As noted in the previous post, the Kings hope to have Dustin Penner in Los Angeles at some point today, but there are always travel/immigration hurdles. I’ll look at catch up with him as soon as possible, but for now, here’s the video of the news conference he did with Edmonton media immediately after the trade, followed by an interview Terry Murray conducted on the “NHL Live” program today…

@BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy,
The Kings have actually beaten DET the last 4 games in a row (but who’s counting?). DET has been up and down all season, never really being able to maintain consistency. Some of that is due to injuries, I’m sure, but I think some of it is due to it’s just kinda over for the Wings. They’re still one of the better regular season teams, but they just don’t have the same Zazz anymore to get it done in the playoffs (I think). We’ll see.
Taking the Kings in another low-scoring game with little to no puck handling by Quick.

@CB14, Those were not rumors, they were publicly stated mind games by MacTavish when he coached the Oil. That Bozo was trying to channel Mike Keenan (and Bozo isn’t only a reference to MacTavish’s clownish ‘do). Penner is a pretty graceful skater for such a big fella. So maybe he didn’t squirrel around the rink with elbows flying everywhere and tongue flapping in the wind like MacTavish used to, but Penner didn’t have to play that way to be effective. He’s very hard to handle and it’s alot of fun to watch guys just bounce right off of him. Maybe MacTavish expected Penner to be Rick Nash, but he’s just not (and nobody else is, either).

this is a great deal. we filled a hole without having to create a new hole. not only will penner’s 20-30 goals a year help, but hopefully this will also push kopitar to become a 40 goal scorer. penner also brings something that kopitar lacks i.e. driving to the net. when he goes hard to the net, it will create more open space for kopi to use his skill (and might even rub off on him a little bit too). alll around, totally pleased. good job dean.

Here’s some NHL Numbers thanks to http://www.nhlnumbers.com
LA now has $3.78 mil of cap space. However for next year LA will have a lot of decisions to make.
Before signing or resigning anyone LA is just under $48 million on the cap. They will have about $11.5 million of cap space to work with.
RFA are: Doughty, Lewis, Martinez, Richardson & Simmonds
UFA are: Harrold, Ponikarovsky & Zues
It seems like Zues and Ponikarovsky might not be coming back. I hope LA finds a way to keep Zues, but LA will have to figure out what they plan on doing with Doughty.
Next year might be the Kings big year for a real Stanley Cup push with Penner, Smyth and Stoll being FAs after next year.
I don’t want to get to ahead of ourselves. These are just food for thought between periods tonight.
[Reply]
VanKingsFan Reply:
February 28th, 2011 at 2:47 pm
@Scott, Lets try and work with that 11.5.
Doughty – 6 cap hit
Lewis – 900,000
Martinez – 1.2
Richardson – 1.5 (IF we keep him; I think we will let him walk)
Simmonds – 2 (If the Canucks can convince Alex Burrows to take this kind of money than so can Simmonds)
Harrold – GONE
Ponikerovsky – GONE
Handzus – GONE (unless he takes 1 Million or less)
6
.9
1.2
1.5
2.0
= 11.6
So I was close…. a lot more things will happen to change these numbers obviously. Bonuses, rookies, FA’s, trades, slick accounting moves, etc.

Shotongoal Reply:
February 28th, 2011 at 3:11 pm
@friarking, not to sound coldhearted, I appreciate what both of these players have brought to the table this year, but I wouldn’t resign either one of them, unless they took huge cuts. There will be more action with this team in the offseason I think. The commitment is there, this trade proves it, and whatever any of us think, the pursuit of the knucklehead in NJ this past summer also proves that this team is finally committed to their youth, and improving the roster even if it means spending a little money to do so. And, that’s a big thing, because those of us who listened to LIEwicke over the years know that it was not always the case! So I believe that the focus will be on the younger, core players, getting them signed, DD WS AM and maybe to a far lesser extent Lewis. So therefore I don’t think Handzus, Poni, or Richardson are much of an issue for this team next year.
Scott Reply:
February 28th, 2011 at 3:02 pm
@VanKingsFan, the downside to your list is LA doesn’t have any room to pick up a FA unless they trade someone. The positive side is there aren’t too many top quality FAs this year. Here’s a quick list:
Player/age/current contract
Brad Richards 30 – $7.8m
Andrei Markov 31 – $5.7m
Simon Gagne 30 – $5.2m
Alexei Kovalev 37 – $5
Tim Connolly 29 – $4.9m
Teemu Selanne 40 – $4.5m
Scott Hannan 31 – $4.5m
Ilya Bryzgalov 30 – $4.25 **
Michael Ryder 30 – $4m
Joni Pitkanen 26 – $4m
Milan Hejduk 34 – $3m
Erik Cole 31 – $2.9m
Tomas Fleischmann 26 – $2.6m
Brooks Laich 27 – $2.1m
Nikolai Zherdev 25 – $2m
** = If he leave PHX it will greatly help LA.
There are only a few guys on the above list I would like LA to go after:
Cole, Fleischmann, Laich & Zherdev seem to be the only realistic guys LA could get. I don’t see them paying big money for a high priced FA. And by trading a D prospect it doesn’t look like LA needs any D nor G this off season.

