-19 players for some games due to money and salary cap issues, “want” may not be good enough. The question actually becomes “do the Devils want him to be a Devil, and if they do, can they afford for him to be a Devil?” Once he becomes a UFA and realizes how much money he can make, what he may “want” has a tendency to change. Ref his GM being a genius, uh, no. He signed Kovalspank, leveraged his team for one guy who has 22 goals so far this season and created a salary cap problem that they have to live with for 15 years. The desire to win and be on a winning team may also play a part. NJ isn’t going anywhere for a long time while the Kings are coming up and if Parise wants to see his persoal stats soar, he needs only to look to his right and see all of those sweet passes from an unselfish Kopi leading to him lighting that “goal” lamp up. Never say never and as a Kings fan, hope for the best. GKG

@number 6,
Lou is far from a genius at this point. He’s fortunate to have a job at this point. Lou essentially debilitated the franchise with the ridiculous Kovalchuk deals (the trade and the signing), essentially turning the Devils into the Thrashers. Lucky for him Lemaire came back in to crack the whip, but Jacques is not a long term solution. Brodeur’s career has entered the twilight and since they have to hang on to him, the Devils will continue to be their own worst enemy and slide into Senators mode.

there seems to be not many JW detractors that were on this blog his first season. yes, he has with healing of injuries shown more, but he was a good player from the get go, you could see how he did little things that keep the puck moving into dangerous positions. i’m glad he’s here to help as one of the core players.
there won’t be any outstanding left wings available, so my thought is, get a person, like Lyles of the Av who can play d, i know we are fine with our d-men, but he is a Power Play quaterback, and we don’t have 1 like him in our mix. if that would mean that martinez or DD2 sat out and it made an improvement on our PP, i would add him for a pick or prospect. when you think about it, if we had a decent PP, it would be a Big improvement in our game, and a incredibly important aspect in the Play-offs, where more times than not, 5 on 5 is equal, and it is the special teams and goaltending that is a consistant play-off formula.
my point, if we can’t find and spend for a Left wing, let’s improve the Power Play with a pick-up, for a cost we could afford.

@D B COOPER, I have to agree with you there. I’m glad we resigned JW, he’s a quality player and really puts his heart out there. I wouldn’t mind a good LW in a deal, but depending on the price maybe we should stick to what we have or go for a solid low-profile guy. I know Halpern was a bust, but look at how much Modin helped out when he got here, he jumped in and kickstarted a dead PP last year.

however, it would be a disappointment if something can’t get done to help this team go further in the playoffs…
i have never been an advocate for making a trade just to appease fans, etc…
but i did think today was a big day for dl and his staff…and even though many of the options are perhaps lower-tiered from the a-list, my thoughts would be more inclined to believe that there is a viable option out there that we are not discussing nor realizing…
and that’s why i believe that dl is as active as anyone in trying to make that come to fruition…if he didn’t, he wouldn’t be doing his job very well…

I’d rather send the message to the guys we have that they have to dig down and get it done instead of counting on a new player to elevate them. There is a good mix of talent, age, and experience on our team, they just need to get hard and get back the game they played against Tampa Bay at the beginning of the season; fast, physical, and disciplined.

HUGE rumor coming from Caps fans….
Stastny going to the Caps for Semin and a prospect. He apparently wants OUT of Colorado.
If this is the case, DEANO…JUST ABOUT ANYONE (but a handfull). Got it? Good.
Oh, and Pierre McGuire is reporting the Kings and Edmonton are close on something, and rumor is it’s Hemsky (which makes NO sense to me).

You mean deals after the deadline? Don’t see how that would be possible.

@AZ King, I think the lag time comes from the head office having to review and approve the deal. So even if it’s done at 11:30, there can be a little time before it can be announced. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

@AZ King, this is actually more common than you think. They just need to file it with stipulations. You’ll see some trades trickle in after the deadline today.
VanKingsFan Reply:

@AZ King, Sometimes deals are agreed to before the deadline but the paper work etc. has to go through the league or something and you will often see a bunch of deals announced in the hour after the deadline.

@mrbrett7, Hemsky and Smyth had very good chemistry in the playoffs in EDM. If the deal goes throught, hopefully they can leave off where they started.

@Ersberg, My only issue with Hemsky (two), are his position (RW) and his durability. But you can’t deny the talent.

Probably, but how many of them are top 6 LWs for a decent price?
You know what I haven’t seen yet, a 3 way deal. Usually there’s a couple of those around the deadline. Something to keep an eye on, since nothing else is happening at the moment.

@Katy Perry,
I know you don’t like the Fro, but the guy scored 51 points from the 3rd line. Poni in the same position has how many? I like Poni, but at some point he needs to produce, or the switch for the Fro was a down grade.

@Dominick,
the bigger question for fro now is when…and where…will he come back…?
not exactly according to plan – anyone’s…
i wish him all the best and hope he’s able to do something positive for someone in the future…but…this might be the turning point in alex’s (it’s alex now, not fro or alexander) career…and it doesn’t look like optimism is burning right now…

Dominick Reply:

@variable,
If he gets healthy and works hard on comming back, the Kings might even be able to let Poni walk next season and offer Fro a 1.5 to 2 mill contract. Filling that 3rd line left wing at a discount.
Stranger things have happened. Definately stir up contraversey.
Thank you Dean Lombardi.
I’m impressed that you not only got Willy signed for 4 years (I predicted 3), but you did it under 4 million a year which is what I thought it would take.
Thank you Justin Williams.
Committing to The Kings for long term is going to pay off for everyboedy.
Nicely done.

@Harry, Wayne Gretzky..As a coach…big bust. This is also a guy that you dont want as your GM either. When he was playing in L.A, he always had Mcnall’s ear and usually they pissed away players and draft picks like they were water.

Nah, they already spend too much time playing behind the net. They would have to face the goal toward the goal lamp for the Kings to score on the PP. LOL.

@Capt Jam, Maybe Gretz could teach them how to find the open man in the slot when their back there, or how to walk out and feed it cross crease to a streaking forward who’s crashing the net.

tsn didn’t exactly have reporters and cameras hanging out at chris campoli’s pad today…
geeeez…
really slow going…
not only for us, but around the league…
the last couple of weeks of action was not a prelude at all as many had thought…
brian burke has all but conceded his leafs efforts already by resigning that all is probably done for them…
other gm’s are speaking about not partaking in any last grabs or desperate acts that could jeopardize any future plans that they might have…
so, in many ways, you can look to the overwhelming competitive nature of the western conference as a good reason as to why teams are not willing to part with what they have…
everyone knows who everyone has – there are no surprises…
that’s why the art of the deal is as important as assessing and gauging talent as anything else…you can plan and box things all you want, but without implementation of said plans, all yr left with are theories and an expensive office supply bill…
and i think that’s the subject – the art of making a deal – that can be examined in relation to how dl is measeured versus his peers…
that is a good debate open to discussion, regardless of what happens today….

@variable,
Helene had an article calling out Dean for lacking those exact skills. To some degree I wonder wether DL can make something out of nothing considering all the assests at his disposal. Judging from all the comments stating that DL won’t do squat means that, people feel the need, and lack the faith that DL will get it done. I for one believe he’s a brilliant GM, but at the same time wonder about his skills in facilitating any deal of significance when trying to find a trade to fill a certain hole in the line up.