Matthew Reply:
February 28th, 2011 at 4:08 pm
@VanKingsFan, I believe your 11.5 number is quite a bit off and we have much more money than that to work with. For example, although DD makes .875 million his CAP hit is 3.475. I’m not sure why this is, but I assume it has something to do with the introductory contract rules in hockey… Simmonds CAP hit is also higher than what he’s paid, though not as significant. In essence, DD making 6 mil next year (arguably high after this year’s production) is a 2.5 mil increase… not a 5 mil increase as far as CAP space goes. Also, Ryan Smyth’s contract pays him less year by year so I’m wondering if this drops the CAP hit? Anyway, DL made it sound like there will be money available to chase a few guys in the off season and obviously having Parse back (hopefully) will add another layer of depth too. Look forward to seeing Schenn next year as well!
[Reply]
Scot Reply:
February 28th, 2011 at 6:45 pm
@Matthew,
The CAP hit is the same for each player every year of his contract. And it represents the AAV (Average Annual Value) of the contract. For example, if Ryan Smyth had a three-year contract for 15 million dollars, and was paid 6 million the first year, 5 million the second year, and 4 million the third year, his CAP hit would still be 5 million all three years.
Marian Hossa is making, what 7.9 million the next 20 years? His cap hit though is only 5 million or so (not sure exactly), which is nice FOR NOW, but when he gets to the years where he is only making 1 million each year at the end of the deal, his cap hit will still be 5 million.. ouch. The Kings “missing out” on him 2 summers ago was, to say the least, serendipitous!
Matthew Reply:
February 28th, 2011 at 4:08 pm
@VanKingsFan, Oh and take $1.5 million hit away from this year for Sturm… money money money!

Let’s put a little perspective on this.
Someone who has 21 goals at this point in the season probably will NOT be the second coming of Robitaille and definitely not a savior.
Which is OK, because a team that has only lost once in regulation in 15 games didn’t need one. And still doesn’t.
What I believe will be far more valuable then the 20 or 15 or even 2 goals he scores will be the END of the “let’s see Kopitar, Simmonds and whose turn is it now?” discussions.
The cynics will now have to find some OTHER hole we “so desperately” need to fill.
And maybe, just maybe, there isn’t one……

@HockeyNerd, Penner has 21 goals, playing with essentially no-on. Sure he plays with Hemsky for the most part I guess, but Hemsky is no Kopitar. Players who can manage 20+ goals playing with no one can easily top 30+ playing with someone as talented as Kopitar. Next season, a line of Penner/Kopi/Brown easily has the potential for 80 goals total i think

@Newf, Yup, over a full season you can definitely pencil him in for at least 30. What I am saying is we don’t need to (and shouldn’t) throw unrealistic expectations on this guy. Too few people keep mentioning how well we have been doing WITH this supposed huge hole…..

Shotongoal Reply:

@HockeyNerd, I don’t think anyone thinks he is Robitaille, not too many of those type players in todays NHL anyway. I think I get what you mean though. I think he is a really good fit for this team, I wanted Hemsky more before the deadline because I believed he brought a different type presence and game to the team. But, for what the Kings gave up in this trade, I cannot and don’t want to complain! This is a very solid team and if Penner is committed and focused, I think he will be a big asset. Who knows, he could be the piece that gets them to the finals. I don’t see any other dominant team(s) in the league this year.
[Reply]
Okay Penner will help without a doubt, likely support line 1 or 2 for sure. However we over payed, 1st round draft picks are expensive to spend when your not getting someone that can lock up a win of a cup.
I like Penner and I said yes to him many months ago, however the price is too steep…..most will see a different Penner in game 1 and 2 with the Kings vs. game 30 or 40 whenever that comes.
Fans that go to the Staples Centre don’t put all the pressure on Penner to preform, he’s not that type of player. Yes he will get 20 goals a season, even this year that doesn’t win cups perhaps supports in playoff picture but not the cup.
We need one or two more pieces to the puzzle, Schenn is one piece coming next season and finding him line mates will be tricky too however less now with Penner.
Red Wings will be tough, look out tonight…….

@Harty, I disagree. The Kings have more assets than they know what to do with. The reason they chose Forbort last year was because they knew he would be in college, and could take their time with him. It wouldn’t be any different with the next draft. If anything, Dean is not doing a good enough job in moving these draft picks and other assets fast enough before we lose them. We’ve lost Moulson, Boyle, and Purcell for almost nothing because we had nowhere to put them. We may even lose Voynov next year for the same reason.
The Kings are in a good position to overpay with draft picks and AHL players without compromising the future.

@Harty, I totally disagree, as it appears most everyone else has on this comment. This trade was all about NOW. And that’s exactly what they needed to address. There are a plethora of prospects in the organIzation, and this next draft isn’t very deep. Teams who do have prospects in abundance get better by using those pieces to make their current rosters stronger, that’s what the Kings did here, and may I add have never really had the ability to do so till now! If I may ask, what would you rather the Kings have given up to get Penner, or are you just not sold on him helping the team this year and next? You can have all the prospects in the league, but if you can’t mix in some experience and talent then you’re not going to win in this league.

I doubt hes sad… He’s pumped! Coming back to SoCal getting out of sub-zero temps! Plus he gets off a team that is no where in site for being in the playoff race. Hopefully Penner can give us that extra boost. And at long last, I don’t have to keep hitting that refresh button! Now on to tonights game!

@neil, I say if he arrives in good time, he’s in otherwise he will arrive at practice center tomorrow to skate for two days prior to next game.

@Harty, He has to pass a medical before he is allowed to play, or even practice with the team. NHL Network showed a clip of the deal actually going down and that is what was stipulated. So Thursday looks like the soonest he will play.

@neil, overall on his play, NEVER will he be scratched

I’m surprised at how far Teubert has fallen off the depth chart. When the Kings draftet Forbort, it made me somewhat skeptical of what DL thought of Teubert since we have plenty of defensemen in the system already. The first round pick is tough to give up but you have to give something. Penner will help and should be motivated to go to a playoff team. We probably lack team speed but are a much better team today than yesterday. Good deadline day to be a Kings fan!

@Hockeysureshot, It’s not so much that Teubert has fallen, he has sufficient value to get a top notch player for him. The Kings had an abundance of young defensemen who would be languishing in Manchester waiting to crack one of the better defense corps in the NHL/

YAY…. We Got THREE Milbury’s!!! – on the Puckdaddy Site. They look so sweet the little Milbury’s. I’m so happy.

Rich, will you have an interview Justin Williams now that his extension is finalized?

Any word if he’ll be playing tonight? I assumed we wouldn’t see him until Thursday, but DL mentioned they’re going to try and get him down here. Logistally it doesn’t sound likely, but it would be great to have him in the lineup tonight.

@Cup B4 I Die, NHL Network just said Penner isn’t in action tonight due to the immigration issues.

@Cup B4 I Die, I disagree… it takes a toll on your body when you fly in a plane.
A few hours on an airplane followed by a rish to the rink to play with brand new team mates in a brand new system. It is a recipe for failure if you ask me.
Give him a day to sort out his affairs and have him join the team Wednesday morning for practice.

@Puck2DaHead,
Maybe so, but Lecavalier can be very dangerous for TB, Hossa I think has been hurt for Chicago and he’s a legit 30 goal scorer and in fact you left out Philly (Giroux 21 – Carter 28 – Mike Richards 19, so essentially 20 – Briere 28 – Hartnell 19, so essentially 20). So basically five Plus two guys who have 15 at the moment Versteeg and James Van Riemsdyk and one with 14, Ville Leino. Now that is depth!!
Also there are still teams out there that have a stronger skill set than the Kings, but we’re going in a good direction.

@number 6, There’s no doubt Philly has an amazingly deep team. When I ran all the numbers, Philly was the only other team that almost had 20-goal scorers, but didn’t quite make the cut; however, the Flyers are definitely a force out there.

@Puck2DaHead, kudos on the work on this but I have to say that I would trade 4 of the Kings 20 goalers even up for Stamkos, Ovechkin, Ryan, Sedin, Toews, Sharp, Kane, Staal, Crosby, or Nash!! I mean its great to have that balanced scoring but Kopitar is the only potential superstar in that Kings group. Don’t get me wrong though!!

Was there no media coverage in the US? (That was a Canadian station)
Don’t mind the trade. Don’t like seeing them lose their #1 pick though. Now they’ve gotta go deep in the playoffs.
Penner fits the team well though.
I wonder who he’ll play with and if he’ll be in the lineup tonight.
Let’s go boys!

@steve, also i wish to point out that we got a steal with sturm earlier this season and even though we lost him, if we overpaid here, then it balances – if that makes sense.

In addition to helping Kopi and the PP, I think Penner’s presence will help Simmonds and Clifford grow into better players. Clifford may not have the same kind of hands and vision (yet), but he’ll now get to work with a guy who knows how to make the most of his size and strength to score.
